1 J ésus partit de là, et se rendit dans sa patrie. Ses disciples le suivirent.

And he went forth thence, and came to his own country, and his disciples do follow him,

2 Q uand le sabbat fut venu, il se mit à enseigner dans la synagogue. Beaucoup de gens qui l'entendirent étaient étonnés et disaient: D'où lui viennent ces choses? Quelle est cette sagesse qui lui a été donnée, et comment de tels miracles se font-ils par ses mains?

and sabbath having come, he began in the synagogue to teach, and many hearing were astonished, saying, `Whence hath this one these things? and what the wisdom that was given to him, that also such mighty works through his hands are done?

3 N 'est-ce pas le charpentier, le fils de Marie, le frère de Jacques, de Joses, de Jude et de Simon? et ses soeurs ne sont-elles pas ici parmi nous? Et il était pour eux une occasion de chute.

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us?' -- and they were being stumbled at him.

4 M ais Jésus leur dit: Un prophète n'est méprisé que dans sa patrie, parmi ses parents, et dans sa maison.

And Jesus said to them -- `A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his kindred, and in his own house;'

5 I l ne put faire là aucun miracle, si ce n'est qu'il imposa les mains à quelques malades et les guérit.

and he was not able there any mighty work to do, except on a few infirm people having put hands he did heal;

6 E t il s'étonnait de leur incrédulité. Jésus parcourait les villages d'alentour, en enseignant.

and he wondered because of their unbelief. And he was going round the villages, in a circle, teaching,

7 A lors il appela les douze, et il commença à les envoyer deux à deux, en leur donnant pouvoir sur les esprits impurs.

and he doth call near the twelve, and he began to send them forth two by two, and he was giving them power over the unclean spirits,

8 I l leur prescrivit de ne rien prendre pour le voyage, si ce n'est un bâton; de n'avoir ni pain, ni sac, ni monnaie dans la ceinture;

and he commanded them that they may take nothing for the way, except a staff only -- no scrip, no bread, no brass in the girdle,

9 d e chausser des sandales, et de ne pas revêtir deux tuniques.

but having been shod with sandals, and ye may not put on two coats.

10 P uis il leur dit: Dans quelque maison que vous entriez, restez-y jusqu'à ce que vous partiez de ce lieu.

And he said to them, `Whenever ye may enter into a house, there remain till ye may depart thence,

11 E t, s'il y a quelque part des gens qui ne vous reçoivent ni ne vous écoutent, retirez-vous de là, et secouez la poussière de vos pieds, afin que cela leur serve de témoignage.

and as many as may not receive you, nor hear you, going out thence, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony to them; verily I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom or Gomorrah in a day of judgment than for that city.'

12 I ls partirent, et ils prêchèrent la repentance.

And having gone forth they were preaching that might reform,

13 I ls chassaient beaucoup de démons, et ils oignaient d'huile beaucoup de malades et les guérissaient.

and many demons they were casting out, and they were anointing with oil many infirm, and they were healing.

14 L e roi Hérode entendit parler de Jésus, dont le nom était devenu célèbre, et il dit: Jean Baptiste est ressuscité des morts, et c'est pour cela qu'il se fait par lui des miracles.

And the king Herod heard, (for his name became public,) and he said -- `John the Baptist out of the dead was raised, and because of this the mighty powers are working in him.'

15 D 'autres disaient: C'est Élie. Et d'autres disaient: C'est un prophète comme l'un des prophètes.

Others said -- `It is Elijah,' and others said -- `It is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.'

16 M ais Hérode, en apprenant cela, disait: Ce Jean que j'ai fait décapiter, c'est lui qui est ressuscité.

And Herod having heard, said -- `He whom I did behead -- John -- this is he; he was raised out of the dead.'

17 C ar Hérode lui-même avait fait arrêter Jean, et l'avait fait lier en prison, à cause d'Hérodias, femme de Philippe, son frère, parce qu'il l'avait épousée,

For Herod himself, having sent forth, did lay hold on John, and bound him in the prison, because of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he married her,

18 e t que Jean lui disait: Il ne t'est pas permis d'avoir la femme de ton frère.

for John said to Herod -- `It is not lawful to thee to have the wife of thy brother;'

19 H érodias était irritée contre Jean, et voulait le faire mourir.

and Herodias was having a quarrel with him, and was willing to kill him, and was not able,

20 M ais elle ne le pouvait; car Hérode craignait Jean, le connaissant pour un homme juste et saint; il le protégeait, et, après l'avoir entendu, il était souvent perplexe, et l'écoutait avec plaisir.

for Herod was fearing John, knowing him a man righteous and holy, and was keeping watch over him, and having heard him, was doing many things, and hearing him gladly.

