1 C ând Rahela a văzut că ea nu i-a născut nici un copil lui Iacov, a invidiat-o pe sora sa şi i-a zis lui Iacov: – Dă-mi copii, altfel voi muri!

And Rachel seeth that she hath not borne to Jacob, and Rachel is envious of her sister, and saith unto Jacob, `Give me sons, and if there is none -- I die.'

2 I acov s-a mâniat pe Rahela şi i-a răspuns: – Sunt eu în locul lui Dumnezeu, Care te-a oprit să ai copii?

And Jacob's anger burneth against Rachel, and he saith, `Am I in stead of God who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?'

3 A poi ea i-a zis: – Aici este sclava mea, Bilha! Intră la ea, pentru ca ea să nască pe genunchii mei şi pentru ca să-mi pot zidi şi eu o familie prin ea.

And she saith, `Lo, my handmaid Bilhah, go in unto her, and she doth bear on my knees, and I am built up, even I, from her;'

4 A stfel, Rahela i-a dat-o de soţie lui Iacov pe sclava ei, Bilha; Iacov a intrat la ea,

and she giveth to him Bilhah her maid-servant for a wife, and Jacob goeth in unto her;

5 i ar ea a rămas însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un fiu.

and Bilhah conceiveth, and beareth to Jacob a son,

6 A tunci Rahela a zis: „Dumnezeu mi-a făcut dreptate, mi-a auzit glasul şi mi-a dat un fiu!“ De aceea i-a pus numele Dan.

and Rachel saith, `God hath decided for me, and also hath hearkened to my voice, and giveth to me a son;' therefore hath she called his name Dan.

7 B ilha, sclava Rahelei, a rămas din nou însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un al doilea fiu.

And Bilhah, Rachel's maid-servant, conceiveth again, and beareth a second son to Jacob,

8 A tunci Rahela a zis: „Cu lupte mari m-am războit cu sora mea şi am biruit!“ De aceea i-a pus numele Neftali.

and Rachel saith, `With wrestlings of God I have wrestled with my sister, yea, I have prevailed;' and she calleth his name Napthali.

9 C ând Lea a văzut că ea a încetat să mai aibă copii, a luat-o pe sclava ei, Zilpa, şi i-a dat-o de soţie lui Iacov.

And Leah seeth that she hath ceased from bearing, and she taketh Zilpah her maid-servant, and giveth her to Jacob for a wife;

10 Z ilpa, sclava Leei, i-a născut un fiu lui Iacov.

and Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant, beareth to Jacob a son,

11 L ea a zis: „Ce noroc!“ şi i-a pus numele Gad.

and Leah saith, `A troop is coming;' and she calleth his name Gad.

12 Z ilpa, sclava Leei, i-a născut lui Iacov un al doilea fiu.

And Zilpah, Leah's maid-servant, beareth a second son to Jacob,

13 L ea a zis: „Cât de fericită sunt, pentru că femeile mă vor numi fericită!“; şi i-a pus numele Aşer.

and Leah saith, `Because of my happiness, for daughters have pronounced me happy;' and she calleth his name Asher.

14 P e vremea seceratului grâului, Ruben a plecat la câmp şi a găsit mandragore pe care le-a adus mamei lui, Lea. Rahela i-a zis Leei: – Te rog, dă-mi şi mie din mandragorele fiului tău.

And Reuben goeth in the days of wheat-harvest, and findeth love-apples in the field, and bringeth them in unto Leah, his mother, and Rachel saith unto Leah, `Give to me, I pray thee, of the love-apples of thy son.'

15 D ar ea a răspuns: – Nu-ţi ajunge că mi-ai luat bărbatul, de vrei să iei şi mandragorele fiului meu? – Bine, a spus Rahela, se poate culca cu tine la noapte în schimbul mandragorelor fiului tău.

And she saith to her, `Is thy taking my husband a little thing, that thou hast taken also the love-apples of my son?' and Rachel saith, `Therefore doth he lie with thee to-night, for thy son's love-apples.'

