1 J ehoram, figlio di Achab, cominciò a regnare sopra Israele a Samaria l'anno diciottesimo di Giosafat, re di Giuda, e regnò dodici anni.

And Jehoram son of Ahab hath reigned over Israel, in Samaria, in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigneth twelve years,

2 E gli fece ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno, ma non come suo padre e sua madre, perché tolse via la stele di Baal che suo padre aveva fatto.

and doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, only not like his father, and like his mother, and he turneth aside the standing-pillar of Baal that his father made;

3 T uttavia egli rimase attaccato ai peccati di Geroboamo figlio di Nebat, che aveva fatto peccare Israele, e non se ne allontanò.

only to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat that he caused Israel to sin he hath cleaved, he hath not turned aside from it.

4 M esha, re di Moab, era un allevatore di pecore e pagava al re d'Israele un tributo di centomila agnelli e la lana di centomila montoni.

And Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master, and he rendered to the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs, and a hundred thousand rams, wool,

5 M a alla morte di Achab, il re di Moab si ribellò al re d'Israele.

and it cometh to pass at the death of Ahab, that the king of Moab transgresseth against the king of Israel.

6 A llora il re Jehoram uscí di Samaria e chiamò a raccolta tutto Israele;

And king Jehoram goeth out in that day from Samaria, and inspecteth all Israel,

7 p oi si mise in via e mandò a dire a Giosafat, re di Giuda: «Il re di Moab si è ribellato contro di me; vuoi venire con me a combattere contro Moab?». Quegli rispose: «Verrò, conta su di me come su di te, sul mio popolo come sul tuo popolo, sui miei cavalli come sui tuoi cavalli»

and goeth and sendeth unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, `The king of Moab hath transgressed against me; dost thou go with me unto Moab for battle?' and he saith, `I go up, as I, so thou; as my people, so thy people; as my horses, so thy horses.

8 P oi domandò: «Per quale via saliremo?». Jehoram rispose: «Per la via del deserto di Edom».

And he saith, `Where this -- the way we go up?' and he saith, `The way of the wilderness of Edom.'

9 C osí il re d'Israele, il re di Giuda e il re di Edom si misero in marcia; dopo aver compiuto un percorso intorno al deserto per sette giorni venne a mancare l'acqua all'esercito e alle bestie che li seguivano.

And the king of Israel goeth, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and they turn round the way seven days, and there hath been no water for the camp, and for the cattle that at their feet,

10 A llora il re d'Israele disse: «Ahimè l'Eterno ha chiamato assieme questi tre re, per darli nelle mani di Moab!».

and the king of Israel saith, `Alas, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings, to give them into the hand of Moab.'

11 M a Giosafat chiese: «Non c'è qui un profeta dell'Eterno per mezzo del quale possiamo consultare l'Eterno?». Uno dei servi del re d'Israele rispose e disse: «C'è qui Eliseo, figlio di Shafat, il quale versava l'acqua sulle mani d'Elia».

And Jehoshaphat saith, `Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, and we seek Jehovah by him?' And one of the servants of the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Here Elisha son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.'

12 G iosafat disse: «La parola dell'Eterno è con lui». Cosí il re d'Israele Giosafat e il re di Edom discesero da lui.

And Jehoshaphat saith, `The word of Jehovah is with him;' and go down unto him do the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom.

13 M a Eliseo disse al re d'Israele: «Che ho io da fare con te? Va' dai profeti di tuo padre e dai profeti di tua madre!». Il re d'Israele gli rispose: «No, perché l'Eterno ha chiamato insieme questi tre re per darli nelle mani di Moab».

And Elisha saith unto the king of Israel, `What -- to me and to thee? go unto the prophets of thy father, and unto the prophets of thy mother;' and the king of Israel saith to him, `Nay, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.'

14 A llora Eliseo disse: «Come è vero che vive l'Eterno degli eserciti, alla cui presenza io sto, se non fosse per il rispetto che ho per Giosafat, re di Giuda, non avrei neppure badato a te e non ti avrei degnato di uno sguardo.

