1 M a i profeti Aggeo e Zaccaria, figlio di Iddo, profetizzarono ai Giudei che erano in Giuda e a Gerusalemme nel nome del Dio d'Israele, che era su di loro.

And prophesied have the prophets, (Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah son of Iddo) unto the Jews who in Judah and in Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel -- unto them.

2 A llora Zorobabel, figlio di Scealtiel, e Jeshua, figlio di Jotsadak, si levarono e cominciarono a costruire la casa di Dio a Gerusalemme; e con essi erano i profeti di Dio, che li aiutavano.

Then have Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua son of Jozadak, risen, and begun to build the house of God, that in Jerusalem, and with them are the prophets of God supporting them.

3 I n quel tempo giunsero da loro Tattenai, governatore della regione oltre il Fiume, Scethar-Boznai e i loro colleghi e parlarono loro cosí: «Chi vi ha dato ordine di edificare questo tempio, e di ricostruire queste mura?».

At that time come to them hath Tatnai, governor beyond the river, and Shethar-Boznai, and their companions, and thus they are saying to them, `Who hath made for you a decree this house to build, and this wall to finish?'

4 P oi noi dicemmo loro quali erano i nomi degli uomini che costruivano questo edificio.

Then thus we have said to them, `What the names of the men who are building this building?'

5 M a sugli anziani dei Giudei vegliava l'occhio del loro Dio; e quelli non poterono farli smettere finché non fosse inviato a Dario un rapporto e non venisse una risposta in merito.

And the eye of their God hath been upon the elders of the Jews, and they have not caused them to cease till the matter goeth to Darius, and then they send back a letter concerning this thing.

6 Q uesta è una copia della lettera mandata al re Dario da Tattenai, governatore della regione oltre il Fiume, da Scethar-Boznai e dai suoi colleghi, gli Afarsekiti, che erano oltre il Fiume.

The copy of a letter that Tatnai, governor beyond the river, hath sent, and Shethar-Boznai and his companions, the Apharsachites who beyond the river, unto Darius the king.

7 G li inviarono una lettera scritta in questo modo: «Al re Dario, perfetta salute!

A letter they have sent unto him, and thus is it written in it:

8 S ia noto al re che noi siamo andati nella provincia di Giuda, al tempio del grande Dio. Esso viene costruito con grosse pietre e mettendo legname nelle pareti. Questo lavoro viene fatto con cura e procede bene nelle loro mani.

`To Darius the king, all peace! be it known to the king that we have gone to the province of Judah, to the great house of God, and it is built rolled stones, and wood is placed in the walls, and this work is done speedily, and prospering in their hand.

9 N oi abbiamo interrogato quegli anziani e abbiamo parlato loro cosí: "Chi vi ha dato ordine di edificare questo tempio e di costruire queste mura?".

Then we have asked of these elders, thus we have said to them, Who hath made for you a decree this house to build, and this wall to finish?

10 A bbiamo anche loro chiesto i loro nomi, perché potessimo mettere per scritto i nomi degli uomini che stanno loro a capo, e quindi farteli conoscere.

And also their names we have asked of them, to let thee know, that we might write the names of the men who at their head.

11 E d essi ci hanno cosí risposto, dicendo: "Noi siamo i servi del Dio del cielo e della terra e riedifichiamo il tempio che era stato edificato molti anni fa; un grande re d'Israele l'aveva edificato e portato a termine.

`And thus they have returned us word, saying, We servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was built many years before this, that a great king of Israel built and finished:

12 A vendo però i nostri padri provocato ad ira il Dio del cielo, egli li diede in mano di Nebukadnetsar, re di Babilonia, il Caldeo, il quale distrusse questo tempio e deportò il popolo a Babilonia.

but after that our fathers made the God of heaven angry, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon the Chaldean, and this house he destroyed, and the people he removed to Babylon;

13 M a nel primo anno di Ciro, re di Babilonia, il re Ciro diede ordine di costruire questa casa a Dio.

but in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God,

14 I noltre il re Ciro tirò fuori dal tempio di Babilonia gli utensili d'oro e d'argento della casa di Dio, che Nebukadnetsar aveva tolto dal tempio di Gerusalemme e portato nel tempio di Babilonia, e li fece consegnare a uno chiamato Sceshbatsar, che egli aveva fatto governatore,

and also, the vessels of the house of God, of gold and silver, that Nebuchadnezzar had taken forth out of the temple that in Jerusalem, and brought them to the temple of Babylon, them hath Cyrus the king brought forth out of the temple of Babylon, and they have been given to, Sheshbazzar his name, whom he made governor,

15 d icendogli: Prendi questi utensili e va' a riporli nel tempio che è in Gerusalemme, e la casa di Dio sia riedificata nel suo luogo.

and said to him, These vessels lift up, go, put them down in the temple that in Jerusalem, and the house of God is builded on its place.

16 A llora lo stesso Sceshbatsar venne e gettò le fondamenta della casa di Dio che è in Gerusalemme; da quel tempo fino ad ora essa è in costruzione, ma non è ancora finita".

Then hath this Sheshbazzar come -- he hath laid the foundations of the house of God that in Jerusalem, and from thence even till now it hath been building, and is not finished.

17 P erciò ora, se cosí piace al re, si facciano ricerche nella casa dei tesori del re che è in Babilonia, per vedere se il re Ciro ha veramente emesso un ordine di costruire questa casa di Dio a Gerusalemme; e il re ci faccia pervenire la sua decisione in proposito».

`And now, if to the king it be good, let search be made in the treasure-house of the king, that there in Babylon, whether it be that of Cyrus the king there was made a decree to build this house of God in Jerusalem, and the will of the king concerning this thing he doth send unto us.'
