1 O r il popolo, vedendo che Mosè tardava a scendere dal monte, si radunò intorno ad Aaronne e gli disse: «Orsù, facci un dio che vada davanti a noi, perché quanto a Mosè, l'uomo che ci ha fatto uscire dal paese d'Egitto, non sappiamo che cosa gli sia accaduto».

And the people see that Moses is delaying to come down from the mount, and the people assemble against Aaron, and say unto him, `Rise, make for us gods who go before us, for this Moses -- the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt -- we have not known what hath happened to him.'

2 A aronne rispose loro: «Staccate gli anelli d'oro che sono agli orecchi delle vostre mogli, dei vostri figli e delle vostre figlie e portatemeli».

And Aaron saith unto them, `Break off the rings of gold which in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring in unto me;'

3 C osì tutto i popolo staccò gli anelli d'oro che avevano ai loro orecchi e li portò ad Aaronne,

and all the people themselves break off the rings of gold which in their ears, and bring in unto Aaron,

4 i l quale li prese dalle loro mani e, dopo averlo modellato con il cesello, ne fece un vitello di metallo fuso. Allora essi dissero: «O Israele, questo è il tuo dio che ti ha fatto uscire dal paese d'Egitto!».

and he receiveth from their hand, and doth fashion it with a graving tool, and doth make it a molten calf, and they say, `These thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'

5 Q uando Aaronne vide questo, eresse un altare davanti ad esso e fece un bando che diceva: «Domani sarà festa in onore dell'Eterno!».

And Aaron seeth, and buildeth an altar before it, and Aaron calleth, and saith, `A festival to Jehovah -- to-morrow;'

6 l 'indomani essi si alzarono presto, offrirono olocausti e recarono dei sacrifici di ringraziamento; il popolo si adagiò per mangiare e bere, poi si alzò per divertirsi.

and they rise early on the morrow, and cause burnt-offerings to ascend, and bring nigh peace-offerings; and the people sit down to eat and to drink, and rise up to play.

7 l 'Eterno disse allora a Mosè: «Va

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Go, descend, for thy people whom thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt hath done corruptly,

8 s i sono presto sviati dalla strada che io avevo loro ordinato di seguire; si sono fatti un vitello di metallo fuso, si sono prostrati davanti ad esso, gi hanno offerto sacrifici e hanno detto: "O Israele, questo è il tuo dio che ti ha fatto uscire dal paese d'Egitto"».

they have turned aside hastily from the way that I have commanded them; they have made for themselves a molten calf, and bow themselves to it, and sacrifice to it, and say, These thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.'

9 L 'Eterno disse ancora a Mosè: «Ho visto questo popolo, ed ecco, è un popolo dal collo duro.

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `I have seen this people, and lo, it a stiff-necked people;

10 O r dunque, lasciami fare, affinché la mia ira si accenda contro di loro e li consumi; ma di te io farò una grande nazione».

and now, let Me alone, and My anger doth burn against them, and I consume them, and I make thee become a great nation.'

11 A llora Mosè supplicò l'Eterno, il suo DIO, e disse: «Perché, o Eterno, dovrebbe la tua ira accendersi contro il tuo popolo che hai fatto uscire dal paese d'Egitto con grande potenza e con mano forte?

And Moses appeaseth the face of Jehovah his God, and saith, `Why, O Jehovah, doth Thine anger burn against Thy people, whom Thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a strong hand?

12 P erché dovrebbero gli Egiziani dire: "Egli li ha fatti uscire per fare loro del male, per ucciderli sui monti e per sterminarli dalla faccia della terra"? Desisti dalla tua ira ardente e cambia la tua intenzione di far del male al tuo popolo.

why do the Egyptians speak, saying, For evil He brought them out to slay them among mountains, and to consume them from off the face of the ground? turn back from the heat of Thine anger, and repent of the evil against Thy people.

13 R icordati di Abrahamo, d'Isacco d'Israele, tuoi servi, ai quali giurasti per te stesso, dicendo loro: "Io moltiplicherò la vostra discendenza come le stelle del cielo e darò alla vostra discendenza tutto questo paese di cui ti ho parlato, ed essa lo possederà per sempre"».

`Be mindful of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, Thy servants, to whom Thou hast sworn by Thyself, and unto whom Thou speakest: I multiply your seed as stars of the heavens, and all this land, as I have said, I give to your seed, and they have inherited to the age;'

14 C osì l'Eterno cambiò intenzione circa il male che aveva detto di fare al suo popolo.

and Jehovah repenteth of the evil which He hath spoken of doing to His people.

15 A llora Mosè si voltò e scese dal monte con le due tavole della testimonianza nelle mani, tavole scritte su entrambi i lati, davanti e di dietro.

