1 L 'Eterno disse a Samuele: «Fino a quando farai cordoglio per Saul, mentre io l'ho rigettato perché non regni sopra Israele? Riempi il tuo corno di olio e va'; ti mando da Isai il Betlemita, perché mi sono scelto un re tra i suoi figli».

And Jehovah saith unto Samuel, `Till when art thou mourning for Saul, and I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go, I send thee unto Jesse the Beth-Lehemite, for I have seen among his sons for Myself a king.

2 S amuele rispose: «Come posso andare? Saul lo verrà a sapere e mi ucciderà». L'Eterno disse: «Prenderai con te una giovenca e dirai: "Sono venuto per offrire un sacrificio all'Eterno".

And Samuel saith, `How do I go? when Saul hath heard, then he hath slain me.' And Jehovah saith, `A heifer of the herd thou dost take in thy hand, and hast said, To sacrifice to Jehovah I have come;

3 I nviterai Isai al sacrificio, io ti indicherò ciò che dovrai fare, e tu mi ungerai colui che ti dirò».

and thou hast called for Jesse in the sacrifice, and I cause thee to know that which thou dost do, and thou hast anointed to Me him of whom I speak unto thee.'

4 C osì Samuele fece quello che l'Eterno gli aveva detto e andò a Betlemme; gli anziani della città gli andarono incontro tremanti e gli dissero: «Vieni pacificamente?».

And Samuel doth that which Jehovah hath spoken, and cometh in to Beth-Lehem, and the elders of the city tremble to meet him, and saith, `Is thy coming peace?'

5 E gli rispose: «Vengo pacificamente; sono venuto ad offrire un sacrificio all'Eterno; purificatevi e venite con me al sacrificio». Fece anche purificare Isai e i suoi figli e li invitò al sacrificio.

and he saith, `Peace; to sacrifice to Jehovah I have come, sanctify yourselves, and ye have come in with me to the sacrifice;' and he sanctifieth Jesse and his sons, and calleth them to the sacrifice.

6 Q uando essi giunsero, egli posò lo sguardo su Eliab e disse: «Certamente l'unto dell'Eterno è davanti a lui».

And it cometh to pass, in their coming in, that he seeth Eliab, and saith, `Surely, before Jehovah His anointed.'

7 M a l'Eterno disse a Samuele: «Non badare al suo aspetto né all'altezza della sua statura, poiché io l'ho rifiutato, perché l'Eterno non vede come vede l'uomo; l'uomo infatti guarda all'apparenza, ma l'Eterno guarda al cuore».

And Jehovah saith unto Samuel, `Look not unto his appearance, and unto the height of his stature, for I have rejected him; for not as man seeth -- for man looketh at the eyes, and Jehovah looketh at the heart.'

8 A llora Isai chiamò Abinadab e lo fece passare davanti a Samuele; ma Samuele disse: «L'Eterno non si è scelto neppure questo».

And Jesse calleth unto Abinadab, and causeth him to pass by before Samuel; and he saith, `Also on this Jehovah hath not fixed.'

9 P oi Isai fece passare Shammah, ma Samuele disse: «L'Eterno non si è scelto neppure questo».

And Jesse causeth Shammah to pass by, and he saith, `Also on this Jehovah hath not fixed.'

10 I sai fece così passare sette dei suoi figli davanti a Samuele; ma Samuele disse ad Isai: «L'Eterno non ha scelto nessuno di questi».

And Jesse causeth seven of his sons to pass by before Samuel, and Samuel saith to Jesse, `Jehovah hath not fixed on these.'

11 P oi Samuele disse ad Isai: «Sono tutti qui i tuoi figli?». Egli rispose: «Rimane ancora il più giovane che ora si trova a pascolare le pecore». Samuele disse ad Isai: «Manda a prenderlo, perché non ci metteremo a tavola prima che sia giunto qui».