16 S eara, când Iacov se întorcea de la câmp, Lea i-a ieşit în întâmpinare şi i-a zis: „Trebuie să intri la mine, pentru că te-am cumpărat cu mandragorele fiului meu.“ Astfel, el s-a culcat cu ea în acea noapte.

And Jacob cometh in from the field at evening; and Leah goeth to meet him, and saith, `Unto me dost thou come in, for hiring I have hired thee with my son's love-apples;' and he lieth with her during that night.

17 D umnezeu a ascultat-o pe Lea, iar ea a rămas însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un al cincilea fiu.

And God hearkeneth unto Leah, and she conceiveth, and beareth to Jacob a son, a fifth,

18 L ea a zis: „Dumnezeu m-a răsplătit, pentru că am dat-o pe sclava mea soţului meu.“ Şi i-a pus numele Isahar.

and Leah saith, `God hath given my hire, because I have given my maid-servant to my husband;' and she calleth his name Issachar.

19 L ea a rămas din nou însărcinată şi i-a născut lui Iacov un al şaselea fiu.

And conceive again doth Leah, and she beareth a sixth son to Jacob,

20 E a a zis: „Dumnezeu mi-a oferit un dar preţios! De data aceasta soţul meu mă va onora, pentru că i-am născut şase fii!“ Şi i-a pus celui din urmă numele Zabulon.

and Leah saith, `God hath endowed me -- a good dowry; this time doth my husband dwell with me, for I have borne to him six sons;' and she calleth his name Zebulun;

21 D upă aceea a născut o fiică pe care a numit-o Dina.

and afterwards hath she born a daughter, and calleth her name Dinah.

22 D umnezeu Şi-a adus aminte de Rahela, a ascultat-o şi i-a deschis pântecele.

And God remembereth Rachel, and God hearkeneth unto her, and openeth her womb,

23 E a a rămas însărcinată, a născut un fiu şi a zis: „Dumnezeu mi-a luat ocara!“

and she conceiveth and beareth a son, and saith, `God hath gathered up my reproach;'

24 I -a pus numele Iosif, zicând: „ Domnul să-mi mai adauge un fiu!“ Îmbogăţirea lui Iacov

and she calleth his name Joseph, saying, `Jehovah is adding to me another son.'

25 D upă ce Rahela l-a născut pe Iosif, Iacov i-a zis lui Laban: – Lasă-mă să plec, să mă întorc acasă, în ţara mea.

And it cometh to pass, when Rachel hath borne Joseph, that Jacob saith unto Laban, `Send me away, and I go unto my place, and to my land;

26 D ă-mi soţiile şi copiii pentru care ţi-am slujit, ca astfel să pot pleca, căci ştii cât ţi-am slujit.

give up my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and I go; for thou -- thou hast known my service which I have served thee.'

27 D ar Laban i-a răspuns: – Dacă am găsit bunăvoinţă la tine, te rog să mai rămâi. Am aflat prin ghicire că Domnul m-a binecuvântat datorită ţie;

And Laban saith unto him, `If, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes -- I have observed diligently that Jehovah doth bless me for thy sake.'

28 s pune-mi plata şi ţi-o voi da.

He saith also, `Define thy hire to me, and I give.'

29 A tunci Iacov i-a zis: – Ştii cum ţi-am slujit şi cum le-a mers animalelor cu mine,

And he saith unto him, `Thou -- thou hast known that which I have served thee, and that which thy substance was with me;

30 p entru că puţinul pe care-l aveai înainte să vin eu s-a înmulţit foarte mult; Domnul te-a binecuvântat oriunde m-am dus eu. Acum dar, când voi lucra şi pentru familia mea?

for little which thou hast had at my appearance, and it breaketh forth into a multitude, and Jehovah blesseth thee at my coming; and now, when do I make, I also, for mine own house?'

