1 J oram, fils d'Achab, régna sur Israël à Samarie, la dix-huitième année de Josaphat, roi de Juda. Il régna douze ans.

And Jehoram son of Ahab hath reigned over Israel, in Samaria, in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigneth twelve years,

2 I l fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, non pas toutefois comme son père et sa mère. Il renversa les statues de Baal que son père avait faites;

and doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, only not like his father, and like his mother, and he turneth aside the standing-pillar of Baal that his father made;

3 m ais il se livra aux péchés de Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, qui avait fait pécher Israël, et il ne s'en détourna point.

only to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat that he caused Israel to sin he hath cleaved, he hath not turned aside from it.

4 M éscha, roi de Moab, possédait des troupeaux, et il payait au roi d'Israël un tribut de cent mille agneaux et de cent mille béliers avec leur laine.

And Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master, and he rendered to the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs, and a hundred thousand rams, wool,

5 A la mort d'Achab, le roi de Moab se révolta contre le roi d'Israël.

and it cometh to pass at the death of Ahab, that the king of Moab transgresseth against the king of Israel.

6 L e roi Joram sortit alors de Samarie, et passa en revue tout Israël.

And king Jehoram goeth out in that day from Samaria, and inspecteth all Israel,

7 I l se mit en marche, et il fit dire à Josaphat, roi de Juda: Le roi de Moab s'est révolté contre moi; veux-tu venir avec moi attaquer Moab? Josaphat répondit: J'irai, moi comme toi, mon peuple comme ton peuple, mes chevaux comme tes chevaux.

and goeth and sendeth unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, `The king of Moab hath transgressed against me; dost thou go with me unto Moab for battle?' and he saith, `I go up, as I, so thou; as my people, so thy people; as my horses, so thy horses.

8 E t il dit: Par quel chemin monterons-nous? Joram dit: Par le chemin du désert d'Édom.

And he saith, `Where this -- the way we go up?' and he saith, `The way of the wilderness of Edom.'

9 L e roi d'Israël, le roi de Juda et le roi d'Édom, partirent; et après une marche de sept jours, ils manquèrent d'eau pour l'armée et pour les bêtes qui la suivaient.

And the king of Israel goeth, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and they turn round the way seven days, and there hath been no water for the camp, and for the cattle that at their feet,

10 A lors le roi d'Israël dit: Hélas! l'Éternel a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab.

and the king of Israel saith, `Alas, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings, to give them into the hand of Moab.'

11 M ais Josaphat dit: N'y a-t-il ici aucun prophète de l'Éternel, par qui nous puissions consulter l'Éternel? L'un des serviteurs du roi d'Israël répondit: Il y a ici Élisée, fils de Schaphath, qui versait l'eau sur les mains d'Élie.

And Jehoshaphat saith, `Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, and we seek Jehovah by him?' And one of the servants of the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Here Elisha son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.'

12 E t Josaphat dit: La parole de l'Éternel est avec lui. Le roi d'Israël, Josaphat et le roi d'Édom, descendirent auprès de lui.

And Jehoshaphat saith, `The word of Jehovah is with him;' and go down unto him do the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom.

13 É lisée dit au roi d'Israël: Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi? Va vers les prophètes de ton père et vers les prophètes de ta mère. Et le roi d'Israël lui dit: Non! car l'Éternel a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab.

And Elisha saith unto the king of Israel, `What -- to me and to thee? go unto the prophets of thy father, and unto the prophets of thy mother;' and the king of Israel saith to him, `Nay, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.'

14 É lisée dit: L'Éternel des armées, dont je suis le serviteur, est vivant! si je n'avais égard à Josaphat, roi de Juda, je ne ferais aucune attention à toi et je ne te regarderais pas.

