1 A bimélec, fils de Jerubbaal, se rendit à Sichem vers les frères de sa mère, et voici comment il leur parla, ainsi qu'à toute la famille de la maison du père de sa mère:

and Abimelech son of Jerubbaal goeth to Shechem, unto his mother's brethren, and speaketh unto them, and unto all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,

2 D ites, je vous prie, aux oreilles de tous les habitants de Sichem: Vaut-il mieux pour vous que soixante-dix hommes, tous fils de Jerubbaal, dominent sur vous, ou qu'un seul homme domine sur vous? Et souvenez-vous que je suis votre os et votre chair.

`Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, Which good for you -- the ruling over you of seventy men (all the sons of Jerubbaal), or the ruling over you of one man? -- and ye have remembered that I your bone and your flesh.'

3 L es frères de sa mère répétèrent pour lui toutes ces paroles aux oreilles de tous les habitants de Sichem, et leur coeur inclina en faveur d'Abimélec, car ils se disaient: C'est notre frère.

And his mother's brethren speak concerning him, in the ears of all the masters of Shechem, all these words, and their heart inclineth after Abimelech, for they said, `He our brother;'

4 I ls lui donnèrent soixante-dix sicles d'argent, qu'ils enlevèrent de la maison de Baal Berith. Abimélec s'en servit pour acheter des misérables et des turbulents, qui allèrent après lui.

and they give to him seventy silverings out of the house of Baal-Berith, and Abimelech hireth with them men, vain and unstable, and they go after him;

5 I l vint dans la maison de son père à Ophra, et il tua ses frères, fils de Jerubbaal, soixante-dix hommes, sur une même pierre. Il n'échappa que Jotham, le plus jeune fils de Jerubbaal, car il s'était caché.

and he goeth into the house of his father at Ophrah, and slayeth his brethren, sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone; and Jotham, youngest son of Jerubbaal, is left, for he was hidden.

6 T ous les habitants de Sichem et toute la maison de Millo se rassemblèrent; ils vinrent, et proclamèrent roi Abimélec, près du chêne planté dans Sichem.

And all the masters of Shechem are gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and come and cause Abimelech to reign for king at the oak of the camp which in Shechem;

7 J otham en fut informé. Il alla se placer sur le sommet de la montagne de Garizim, et voici ce qu'il leur cria à haute voix: Écoutez-moi, habitants de Sichem, et que Dieu vous écoute!

and they declare to Jotham, and he goeth and standeth on the top of mount Gerizim, and lifteth up his voice, and calleth, and saith to them, `Hearken unto me, O masters of Shechem, and God doth hearken unto you:

8 L es arbres partirent pour aller oindre un roi et le mettre à leur tête. Ils dirent à l'olivier: Règne sur nous.

`The trees have diligently gone to anoint over them a king, and they say to the olive, Reign thou over us.

9 M ais l'olivier leur répondit: Renoncerais-je à mon huile, qui m'assure les hommages de Dieu et des hommes, pour aller planer sur les arbres?

And the olive saith to them, Have I ceased from my fatness, by which they honour gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

10 E t les arbres dirent au figuier: Viens, toi, règne sur nous.

And the trees say to the fig, Come thou, reign over us.

11 M ais le figuier leur répondit: Renoncerais-je à ma douceur et à mon excellent fruit, pour aller planer sur les arbres?

And the fig saith to them, Have I ceased from my sweetness, and my good increase, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

12 E t les arbres dirent à la vigne: Viens, toi, règne sur nous.

`And the trees say to the vine, Come thou, reign over us.

13 M ais la vigne leur répondit: Renoncerais-je à mon vin, qui réjouit Dieu et les hommes, pour aller planer sur les arbres?

And the vine saith to them, Have I ceased from my new wine, which is rejoicing gods and men, that I have gone to stagger over the trees?

14 A lors tous les arbres dirent au buisson d'épines: Viens, toi, règne sur nous.

And all the trees say unto the bramble, Come thou, reign over us.

15 E t le buisson d'épines répondit aux arbres: Si c'est de bonne foi que vous voulez m'oindre pour votre roi, venez, réfugiez-vous sous mon ombrage; sinon, un feu sortira du buisson d'épines, et dévorera les cèdres du Liban.

