1 I oab a fost înştiinţat că David plânge şi-l jeleşte pe Absalom.

And it is declared to Joab, `Lo, the king is weeping and mourning for Absalom;'

2 A stfel, acea zi, care trebuia să fie o zi de biruinţă, s-a transformat într-o zi de jale pentru întreg poporul, căci poporul a aflat în acea zi că regele îşi jeleşte fiul.

and the salvation on that day becometh mourning to all the people, for the people hath heard on that day, saying, `The king hath been grieved for his son.'

3 Î n aceeaşi zi, oştirea a intrat pe furiş în cetate, ca nişte oameni ruşinaţi că au fugit din luptă.

And the people stealeth away, on that day, to go in to the city, as the people steal away, who are ashamed, in their fleeing in battle;

4 R egele îşi acoperise faţa şi striga în gura mare: „Fiul meu Absalom! Absalom, fiul meu, fiul meu!“

and the king hath covered his face, yea, the king crieth -- a loud voice -- `My son Absalom, Absalom, my son, my son.'

5 I oab a intrat în palat la rege şi i-a zis: „Tu astăzi acoperi de ruşine feţele tuturor slujitorilor tăi, cei care ţi-au salvat viaţa ţie, fiilor, fiicelor, soţiilor şi ţiitoarelor tale.

And Joab cometh in unto the king to the house, and saith, `Thou hast put to shame to-day the faces of all thy servants, those delivering thy life to-day, and the life of thy sons, and of thy daughters, and the life of thy wives, and the life of thy concubines,

6 T u îi iubeşti pe cei ce te urăsc şi îi urăşti pe cei ce te iubesc, căci astăzi ne-ai arătat că, pentru tine, conducătorii şi războinicii nu înseamnă nimic. Înţeleg că, dacă Absalom ar fi viu, iar noi toţi am fi morţi, tu ai fi mai mulţumit.

to love thine enemies, and to hate those loving thee, for thou hast declared to-day that thou hast no princes and servants, for I have known to-day that if Absalom alive, and all of us to-day dead, that then it were right in thine eyes.

7 A şadar, ridică-te, ieşi afară şi vorbeşte pe placul slujitorilor tăi, pentru că, dacă nu vei face acest lucru, îţi jur pe Domnul că toţi te vor părăsi în noaptea aceasta. Această nenorocire ar fi astfel mai mare decât toate nenorocirile care ţi s-au întâmplat din tinereţe şi până astăzi.

`And now, rise, go out and speak unto the heart of thy servants, for by Jehovah I have sworn, that -- thou art not going out -- there doth not lodge a man with thee to-night; and this worse for thee than all the evil that hath come upon thee from thy youth till now.'

8 R egele s-a dus la poartă şi a stat acolo. S-a dat de veste poporului: „Iată că regele stă la poartă!“ Şi tot poporul a venit înaintea regelui. David se întoarce la Ierusalim Între timp, israeliţii fugiseră cu toţii la corturile lor.

And the king riseth, and sitteth in the gate, and to all the people they have declared, saying, `Lo, the king is sitting in the gate;' and all the people come in before the king, and Israel hath fled, each to his tents.

9 Î n toate seminţiile lui Israel, toţi oamenii vorbeau între ei şi ziceau: „Regele ne-a eliberat de sub puterea duşmanilor noştri. El a fost cel care ne-a izbăvit de sub puterea filistenilor, iar acum a trebuit să fugă din ţară, izgonit de Absalom.

And it cometh to pass, all the people are contending through all the tribes of Israel, saying, `The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, yea, he himself delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines, and now he hath fled out of the land because of Absalom,

10 A cum însă Absalom, pe care l-am uns să domnească peste noi, a murit în luptă. Prin urmare, de ce nu spuneţi nimic ca să-l aduceţi pe rege înapoi?“

and Absalom whom we anointed over us dead in battle, and now, why are ye silent -- to bring back the king?'

