1 A uzind despre aceste evenimente, toţi regii din regiunea de apus a Iordanului, atât cei din regiunea muntoasă şi din zona deluroasă, cât şi cei situaţi pe întreaga coastă a Mării celei Mari până în dreptul Libanului, şi anume regii hitiţi, amoriţi, canaaniţi, pereziţi, hiviţi şi iebusiţi,

And it cometh to pass, when all the kings who beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the low-country, and in every haven of the great sea, over-against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, hear --

2 s -au aliat ca să lupte împotriva lui Iosua şi a lui Israel.

that they gather themselves together to fight with Joshua, and with Israel -- one mouth.

3 L ocuitorii din Ghivon însă, când au auzit ce făcuse Iosua cetăţilor Ierihon şi Ai,

And the inhabitants of Gibeon have heard that which Joshua hath done to Jericho and to Ai,

4 s -au folosit de vicleşug şi au plecat spre israeliţi, dându-se drept mesageri. Ei purtau pe măgarii lor saci învechiţi şi burdufuri vechi de vin, crăpate şi peticite.

and they work, even they, with subtilty, and go, and feign to be ambassadors, and take old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up,

5 E rau încălţaţi cu sandale vechi şi peticite şi purtau pe ei haine învechite, iar toată pâinea pe care o aveau ca provizie era uscată şi fărâmiţată.

and sandals, old and patched, on their feet, and old garments upon them, and all the bread of their provision is dry -- it was crumbs.

6 A u venit la Iosua în tabăra de la Ghilgal şi i-au vorbit astfel lui şi bărbaţilor lui Israel: – Noi am venit dintr-o ţară îndepărtată. Încheiaţi acum un legământ cu noi!

And they go unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, and say unto him, and unto the men of Israel, `From a land far off we have come, and now, make with us a covenant;'

7 B ărbaţii lui Israel le-au răspuns însă hiviţilor: – Poate că voi locuiţi în mijlocul nostru. Cum să încheiem un legământ cu voi?

and the men of Israel say unto the Hivite, `It may be in our midst ye are dwelling, and how do we make with thee a covenant?'

8 – Noi suntem slujitorii tăi! i-au zis ei lui Iosua. – Cine sunteţi şi de unde veniţi? i-a întrebat Iosua.

and they say unto Joshua, `Thy servants we.' And Joshua saith unto them, `Who ye? and whence come ye?'

9 – Slujitorii tăi au venit dintr-o ţară foarte îndepărtată, i-au răspuns ei, din cauza Numelui Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, fiindcă am auzit de faima Lui: tot ceea ce a făcut în Egipt,

And they say unto him, `From a land very far off have thy servants come, for the name of Jehovah thy God, for we have heard His fame, and all that He hath done in Egypt,

10 p recum şi ce a făcut celor doi regi amoriţi de la răsărit de Iordan, lui Sihon, regele Heşbonului şi lui Og, regele Başanului, care domnea la Aştarot.

and all that He hath done to the two kings of the Amorite who beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who in Ashtaroth.

11 B ătrânii noştri împreună cu toţi locuitorii ţării noastre ne-au zis să ne luăm provizii pentru călătorie, să plecăm, iar când vă vom întâlni, să vă spunem: „Noi suntem slujitorii voştri. Prin urmare, încheiaţi legământ cu noi!“.

`And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land speak unto us, saying, Take in your hand provision for the way, and go to meet them, and ye have said unto them, Your servants we, and now, make with us a covenant;

12 P âinea aceasta era caldă când am luat-o de acasă, în ziua în care am pornit în călătorie către voi, dar acum iată că este uscată şi fărâmiţată.

this our bread -- hot we provided ourselves with it out of our houses, on the day of our coming out to go unto you, and now, lo, it is dry, and hath been crumbs;

13 A ceste burdufuri de vin au fost odată pline şi noi, dar acum iată că sunt crăpate, iar îmbrăcămintea şi sandalele ni s-au învechit mult din cauza călătoriei lungi.

and these the wine-bottles which we filled, new, and lo, they have rent; and these, our garments and our sandals, have become old, from the exceeding greatness of the way.'