And Elisha saith, `Jehovah of Hosts liveth, before whom I have stood; for unless the face of Jehoshaphat king of Judah I am lifting up, I do not look unto thee, nor see thee;

15 M aintenant, amenez-moi un joueur de harpe. Et comme le joueur de harpe jouait, la main de l'Éternel fut sur Élisée.

and now, bring to me a minstrel; and it hath been, at the playing of the minstrel, that the hand of Jehovah is on him,

16 E t il dit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Faites dans cette vallée des fosses, des fosses!

and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Make this valley ditches -- ditches;

17 C ar ainsi parle l'Éternel: Vous n'apercevrez point de vent et vous ne verrez point de pluie, et cette vallée se remplira d'eau, et vous boirez, vous, vos troupeaux et votre bétail.

for thus said Jehovah, Ye do not see wind, nor do ye see rain, and that valley is full of water, and ye have drunk -- ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

18 M ais cela est peu de chose aux yeux de l'Éternel. Il livrera Moab entre vos mains;

`And this hath been light in the eyes of Jehovah, and he hath given Moab into your hand,

19 v ous frapperez toutes les villes fortes et toutes les villes d'élite, vous abattrez tous les bons arbres, vous boucherez toutes les sources d'eau, et vous ruinerez avec des pierres tous les meilleurs champs.

and ye have smitten every fenced city, and every choice city, and every good tree ye cause to fall, and all fountains of waters ye stop, and every good portion ye mar with stones.'

20 O r le matin, au moment de la présentation de l'offrande, voici, l'eau arriva du chemin d'Édom, et le pays fut rempli d'eau.

And it cometh to pass in the morning, at the ascending of the -present, that lo, waters are coming in from the way of Edom, and the land is filled with the waters,

21 C ependant, tous les Moabites ayant appris que les rois montaient pour les attaquer, on convoqua tous ceux en âge de porter les armes et même au-dessus, et ils se tinrent sur la frontière.

and all Moab have heard that the kings have come up to fight against them, and they are called together, from every one girding on a girdle and upward, and they stand by the border.

22 I ls se levèrent de bon matin, et quand le soleil brilla sur les eaux, les Moabites virent en face d'eux les eaux rouges comme du sang.

And they rise early in the morning, and the sun hath shone on the waters, and the Moabites see, from over-against, the waters red as blood,

23 I ls dirent: C'est du sang! les rois ont tiré l'épée entre eux, ils se sont frappés les uns les autres; maintenant, Moabites, au pillage!

and say, `Blood this; the kings have been surely destroyed, and they smite each his neighbour; and now for spoil, Moab!'

24 E t ils marchèrent contre le camp d'Israël. Mais Israël se leva, et frappa Moab, qui prit la fuite devant eux. Ils pénétrèrent dans le pays, et frappèrent Moab.

And they come in unto the camp of Israel, and the Israelites rise, and smite the Moabites, and they flee from their face; and they enter into Moab, so as to smite Moab,

25 I ls renversèrent les villes, ils jetèrent chacun des pierres dans tous les meilleurs champs et les en remplirent, ils bouchèrent toutes les sources d'eau, et ils abattirent tous les bons arbres; et les frondeurs enveloppèrent et battirent Kir Haréseth, dont on ne laissa que les pierres.

and the cities they break down, and every good portion they cast each his stone, and have filled it, and every fountain of water they stop, and every good tree they cause to fall -- till one had left its stones in Kir-Haraseth, and the slingers go round and smite it.

26 L e roi de Moab, voyant qu'il avait le dessous dans le combat, prit avec lui sept cents hommes tirant l'épée pour se frayer un passage jusqu'au roi d'Édom; mais ils ne purent pas.

And the king of Moab seeth that the battle has been too strong for him, and he taketh with him seven hundred men, drawing sword, to cleave through unto the king of Edom, and they have not been able,

27 I l prit alors son fils premier-né, qui devait régner à sa place, et il l'offrit en holocauste sur la muraille. Et une grande indignation s'empara d'Israël, qui s'éloigna du roi de Moab et retourna dans son pays.

and he taketh his son, the first-born who reigneth in his stead, and causeth him to ascend -- a burnt-offering on the wall, and there is great wrath against Israel, and they journey from off him, and turn back to the land.