11 C ând regele David a aflat ce vorbesc între ei toţi israeliţii, a trimis acest mesaj preoţilor Ţadok şi Abiatar: „Întrebaţi-i pe cei din sfatul bătrânilor lui Iuda: «De ce trebuie să fiţi voi cei de pe urmă care să-l aduceţi pe rege înapoi acasă?

And king David sent unto Zadok and unto Abiathar the priests, saying, `Speak ye unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye last to bring back the king unto his house? (and the word of all Israel hath come unto the king, unto his house;)

12 V oi sunteţi din aceeaşi seminţie cu mine; prin urmare, de ce trebuie să fiţi ultimii care să-l aduceţi acasă pe rege?»“

my brethren ye, my bone and my flesh ye, and why are ye last to bring back the king?

13 I ar lui Amasa să-i spuneţi: „Nu eşti tu os din oasele mele şi carne din carnea mea? Dumnezeu să se poarte cu mine cu toată asprimea dacă, de azi înainte, nu vei fi tu conducătorul oştirii, în locul lui Ioab.“

And to Amasa say ye, Art not thou my bone and my flesh? Thus doth God do to me, and thus He doth add, if thou art not head of the host before me all the days instead of Joab.'

14 R egele a câştigat inima tuturor bărbaţilor din Iuda, ca şi cum aceştia ar fi fost un singur om. Ei au trimis vorbă regelui, spunându-i: „Întoarce-te împreună cu slujitorii tăi.“

And he inclineth the heart of all the men of Judah as one man, and they send unto the king, `Turn back, thou, and all thy servants.'

15 R egele s-a întors. El a ajuns la un moment dat la Iordan. Între timp, cei din Iuda veniseră la Ghilgal pentru a-l întâmpina pe rege şi a-l trece Iordanul.

And the king turneth back, and cometh in unto the Jordan, and Judah hath come to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over the Jordan,

16 B eniamitul Şimei, fiul lui Ghera, din Bahurim, s-a grăbit să vină împreună cu cei din Iuda în întâmpinarea regelui David.

and Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite, who from Bahurim, hasteth, and cometh down with the men of Judah, to meet king David,

17 O mie de bărbaţi din Beniamin îl însoţeau. Alături de ei se afla şi Ţiba, slujitorul familiei lui Saul, împreună cu cei cincizeci de fii ai lui şi douăzeci de slujitori. Au venit în grabă la Iordan, unde era şi regele.

and a thousand men with him from Benjamin, and Ziba servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him, and they have gone prosperously over the Jordan before the king.

18 E l a trecut vadul ca să ajute familia regelui să traverseze şi ca să facă orice altceva ar mai fi dorit regele. După ce a trecut Iordanul, Şimei, fiul lui Ghera, s-a plecat înaintea regelui şi

And passed over hath the ferry-boat to carry over the household of the king, and to do that which good in his eyes, and Shimei son of Gera hath fallen before the king in his passing over into Jordan,

19 i -a zis: – Fie ca stăpânul meu să nu ia în seamă nelegiuirea mea şi să nu-şi aducă aminte de răul pe care slujitorul său i l-a făcut în ziua în care stăpânul meu, regele, părăsea Ierusalimul. Să nu pună regele la inimă lucrul acesta.

and saith unto the king, `Let not my lord impute to me iniquity; neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely in the day that my lord the king went out from Jerusalem, -- for the king to set unto his heart;

20 S lujitorul tău recunoaşte că a păcătuit, dar iată că astăzi vin primul din întreaga Casă a lui Iosif ca să-l întâmpin pe stăpânul meu, regele.

for thy servant hath known that I have sinned; and lo, I have come to-day, first of all the house of Joseph, to go down to meet my lord the king.'

21 A bişai, fiul Ţeruiei, a zis: – Nu trebuie oare ca Şimei să moară pentru că l-a blestemat pe unsul Domnului ?

And Abishai son of Zeruiah answereth and saith, `For this is not Shimei put to death -- because he reviled the anointed of Jehovah?'

22 – Ce am eu de-a face cu voi, fii ai Ţeruiei? i-a răspuns regele. De ce îmi sunteţi astăzi împotrivă? Astăzi să fie oare pedepsit cu moartea vreun om în Israel? Nu ştiu eu că astăzi sunt rege peste Israel?