21 C ependant, un jour propice arriva, lorsque Hérode, à l'anniversaire de sa naissance, donna un festin à ses grands, aux chefs militaires et aux principaux de la Galilée.

And a seasonable day having come, when Herod on his birthday was making a supper to his great men, and to the chiefs of thousands, and to the first men of Galilee,

22 L a fille d'Hérodias entra dans la salle; elle dansa, et plut à Hérode et à ses convives. Le roi dit à la jeune fille: Demande-moi ce que tu voudras, et je te le donnerai.

and the daughter of that Herodias having come in, and having danced, and having pleased Herod and those reclining (at meat) with him, the king said to the damsel, `Ask of me whatever thou wilt, and I will give to thee,'

23 I l ajouta avec serment: Ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, fût-ce la moitié de mon royaume.

and he sware to her -- `Whatever thou mayest ask me, I will give to thee -- unto the half of my kingdom.'

24 É tant sortie, elle dit à sa mère: Que demanderais-je? Et sa mère répondit: La tête de Jean Baptiste.

And she, having gone forth, said to her mother, `What shall I ask for myself?' and she said, `The head of John the Baptist;'

25 E lle s'empressa de rentrer aussitôt vers le roi, et lui fit cette demande: Je veux que tu me donnes à l'instant, sur un plat, la tête de Jean Baptiste.

and having come in immediately with haste unto the king, she asked, saying, `I will that thou mayest give me presently, upon a plate, the head of John the Baptist.'

26 L e roi fut attristé; mais, à cause de ses serments et des convives, il ne voulut pas lui faire un refus.

And the king -- made very sorrowful -- because of the oaths and of those reclining (at meat) with him, would not put her away,

27 I l envoya sur-le-champ un garde, avec ordre d'apporter la tête de Jean Baptiste.

and immediately the king having sent a guardsman, did command his head to be brought,

28 L e garde alla décapiter Jean dans la prison, et apporta la tête sur un plat. Il la donna à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère.

and he having gone, beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head upon a plate, and did give it to the damsel, and the damsel did give it to her mother;

29 L es disciples de Jean, ayant appris cela, vinrent prendre son corps, et le mirent dans un sépulcre.

and having heard, his disciples came and took up his corpse, and laid it in the tomb.

30 L es apôtres, s'étant rassemblés auprès de Jésus, lui racontèrent tout ce qu'ils avaient fait et tout ce qu'ils avaient enseigné.

And the apostles are gathered together unto Jesus, and they told him all, and how many things they did, and how many things they taught,

31 J ésus leur dit: Venez à l'écart dans un lieu désert, et reposez-vous un peu. Car il y avait beaucoup d'allants et de venants, et ils n'avaient même pas le temps de manger.

and he said to them, `Come ye yourselves apart to a desert place, and rest a little,' for those coming and those going were many, and not even to eat had they opportunity,

32 I ls partirent donc dans une barque, pour aller à l'écart dans un lieu désert.

and they went away to a desert place, in the boat, by themselves.

33 B eaucoup de gens les virent s'en aller et les reconnurent, et de toutes les villes on accourut à pied et on les devança au lieu où ils se rendaient.

And the multitudes saw them going away, and many recognised him, and by land from all the cities they ran thither, and went before them, and came together to him,

34 Q uand il sortit de la barque, Jésus vit une grande foule, et fut ému de compassion pour eux, parce qu'ils étaient comme des brebis qui n'ont point de berger; et il se mit à leur enseigner beaucoup de choses.

and having come forth, Jesus saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion on them, that they were as sheep not having a shepherd, and he began to teach many things.

35 C omme l'heure était déjà avancée, ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui, et dirent: Ce lieu est désert, et l'heure est déjà avancée;

And now the hour being advanced, his disciples having come near to him, say, -- `The place is desolate, and the hour is now advanced,

36 r envoie-les, afin qu'ils aillent dans les campagnes et dans les villages des environs, pour s'acheter de quoi manger.

let them away, that, having gone away to the surrounding fields and villages, they may buy to themselves loaves, for what they may eat they have not.'