31 L aban a întrebat: – Ce să-ţi dau? – Nu trebuie să-mi dai nimic, a răspuns Iacov. Dacă vrei să continui să-ţi păstoresc şi să-ţi păzesc turma, fă următorul lucru pentru mine:

And he saith, `What do I give to thee?' And Jacob saith, `Thou dost not give me anything; if thou do for me this thing, I turn back; I have delight; thy flock I watch;

32 l asă-mă să trec astăzi prin turma ta şi să pun deoparte toţi mieii pestriţi şi cu pete, toţi mieii negri şi toţi iezii cu pete şi pestriţi; aceasta să-mi fie plata.

I pass through all thy flock to-day to turn aside from thence every sheep speckled and spotted, and every brown sheep among the lambs, and speckled and spotted among the goats -- and it hath been my hire;

33 Î n viitor, dreptatea mea va vorbi pentru mine atunci când îmi vei vedea plata: tot ce nu va fi pătat sau pestriţ între capre şi negru între miei, dar care va fi găsit la mine, să fie socotit ca furat.

and my righteousness hath answered for me in the day to come, when it cometh in for my hire before thy face; -- every one which is not speckled and spotted among goats, and brown among lambs -- it is stolen with me.'

34 – Bine! a spus Laban. Fie aşa cum ai zis.

And Laban saith, `Lo, O that it were according to thy word;'

35 Î n acea zi, el a pus deoparte ţapii vărgaţi şi cu pete, toate caprele pestriţe şi cu pete, toate cele care aveau alb pe ele, şi toţi mieii negri şi le-a dat în grija fiilor săi.

and he turneth aside during that day the ring-straked and the spotted he-goats, and all the speckled and the spotted she-goats, every one that white in it, and every brown one among the lambs, and he giveth into the hand of his sons,

36 A poi a pus o distanţă de trei zile între el şi Iacov, în timp ce Iacov continua să păstorească restul turmelor lui Laban.

and setteth a journey of three days between himself and Jacob; and Jacob is feeding the rest of the flock of Laban.

37 I acov a luat nuiele verzi de plop, de migdal şi de platan şi le-a descojit, astfel încât să se poată vedea lemnul alb al acestora.

And Jacob taketh to himself a rod of fresh poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut, and doth peel in them white peelings, making bare the white that on the rods,

38 A poi a pus nuielele pe care le-a descojit înaintea oilor, în jgheaburi, adică în adăpătoare, de unde veneau oile să bea, pentru ca ele să zămislească atunci când veneau să bea.

and setteth up the rods which he hath peeled in the gutters in the watering troughs (when the flock cometh in to drink), over-against the flock, that they may conceive in their coming in to drink;

39 O ile au zămislit înaintea nuielelor şi au fătat miei vărgaţi, pestriţi şi cu pete.

and the flocks conceive at the rods, and the flock beareth ring-straked, speckled, and spotted ones.

40 I acov a despărţit mieii, iar oile lui Laban le-a pus cu faţa spre oile negre şi pestriţe. El şi-a pus deoparte turmele lui şi nu le-a amestecat cu cele ale lui Laban.

And the lambs hath Jacob parted, and he putteth the face of the flock towards the ring-straked, also all the brown in the flock of Laban, and he setteth his own droves by themselves, and hath not set them near Laban's flock.

41 O ri de câte ori oile mai puternice erau în călduri, Iacov punea nuiele înaintea lor, în jgheaburi, pentru ca ele să zămislească lângă acestea.

And it hath come to pass whenever the strong ones of the flock conceive, that Jacob set the rods before the eyes of the flock in the gutters, to cause them to conceive by the rods,

42 D ar când oile erau slabe, nu punea nuiele, astfel încât cele slabe erau pentru Laban, iar cele puternice, pentru Iacov.

and when the flock is feeble, he doth not set; and the feeble ones have been Laban's, and the strong ones Jacob's.

43 A cest om s-a îmbogăţit foarte mult şi avea multe turme, sclave şi sclavi, cămile şi măgari.

And the man increaseth very exceedingly, and hath many flocks, and maid-servants, and men-servants, and camels, and asses.
