1 L 'Eterno apparve ad Abrahamo alle querce di Mamre, mentre egli sedeva all'ingresso della tenda durante il caldo del giorno.

And Jehovah appeareth unto him among the oaks of Mamre, and he is sitting at the opening of the tent, about the heat of the day;

2 A brahamo alzò gli occhi ed ecco, tre uomini stavano in piedi accanto a lui. Appena li vide, corse loro incontro dall'ingresso della tenda, si prostrò fino a terra e disse:

and he lifteth up his eyes and looketh, and lo, three men standing by him, and he seeth, and runneth to meet them from the opening of the tent, and boweth himself towards the earth,

3 « Signor mio, se ho trovato grazia davanti a te, ti prego non passar senza fermarti dal tuo servo!

And he saith, `My Lord, if, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes, do not, I pray thee, pass on from thy servant;

4 D eh, lasciate che si porti un po' d'acqua, affinché possiate lavarvi i piedi, e riposatevi sotto questo albero.

let, I pray thee, a little water be accepted, and wash your feet, and recline under the tree;

5 I o andrò a prendere un pezzo di pane, così potrete rinfrancare il vostro cuore; poi proseguirete il vostro cammino perché per questo siete passati dal vostro servo». Quelli dissero: «Fa' come hai detto».

and I bring a piece of bread, and support ye your heart; afterwards pass on, for therefore have ye passed over unto your servant;' and they say, `So mayest thou do as thou has spoken.'

6 A llora Abrahamo andò in fretta nella tenda, da Sara, e le disse: «Presto prendi tre misure di fior di farina, impastala e fanne delle focacce».

And Abraham hasteth towards the tent, unto Sarah, and saith, `Hasten three measures of flour-meal, knead, and make cakes;'

7 P oi Abrahamo corse all'armento, scelse un vitello tenero e buono, lo diede a un servo, e si affrettò a prepararlo.

and Abraham ran unto the herd, and taketh a son of the herd, tender and good, and giveth unto the young man, and he hasteth to prepare it;

8 P rese poi della cagliata, del latte e il vitello che aveva preparato, e li pose davanti a loro; mentre essi mangiavano, egli rimase in piedi accanto a loro, sotto l'albero.

and he taketh butter and milk, and the son of the herd which he hath prepared, and setteth before them; and he is standing by them under the tree, and they do eat.

9 P oi essi gli dissero: «Dov'è Sara tua moglie?». Abrahamo rispose: «E là nella tenda».

And they say unto him, `Where Sarah thy wife?' and he saith, `Lo -- in the tent;'

10 E d egli disse: «Tornerò certamente da te l'anno prossimo a questo tempo; ed ecco, Sara tua moglie avrà un figlio». E Sara ascoltava all'ingresso della tenda, che era dietro di lui.

and he saith, `returning I return unto thee, about the time of life, and lo, to Sarah thy wife a son.'

11 O ra Abrahamo e Sara erano vecchi, di età avanzata, e Sara non aveva piú i ricorsi ordinari delle donne.

And Sarah is hearkening at the opening of the tent, which is behind him;

12 P erciò Sara rise dentro di sé, dicendo: «Vecchia come sono, avrei io tali piaceri, dato che il mio stesso signore è vecchio?».

and Abraham and Sarah aged, entering into days -- the way of women hath ceased to be to Sarah;

13 E l'Eterno disse ad Abrahamo: «Perché mai ha riso Sara dicendo: "Partorirò io per davvero, vecchia come sono?".

and Sarah laugheth in her heart, saying, `After I have waxed old I have had pleasure! -- my lord also old!'

14 V i è forse qualcosa che sia troppo difficile per l'Eterno? Al tempo fissato, fra un anno, ritornerò da te, e Sara avrà un figlio».

And Jehovah saith unto Abraham, `Why this? Sarah hath laughed, saying, Is it true really -- I bear -- and I am aged? Is any thing too wonderful for Jehovah? at the appointed time I return unto thee, about the time of life, and Sarah hath a son.'

15 A llora Sara negò, dicendo: «Non ho riso», perché ebbe paura. Ma egli disse: «Invece hai riso!».

And Sarah denieth, saying, `I did not laugh;' for she hath been afraid; and He saith, `Nay, but thou didst laugh.'

16 P oi quegli uomini si alzarono di là e volsero gli sguardi verso Sodoma; e Abrahamo camminava con loro per accomiatarli.

And the men rise from thence, and look on the face of Sodom, and Abraham is going with them to send them away;

17 E l'Eterno disse: «Celerò io ad Abrahamo quello che sto per fare

and Jehovah said, `Am I concealing from Abraham that which I am doing,

18 p oiché Abrahamo deve diventare una nazione grande e potente e in lui saranno benedette tutte le nazioni della terra?

and Abraham certainly becometh a nation great and mighty, and blessed in him have been all nations of the earth?