And Elisha saith, `Jehovah of Hosts liveth, before whom I have stood; for unless the face of Jehoshaphat king of Judah I am lifting up, I do not look unto thee, nor see thee;

15 M a ora conducetemi un suonatore». E avvenne che, mentre il suonatore arpeggiava, la mano dell'Eterno fu sopra Eliseo.

and now, bring to me a minstrel; and it hath been, at the playing of the minstrel, that the hand of Jehovah is on him,

16 A llora egli disse: «Cosí parla l'Eterno: "Scavate molte fosse in questa valle".

and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Make this valley ditches -- ditches;

17 P oiché cosí dice l'Eterno: "Voi non vedrete né vento né pioggia; tuttavia questa valle si riempirà di acqua; e berrete voi, il vostro bestiame e le vostre bestie da soma.

for thus said Jehovah, Ye do not see wind, nor do ye see rain, and that valley is full of water, and ye have drunk -- ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

18 M a questo è ancora poca cosa agli occhi dell'Eterno, perché egli darà anche Moab nelle vostre mani.

`And this hath been light in the eyes of Jehovah, and he hath given Moab into your hand,

19 V oi distruggerete tutte le città fortificate e tutte le migliori città, abbatterete tutti gli alberi buoni, turerete tutte le sorgenti d'acqua e rovinerete ogni buon appezzamento di terra con pietre"».

and ye have smitten every fenced city, and every choice city, and every good tree ye cause to fall, and all fountains of waters ye stop, and every good portion ye mar with stones.'

20 A l mattino seguente nell'ora in cui era offerta l'oblazione di cibo, ecco arrivare l'acqua dal lato di Edom e il paese ne fu ripieno.

And it cometh to pass in the morning, at the ascending of the -present, that lo, waters are coming in from the way of Edom, and the land is filled with the waters,

21 O ra tutti i Moabiti saputo che quei re erano saliti per muovere loro guerra, radunarono tutti quelli che erano in grado di portare le armi, giovani e vecchi, e si schierarono alla frontiera.

and all Moab have heard that the kings have come up to fight against them, and they are called together, from every one girding on a girdle and upward, and they stand by the border.

22 Q uando si alzarono al mattino presto, il sole splendeva sulle acque; allora i Moabiti videro davanti a loro le acque rosse come sangue;

And they rise early in the morning, and the sun hath shone on the waters, and the Moabites see, from over-against, the waters red as blood,

23 e dissero: «Quello è sangue! Certamente quei re sono venuti alle mani e si sono uccisi l'un l'altro; or dunque, Moab, alla preda!».

and say, `Blood this; the kings have been surely destroyed, and they smite each his neighbour; and now for spoil, Moab!'

24 C osí avanzarono verso il campo d'Israele; ma gli Israeliti si levarono e sbaragliarono i Moabiti, che fuggirono davanti a loro. Si inoltrarono quindi nel paese, continuando a uccidere i Moabiti.

And they come in unto the camp of Israel, and the Israelites rise, and smite the Moabites, and they flee from their face; and they enter into Moab, so as to smite Moab,

25 D istrussero le città; ogni buon appezzamento di terra lo riempirono di pietre ciascuno gettandovi la sua; turarono tutte le sorgenti d'acqua e abbatterono tutti gli alberi buoni. Di Kir-Hareseth rimanevano soltanto le pietre, ma i frombolieri la circondarono e l'attaccarono.

and the cities they break down, and every good portion they cast each his stone, and have filled it, and every fountain of water they stop, and every good tree they cause to fall -- till one had left its stones in Kir-Haraseth, and the slingers go round and smite it.

26 I l re di Moab, vedendo che la battaglia era troppo forte per lui, prese con sé settecento uomini che brandivano la spada, per aprirsi un varco fino al re di Edom; ma non poterono.

And the king of Moab seeth that the battle has been too strong for him, and he taketh with him seven hundred men, drawing sword, to cleave through unto the king of Edom, and they have not been able,

27 A llora prese il suo figlio primogenito, che avrebbe dovuto regnare al suo posto, e l'offerse in olocausto sopra le mura. Vi fu allora grande indignazione contro quei d'Israele, che si allontanarono da lui e ritornarono al loro paese.

and he taketh his son, the first-born who reigneth in his stead, and causeth him to ascend -- a burnt-offering on the wall, and there is great wrath against Israel, and they journey from off him, and turn back to the land.
