1 O r gli Zifei vennero da Saul a Ghibeah e gli dissero: «Non è forse Davide nascosto sulla collina di Hakilah ai margini del deserto?».

And the Ziphites come in unto Saul, at Gibeah, saying, `Is not David hiding himself in the height of Hachilah, on the front of the desert?'

2 A llora Saul si levò e scese verso il deserto di Zif, avendo con sé tremila uomini scelti d'Israele per cercare Davide nel deserto di Zif.

And Saul riseth, and goeth down unto the wilderness of Ziph, and with him three thousand men, chosen ones of Israel, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

3 S aul si accampò sulla collina di Haki-lah che è ai margini del deserto presso la strada, mentre Davide stava nel deserto. Quando si rese conto che Saul veniva a cercarlo nel deserto.

And Saul encampeth in the height of Hachilah, which on the front of the desert, by the way, and David is abiding in the wilderness, and he seeth that Saul hath come after him in to the wilderness;

4 D avide mandò alcune spie e seppe che Saul era veramente arrivato.

and David sendeth spies, and knoweth that Saul hath come unto Nachon,

5 A llora Davide si levò e andò al luogo dove Saul era accampato. Davide notò il luogo dove erano coricati Saul e Abner, il figlio di Ner, capo del suo esercito. Saul era coricato nel campo dei carri, e la sua gente era accampata intorno a lui.

and David riseth, and cometh in unto the place where Saul hath encamped, and David seeth the place where Saul hath lain, and Abner son of Ner, head of his host, and Saul is lying in the path, and the people are encamping round about him.

6 D avide si rivolse quindi ad Ahimelek, lo Hitteo, e ad Abishai figlio di Tseruiah fratello di Joab e disse: «Chi scenderà con me da Saul nell'accampamento?». Abishai rispose: «Scenderò io con te».

And David answereth and saith unto Ahimelech the Hittite, and unto Abishai son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, saying, `Who doth go down with me unto Saul, unto the camp?' and Abishai saith, `I -- I go down with thee.'

7 C osì Davide ed Abishai giunsero da quella gente di notte; ed ecco che Saul giaceva addormentato nel campo dei carri, con la sua lancia infissa a terra dalla parte del capo, mentre Abner e la sua gente erano coricati intorno a lui.

And David cometh -- and Abishai -- unto the people by night, and lo, Saul is lying sleeping in the path, and his spear struck into the earth at his pillow, and abner and the people are lying round about him.

8 A llora Abishai disse a Davide: «Oggi DIO ti ha messo nelle mani il tuo nemico; perciò ti prego, lascia che lo colpisca con la lancia e lo inchiodi a terra con un sol colpo; non ci sarà bisogno di un secondo».

And Abishai saith unto David, `God hath shut up to-day thine enemy into thy hand; and, now, let me smite him, I pray thee, with a spear, even into the earth at once -- and I do repeat to him.'

9 M a Davide disse ad Abishai: «Non ucciderlo, chi infatti potrebbe stendere la mano contro l'unto dell'Eterno senza rendersi colpevole?».

And David saith unto Abishai, `Destroy him not; for who hath put forth his hand against the anointed of Jehovah, and been acquitted?'

10 P oi Davide aggiunse: «Com'è vero che l'Eterno vive, solo l'Eterno lo colpirà: o perché arriverà il suo giorno e morirà, o perché andrà a combattere e verrà ucciso.

And David saith, `Jehovah liveth; except Jehovah doth smite him, or his day come that he hath died, or into battle he go down, and hath been consumed --

11 L 'Eterno mi guardi dallo stendere la mia mano contro l'unto dell'Eterno! Ora, ti prego prendi la lancia che è vicina al suo capo e la brocca dell'acqua e andiamocene».

far be it from me, by Jehovah, from putting forth my hand against the anointed of Jehovah; and, now, take, I pray thee, the spear which at his pillow, and the cruse of water, and we go away.'

12 C osì Davide prese la lancia e la brocca dell'acqua che era vicina al capo di Saul e se ne andarono. Nessuno vide, nessuno se ne accorse, nessuno si svegliò; tutti dormivano perché un sonno profondo mandato dall'Eterno era caduto su di loro.

And David taketh the spear, and the cruse of water at the pillow of Saul, and they go away, and there is none seeing, and there is none knowing, and there is none awaking, for all of them are sleeping, for a deep sleep Jehovah hath fallen upon them.

