1 C hivotul Domnului s-a aflat în ţara filistenilor timp de şapte luni.

And the ark of Jehovah is in the field of the Philistines seven months,

2 F ilistenii i-au chemat pe preoţi şi pe ghicitori şi i-au întrebat: – Ce trebuie să facem cu Chivotul Domnului ? Spuneţi-ne cu ce să-l trimitem înapoi la locul lui?

and the Philistines call for priests and for diviners, saying, `What do we do to the ark of Jehovah? let us know wherewith we send it to its place?'

3 E i le-au răspuns: – Dacă veţi trimite înapoi Chivotul Dumnezeului lui Israel, să nu-l trimiteţi gol, ci, cu orice preţ, oferiţi-I un dar pentru vină. Atunci veţi fi vindecaţi şi veţi şti de ce nu s-a îndepărtat mâna Lui de peste voi.

And they say, `If ye are sending away the ark of the God of Israel, ye do not send it away empty; for ye do certainly send back to Him a guilt-offering; then ye are healed, and it hath been known to you why His hand doth not turn aside from you.'

4 – Ce dar pentru vină să-i oferim? au mai întrebat filistenii. Atunci ei le-au răspuns: – Cinci bube de aur şi cinci şoareci de aur după numărul domnitorilor filistenilor, pentru că aceeaşi plagă a fost atât peste voi toţi, cât şi peste domnitorii voştri.

And they say, `What the guilt-offering which we send back to Him?' and they say, `The number of the princes of the Philistines -- five golden emerods, and five golden mice -- for one plague to you all, and to your princes,

5 F aceţi, aşadar, nişte chipuri ale bubelor voastre şi ale şoarecilor care vă pustiesc ţara şi daţi slavă Dumnezeului lui Israel. În felul acesta poate El Îşi va ridica mâna de peste voi, de peste zeii voştri şi de peste ţara voastră.

and ye have made images of your emerods, and images of your mice that are corrupting the land, and have given honour to the God of Israel; it may be He doth lighten His hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land;

6 D e ce să vă împietriţi inimile aşa cum şi le-au împietrit egiptenii şi Faraon? Nu s-a purtat El aspru cu ei, aşa încât i-au lăsat pe evrei să plece, iar aceştia au plecat?

and why do ye harden your heart as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their heart? do they not -- when He hath rolled Himself upon them -- send them away, and they go?

7 A cum dar, pregătiţi un car nou şi două vaci care alăptează şi care n-au fost puse la jug niciodată. Înjugaţi vacile la car şi trimiteţi viţeii lor înapoi acasă.

`And now, take and make one new cart, and two suckling kine, on which a yoke hath not gone up, and ye have bound the kine in the cart, and caused their young ones to turn back from after them to the house,

8 L uaţi Chivotul Domnului şi puneţi-l în car. Alături de el, într-o ladă, puneţi obiectele din aur pe care I le trimiteţi ca dar pentru vină. Apoi trimiteţi-l şi el va merge.

and ye have taken the ark of Jehovah, and put it on the cart, and the vessels of gold which ye have returned to Him -- a guilt-offering -- ye put in a coffer on its side, and have sent it away, and it hath gone;

9 U itaţi-vă după el, iar dacă, pe drumul spre teritoriul său, o va lua spre Bet-Şemeş, atunci Domnul ne-a făcut acest mare rău; dacă nu, atunci vom şti că nu mâna Lui a fost cea care ne-a lovit, ci lucrul acesta a venit peste noi din întâmplare.

and ye have seen, if the way of its own border it goeth up to Beth-Shemesh -- He hath done to us this great evil; and if not, then we have known that His hand hath not come against us; an accident it hath been to us.'

10 O amenii au făcut aşa: au luat două vaci care alăptau, le-au înjugat la car, iar pe viţeii lor i-au închis în ţarc.

And the men do so, and take two suckling kine, and bind them in the cart, and their young ones they have shut up in the house;

11 A u pus Chivotul Domnului în car împreună cu lada în care erau şoarecii de aur şi chipurile bubelor lor.

and they place the ark of Jehovah upon the cart, and the coffer, and the golden mice, and the images of their emerods.