And the bramble saith unto the trees, If in truth ye are anointing me for king over you, come, take refuge in my shadow; and if not -- fire cometh out from the bramble, and devoureth the cedars of Lebanon.

16 M aintenant, est-ce de bonne foi et avec intégrité que vous avez agi en proclamant roi Abimélec? avez-vous eu de la bienveillance pour Jerubbaal et sa maison? l'avez-vous traité selon les services qu'il a rendus? -

`And, now, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted, when ye make Abimelech king; and if ye have done good with Jerubbaal, and with his house; and if according to the deed of his hands ye have done to him --

17 C ar mon père a combattu pour vous, il a exposé sa vie, et il vous a délivrés de la main de Madian;

because my father hath fought for you, and doth cast away his life from, and deliver you from the hand of Midian;

18 e t vous, vous vous êtes levés contre la maison de mon père, vous avez tué ses fils, soixante-dix hommes, sur une même pierre, et vous avez proclamé roi sur les habitants de Sichem, Abimélec, fils de sa servante, parce qu'il est votre frère. -

and ye have risen against the house of my father to-day, and slay his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and cause Abimelech son of his handmaid to reign over the masters of Shechem, because he your brother --

19 S i c'est de bonne foi et avec intégrité qu'en ce jour vous avez agi envers Jerubbaal et sa maison, eh bien! qu'Abimélec fasse votre joie, et que vous fassiez aussi la sienne!

yea, if in truth and in sincerity ye have acted with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, rejoice ye in Abimelech, and he doth rejoice -- even he -- in you;

20 S inon, qu'un feu sorte d'Abimélec et dévore les habitants de Sichem et la maison de Millo, et qu'un feu sorte des habitants de Sichem et de la maison de Millo et dévore Abimélec!

and if not -- fire cometh out from Abimelech and devoureth the masters of Shechem and the house of Millo, and fire cometh out from the masters of Shechem and from the house of Millo, and devoureth Abimelech.'

21 J otham se retira et prit la fuite; il s'en alla à Beer, où il demeura loin d'Abimélec, son frère.

And Jotham hasteth, and fleeth, and goeth to Beer, and dwelleth there, from the face of Abimelech his brother.

22 A bimélec avait dominé trois ans sur Israël.

And Abimelech is prince over Israel three years,

23 A lors Dieu envoya un mauvais esprit entre Abimélec et les habitants de Sichem, et les habitants de Sichem furent infidèles à Abimélec,

and God sendeth an evil spirit between Abimelech and the masters of Shechem, and the masters of Shechem deal treacherously with Abimelech,

24 a fin que la violence commise sur les soixante-dix fils de Jerubbaal reçût son châtiment, et que leur sang retombât sur Abimélec, leur frère, qui les avait tués, et sur les habitants de Sichem, qui l'avaient aidé à tuer ses frères.

for the coming in of the violence the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, and of their blood to place on Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and on the masters of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brethren.

25 L es habitants de Sichem placèrent en embuscade contre lui, sur les sommets des montagnes, des gens qui dépouillaient tous ceux qui passaient près d'eux sur le chemin. Et cela fut rapporté à Abimélec.

And the masters of Shechem set for him ambushes on the top of the hills, and rob every one who passeth over by them in the way, and it is declared to Abimelech.

26 G aal, fils d'Ébed, vint avec ses frères, et ils passèrent à Sichem. Les habitants de Sichem eurent confiance en lui.

And Gaal son of Ebed cometh -- also his brethren -- and they pass over into Shechem, and the masters of Shechem trust in him,

27 I ls sortirent dans la campagne, vendangèrent leurs vignes, foulèrent les raisins, et se livrèrent à des réjouissances; ils entrèrent dans la maison de leur dieu, ils mangèrent et burent, et ils maudirent Abimélec.

and go out into the field, and gather their vineyards, and tread, and make praises, and go into the house of their god, and eat and drink, and revile Abimelech.

28 E t Gaal, fils d'Ébed, disait: Qui est Abimélec, et qu'est Sichem, pour que nous servions Abimélec? N'est-il pas fils de Jerubbaal, et Zebul n'est-il pas son commissaire? Servez les hommes de Hamor, père de Sichem; mais nous, pourquoi servirions-nous Abimélec?

And Gaal son of Ebed saith, `Who Abimelech, and who Shechem, that we serve him? is not son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his commander? Serve ye the men of Hamor father of Shechem, and wherefore do we serve him -- we?

