1 A dam a cunoscut-o pe soţia sa, Eva, iar ea a rămas însărcinată şi l-a născut pe Cain. Ea a zis: „Am căpătat un om cu ajutorul Domnului. “

And the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceiveth and beareth Cain, and saith, `I have gotten a man by Jehovah;'

2 A poi l-a născut pe Abel, fratele lui Cain. Abel era păstor, iar Cain – plugar.

and she addeth to bear his brother, even Abel. And Abel is feeding a flock, and Cain hath been servant of the ground.

3 D upă o vreme, Cain I-a adus Domnului o jertfă din rodul pământului,

And it cometh to pass at the end of days that Cain bringeth from the fruit of the ground a present to Jehovah;

4 i ar Abel I-a adus o jertfă din întâii născuţi ai turmei sale şi din grăsimea lor. Domnul a privit cu plăcere spre Abel şi jertfa lui,

and Abel, he hath brought, he also, from the female firstlings of his flock, even from their fat ones; and Jehovah looketh unto Abel and unto his present,

5 î nsă spre Cain şi jertfa lui nu a privit cu plăcere. Cain s-a mâniat foarte tare şi i s-a posomorât faţa.

and unto Cain and unto his present He hath not looked; and it is very displeasing to Cain, and his countenance is fallen.

6 D omnul i-a zis lui Cain: „De ce te-ai mâniat şi de ce ţi s-a posomorât faţa?

And Jehovah saith unto Cain, `Why hast thou displeasure? and why hath thy countenance fallen?

7 D acă faci ce este bine, oare nu vei fi primit? Dar dacă nu faci ce este bine, păcatul pândeşte la uşă, dorinţa lui este să te domine, dar tu trebuie să-l stăpâneşti.“

Is there not, if thou dost well, acceptance? and if thou dost not well, at the opening a sin-offering is crouching, and unto thee its desire, and thou rulest over it.'

8 C ain i-a zis fratelui său, Abel: „Haidem să ieşim la câmp! “ Pe când se aflau acolo, Cain l-a lovit pe fratele său, Abel, şi l-a omorât.

And Cain saith unto Abel his brother, and it cometh to pass in their being in the field, that Cain riseth up against Abel his brother, and slayeth him.

9 A tunci Domnul l-a întrebat pe Cain: – Unde este fratele tău, Abel? – Nu ştiu, a răspuns el. Sunt eu păzitorul fratelui meu?

And Jehovah saith unto Cain, `Where Abel thy brother?' and he saith, `I have not known; my brother's keeper -- I?'

10 D omnul i-a zis: – Ce ai făcut? Ascultă: glasul sângelui fratelui tău strigă din pământ către Mine!

And He saith, `What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood is crying unto Me from the ground;

11 A cum eşti blestemat de pământul care şi-a deschis gura să primească sângele fratelui tău din mâna ta.

and now, cursed thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive the blood of thy brother from thy hand;

12 C ând vei ara pământul, el nu-ţi va mai da recolta; pe pământ vei fi un pribeag, un rătăcitor.

when thou tillest the ground, it doth not add to give its strength to thee -- a wanderer, even a trembling one, thou art in the earth.'

13 C ain I-a spus Domnului: – Pedeapsa mea este prea mare ca s-o pot purta.

And Cain saith unto Jehovah, `Greater is my punishment than to be borne;

14 D in moment ce m-ai izgonit astăzi de pe faţa pământului şi trebuie să mă ascund de faţa Ta şi să devin un pribeag, un rătăcitor pe pământ, atunci oricine mă va întâlni mă va ucide.

lo, Thou hast driven me to-day from off the face of the ground, and from Thy face I am hid; and I have been a wanderer, even a trembling one, in the earth, and it hath been -- every one finding me doth slay me.'

15 D omnul i-a răspuns: – Nu va fi aşa; dacă cineva îl va ucide pe Cain, Cain va fi răzbunat de şapte ori. Domnul a hotărât un semn pentru Cain, pentru ca oricine îl va găsi să nu-l omoare.

And Jehovah saith to him, `Therefore -- of any slayer of Cain sevenfold it is required;' and Jehovah setteth to Cain a token that none finding him doth slay him.

16 C ain a plecat din prezenţa Domnului şi s-a aşezat în ţara Nod, la răsărit de Eden. Începuturile civilizaţiei

And Cain goeth out from before Jehovah, and dwelleth in the land, moving about east of Eden;

17 C ain a cunoscut-o pe soţia sa, iar ea a rămas însărcinată şi l-a născut pe Enoh. Cain a construit o cetate şi a numit-o Enoh, după numele fiului său.

and Cain knoweth his wife, and she conceiveth, and beareth Enoch; and he is building a city, and he calleth the name of the city, according to the name of his son -- Enoch.

18 L ui Enoh i s-a născut Irad, iar Irad a fost tatăl lui Mehuiael. Mehuiael a fost tatăl lui Metuşael, iar Metuşael a fost tatăl lui Lameh.

And born to Enoch is Irad; and Irad hath begotten Mehujael; and Mehujael hath begotten Methusael; and Methusael hath begotten Lamech.

19 L ameh şi-a luat două soţii: pe una o chema Ada, iar pe cealaltă – Ţila.

And Lamech taketh to himself two wives, the name of the one Adah, and the name of the second Zillah.

20 A da l-a născut pe Iabal; el a fost tatăl celor care locuiesc în corturi şi au turme.

And Adah beareth Jabal, he hath been father of those inhabiting tents and purchased possessions;

21 N umele fratelui său era Iubal; el a fost tatăl tuturor celor care cântă cu lira şi cu fluierul.

and the name of his brother Jubal, he hath been father of every one handling harp and organ.

22 Ţ ila l-a născut pe Tubal-Cain, care a făcut tot felul de unelte din bronz şi fier. Sora lui Tubal-Cain a fost Naama.

And Zillah she also bare Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron; and a sister of Tubal-Cain Naamah.

23 L ameh le-a spus soţiilor sale: „Ada şi Ţila, ascultaţi-mă! Soţii ale lui Lameh, luaţi aminte la ce vă spun! Am omorât un om pentru că m-a rănit, un tânăr pentru că m-a lovit.

And Lamech saith to his wives: -- `Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, give ear my saying: For a man I have slain for my wound, Even a young man for my hurt;

24 D acă de şapte ori va fi răzbunat Cain, Lameh va fi răzbunat de şaptezeci şi şapte de ori.“

For sevenfold is required for Cain, And for Lamech seventy and sevenfold.'

25 A dam a cunoscut-o din nou pe soţia sa. Aceasta a născut un fiu pe care l-a numit Set, zicând: „Dumnezeu mi-a dăruit un alt urmaş în locul lui Abel, întrucât el a fost omorât de Cain.“

And Adam again knoweth his wife, and she beareth a son, and calleth his name Seth, `for God hath appointed for me another seed instead of Abel:' for Cain had slain him.

26 L ui Set i s-a născut un fiu căruia i-a pus numele Enoş. Atunci au început oamenii să cheme Numele Domnului.

And to Seth, to him also a son hath been born, and he calleth his name Enos; then a beginning was made of preaching in the name of Jehovah.