And David saith, `What -- to me and to you, O sons of Zeruiah, that ye are to me to-day for an adversary? to-day is any man put to death in Israel? for have I not known that to-day I king over Israel?'

23 A poi regele i-a zis lui Şimei: – Nu vei muri! Şi regele i-a promis printr-un jurământ.

And the king saith unto Shimei, `Thou dost not die;' and the king sweareth to him.

24 Î n întâmpinarea regelui a venit, de asemenea, şi Mefiboşet, nepotul lui Saul. Acesta nu-şi îngrijise picioarele, nu-şi aranjase barba şi nu-şi spălase hainele din ziua în care regele plecase şi până când acesta sosise în pace.

And Mephibosheth son of Saul hath come down to meet the king -- and he prepared not his feet, nor did he prepare his upper lip, yea, his garments he washed not, even from the day of the going away of the king, till the day that he came in peace --

25 C ând a sosit de la Ierusalim în întâmpinarea regelui, acesta l-a întrebat: – Mefiboşet, de ce nu ai venit cu mine?

and it cometh to pass, when he hath come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king saith to him, `Why didst thou not go with me, Mephibosheth?'

26 – O, rege, stăpânul meu! i-a răspuns Mefiboşet. Slujitorul tău, fiind olog, s-a gândit: „Voi înşeua un măgar şi, călare pe el, voi putea merge cu regele.“ Slujitorul meu însă m-a trădat.

And he saith, `My lord, O king, my servant deceived me, for thy servant said, I saddle for me the ass, and ride on it, and go with the king, for thy servant lame;

27 L -a defăimat pe slujitorul tău înaintea stăpânului meu, regele. Însă stăpânul meu, regele, este ca un înger al lui Dumnezeu: fă ce vei crede de cuviinţă.

and he uttereth slander against thy servant unto my lord the king, and my lord the king as a messenger of God; and do thou that which is good in thine eyes,

28 Î ntregul neam al bunicului meu nu merită nimic decât moartea din partea stăpânului meu, regele. Cu toate acestea, tu i-ai dat voie slujitorului tău să mănânce la masa ta. Ce alt drept aş mai putea cere de la rege?

for all the house of my father have been nothing except men of death before my lord the king, and thou dost set thy servant among those eating at thy table, and what right have I any more -- even to cry any more unto the king?'

29 – Ce mai vorbeşti atâta? i-a zis regele. Am hotărât: tu şi Ţiba veţi împărţi pământul.

And the king saith to him, `Why dost thou speak any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba -- share ye the field.'

30 – Poate să ia el chiar tot acum, de vreme ce stăpânul meu, regele, s-a întors teafăr acasă, i-a răspuns Mefiboşet.

And Mephibosheth saith unto the king, `Yea, the whole let him take, after that my lord the king hath come in peace unto his house.'

31 G hiladitul Barzilai a venit şi el din Roghelim şi l-a însoţit pe rege până dincolo de Iordan, lăsându-l apoi să-şi vadă de drum.

And Barzillai the Gileadite hath gone down from Rogelim, and passeth over the Jordan with the king, to send him away over the Jordan;

32 B arzilai era foarte bătrân – avea optzeci de ani – şi, deoarece era un om foarte bogat, îngrijise de rege cât timp acesta a locuit la Mahanayim.

and Barzillai very aged, a son of eighty years, and he hath sustained the king in his abiding in Mahanaim, for he a very great man;

33 R egele i-a zis lui Barzilai: – Vino cu mine la Ierusalim şi eu voi îngriji de tine.

and the king saith unto Barzillai, `Pass thou over with me, and I have sustained thee with me in Jerusalem.'

34 – Oare câţi ani voi mai trăi, ca să mă sui la Ierusalim cu regele? l-a întrebat Barzilai.

And Barzillai saith unto the king, `How many the days of the years of my life, that I go up with the king to Jerusalem?

