1 F iul meu, dacă ai girat pentru semenul tău, dacă ai bătut palma pentru un străin,

My son! if thou hast been surety for thy friend, Hast stricken for a stranger thy hand,

2 d acă eşti legat de ceea ce ai spus şi eşti prins de cuvintele gurii tale,

Hast been snared with sayings of thy mouth, Hast been captured with sayings of thy mouth,

3 i ată ce să faci acum, fiule, ca să te eliberezi, căci ai căzut în mâna semenului tău: smereşte-te îndată şi stăruieşte înaintea semenului tău!

Do this now, my son, and be delivered, For thou hast come into the hand of thy friend. Go, trample on thyself, and strengthen thy friend,

4 N u da somn ochilor tăi, nici odihnă pleoapelor tale.

Give not sleep to thine eyes, And slumber to thine eyelids,

5 E liberează-te pe tine însuţi ca o gazelă din mâna vânătorului, ca o pasăre din plasa păsărarului.

Be delivered as a roe from the hand, And as a bird from the hand of a fowler.

6 D u-te la furnică, leneşule! Uită-te cu atenţie la căile ei şi fii înţelept!

Go unto the ant, O slothful one, See her ways and be wise;

7 D eşi nu are nici conducător, nici supraveghetor, nici dregător,

Which hath not captain, overseer, and ruler,

8 t otuşi, ea îşi strânge provizii în timpul verii şi adună hrană la vremea secerişului.

She doth prepare in summer her bread, She hath gathered in harvest her food.

9 C ât timp vei mai sta culcat, leneşule? Când te vei scula din somnul tău?

Till when, O slothful one, dost thou lie? When dost thou arise from thy sleep?

10 S ă mai dormi puţin, să mai aţipeşti puţin, să mai încrucişezi puţin mâinile ca să dormi…

A little sleep, a little slumber, A little clasping of the hands to rest,

11 ş i sărăcia vine peste tine ca un hoţ, iar lipsa – ca un om înarmat.

And thy poverty hath come as a traveller, And thy want as an armed man.

12 O mul de nimic, individul nelegiuit umblă cu neadevărul în gură,

A man of worthlessness, a man of iniquity, Walking perverseness of mouth,

13 c lipeşte răutăcios din ochi, dă din picior şi face semn cu degetele;

Winking with his eyes, speaking with his feet, Directing with his fingers,

14 u nelteşte răul cu lucrurile stricate din inima lui şi întotdeauna răspândeşte discordii.

Frowardness in his heart, devising evil at all times, Contentions he sendeth forth.

15 D e aceea distrugerea lui va veni pe neaşteptate; va fi zdrobit deodată şi fără leac.

Therefore suddenly cometh his calamity, Instantly he is broken -- and no healing.

16 I ată şase lucruri pe care le urăşte Domnul, sunt chiar şapte cele pe care le dispreţuieşte:

These six hath Jehovah hated, Yea, seven abominations to His soul.

17 o chii sfidători, limba mincinoasă, mâinile care varsă sânge nevinovat,

Eyes high -- tongues false -- And hands shedding innocent blood --

18 i nima care urzeşte planuri nelegiuite, picioarele care aleargă repede la rău,

A heart devising thoughts of vanity -- Feet hasting to run to evil --

19 m artorul mincinos, care rosteşte minciuni, şi cel ce răspândeşte discordii între fraţi. Avertisment împotriva adulterului

A false witness doth breathe out lies -- And one sending forth contentions between brethren.

20 F iul meu, păstrează îndrumările tatălui tău şi nu uita învăţătura mamei tale.

Keep, my son, the command of thy father, And leave not the law of thy mother.

21 L eagă-le pentru totdeauna la pieptul tău, prinde-le în jurul gâtului tău.

Bind them on thy heart continually, Tie them on thy neck.

22 C ând mergi, acestea te vor conduce; când dormi, te vor veghea; iar când te vei trezi, îţi vor vorbi.

In thy going up and down, it leadeth thee, In thy lying down, it watcheth over thee, And thou hast awaked -- it talketh thee.

23 C ăci porunca este o candelă, învăţătura este o lumină, iar mustrarea disciplinară este calea spre viaţă.

For a lamp the command, And the law a light, And a way of life reproofs of instruction,

24 E le te vor proteja de femeia imorală, de limba măgulitoare a femeii străine.

To preserve thee from an evil woman, From the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

25 N -o pofti în inima ta pentru frumuseţea ei şi nu te lăsa fascinat de pleoapele ei.

Desire not her beauty in thy heart, And let her not take thee with her eyelids.

26 C ăci din cauza femeii prostituate, ajungi să rămâi doar cu o bucată de pâine, şi soţia altuia îţi răpeşte viaţa îmbelşugată.

For a harlot consumeth unto a cake of bread, And an adulteress the precious soul hunteth.

27 P oate cineva să ia foc în sân fără să i se ardă hainele?

Doth a man take fire into his bosom, And are his garments not burnt?

28 S au poate merge cineva pe cărbuni aprinşi fără să-i ardă picioarele?

Doth a man walk on the hot coals, And are his feet not scorched?

29 T ot aşa este şi cu cel ce se culcă cu soţia altuia: oricine se atinge de ea nu va rămâne nepedepsit.

So he who hath gone in unto the wife of his neighbour, None who doth touch her is innocent.

30 O amenii nu dispreţuiesc un hoţ dacă el fură ca să-şi aline foamea când este înfometat,

They do not despise the thief, When he stealeth to fill his soul when he is hungry,

31 î nsă dacă este prins va plăti înşeptit, chiar dacă va trebui să dea toată averea din casa lui.

And being found he repayeth sevenfold, All the substance of his house he giveth.

32 U n om care comite adulter însă este fără minte! Oricine face aşa îşi ruinează sufletul.

He who committeth adultery a woman lacketh heart, He is destroying his soul who doth it.

33 V a avea parte de răni şi dezonoare, iar ruşinea nu i se va şterge.

A stroke and shame he doth find, And his reproach is not wiped away,

34 C ăci gelozia înfurie pe un bărbat, şi el nu va avea milă în ziua răzbunării;

For jealousy the fury of a man, And he doth not spare in a day of vengeance.

35 n u va accepta nici o despăgubire şi va refuza darul, oricât de mare ar fi el.

He accepteth not the appearance of any atonement, Yea, he doth not consent, Though thou dost multiply bribes!
