1 I l arriva, du temps d'Achaz, fils de Jotham, fils d'Ozias, roi de Juda, que Retsin, roi de Syrie, monta avec Pékach, fils de Remalia, roi d'Israël, contre Jérusalem, pour l'assiéger; mais il ne put l'assiéger.

And it cometh to pass in the days of Ahaz, son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, gone up hath Rezin king of Aram, and Pekah, son of Remaliah, king of Israel, to Jerusalem, to battle against it, and he is not able to fight against it.

2 O n vint dire à la maison de David: Les Syriens sont campés en Éphraïm. Et le coeur d'Achaz et le coeur de son peuple furent agités, comme les arbres de la forêt sont agités par le vent.

And it is declared to the house of David, saying, `Aram hath been led towards Ephraim,' And his heart and the heart of his people is moved, like the moving of trees of a forest by the presence of wind.

3 A lors l'Éternel dit à Ésaïe: Va à la rencontre d'Achaz, toi et Schear Jaschub, ton fils, vers l'extrémité de l'aqueduc de l'étang supérieur, sur la route du champ du foulon.

And Jehovah saith unto Isaiah, `Go forth, I pray thee, to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shear-Jashub thy son, unto the end of the conduit of the upper pool, unto the highway of the fuller's field,

4 E t dis-lui: Sois tranquille, ne crains rien, Et que ton coeur ne s'alarme pas, Devant ces deux bouts de tisons fumants, Devant la colère de Retsin et de la Syrie, et du fils de Remalia,

and thou hast said unto him: `Take heed, and be quiet, fear not, And let not thy heart be timid, Because of these two tails of smoking brands, For the fierceness of the anger of Rezin and Aram, And the son of Remaliah.

5 D e ce que la Syrie médite du mal contre toi, De ce qu'Éphraïm et le fils de Remalia disent:

Because that Aram counselled against thee evil, Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, saying:

6 M ontons contre Juda, assiégeons la ville, Et battons-la en brèche, Et proclamons-y pour roi le fils de Tabeel.

We go up into Judah, and we vex it, And we rend it unto ourselves, And we cause a king to reign in its midst -- The son of Tabeal.

7 A insi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel: Cela n'arrivera pas, cela n'aura pas lieu.

Thus said the Lord Jehovah: It doth not stand, nor shall it be!

8 C ar Damas est la tête de la Syrie, Et Retsin est la tête de Damas. (Encore soixante-cinq ans, Éphraïm ne sera plus un peuple.)

For the head of Aram Damascus, And the head of Damascus Rezin, And within sixty and five years Is Ephraim broken from a people.

9 L a Samarie est la tête d'Éphraïm, Et le fils de Remalia est la tête de la Samarie. Si vous ne croyez pas, Vous ne subsisterez pas.

And the head of Ephraim Samaria, And the head of Samaria the son of Remaliah. If ye do not give credence, Surely ye are not stedfast.'

10 L 'Éternel parla de nouveau à Achaz, et lui dit:

And Jehovah addeth to speak unto Ahaz, saying:

11 D emande en ta faveur un signe à l'Éternel, ton Dieu; demande-le, soit dans les lieux bas, soit dans les lieux élevés.

`Ask for thee a sign from Jehovah thy God, Make deep the request, or make high upwards.'

12 A chaz répondit: Je ne demanderai rien, je ne tenterai pas l'Éternel.

And Ahaz saith, `I do not ask nor try Jehovah.'

13 É saïe dit alors: Écoutez donc, maison de David! Est-ce trop peu pour vous de lasser la patience des hommes, Que vous lassiez encore celle de mon Dieu?

And he saith, `Hear, I pray you, O house of David, Is it a little thing for you to weary men, That ye weary also my God?

14 C 'est pourquoi le Seigneur lui-même vous donnera un signe, Voici, la jeune fille deviendra enceinte, elle enfantera un fils, Et elle lui donnera le nom d'Emmanuel.

Therefore the Lord Himself giveth to you a sign, Lo, the Virgin is conceiving, And is bringing forth a son, And hath called his name Immanuel,

15 I l mangera de la crème et du miel, Jusqu'à ce qu'il sache rejeter le mal et choisir le bien.

Butter and honey he doth eat, When he knoweth to refuse evil, and to fix on good.

16 M ais avant que l'enfant sache rejeter le mal et choisir le bien, Le pays dont tu crains les deux rois sera abandonné.

For before the youth doth know To refuse evil, and to fix on good, Forsaken is the land thou art vexed with, because of her two kings.

17 L 'Éternel fera venir sur toi, Sur ton peuple et sur la maison de ton père, Des jours tels qu'il n'y en a point eu Depuis le jour où Éphraïm s'est séparé de Juda (Le roi d'Assyrie.)

Jehovah bringeth on thee, and on thy people, And on the house of thy father, Days that have not come, Even from the day of the turning aside of Ephraim from Judah, By the king of Asshur.

18 E n ce jour-là, l'Éternel sifflera les mouches Qui sont à l'extrémité des canaux de l'Égypte, Et les abeilles qui sont au pays d'Assyrie;

And it hath come to pass, in that day, Jehovah doth hiss for a fly that in the extremity of the brooks of Egypt, And for a bee that in the land of Asshur.

19 E lles viendront, et se poseront toutes dans les vallons désolés, Et dans les fentes des rochers, Sur tous les buissons, Et sur tous les pâturages.

And they have come, and rested all of them in the desolate valleys, And in holes of the rocks, and on all the thorns, And on all the commendable things.

20 E n ce jour-là, le Seigneur rasera, avec un rasoir pris à louage Au delà du fleuve, Avec le roi d'Assyrie, La tête et le poil des pieds; Il enlèvera aussi la barbe.

In that day doth the Lord shave, By a razor that is hired beyond the river, By the king of Asshur, The head, and the hair of the feet, Yea, also the beard it consumeth.

21 E n ce jour-là, Chacun entretiendra une jeune vache et deux brebis;

And it hath come to pass, in that day, A man keepeth alive a heifer of the herd, And two of the flock,

22 E t il y aura une telle abondance de lait Qu'on mangera de la crème, Car c'est de crème et de miel que se nourriront Tous ceux qui seront restés dans le pays.

And it hath come to pass, From the abundance of the yielding of milk he eateth butter, For butter and honey doth every one eat Who is left in the heart of the land.

23 E n ce jour-là, Tout lieu qui contiendra mille ceps de vigne, Valant mille sicles d'argent, Sera livré aux ronces et aux épines:

And it hath come to pass, in that day, Every place where there are a thousand vines, At a thousand silverlings, Is for briers and for thorns.

24 O n y entrera avec les flèches et avec l'arc, Car tout le pays ne sera que ronces et épines.

With arrows and with bow he cometh thither, Because all the land is brier and thorn.

25 E t toutes les montagnes que l'on cultivait avec la bêche Ne seront plus fréquentées, par crainte des ronces et des épines: On y lâchera le boeuf, et la brebis en foulera le sol.

And all the hills that with a mattock are kept in order, Thither cometh not the fear of brier and thorn, And it hath been for the sending forth of ox, And for the treading of sheep!'