13 P oi Davide passò dal lato opposto e si fermò lontano in cima al monte; c'era una grande distanza fra di loro.

And David passeth over to the other side, and standeth on the top of the hill afar off -- great the place between them;

14 A llora Davide gridò alla gente di Saul e ad Abner, figlio di Ner, e disse: «Abner, non rispondi?». Abner rispose e disse: «Chi sei tu che gridi al re?».

and David calleth unto the people, and unto Abner son of Ner, saying, `Dost thou not answer, Abner?' and Abner answereth and saith, `Who thou hast called unto the king?'

15 C osì Davide disse ad Abner: «Non sei tu un uomo valoroso? E chi è pari a te in Israele? Perché dunque non hai fatto buona guardia al re tuo signore? Uno del popolo infatti è venuto per uccidere il re tuo signore.

And David saith unto Abner, `Art not thou a man? and who like thee in Israel? but why hast thou not watched over thy lord the king? for one of the people had come in to destroy the king, thy lord.

16 C iò che hai compiuto non è affatto buono. Com 'è vero che l'Eterno vive voi meritate la morte perché non avete fatto buona guardia al vostro signore l'unto dell'Eterno! E ora guarda dov'è la lancia del re e la brocca dell'acqua che era presso il suo capo!».

Not good is this thing which thou hast done; Jehovah liveth, but ye sons of death, in that ye have not watched over your lord, over the anointed of Jehovah; and now, see where the king's spear, and the cruse of water which at his bolster.'

17 S aul riconobbe la voce di Davide e disse: «E' questa la tua voce, o figlio mio Davide?». Davide rispose «E' la mia voce, o re, mio signore!».

And Saul discerneth the voice of David, and saith, `Is this thy voice, my son David?' and David saith, `My voice, my lord, O king!'

18 P oi aggiunse: «Perché il mio signore perseguita il suo servo? Che cosa ho fatto? Che malvagità ho commesso?

and he saith, `Why this -- my lord is pursuing after his servant? for what have I done, and what in my hand evil?

19 O ra perciò ascolti di grazia, il re mio signore le parole del suo servo. Se è l'Eterno che t'incita contro di me, egli accetti un'oblazione! Ma se sono gli uomini, siano maledetti davanti all'Eterno, perché oggi mi hanno scacciato per impedirmi di aver parte all'eredità dell'Eterno, dicendomi: "Va' a servire altri dei".

And, now, let, I pray thee, my lord the king hear the words of his servant: if Jehovah hath moved thee against me, let Him accept a present; and if the sons of men -- cursed they before Jehovah, for they have cast me out to-day from being admitted into the inheritance of Jehovah, saying, Go, serve other gods.

20 O ra dunque il mio sangue non cada a terra lontano dalla presenza dell'Eterno, Poiché il re d'Israele è uscito per andare in cerca di una pulce, come si dà la caccia a una pernice su per i monti».

`And now, let not my blood fall to the earth over-against the face of Jehovah, for the king of Israel hath come out to seek one flea, as pursueth the partridge in mountains.'

21 A llora Saul disse: «Ho peccato torna, figlio mio Davide, poiché, io non ti farò più alcun male, perché oggi la mia vita e stata preziosa ai tuoi occhi, ecco ho agito da stolto e mi sono grandemente sbagliato».

And Saul saith, `I have sinned; turn back, my son David, for I do evil to thee no more, because that my soul hath been precious in thine eyes this day; lo, I have acted foolishly, and do err very greatly.'

22 D avide rispose: «Ecco la lancia del re; venga qui uno dei giovani a prenderla.

And David answereth and saith, `Lo, the king's spear; and let one of the young men pass over, and receive it;

23 L 'Eterno renderà a ciascuno secondo la sua giustizia e la sua fedeltà; oggi infatti l'Eterno ti aveva dato nelle mie mani, ma io non ho voluto stendere la mia mano contro l'unto dell'Eterno.

and Jehovah doth turn back to each his righteousness and his faithfulness, in that Jehovah hath given thee to-day into hand, and I have not been willing to put forth my hand against the anointed of Jehovah,

24 C ome oggi la tua vita è stata preziosa ai miei occhi, così sarà preziosa la mia vita agli occhi dell'Eterno; ed egli mi liberi da ogni avversità».

and lo, as thy soul hath been great this day in mine eyes, so is my soul great in the eyes of Jehovah, and He doth deliver me out of all distress.'

25 A llora Saul disse a Davide: «Sii tu benedetto, figlio mio Davide. Tu farai grandi cose e sarai certamente vittorioso». Così Davide continuò il suo cammino e Saul tornò a casa sua.

And Saul saith unto David, `Blessed thou, my son David, also working thou dost work, and also prevailing thou dost prevail.' And David goeth on his way, and Saul hath turned back to his place.