14 I sraeliţii le-au verificat proviziile şi nu L-au mai întrebat pe Domnul.

And the men take of their provision, and the mouth of Jehovah have not asked;

15 I osua a făcut pace cu ei, încheind un legământ că le va cruţa vieţile, iar conducătorii adunării i-au asigurat de aceasta printr-un jurământ.

and Joshua maketh with them peace, and maketh with them a covenant, to keep them alive; and swear to them do the princes of the company.

16 L a trei zile după încheierea legământului, israeliţii au aflat că ghivoniţii sunt vecini cu ei şi că locuiesc în mijlocul lor.

And it cometh to pass, at the end of three days after that they have made with them a covenant, that they hear that they their neighbours -- that in their midst they are dwelling.

17 D upă trei zile de călătorie israeliţii au ajuns la cetăţile acestora: Ghivon, Chefira, Beerot şi Chiriat-Iearim.

And the sons of Israel journey and come in unto their cities on the third day -- and their cities Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-Jearim --

18 I sraeliţii nu i-au putut ataca deoarece conducătorii adunării le juraseră pe Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel. Întreaga adunare a cârtit împotriva conducătorilor.

and the sons of Israel have not smitten them, for sworn to them have the princes of the company by Jehovah God of Israel, and all the company murmur against the princes.

19 T oţi conducătorii au zis înaintea întregii adunări: „Pentru că le-am jurat pe Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, nu ne mai putem atinge de ei!

And all the princes say unto all the company, `We -- we have sworn to them by Jehovah, God of Israel; and now, we are not able to come against them;

20 T otuşi iată ce le putem face: le vom cruţa vieţile ca să nu se reverse mânia asupra noastră, din cauza a ceea ce le-am promis prin jurământ.“

this we do to them, and have kept them alive, and wrath is not upon us, because of the oath which we have sworn to them.'

21 C onducătorii au mai zis: „Să trăiască!“ Au fost însă întrebuinţaţi la tăiat lemne şi la scos apă pentru întreaga adunare, cum le spuseseră conducătorii.

And the princes say unto them, `They live, and are hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the company, as the princes spake to them.'

22 I osua i-a chemat pe ghivoniţi şi le-a zis: – De ce ne-aţi înşelat spunându-ne că veniţi dintr-o ţară foarte îndepărtată, când de fapt voi locuiţi în mijlocul nostru?

And Joshua calleth for them, and speaketh unto them, saying, `Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you, and ye in our midst dwelling?

23 A cum sunteţi blestemaţi şi nici unul din voi nu va înceta să taie lemne şi să scoată apă pentru Casa Dumnezeului meu!

and now, cursed are ye, and none of you is cut off a servant, even hewers of wood and drawers of water, for the house of my God.'

24 E i i-au răspuns lui Iosua: – Slujitorilor tăi li s-a spus despre ceea ce Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, i-a poruncit robului Său Moise, şi anume să vă dea toată ţara şi să-i nimicească pe toţi locuitorii ţării dinaintea voastră. Atunci am fost cuprinşi de frică pentru vieţile noastre din cauza voastră şi de aceea am făcut lucrul acesta.

And they answer Joshua and say, `Because it was certainly declared to thy servants, that Jehovah thy God commanded Moses His servant to give to you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we fear greatly for ourselves because of you, and we do this thing;

25 A cum, noi suntem în mâinile tale. Prin urmare, fă-ne cum crezi că este bine şi drept!

and now, lo, we in thy hand, as good, and as right in thine eyes to do to us -- do.'

26 I osua le-a făcut aşa cum hotărâse; el i-a salvat din mâna israeliţilor şi astfel ei nu i-au ucis.

And he doth to them so, and delivereth them from the hand of the sons of Israel, and they have not slain them;

27 D ar începând cu acea zi, Iosua i-a pus să taie lemne şi să scoată apă pentru adunare şi pentru altarul Domnului, în locul pe care El îl va alege, ceea ce, de altfel, fac şi în ziua de azi.

and Joshua maketh them on that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the company, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, at the place which He doth choose.
