1 P e vremea lui David a fost o foamete timp de trei ani la rând. David L-a întrebat pe Domnul şi Domnul i-a zis: „Din cauza lui Saul şi a Casei lui sângeroase a venit această foamete, deoarece i-a ucis pe ghivoniţi.“

And there is a famine in the days of David three years, year after year, and David seeketh the face of Jehovah, and Jehovah saith, `For Saul and for the bloody house, because that he put to death the Gibeonites.'

2 R egele i-a chemat pe ghivoniţi ca să le vorbească. (Ghivoniţii nu erau israeliţi; ei erau o rămăşiţă a amoriţilor. Israeliţii le-au jurat că-i vor cruţa, însă Saul, în râvna lui pentru Israel şi Iuda, a încercat să-i nimicească).

And the king calleth for the Gibeonites, and saith unto them -- as to the Gibeonites, they not of the sons of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorite, and the sons of Israel had sworn to them, and Saul seeketh to smite them in his zeal for the sons of Israel and Judah --

3 D avid i-a întrebat pe ghivoniţi: – Ce ar trebui să fac pentru voi? Cum aş putea să fac ispăşire ca să binecuvântaţi moştenirea Domnului ?

yea, David saith unto the Gibeonites, `What do I do for you? and with what do I make atonement? and bless ye the inheritance of Jehovah.'

4 – Nu vrem nici argint, nici aur de la Saul şi de la familia sa, i-au răspuns ghivoniţii. De asemenea, nu este treaba noastră să omorâm pe cineva din Israel. – Voi face ceea ce-mi cereţi, le-a zis regele.

And the Gibeonites say to him, `We have no silver and gold by Saul and by his house, and we have no man to put to death in Israel;' and he saith, `What ye are saying I do to you.'

5 A tunci ei i-au zis regelui: – Fiindcă omul acesta ne-a distrus şi-şi pusese în gând să ne nimicească ca să dispărem de pe întreg teritoriul lui Israel,

And they say unto the king, `The man who consumed us, and who devised against us -- we have been destroyed from stationing ourselves in all the border of Israel --

6 s ă ni se dea şapte bărbaţi dintre fiii lui ca să-i spânzurăm înaintea Domnului, în Ghiva lui Saul, alesul Domnului. – Bine, le-a răspuns regele, vi-i voi da.

let there be given to us seven men of his sons, and we have hanged them before Jehovah, in the height of Saul, the chosen of Jehovah.' And the king saith, `I do give;'

7 R egele, din pricina jurământului făcut înaintea Domnului între el şi Ionatan, fiul lui Saul, l-a cruţat însă pe Mefiboşet, fiul lui Ionatan, fiul lui Saul.

and the king hath pity on Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, son of Saul, because of the oath of Jehovah that between them, between David and Jonathan son of Saul;

8 I -a luat pe Armoni şi pe Mefiboşet, cei doi fii pe care i-i născuse lui Saul Riţpa, fiica lui Aia, împreună cu cei cinci fii pe care i-i născuse Merab, fiica lui Saul, lui Adriel, fiul lui Barzilai meholatitul,

and the king taketh the two sons of Rizpah daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth, and the five sons of Michal daughter of Saul whom she bare to Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite,

9 ş i i-a dat în mâinile ghivoniţilor. Aceştia i-au spânzurat înaintea Domnului, pe un deal. Toţi cei şapte au murit împreună, fiind ucişi în primele zile ale seceratului, la începutul seceratului orzului.

and giveth them into the hand of the Gibeonites, and they hang them in the hill before Jehovah; and the seven fall together, and they have been put to death in the days of harvest, in the first, the commencement of barley-harvest.

10 R iţpa, fiica lui Aia, a luat un sac şi l-a întins sub ea pe o stâncă. De la începutul seceratului şi până când a început să cadă ploaia peste trupuri, ea le-a păzit în timpul zilei de păsările văzduhului şi în timpul nopţii de animalele sălbatice.

And Rizpah daughter of Aiah taketh the sackcloth, and stretcheth it out for herself on the rock, from the commencement of harvest till water hath been poured out upon them from the heavens, and hath not suffered a fowl of the heavens to rest upon them by day, or the beast of the field by night.