35 A m ajuns la optzeci de ani. Pot eu să mai fac deosebirea între ceea ce este bun şi ceea ce este rău? Poate slujitorul tău să mai simtă gustul mâncării şi al băuturii? Pot eu să mai ascult cântecele cântăreţilor şi ale cântăreţelor? Şi de ce să fie slujitorul tău o povară în plus pentru stăpânul meu, regele?

A son of eighty years I to-day; do I know between good and evil? doth thy servant taste that which I am eating, and that which I drink? do I hearken any more to the voice of singers and songstresses? and why is thy servant any more for a burden unto my lord the king?

36 S lujitorul tău îl va însoţi pe rege dincolo de Iordan doar o mică distanţă. Oricum, de ce mi-ar oferi regele o asemenea răsplată?

As a little thing, thy servant doth pass over the Jordan with the king, and why doth the king recompense me this recompense?

37 D ă-i voie, te rog, slujitorului tău să se întoarcă şi să moară în cetatea sa, unde sunt înmormântaţi tatăl său şi mama sa. Iată însă că aici este slujitorul tău, Chimham. Să-l ia stăpânul meu, regele, cu el şi să se poarte faţă de el cum va crede de cuviinţă.

Let, I pray thee, thy servant turn back again, and I die in mine own city, near the burying-place of my father and of my mother, -- and lo, thy servant Chimham, let him pass over with my lord the king, and do thou to him that which good in thine eyes.'

38 – Bine, i-a zis regele. Chimham va veni cu mine şi mă voi purta cu el aşa cum vei dori tu, iar tu, orice vei cere de la mine îţi voi dărui.

And the king saith, `With me doth Chimham go over, and I do to him that which good in thine eyes, yea, all that thou dost fix on me I do to thee.'

39 Î ntreg poporul a trecut Iordanul. În cele din urmă l-a trecut şi regele. Acesta l-a sărutat şi l-a binecuvântat pe Barzilai, care s-a întors acasă.

And all the people pass over the Jordan, and the king hath passed over, and the king giveth a kiss to Barzillai, and blesseth him, and he turneth back to his place.

40 R egele s-a îndreptat spre Ghilgal împreună cu Chimham. Întreaga oştire a lui Iuda şi jumătate din oştirea lui Israel îl însoţeau.

And the king passeth over to Gilgal, and Chimham hath passed over with him, and all the people of Judah, and they bring over the king, and also the half of the people of Israel.

41 T oţi bărbaţii lui Israel au venit însă la rege şi i-au zis: – De ce bărbaţii lui Iuda, fraţii noştri, te-au furat şi l-au trecut pe rege Iordanul împreună cu familia lui şi cu toţi oamenii lui David?

And, lo, all the men of Israel are coming unto the king, and they say unto the king, `Wherefore have they stolen thee -- our brethren, the men of Judah?' (and they bring the king and his household over the Jordan, and all the men of David with him).

42 B ărbaţii lui Iuda le-au dat bărbaţilor lui Israel următorul răspuns: – Pentru că regele este rudă cu noi. Deci de ce vă mâniaţi pentru acest lucru? Am mâncat noi pe cheltuiala regelui? Am primit noi vreun dar din partea lui?

And all the men of Judah answer against the men of Israel, `Because the king near unto us, and why this -- ye are displeased about this matter? have we at all eaten of the king's a gift hath he lifted up to us?'

43 B ărbaţii lui Israel le-au zis bărbaţilor lui Iuda: – Noi avem, de zece ori mai mult decât voi, dreptul la rege! Chiar la David avem mai mult drept decât voi! Aşadar, de ce ne dispreţuiţi? Noi am fost cei dintâi care l-am chemat pe regele nostru înapoi. Cuvintele bărbaţilor lui Iuda au avut însă mai mare greutate decât cuvintele bărbaţilor lui Israel.

And the men of Israel answer the men of Judah, and say, `Ten parts we have in the king, and also in David more than you; and wherefore have ye lightly esteemed us, that our word hath not been first to bring back our king?' And the word of the men of Judah is sharper than the word of the men of Israel.
