1 D opo la morte di Giosuè, i figli d'Israele consultarono l'Eterno, dicendo: «Chi di noi andrà per primo a combattere contro i Cananei?».

And it cometh to pass, after the death of Joshua, that the sons of Israel ask at Jehovah, saying, `Who doth go up for us unto the Canaanite, at the commencement, to fight against it?'

2 L 'Eterno rispose: «Andrá Giuda; ecco, io ho dato il paese nelle sue mani».

And Jehovah saith, `Judah doth go up; lo, I have given the land into his hand.'

3 A llora Giuda disse a Simeone suo fratello: «Vieni con me nel paese che mi è toccato in sorte, e combatteremo contro i Cananei; poi anch'io verrò con te nel paese che è toccato in sorte a te». E Simeone partì con lui.

And Judah saith to Simeon his brother, `Go up with me into my lot, and we fight against the Canaanite -- and I have gone, even I, with thee into thy lot;' and Simeon goeth with him.

4 G iuda dunque andò, e l'Eterno diede nelle loro mani i Cananei e i Perezei; e a Bezek uccisero diecimila uomini.

And Judah goeth up, and Jehovah giveth the Canaanite and the Perizzite into their hand, and they smite them in Bezek -- ten thousand men;

5 A Bezek trovarono Adoni-Bezek e l'attaccarono; e sconfissero i Cananei e i Perezei.

and they find Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fight against him, and smite the Canaanite and the Perizzite.

6 A doni-Bezek fuggì, ma essi lo inseguirono, lo presero e gli tagliarono le dita grosse delle mani e dei piedi.

And Adoni-Bezek fleeth, and they pursue after him, and seize him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes,

7 A llora Adoni-Bezek disse: «Settanta re con le dita grosse delle loro mani e dei loro piedi tagliate raccoglievano gli avanzi sotto la mia mensa. DIO mi ha reso ciò che io ho fatto». Lo portarono quindi a Gerusalemme dove morì.

and Adoni-Bezek saith, `Seventy kings -- their thumbs and their great toes cut off -- have been gathering under my table; as I have done so hath God repaid to me;' and they bring him in to Jerusalem, and he dieth there.

8 I figli di Giuda attaccarono Gerusalemme e la presero; passarono gli abitanti a fil di spada e diedero la città alle fiamme.

And the sons of Judah fight against Jerusalem, and capture it, and smite it by the mouth of the sword, and the city they have sent into fire;

9 P oi i figli di Giuda scesero a combattere contro i Cananei che abitavano la regione montuosa, il Neghev e il bassopiano.

and afterwards have the sons of Judah gone down to fight against the Canaanite, inhabiting the hill-country, and the south, and the low country;

10 G iuda marciò quindi contro i Cananei che abitavano a Hebron, (il cui nome era prima Kirjath-Arba) e sconfisse Sceshai, Ahiman e Talmai.

and Judah goeth unto the Canaanite who is dwelling in Hebron (and the name of Hebron formerly Kirjath-Arba), and they smite Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

11 D i là marciò contro gli abitanti di Debir, (che prima si chiamava Kirath-Sefer).

And he goeth thence unto the inhabitants of Debir (and the name of Debir formerly Kirjath-Sepher),

12 A llora Caleb disse: «A chi attaccherà Kirath-Sefer e la espugnerà io darò in moglie mia figlia Aksah».

and Caleb saith, `He who smiteth Kirjath-Sepher -- and hath captured it -- then I have given to him Achsah my daughter for a wife.'

13 L a espugnò Othniel, figlio di Kenaz, fratello minore di Caleb, e questi gli diede in moglie sua figlia Aksah.

And Othniel son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb, doth capture it, and he giveth to him Achsah his daughter for a wife.

14 Q uando ella venne a stare con lui, lo persuase a chiedere a suo padre un campo. Appena essa smontò dall'asino, Caleb le disse: «Che vuoi?».

And it cometh to pass in her coming in, that she persuadeth him to ask from her father the field, and she lighteth from off the ass, and Caleb saith to her, `What -- to thee?'

15 E ssa rispose: «Fammi un dono; poiché tu mi hai dato della terra nel Neghev dammi anche delle sorgenti d'acqua». Allora egli le donò le sorgenti superiori e le sorgenti inferiori.

And she saith to him, `Give to me a blessing; when the south land thou hast given me -- then thou hast given to me springs of water; and Caleb giveth to her the upper springs and the lower springs.

16 O r i figli del Keneo, suocero di Mosè, salirono dalla città delle palme con i figli di Giuda nel deserto di Giuda, che si trova nel Neghev, vicino a Arad; andarono e si stabilirono fra il popolo.

And the sons of the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, have gone up out of the city of palms with the sons of Judah the wilderness of Judah, which in the south of Arad, and they go and dwell with the people.

17 P oi Giuda partì con Simeone suo fratello e sconfissero i Cananei che abitavano in Tsefath, e la votarono allo sterminio; per questo la città fu chiamata Hormah.

And Judah goeth with Simeon his brother, and they smite the Canaanite inhabiting Zephath, and devote it; and calleth the name of the city Hormah.