11 S punându-i-se lui David ce făcea Riţpa, fiica lui Aia, ţiitoarea lui Saul,

And it is declared to David that which Rizpah daughter of Aiah, concubine of Saul, hath done,

12 a cesta s-a dus şi a adus osemintele lui Saul şi ale fiului său Ionatan de la locuitorii Iabeş-Ghiladului (aceştia le furaseră din piaţa din Bet-Şan, unde le puseseră filistenii în ziua când l-au ucis pe Saul la Ghilboa).

and David goeth and taketh the bones of Saul, and the bones of Jonathan his son, from the possessors of Jabesh-Gilead, who had stolen them from the broad place of Beth-Shan, where the Philistines hanged them, in the day of the Philistines smiting Saul in Gilboa;

13 A adus de acolo osemintele lui Saul şi ale fiului său Ionatan şi au fost adunate, de asemenea, şi rămăşiţele celor care tocmai fuseseră spânzuraţi.

and he bringeth up thence the bones of Saul, and the bones of Jonathan his son, and they gather the bones of those hanged,

14 A u înmormântat osemintele lui Saul şi ale fiului său Ionatan în teritoriul lui Beniamin, la Ţela, în mormântul tatălui său, Chiş. Şi au făcut tot ce poruncise regele. În urma acestor fapte, Dumnezeu a răspuns rugăciunilor făcute pentru ţară. Bătălii împotriva filistenilor

and bury the bones of Saul and of Jonathan his son in the land of Benjamin, in Zelah, in the burying-place of Kish his father, and do all that the king commanded, and God is entreated for the land afterwards.

15 Î ntre filisteni şi Israel a avut loc o nouă bătălie, iar David a pornit la luptă împotriva filistenilor, împreună cu oamenii săi. David însă a obosit.

And again have the Philistines war with Israel, and David goeth down, and his servants with him, and they fight with the Philistines; and David is weary,

16 I şbi-Benob, unul dintre urmaşii lui Rafa, care avea o suliţă cu un vârf de bronz în greutate de trei sute de şecheli şi care era încins cu o sabie nouă, şi-a pus în gând să-l omoare pe David.

and Ishbi-Benob, who among the children of the giant -- the weight of his spear three hundred weight of brass, and he is girded with a new one -- speaketh of smiting David,

17 Î n ajutorul lui David a venit însă Abişai, fiul Ţeruiei, care l-a lovit pe filistean şi l-a ucis. Atunci oamenii lui David i-au jurat spunându-i: „Nu vei mai merge împreună cu noi la război pentru ca să nu stingi lumina lui Israel.“

and Abishai son of Zeruiah giveth help to him, and smiteth the Philistine, and putteth him to death; then swear the men of David to him, saying, `Thou dost not go out again with us to battle, nor quench the lamp of Israel.'

18 D upă aceea, o altă bătălie împotriva filistenilor a avut loc la Gob. Cu acest prilej, huşatitul Sibecai l-a ucis pe Saf, unul dintre urmaşii lui Rafa.

And it cometh to pass afterwards, that the battle is again in Gob with the Philistines, then hath Sibbechai the Hushathite smitten Saph, who among the children of the giant.

19 Î n timpul unei alte lupte cu filistenii la Gob, Elhanan, fiul betleemitului Iaare-Oreghim, l-a ucis pe Goliat ghititul, care avea o suliţă al cărei mâner era ca sulul unui ţesător.

And the battle is again in Gob with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim, the Beth-Lehemite, smiteth Goliath the Gittite, and the wood of his spear like a beam of weavers.

20 S -a mai dat o luptă la Gat. Acolo era un bărbat uriaş, care avea câte şase degete la ambele mâini şi la ambele picioare – douăzeci şi patru în total. Şi acesta se trăgea din Rafa.

And the battle is again in Gath, and there is a man of stature, and the fingers of his hands six, and the toes of his feet six, twenty and four in number, and he also hath been born to the giant,

21 E l a batjocorit pe Israel, dar Ionatan, fiul lui Şimea, fratele lui David, l-a ucis.

and he reproacheth Israel, and smite him doth Jonathan son of Shimeah, brother of David;

22 A ceştia patru i s-au născut lui Rafa în Gat; ei au fost ucişi de David şi de slujitorii săi.

these four have been born to the giant in Gath, and they fall by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.