And Samuel saith unto Jesse, `Are the young men finished?' and he saith, `Yet hath been left the youngest; and lo, he delighteth himself among the flock;' and Samuel saith unto Jesse, `Send and take him, for we do not turn round till his coming in hither.'

12 A llora egli lo mandò a prendere or Davide era rossiccio, con begli occhi e un bell'aspetto. E l'Eterno disse a Samuele: «Levati, ungilo, perché è lui».

And he sendeth, and bringeth him in, and he ruddy, with beauty of eyes, and of good appearance; and Jehovah saith, `Rise, anoint him, for this he.'

13 A llora Samuele prese il corno dell'olio e lo unse in mezzo ai suoi fratelli; da quel giorno in poi lo Spirito dell'Eterno investì Davide. Poi Samuele si levò e andò a Ramah.

And Samuel taketh the horn of oil, and anointeth him in the midst of his brethren, and prosper over David doth the Spirit of Jehovah from that day and onwards; and Samuel riseth and goeth to Ramath.

14 O r lo Spirito dell'Eterno si era allontanato da Saul e un cattivo spirito da parte dell'Eterno lo terrorizzava.

And the Spirit of Jehovah turned aside from Saul, and a spirit of sadness from Jehovah terrified him;

15 I servi di Saul gli dissero: «Ecco, un cattivo spirito da parte di DIO ti turba.

and the servants of Saul say unto him, `Lo, we pray thee, a spirit of sadness God is terrifying thee;

16 I l nostro signore comandi dunque ai tuoi servi che ti stanno davanti di cercare un uomo che suoni bene l'arpa; quando poi il cattivo spirito da parte di DIO ti investirà, egli metterà mano all'arpa e tu starai bene».

let our lord command, we pray thee, thy servants before thee, they seek a skilful man, playing on a harp, and it hath come to pass, in the spirit of sadness God being upon thee, that he hath played with his hand, and well with thee.'

17 S aul disse ai suoi servitori: «Trovatemi un uomo che suoni bene e fatelo venire da me».

And Saul saith unto his servants, `Provide, I pray you, for me a man playing well -- then ye have brought in unto me.'

18 A llora uno dei domestici prese a dire: «Ecco io ho veduto un figlio di Isai, il Betlemita, che sa suonare bene: è un uomo forte e valoroso, abile nel combattere, eloquente nel parlare e di bell'aspetto, e l'Eterno è con lui».

And one of the servants answereth and saith, `Lo, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-Lehemite, skilful in playing, and a mighty virtuous man, and a man of battle, and intelligent in word, and a man of form, and Jehovah with him.'

19 S aul dunque inviò dei messaggeri a Isai per dirgli: «Mandami tuo figlio Davide, che è col gregge».

And Saul sendeth messengers unto Jesse, and saith, `Send unto me David thy son, who with the flock.'

20 A llora Isai prese un asino carico di pane, un otre di vino, un capretto e li mandò a Saul per mezzo di Davide suo figlio.

And Jesse taketh an ass, bread, and a bottle of wine, and one kid of the goats, and sendeth by the hand of David his son unto Saul.

21 D avide arrivò da Saul e rimase al suo servizio; Saul si affezionò grandemente a lui ed egli divenne suo scudiero.

And David cometh in unto Saul, and standeth before him, and he loveth him greatly; and he is a bearer of his weapons.

22 S aul mandò quindi a dire a Isai: «Ti prego, lascia Davide al mio servizio, perché ha trovato grazia ai miei occhi».

And Saul sendeth unto Jesse, saying, `Let David, I pray thee, stand before me, for he hath found grace in mine eyes.'

23 O ra, quando il cattivo spirito da parte di DIO investiva Saul, Davide prendeva l'arpa e la suonava con la mano; allora Saul si sentiva risollevato e stava meglio, e il cattivo spirito si allontanava da lui.

And it hath come to pass, in the spirit of God being on Saul, that David hath taken the harp, and played with his hand, and Saul hath refreshment and gladness, and the spirit of sadness hath turned aside from off him.