18 G iuda prese anche Gaza col suo territorio, Askalon col suo territorio ed Ekron col suo territorio.

And Judah captureth Gaza and its border, and Askelon and its border, and Ekron and its border;

19 C osì l'Eterno fu con Giuda, che scacciò gli abitati della regione montuosa; ma non potè scacciare gli abitanti della pianura. perché avevano dei carri di ferro.

and Jehovah is with Judah, and he occupieth the hill-country, but not to dispossess the inhabitants of the valley, for they have chariots of iron.

20 D iedero quindi Hebron a Caleb, come Mosè aveva detto; ed egli ne scacciò i tre figli di Anak.

And they give to Caleb Hebron, as Moses hath spoken, and he dispossesseth thence the three sons of Anak.

21 I figli di Beniamino non scacciarono i Gebusei che abitavano Gerusalemme; così i Gebusei hanno abitato con i figli di Beniamino in Gerusalemme fino al giorno d'oggi.

And the Jebusite, inhabiting Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin have not dispossessed; and the Jebusite dwelleth with the sons of Benjamin, in Jerusalem, till this day.

22 L a casa di Giuseppe salì anch'essa contro Bethel, e l'Eterno fu con loro.

And the house of Joseph go up -- even they -- to Beth-El, and Jehovah with them;

23 L a casa di Giuseppe mandò ad esplorare Bethel, (città che prima si chiamava Luz)

and the house of Joseph cause to spy about Beth-El (and the name of the city formerly is Luz),

24 G li esploratori videro un uomo che usciva dalla città e gli dissero: «Deh mostraci la via di accesso alla città e noi ti useremo misericordia».

and the watchers see a man coming out from the city, and say to him, `Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance of the city, and we have done with thee kindness.'

25 E gli mostrò loro la via di accesso alla città, ed essi passarono gli abitanti della città a fil di spada, ma lasciarono andare quell'uomo con tutta la sua famiglia.

And he sheweth them the entrance of the city, and they smite the city by the mouth of the sword, and the man and all his family they have sent away;

26 C ostui andò nel paese degli Hittei e vi edificò una città che chiamò Luz, nome che porta fino al giorno d'oggi.

and the man goeth to the land of the Hittites, and buildeth a city, and calleth its name Luz -- it its name unto this day.

27 M anasse invece non scacciò gli abitanti i Beth-Scean e dei suoi villaggi limitrofi, né quelli i Taanak e dei suoi villaggi limitrofi, né gli abitanti di Dor e dei suoi villaggi limitrofi, né gli abitanti d'Ibleam e dei suoi villaggi limitrofi, né gli abitanti di Meghiddo e dei suoi villaggi limitrofi, perché i Cananei erano risoluti a restare in quel paese.

And Manasseh hath not occupied Beth-Shean and its towns, and Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Iblaim and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, and the Canaanite is desirous to dwell in that land;

28 I n seguito, quando Israele divenne forte, assoggettò i Cananei a servitú ma non li scacciò del tutto.

and it cometh to pass, when Israel hath been strong, that he setteth the Canaanite to tribute, and hath not utterly dispossessed it.

29 N eppure Efraim scacciò i Cananei che abitavano a Ghezer, così i Cananei abitarono in Ghezer in mezzo a loro.

And Ephraim hath not dispossessed the Canaanite who is dwelling in Gezer, and the Canaanite dwelleth in its midst, in Gezer.

30 N eppure Zabulon scacciò gli abitanti di Kitron e gli abitanti di Nahalol; così i Cananei abitarono in mezzo a loro ma furono sottoposti a servitú.

Zebulun hath not dispossessed the inhabitants of Kitron, and the inhabitants of Nahalol, and the Canaanite dwelleth in its midst, and they become tributary.

31 N eppure Ascer scacciò gli abitanti di Akko, né gli abitanti di Sidone, né quelli di Ahlab, di Akzib, di Helbah, di Afik e di Rehob;

Asher hath not dispossessed the inhabitants of Accho, and the inhabitants of Zidon, and Ahlab, and Achzib, and Helbah, and Aphik, and Rehob;

32 c osì i figli di Ascer si stabilirono in mezzo ai Cananei che abitavano il paese, perché non li scacciarono.

and the Asherite dwelleth in the midst of the Canaanite, the inhabitants of the land, for it hath not dispossessed them.

33 N eppure Neftali scacciò gli abitanti di Betfi-Scemesh e gli abitanti di Bet-Anath, e si stabilì in mezzo ai Cananei che abitavano il paese; ma gli abitanti di Beth-Scemesh e di Beth-Anath furono da loro sottoposti a servitú.

Naphtali hath not dispossessed the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh, and the inhabitants of Beth-Anath, and he dwelleth in the midst of the Canaanite, the inhabitants of the land; and the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh and of Beth-Anath have become tributary to them.

34 G li Amorei costrinsero i figli di Dan a rimanere nella regione montuosa e non li lasciarono scendere nella valle.

And the Amorites press the sons of Dan to the mountain, for they have not suffered them to go down to the valley;

35 G li Amorei erano risoluti a restare sul monte Heres, ad Ajalon e a Shaalbim; ma quando la mano della casa di Giuseppe si rafforzò, essi furono sottoposti a servitú.

and the Amorite is desirous to dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, and the hand of the house of Joseph is heavy, and they become tributary;

36 I l confine degli Amorei si estendeva dalla salita di Akrabbim da Sela in su.

and the border of the Amorite from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock and upward.