19 I o infatti l'ho scelto, perché ordini ai suoi figli e alla sua casa dopo di lui di seguire la via dell'Eterno, mettendo in pratica la giustizia e l'equità, perché l'Eterno possa compiere per Abrahamo ciò che gli ha promesso».

for I have known him, that he commandeth his children, and his house after him (and they have kept the way of Jehovah), to do righteousness and judgment, that Jehovah may bring on Abraham that which He hath spoken concerning him.'

20 E l'Eterno disse: «Siccome il grido che sale da Sodoma e Gomorra è grande e siccome il loro peccato è molto grave,

And Jehovah saith, `The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah -- because great; and their sin -- because exceeding grievous:

21 i o scenderò per vedere se hanno veramente fatto secondo il grido che è giunto a me; in caso contrario, lo saprò».

I go down now, and see whether according to its cry which is coming unto Me they have done completely -- and if not -- I know;'

22 P oi quegli uomini si allontanarono di là e si avviarono verso Sodoma; ma Abrahamo rimase ancora davanti all'Eterno.

and the men turn from thence, and go towards Sodom; and Abraham is yet standing before Jehovah.

23 A llora Abrahamo si avvicinò e disse: «Farai perire il giusto insieme con l'empio?

And Abraham draweth nigh and saith, `Dost Thou also consume righteous with wicked?

24 A mmesso che ci siano cinquanta giusti nella città. distruggeresti tu il luogo e non lo risparmieresti per amore dei cinquanta giusti che si trovano nel suo mezzo?

peradventure there are fifty righteous in the midst of the city; dost Thou also consume, and not bear with the place for the sake of the fifty -- the righteous who in its midst?

25 L ungi da te il fare tale cosa: far morire il giusto con l'empio, cosicché il giusto sia trattato come l'empio; lungi da te! Il giudice di tutta la terra non farà egli giustizia?».

Far be it from Thee to do according to this thing, to put to death the righteous with the wicked; that it hath been -- as the righteous so the wicked -- far be it from Thee; doth the Judge of all the earth not do justice?'

26 L 'Eterno disse: «Se trovo nella città di Sodoma cinquanta giusti, io risparmierò l'intero luogo per amor loro».

And Jehovah saith, `If I find in Sodom fifty righteous in the midst of the city, then have I borne with all the place for their sake.'

27 A llora Abrahamo riprese e disse: «Ecco, prendo l'ardire di parlare al Signore, benché io non sia che polvere e cenere.

And Abraham answereth and saith, `Lo, I pray thee, I have willed to speak unto the Lord, and I -- dust and ashes;

28 A mmesso che a quei cinquanta giusti ne manchino cinque. distruggeresti tu l'intera città per cinque di meno?». l'Eterno rispose: «Se ve ne trovo quarantacinque, non la distruggerò».

peradventure there are lacking five of the fifty righteous -- dost Thou destroy for five the whole of the city?' and He saith, `I destroy not, if I find there forty and five.'

29 A brahamo continuò a parlargli e disse: «Ammesso che in città se ne trovino quaranta?». E l'Eterno: «Non lo farò, per amor dei quaranta».

And he addeth again to speak unto Him and saith, `Peradventure there are found there forty?' and He saith, `I do not, because of the forty.'

30 A llora Abrahamo disse: «Deh, non si adiri il Signore, ed io parlerò. Ammesso che in città se ne trovino trenta?». L'Eterno rispose: «Non lo Farò se ve ne trovo trenta».

And he saith, `Let it not be, I Pray thee, displeasing to the Lord, and I speak: peradventure there are found there thirty?' and He saith, `I do not, if I find there thirty.'

31 E Abrahamo disse: «Ecco, prendo l'ardire di parlare al Signore. Ammesso che in città se ne trovino venti?». L'Eterno rispose: «Non la distruggerò, per amor dei venti».

And he saith, `Lo, I pray thee, I have willed to speak unto the Lord: peradventure there are found there twenty?' and He saith, `I do not destroy, because of the twenty.'

32 E Abrahamo disse: «Deh, non si adiri il Signore e io parlerò ancora questa volta soltanto. Ammesso che in città se ne trovino dieci?». L'Eterno rispose: «Non la distruggeró per amore dei dieci».

And he saith, `Let it not be, I pray Thee, displeasing to the Lord, and I speak only this time: peradventure there are found there ten?' and He saith, `I do not destroy, because of the ten.'

33 C ome l'Eterno ebbe finito di parlare ad Abrahamo. se ne andò. E Abrahamo tornò alla sua dimora.

And Jehovah goeth on, when He hath finished speaking unto Abraham, and Abraham hath turned back to his place.
