Hast been snared with sayings of thy mouth, Hast been captured with sayings of thy mouth,

3 F ais donc ceci, mon fils, dégage-toi, Puisque tu es tombé au pouvoir de ton prochain; Va, prosterne-toi, et fais des instances auprès de lui;

Do this now, my son, and be delivered, For thou hast come into the hand of thy friend. Go, trample on thyself, and strengthen thy friend,

4 N e donne ni sommeil à tes yeux, Ni assoupissement à tes paupières;

Give not sleep to thine eyes, And slumber to thine eyelids,

5 D égage-toi comme la gazelle de la main du chasseur, Comme l'oiseau de la main de l'oiseleur.

Be delivered as a roe from the hand, And as a bird from the hand of a fowler.

6 V a vers la fourmi, paresseux; Considère ses voies, et deviens sage.

Go unto the ant, O slothful one, See her ways and be wise;

7 E lle n'a ni chef, Ni inspecteur, ni maître;

Which hath not captain, overseer, and ruler,

8 E lle prépare en été sa nourriture, Elle amasse pendant la moisson de quoi manger.

She doth prepare in summer her bread, She hath gathered in harvest her food.

9 P aresseux, jusqu'à quand seras-tu couché? Quand te lèveras-tu de ton sommeil?

Till when, O slothful one, dost thou lie? When dost thou arise from thy sleep?

10 U n peu de sommeil, un peu d'assoupissement, Un peu croiser les mains pour dormir!...

A little sleep, a little slumber, A little clasping of the hands to rest,

11 E t la pauvreté te surprendra, comme un rôdeur, Et la disette, comme un homme en armes.

And thy poverty hath come as a traveller, And thy want as an armed man.

12 L 'homme pervers, l'homme inique, Marche la fausseté dans la bouche;

A man of worthlessness, a man of iniquity, Walking perverseness of mouth,

13 I l cligne des yeux, parle du pied, Fait des signes avec les doigts;

Winking with his eyes, speaking with his feet, Directing with his fingers,

14 L a perversité est dans son coeur, Il médite le mal en tout temps, Il excite des querelles.

Frowardness in his heart, devising evil at all times, Contentions he sendeth forth.

15 A ussi sa ruine arrivera-t-elle subitement; Il sera brisé tout d'un coup, et sans remède.

Therefore suddenly cometh his calamity, Instantly he is broken -- and no healing.

16 I l y a six choses que hait l'Éternel, Et même sept qu'il a en horreur;

These six hath Jehovah hated, Yea, seven abominations to His soul.

17 L es yeux hautains, la langue menteuse, Les mains qui répandent le sang innocent,

Eyes high -- tongues false -- And hands shedding innocent blood --

18 L e coeur qui médite des projets iniques, Les pieds qui se hâtent de courir au mal,

A heart devising thoughts of vanity -- Feet hasting to run to evil --

19 L e faux témoin qui dit des mensonges, Et celui qui excite des querelles entre frères.

A false witness doth breathe out lies -- And one sending forth contentions between brethren.

20 M on fils, garde les préceptes de ton père, Et ne rejette pas l'enseignement de ta mère.

Keep, my son, the command of thy father, And leave not the law of thy mother.

21 L ie-les constamment sur ton coeur, Attache-les à ton cou.

Bind them on thy heart continually, Tie them on thy neck.

22 I ls te dirigeront dans ta marche, Ils te garderont sur ta couche, Ils te parleront à ton réveil.

In thy going up and down, it leadeth thee, In thy lying down, it watcheth over thee, And thou hast awaked -- it talketh thee.

23 C ar le précepte est une lampe, et l'enseignement une lumière, Et les avertissements de la correction sont le chemin de la vie:

For a lamp the command, And the law a light, And a way of life reproofs of instruction,

24 I ls te préserveront de la femme corrompue, De la langue doucereuse de l'étrangère.

To preserve thee from an evil woman, From the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

25 N e la convoite pas dans ton coeur pour sa beauté, Et ne te laisse pas séduire par ses paupières.

Desire not her beauty in thy heart, And let her not take thee with her eyelids.

26 C ar pour la femme prostituée on se réduit à un morceau de pain, Et la femme mariée tend un piège à la vie précieuse.

For a harlot consumeth unto a cake of bread, And an adulteress the precious soul hunteth.

27 Q uelqu'un mettra-t-il du feu dans son sein, Sans que ses vêtements s'enflamment?

Doth a man take fire into his bosom, And are his garments not burnt?

28 Q uelqu'un marchera-t-il sur des charbons ardents, Sans que ses pieds soient brûlés?

Doth a man walk on the hot coals, And are his feet not scorched?

29 I l en est de même pour celui qui va vers la femme de son prochain: Quiconque la touche ne restera pas impuni.

So he who hath gone in unto the wife of his neighbour, None who doth touch her is innocent.

30 O n ne tient pas pour innocent le voleur qui dérobe Pour satisfaire son appétit, quand il a faim;

They do not despise the thief, When he stealeth to fill his soul when he is hungry,

31 S i on le trouve, il fera une restitution au septuple, Il donnera tout ce qu'il a dans sa maison.

And being found he repayeth sevenfold, All the substance of his house he giveth.

32 M ais celui qui commet un adultère avec une femme est dépourvu de sens, Celui qui veut se perdre agit de la sorte;

He who committeth adultery a woman lacketh heart, He is destroying his soul who doth it.

33 I l n'aura que plaie et ignominie, Et son opprobre ne s'effacera point.

A stroke and shame he doth find, And his reproach is not wiped away,

34 C ar la jalousie met un homme en fureur, Et il est sans pitié au jour de la vengeance;

For jealousy the fury of a man, And he doth not spare in a day of vengeance.

35 I l n'a égard à aucune rançon, Et il est inflexible, quand même tu multiplierais les dons.

He accepteth not the appearance of any atonement, Yea, he doth not consent, Though thou dost multiply bribes!