29 O h! si j'étais le maître de ce peuple, je renverserais Abimélec. Et il disait d'Abimélec: Renforce ton armée, mets-toi en marche!

and oh that this people were in my hand -- then I turn Abimelech aside;' and he saith to Abimelech, `Increase thy host, and come out.'

30 Z ebul, gouverneur de la ville, apprit ce que disait Gaal, fils d'Ébed, et sa colère s'enflamma.

And Zebul, prince of the city, heareth the words of Gaal son of Ebed, and his anger burneth,

31 I l envoya secrètement des messagers à Abimélec, pour lui dire: Voici, Gaal, fils d'Ébed, et ses frères, sont venus à Sichem, et ils soulèvent la ville contre toi.

and he sendeth messengers unto Abimelech deceitfully, saying, `Lo, Gaal son of Ebed and his brethren are coming into Shechem, and lo, they are fortifying the city against thee;

32 M aintenant, pars de nuit, toi et le peuple qui est avec toi, et mets-toi en embuscade dans la campagne.

and, now, rise by night, thou and the people who with thee, and lay wait in the field,

33 L e matin, au lever du soleil, tu fondras avec impétuosité sur la ville. Et lorsque Gaal et le peuple qui est avec lui sortiront contre toi, tu lui feras ce que tes forces permettront.

and it hath been, in the morning, about the rising of the sun, thou dost rise early, and hast pushed against the city; and lo, he and the people who with him are going out unto thee -- and thou hast done to him as thy hand doth find.'

34 A bimélec et tout le peuple qui était avec lui partirent de nuit, et ils se mirent en embuscade près de Sichem, divisés en quatre corps.

And Abimelech riseth, and all the people who with him, by night, and they lay wait against Shechem -- four detachments;

35 G aal, fils d'Ébed, sortit, et il se tint à l'entrée de la porte de la ville. Abimélec et tout le peuple qui était avec lui se levèrent alors de l'embuscade.

and Gaal son of Ebed goeth out, and standeth at the opening of the gate of the city, and Abimelech riseth -- also the people who with him -- from the ambush,

36 G aal aperçut le peuple, et il dit à Zebul: Voici un peuple qui descend du sommet des montagnes. Zebul lui répondit: C'est l'ombre des montagnes que tu prends pour des hommes.

and Gaal seeth the people, and saith unto Zebul, `Lo, people are coming down from the top of the hills;' and Zebul saith unto him, `The shadow of the hills thou art seeing like men.'

37 G aal, reprenant la parole, dit: C'est bien un peuple qui descend des hauteurs du pays, et une troupe arrive par le chemin du chêne des devins.

And Gaal addeth yet to speak, and saith, `Lo, people are coming down from the high part of the land, and another detachment is coming by the way of the oak of Meonenim.'

38 Z ebul lui répondit: Où donc est ta bouche, toi qui disais: Qui est Abimélec, pour que nous le servions? N'est-ce point là le peuple que tu méprisais? Marche maintenant, livre-lui bataille!

And Zebul saith unto him, `Where now thy mouth, in that thou sayest, Who Abimelech that we serve him? is not this the people against which thou hast kicked? go out, I pray thee now, and fight against it.'

39 G aal s'avança à la tête des habitants de Sichem, et livra bataille à Abimélec.

And Gaal goeth out before the masters of Shechem, and fighteth against Abimelech,

40 P oursuivi par Abimélec, il prit la fuite devant lui, et beaucoup d'hommes tombèrent morts jusqu'à l'entrée de la porte.

and Abimelech pursueth him, and he fleeth from his presence, and many fall wounded -- unto the opening of the gate.

41 A bimélec s'arrêta à Aruma. Et Zebul chassa Gaal et ses frères, qui ne purent rester à Sichem.

And Abimelech abideth in Arumah, and Zebul casteth out Gaal and his brethren from dwelling in Shechem.

42 L e lendemain, le peuple sortit dans la campagne. Abimélec, qui en fut informé,

And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that the people go out to the field, and they declare to Abimelech,

43 p rit sa troupe, la partagea en trois corps, et se mit en embuscade dans la campagne. Ayant vu que le peuple sortait de la ville, il se leva contre eux, et les battit.

and he taketh the people, and divideth them into three detachments, and layeth wait in a field, and looketh, and lo, the people are coming out from the city, and he riseth against them, and smiteth them.