12 V acile au mers direct pe drumul care duce la Bet-Şemeş; ele au ţinut mereu acelaşi drum, mugind, şi nu s-au întors nici la dreapta, nici la stânga. Domnitorii filistenilor au mers după ele până la marginea cetăţii Bet-Şemeş.

And the kine go straight in the way, on the way to Beth-Shemesh, in one highway they have gone, going and lowing, and have not turned aside right or left; and the princes of the Philistines are going after them unto the border of Beth-Shemesh.

13 L ocuitorii din Bet-Şemeş tocmai secerau grâul în vale. Când şi-au ridicat privirile şi au zărit Chivotul s-au bucurat să-l vadă.

And the Beth-Shemeshites are reaping their wheat-harvest in the valley, and they lift up their eyes, and see the ark, and rejoice to see.

14 C arul a intrat în câmpul lui Iosua din Bet-Şemeş şi s-a oprit acolo. Acolo se afla o piatră mare. Ei au despicat lemnele carului şi au adus vacile ca ardere de tot Domnului.

And the cart hath come in unto the field of Joshua the Beth-Shemeshite, and standeth there, and there a great stone, and they cleave the wood of the cart, and the kine they have caused to ascend -- a burnt-offering to Jehovah.

15 L eviţii au dat jos Chivotul Domnului împreună cu lada care se afla lângă el şi în care se aflau obiectele din aur şi le-au aşezat pe piatra aceea mare. În ziua aceea, bărbaţii din Bet-Şemeş au adus o ardere de tot şi jertfe Domnului.

And the Levites have taken down the ark of Jehovah, and the coffer which with it, in which the vessels of gold, and place on the great stone; and the men of Beth-Shemesh have caused to ascend burnt-offerings and sacrifice sacrifices in that day to Jehovah;

16 C ei cinci domnitori ai filistenilor au văzut toate acestea şi s-au întors la Ekron în aceeaşi zi.

and the five princes of the Philistines have seen, and turn back Ekron, on that day.

17 I ată care sunt bubele din aur, pe care le-au trimis filistenii Domnului ca dar pentru vină: câte una pentru Aşdod, Gaza, Aşchelon, Gat şi Ekron.

And these the golden emerods which the Philistines have sent back -- a guilt-offering to Jehovah: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

18 I ar şoarecii din aur erau după numărul tuturor cetăţilor filistenilor, de la cetăţi fortificate până la sate. Piatra aceea mare, pe care au aşezat Chivotul Domnului, a rămas până în ziua de azi în câmpul lui Iosua, din Bet-Şemeş.

and the golden mice -- the number of all the cities of the Philistines -- for the five princes, from the fenced city even unto the hamlet of the villages, even unto the great meadow on which they placed the ark of Jehovah -- unto this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-Shemeshite.

19 D omnul i-a lovit de moarte pe oamenii din Bet-Şemeş pentru că s-au uitat în Chivotul Domnului; a lovit de moarte cincizeci de mii şaptezeci de bărbaţi dintre ei. Poporul a jelit din cauza acestei mari urgii cu care i-a lovit Domnul.

And He smiteth among the men of Beth-Shemesh, for they looked into the ark of Jehovah, yea, He smiteth among the people seventy men -- fifty chief men; and the people mourn, because Jehovah smote among the people -- a great smiting.

20 A tunci bărbaţii din Bet-Şemeş au zis: „Cine ar putea să stea înaintea Domnului, înaintea acestui Dumnezeu sfânt? Şi la cine trebuie să se ducă Chivotul de la noi?“

And the men of Beth-Shemesh say, `Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and unto whom doth He go up from us?'

21 A poi au trimis mesageri la locuitorii din Chiriat-Iearim ca să le spună: „Filistenii au adus înapoi Chivotul Domnului. Veniţi şi luaţi-l la voi!“

And they send messengers unto the inhabitants of Kirjath-Jearim, saying, `The Philistines have sent back the ark of Jehovah; come down, take it up unto you.'