37 J ésus leur répondit: Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. Mais ils lui dirent: Irions-nous acheter des pains pour deux cents deniers, et leur donnerions-nous à manger?

And he answering said to them, `Give ye them to eat,' and they say to him, `Having gone away, may we buy two hundred denaries' worth of loaves, and give to them to eat?'

38 E t il leur dit: Combien avez-vous de pains? Allez voir. Ils s'en assurèrent, et répondirent: Cinq, et deux poissons.

And he saith to them, `How many loaves have ye? go and see;' and having known, they say, `Five, and two fishes.'

39 A lors il leur commanda de les faire tous asseoir par groupes sur l'herbe verte,

And he commanded them to make all recline in companies upon the green grass,

40 e t ils s'assirent par rangées de cent et de cinquante.

and they sat down in squares, by hundreds, and by fifties.

41 I l prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons et, levant les yeux vers le ciel, il rendit grâces. Puis, il rompit les pains, et les donna aux disciples, afin qu'ils les distribuassent à la foule. Il partagea aussi les deux poissons entre tous.

And having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the heaven, he blessed, and brake the loaves, and was giving to his disciples, that they may set before them, and the two fishes divided he to all,

42 T ous mangèrent et furent rassasiés,

and they did all eat, and were filled,

43 e t l'on emporta douze paniers pleins de morceaux de pain et de ce qui restait des poissons.

and they took up of broken pieces twelve hand-baskets full, and of the fishes,

44 C eux qui avaient mangé les pains étaient cinq mille hommes.

and those eating of the loaves were about five thousand men.

45 A ussitôt après, il obligea ses disciples à monter dans la barque et à passer avant lui de l'autre côté, vers Bethsaïda, pendant que lui-même renverrait la foule.

And immediately he constrained his disciples to go into the boat, and to go before to the other side, unto Bethsaida, till he may let the multitude away,

46 Q uand il l'eut renvoyée, il s'en alla sur la montagne, pour prier.

and having taken leave of them, he went away to the mountain to pray.

47 L e soir étant venu, la barque était au milieu de la mer, et Jésus était seul à terre.

And evening having come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he alone upon the land;

48 I l vit qu'ils avaient beaucoup de peine à ramer; car le vent leur était contraire. A la quatrième veille de la nuit environ, il alla vers eux, marchant sur la mer, et il voulait les dépasser.

and he saw them harassed in the rowing, for the wind was against them, and about the fourth watch of the night he doth come to them walking on the sea, and wished to pass by them.

49 Q uand ils le virent marcher sur la mer, ils crurent que c'étaient un fantôme, et ils poussèrent des cris;

And they having seen him walking on the sea, thought to be an apparition, and cried out,

50 c ar ils le voyaient tous, et ils étaient troublés. Aussitôt Jésus leur parla, et leur dit: Rassurez-vous, c'est moi, n'ayez pas peur!

for they all saw him, and were troubled, and immediately he spake with them, and saith to them, `Take courage, I am, be not afraid.'

51 P uis il monta vers eux dans la barque, et le vent cessa. Ils furent en eux-même tout stupéfaits et remplis d'étonnement;

And he went up unto them to the boat, and the wind lulled, and greatly out of measure were they amazed in themselves, and were wondering,

52 c ar ils n'avaient pas compris le miracle des pains, parce que leur coeur était endurci.

for they understood not concerning the loaves, for their heart hath been hard.

53 A près avoir traversé la mer, ils vinrent dans le pays de Génésareth, et ils abordèrent.

And having passed over, they came upon the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore,

54 Q uand ils furent sortis de la barque, les gens, ayant aussitôt reconnu Jésus,

and they having come forth out of the boat, immediately having recognised him,

55 p arcoururent tous les environs, et l'on se mit à apporter les malades sur des lits, partout où l'on apprenait qu'il était.

having run about through all that region round about, they began upon the couches to carry about those ill, where they were hearing that he is,

56 E n quelque lieu qu'il arrivât, dans les villages, dans les villes ou dans les campagnes, on mettait les malades sur les places publiques, et on le priait de leur permettre seulement de toucher le bord de son vêtement. Et tous ceux qui le touchaient étaient guéris.

and wherever he was going, to villages, or cities, or fields, in the market-places they were laying the infirm, and were calling upon him, that they may touch if it were but the fringe of his garment, and as many as were touching him were saved.