44 A bimélec et les corps qui étaient avec lui se portèrent en avant, et se placèrent à l'entrée de la porte de la ville; deux de ces corps se jetèrent sur tous ceux qui étaient dans la campagne, et les battirent.

And Abimelech and the detachments who with him have pushed on, and stand at the opening of the gate of the city, and the two detachments have pushed against all who are in the field, and smite them,

45 A bimélec attaqua la ville pendant toute la journée; il s'en empara, et tua le peuple qui s'y trouvait. Puis il rasa la ville, et y sema du sel.

and Abimelech hath fought against the city all that day, and captureth the city, and the people who in it he hath slain, and he breaketh down the city, and soweth it salt.

46 A cette nouvelle, tous les habitants de la tour de Sichem se rendirent dans la forteresse de la maison du dieu Berith.

And all the masters of the tower of Shechem hear, and go in unto the high place of the house of the god Berith,

47 O n avertit Abimélec que tous les habitants de la tour de Sichem s'y étaient rassemblés.

and it is declared to Abimelech that all the masters of the tower of Shechem have gathered themselves together,

48 A lors Abimélec monta sur la montagne de Tsalmon, lui et tout le peuple qui était avec lui. Il prit en main une hache, coupa une branche d'arbre, l'enleva et la mit sur son épaule. Ensuite il dit au peuple qui était avec lui: Vous avez vu ce que j'ai fait, hâtez-vous de faire comme moi.

and Abimelech goeth up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people who with him, and Abimelech taketh the great axe in his hand, and cutteth off a bough of the trees, and lifteth it up, and setteth on his shoulder, and saith unto the people who with him, `What ye have seen I have done -- haste, do ye like it.'

49 E t ils coupèrent chacun une branche, et suivirent Abimélec; ils placèrent les branches contre la forteresse, et l'incendièrent avec ceux qui y étaient. Ainsi périrent tous les gens de la tour de Sichem, au nombre d'environ mille, hommes et femmes.

And all the people also cut down each one his bough, and go after Abimelech, and set at the high place, and burn by these the high place with fire, and also all the men of the tower of Shechem die, about a thousand men and women.

50 A bimélec marcha contre Thébets. Il assiégea Thébets, et s'en empara.

And Abimelech goeth unto Thebez, and encampeth against Thebez, and captureth it,

51 I l y avait au milieu de la ville une forte tour, où se réfugièrent tous les habitants de la ville, hommes et femmes; ils fermèrent sur eux, et montèrent sur le toit de la tour.

and a strong tower hath been in the midst of the city, and thither flee do all the men and the women, and all the masters of the city, and they shut behind them, and go up on the roof of the tower.

52 A bimélec parvint jusqu'à la tour; il l'attaqua, et s'approcha de la porte pour y mettre le feu.

And Abimelech cometh unto the tower, and fighteth against it, and draweth nigh unto the opening of the tower to burn it with fire,

53 A lors une femme lança sur la tête d'Abimélec un morceau de meule de moulin, et lui brisa le crâne.

and a certain woman doth cast a piece of a rider on the head of Abimelech, and breaketh his skull,

54 A ussitôt il appela le jeune homme qui portait ses armes, et lui dit: Tire ton épée, et donne-moi la mort, de peur qu'on ne dise de moi: C'est une femme qui l'a tué. Le jeune homme le perça, et il mourut.

and he calleth hastily unto the young man bearing his weapons, and saith to him, `Draw thy sword, and thou hast put me to death, lest they say of me -- A woman slew him;' and his young man pierced him through, and he dieth.

55 Q uand les hommes d'Israël virent qu'Abimélec était mort, ils s'en allèrent chacun chez soi.

And the men of Israel see that Abimelech dead, and go each one to his place;

56 A insi Dieu fit retomber sur Abimélec le mal qu'il avait fait à son père, en tuant ses soixante-dix frères,

and God turneth back the evil of Abimelech which he did to his father to slay his seventy brethren;

57 e t Dieu fit retomber sur la tête des gens de Sichem tout le mal qu'ils avaient fait. Ainsi s'accomplit sur eux la malédiction de Jotham, fils de Jerubbaal.

and all the evil of the men of Shechem hath God turned back on their head, and come unto them doth the cursing of Jotham son of Jerubbaal.
