1 U ne bonne réputation vaut mieux que le bon parfum, et le jour de la mort que le jour de la naissance.

Better a name than good perfume, And the day of death than the day of birth.

2 M ieux vaut aller dans une maison de deuil que d'aller dans une maison de festin; car c'est là la fin de tout homme, et celui qui vit prend la chose à coeur.

Better to go unto a house of mourning, Than to go unto a house of banqueting, For that is the end of all men, And the living layeth unto his heart.

3 M ieux vaut le chagrin que le rire; car avec un visage triste le coeur peut être content.

Better sorrow than laughter, For by the sadness of the face the heart becometh better.

4 L e coeur des sages est dans la maison de deuil, et le coeur des insensés dans la maison de joie.

The heart of the wise in a house of mourning, And the heart of fools in a house of mirth.

5 M ieux vaut entendre la réprimande du sage que d'entendre le chant des insensés.

Better to hear a rebuke of a wise man, Than a man to hear a song of fools,

6 C ar comme le bruit des épines sous la chaudière, ainsi est le rire des insensés. C'est encore là une vanité.

For as the noise of thorns under the pot, So the laughter of a fool, even this vanity.

7 L 'oppression rend insensé le sage, et les présents corrompent le coeur.

Surely oppression maketh the wise mad, And a gift destroyeth the heart.

8 M ieux vaut la fin d'une chose que son commencement; mieux vaut un esprit patient qu'un esprit hautain.

Better the latter end of a thing than its beginning, Better the patient of spirit, than the haughty of spirit.

9 N e te hâte pas en ton esprit de t'irriter, car l'irritation repose dans le sein des insensés.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry, For anger in the bosom of fools resteth.

10 N e dis pas: D'où vient que les jours passés étaient meilleurs que ceux ci? Car ce n'est point par sagesse que tu demandes cela.

Say not thou, `What was it, That the former days were better than these?' For thou hast not asked wisely of this.

11 L a sagesse vaut autant qu'un héritage, et même plus pour ceux qui voient le soleil.

Wisdom good with an inheritance, And an advantage to those beholding the sun.

12 C ar à l'ombre de la sagesse on est abrité comme à l'ombre de l'argent; mais un avantage de la science, c'est que la sagesse fait vivre ceux qui la possèdent.

For wisdom a defense, money a defence, And the advantage of the knowledge of wisdom, She reviveth her possessors.

13 R egarde l'oeuvre de Dieu: qui pourra redresser ce qu'il a courbé?

See the work of God, For who is able to make straight that which He made crooked?

14 A u jour du bonheur, sois heureux, et au jour du malheur, réfléchis: Dieu a fait l'un comme l'autre, afin que l'homme ne découvre en rien ce qui sera après lui.

In a day of prosperity be in gladness, And in a day of evil consider. Also this over-against that hath God made, To the intent that man doth not find anything after him.

15 J 'ai vu tout cela pendant les jours de ma vanité. Il y a tel juste qui périt dans sa justice, et il y a tel méchant qui prolonge son existence dans sa méchanceté.

The whole I have considered in the days of my vanity. There is a righteous one perishing in his righteousness, and there is a wrong-doer prolonging in his wrong.

16 N e sois pas juste à l'excès, et ne te montre pas trop sage: pourquoi te détruirais-tu?

Be not over-righteous, nor show thyself too wise, why art thou desolate?

17 N e sois pas méchant à l'excès, et ne sois pas insensé: pourquoi mourrais-tu avant ton temps?

Do not much wrong, neither be thou a fool, why dost thou die within thy time?

18 I l est bon que tu retiennes ceci, et que tu ne négliges point cela; car celui qui craint Dieu échappe à toutes ces choses.

good that thou dost lay hold on this, and also, from that withdrawest not thy hand, for whoso is fearing God goeth out with them all.

19 L a sagesse rend le sage plus fort que dix chefs qui sont dans une ville.

The wisdom giveth strength to a wise man, more than wealth the rulers who have been in a city.

20 N on, il n'y a sur la terre point d'homme juste qui fasse le bien et qui ne pèche jamais.

Because there is not a righteous man on earth that doth good and sinneth not.

21 N e fais donc pas attention à toutes les paroles qu'on dit, de peur que tu n'entendes ton serviteur te maudire;

Also to all the words that they speak give not thy heart, that thou hear not thy servant reviling thee.

22 c ar ton coeur a senti bien des fois que tu as toi-même maudit les autres.

For many times also hath thy heart known that thou thyself also hast reviled others.

23 J 'ai éprouvé tout cela par la sagesse. J'ai dit: Je serai sage. Et la sagesse est restée loin de moi.

All this I have tried by wisdom; I have said, `I am wise,' and it far from me.

24 C e qui est loin, ce qui est profond, profond, qui peut l'atteindre?

Far off that which hath been, and deep, deep, who doth find it?

25 J e me suis appliqué dans mon coeur à connaître, à sonder, et à chercher la sagesse et la raison des choses, et à connaître la folie de la méchanceté et la stupidité de la sottise.

I have turned round, also my heart, to know and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and reason, and to know the wrong of folly, and of foolishness the madness.

26 E t j'ai trouvé plus amère que la mort la femme dont le coeur est un piège et un filet, et dont les mains sont des liens; celui qui est agréable à Dieu lui échappe, mais le pécheur est pris par elle.

And I am finding more bitter than death, the woman whose heart nets and snares, her hands bands; the good before God escapeth from her, but the sinner is captured by her.

27 V oici ce que j'ai trouvé, dit l'Ecclésiaste, en examinant les choses une à une pour en saisir la raison;

See, this I have found, said the Preacher, one to one, to find out the reason

28 v oici ce que mon âme cherche encore, et que je n'ai point trouvé. J'ai trouvé un homme entre mille; mais je n'ai pas trouvé une femme entre elles toutes.

(that still my soul had sought, and I had not found), One man, a teacher, I have found, and a woman among all these I have not found.

29 S eulement, voici ce que j'ai trouvé, c'est que Dieu a fait les hommes droits; mais ils ont cherché beaucoup de détours.

See, this alone I have found, that God made man upright, and they -- they have sought out many devices.
