1 U n homme de la maison de Lévi avait pris pour femme une fille de Lévi.

And there goeth a man of the house of Levi, and he taketh the daughter of Levi,

2 C ette femme devint enceinte et enfanta un fils. Elle vit qu'il était beau, et elle le cacha pendant trois mois.

and the woman conceiveth, and beareth a son, and she seeth him that he fair, and she hideth him three months,

3 N e pouvant plus le cacher, elle prit une caisse de jonc, qu'elle enduisit de bitume et de poix; elle y mit l'enfant, et le déposa parmi les roseaux, sur le bord du fleuve.

and she hath not been able any more to hide him, and she taketh for him an ark of rushes, and daubeth it with bitumen and with pitch, and putteth the lad in it, and putteth in the weeds by the edge of the River;

4 L a soeur de l'enfant se tint à quelque distance, pour savoir ce qui lui arriverait.

and his sister stationeth herself afar off, to know what is done to him.

5 L a fille de Pharaon descendit au fleuve pour se baigner, et ses compagnes se promenèrent le long du fleuve. Elle aperçut la caisse au milieu des roseaux, et elle envoya sa servante pour la prendre.

And a daughter of Pharaoh cometh down to bathe at the River, and her damsels are walking by the side of the River, and she seeth the ark in the midst of the weeds, and sendeth her handmaid, and she taketh it,

6 E lle l'ouvrit, et vit l'enfant: c'était un petit garçon qui pleurait. Elle en eut pitié, et elle dit: C'est un enfant des Hébreux!

and openeth, and seeth him -- the lad, and lo, a child weeping! and she hath pity on him, and saith, `This is of the Hebrews' children.'

7 A lors la soeur de l'enfant dit à la fille de Pharaon: Veux-tu que j'aille te chercher une nourrice parmi les femmes des Hébreux, pour allaiter cet enfant?

And his sister saith unto the daughter of Pharaoh, `Do I go? when I have called for thee a suckling woman of the Hebrews, then she doth suckle the lad for thee;'

8 V a, lui répondit la fille de Pharaon. Et la jeune fille alla chercher la mère de l'enfant.

and the daughter of Pharaoh saith to her, `Go;' and the virgin goeth, and calleth the mother of the lad,

9 L a fille de Pharaon lui dit: Emporte cet enfant, et allaite-le-moi; je te donnerai ton salaire. La femme prit l'enfant, et l'allaita.

and the daughter of Pharaoh saith to her, `Take this lad away, and suckle him for me, and I -- I give thy hire;' and the woman taketh the lad, and suckleth him.

10 Q uand il eut grandi, elle l'amena à la fille de Pharaon, et il fut pour elle comme un fils. Elle lui donna le nom de Moïse, car, dit-elle, je l'ai retiré des eaux.

And the lad groweth, and she bringeth him in to the daughter of Pharaoh, and he is to her for a son, and she calleth his name Moses, and saith, `Because -- from the water I have drawn him.'

11 E n ce temps-là, Moïse, devenu grand, se rendit vers ses frères, et fut témoin de leurs pénibles travaux. Il vit un Égyptien qui frappait un Hébreu d'entre ses frères.

And it cometh to pass, in those days, that Moses is grown, and he goeth out unto his brethren, and looketh on their burdens, and seeth a man, an Egyptian, smiting a man, a Hebrew, of his brethren,

12 I l regarda de côté et d'autre, et, voyant qu'il n'y avait personne, il tua l'Égyptien, et le cacha dans le sable.

and he turneth hither and thither, and seeth that there is no man, and smiteth the Egyptian, and hideth him in the sand.

13 I l sortit le jour suivant; et voici, deux Hébreux se querellaient. Il dit à celui qui avait tort: Pourquoi frappes-tu ton prochain?

And he goeth out on the second day, and lo, two men, Hebrews, striving! and he saith to the wrong-doer, `Why dost thou smite thy neighbour?'

14 E t cet homme répondit: Qui t'a établi chef et juge sur nous? Penses-tu me tuer, comme tu as tué l'Égyptien? Moïse eut peur, et dit: Certainement la chose est connue.

and he saith, `Who set thee for a head and a judge over us? to slay me art thou saying, as thou hast slain the Egyptian?' and Moses feareth, and saith, `Surely the thing hath been known.'

15 P haraon apprit ce qui s'était passé, et il cherchait à faire mourir Moïse. Mais Moïse s'enfuit de devant Pharaon, et il se retira dans le pays de Madian, où il s'arrêta près d'un puits.

And Pharaoh heareth of this thing, and seeketh to slay Moses, and Moses fleeth from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelleth in the land of Midian, and dwelleth by the well.

16 L e sacrificateur de Madian avait sept filles. Elle vinrent puiser de l'eau, et elles remplirent les auges pour abreuver le troupeau de leur père.

And to a priest of Midian seven daughters, and they come and draw, and fill the troughs, to water the flock of their father,

17 L es bergers arrivèrent, et les chassèrent. Alors Moïse se leva, prit leur défense, et fit boire leur troupeau.

and the shepherds come and drive them away, and Moses ariseth, and saveth them, and watereth their flock.

18 Q uand elles furent de retour auprès de Réuel, leur père, il dit: Pourquoi revenez-vous si tôt aujourd'hui?

And they come in to Reuel their father, and he saith, `Wherefore have ye hastened to come in to-day?'

19 E lles répondirent: Un Égyptien nous a délivrées de la main des bergers, et même il nous a puisé de l'eau, et a fait boire le troupeau.

and they say, `A man, an Egyptian, hath delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also hath diligently drawn for us, and watereth the flock;'

20 E t il dit à ses filles: Où est-il? Pourquoi avez-vous laissé cet homme? Appelez-le, pour qu'il prenne quelque nourriture.

and he saith unto his daughters, `And where he? why this? -- ye left the man! call for him, and he doth eat bread.'

21 M oïse se décida à demeurer chez cet homme, qui lui donna pour femme Séphora, sa fille.

And Moses is willing to dwell with the man, and he giveth Zipporah his daughter to Moses,

22 E lle enfanta un fils, qu'il appela du nom de Guerschom, car, dit-il, j'habite un pays étranger.

and she beareth a son, and he calleth his name Gershom, for he said, `A sojourner I have been in a strange land.'

23 L ongtemps après, le roi d'Égypte mourut, et les enfants d'Israël gémissaient encore sous la servitude, et poussaient des cris. Ces cris, que leur arrachait la servitude, montèrent jusqu'à Dieu.

And it cometh to pass during these many days, that the king of Egypt dieth, and the sons of Israel sigh because of the service, and cry, and their cry goeth up unto God, because of the service;

24 D ieu entendit leurs gémissements, et se souvint de son alliance avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.

and God heareth their groaning, and God remembereth His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob;

25 D ieu regarda les enfants d'Israël, et il en eut compassion.

and God seeth the sons of Israel, and God knoweth.