And Moses turneth, and goeth down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony in his hand, tables written on both their sides, on this and on that they written;

16 L e tavole erano opera di DIO e la scrittura era scrittura di DIO, incisa sulle tavole.

and the tables are the work of God, and the writing is the writing of God, graven on the tables.

17 O r Giosuè, udendo il clamore del popolo che gridava, disse a Mosè: «C'è un rumore di guerra nell'accampamento».

And Joshua heareth the voice of the people in their shouting, and saith unto Moses, `A noise of battle in the camp!'

18 M a egli rispose: «Questo non né un grido di vittoria, né un grido di sconfitta; il clamore che io odo è di gente che canta».

and he saith, `It is not the voice of the crying of might, nor is it the voice of the crying of weakness -- a voice of singing I am hearing.'

19 C ome fu vicino all'accampamento, vide il vitello e le danze; allora l'ira di Mosè si accese ed egli gettò dalle mani le tavole e le spezzò ai piedi del monte.

And it cometh to pass, when he hath drawn near unto the camp, that he seeth the calf, and the dancing, and the anger of Moses burneth, and he casteth out of his hands the tables, and breaketh them under the mount;

20 P oi prese il vitello che essi avevano fatto, lo bruciò col fuoco e lo ridusse in polvere; e sparse la polvere sull'acqua e la fece bere ai figli d'Israele.

and he taketh the calf which they have made, and burneth with fire, and grindeth until small, and scattereth on the face of the waters, and causeth the sons of Israel to drink.

21 Q uindi Mosè disse ad Aaronne: «Che ti ha fatto questo popolo, che gli hai tirato addosso un così grande peccato?».

And Moses saith unto Aaron, `What hath this people done to thee, that thou hast brought in upon it a great sin?'

22 A aronne rispose: «L'ira del mio signore non si accenda, tu stesso conosci questo popolo e sai che è inclinato al male.

and Aaron saith, `Let not the anger of my lord burn; thou -- thou hast known the people that it in evil;

23 E ssi mi hanno detto: "Facci un dio che vada davanti a noi, perché Mosè, l'uomo che ci ha fatto uscire dal paese d'Egitto, non sappiamo che cosa sia avvenuto di lui".

and they say to me, Make for us gods, who go before us, for this Moses -- the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt -- we have not known what hath happened to him;

24 A llora io ho detto loro: "Chi ha dell'oro se lo levi di dosso". Così essi me l'hanno dato, io l'ho gettato nel fuoco, e ne è uscito fuori questo vitello».

and I say to them, Whoso hath gold, let them break off, and they give to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf cometh out.'

25 Q uando Mosè vide che il popolo era senza freno (e che Aaronne lo aveva lasciato sfrenare esponendolo all'obbrobrio dei suoi nemici),

And Moses seeth the people that it unbridled, for Aaron hath made it unbridled for contempt among its withstanders,

26 s i fermò all'ingresso dell'accampamento e disse: «Chiunque è per l'Eterno, venga a me!». E tutti i figli di Levi si radunarono vicino a lui.

and Moses standeth in the gate of the camp, and saith, `Who for Jehovah? -- unto me!' and all the sons of Levi are gathered unto him;

27 E d egli disse loro: «Così dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: "Ognuno di voi si metta la spada a fianco; passate e ripassate da un'entrata all'atra dell'accampamento, e ciascuno uccida il fratello, ciascuno l'amico, ciascuno il vicino!"».

and he saith to them, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, Put each his sword by his thigh, pass over and turn back from gate to gate through the camp, and slay each his brother, and each his friend, and each his relation.'

28 I figli di Levi fecero come aveva detto Mosè, e in quel giorno caddero circa tremila uomini.

And the sons of Levi do according to the word of Moses, and there fall of the people on that day about three thousand men,

29 P oi Mosè disse: «Consacratevi oggi all'Eterno, affinché egli vi dia una benedizione, perché ognuno di voi è stato contro suo figlio e contro suo fratello».

and Moses saith, `Consecrate your hand to-day to Jehovah, for a man against his son, and against his brother, so as to bring on you to-day a blessing.'

30 L 'indomani Mosè disse al popolo: «Voi avete commesso un grande peccato; ma ora io salirò all'Eterno; forse potrò fare espiazione per il vostro peccato».

And it cometh to pass, on the morrow, that Moses saith unto the people, `Ye -- ye have sinned a great sin, and now I go up unto Jehovah, if so be I atone for your sin.'

31 M osè dunque ritornò dall'Eterno e disse: «Ahimè, questo popolo ha commesso un grande peccato e si è fatto un dio d'oro.

And Moses turneth back unto Jehovah, and saith, `Oh this people hath sinned a great sin, that they make to themselves a god of gold;

32 C iò nonostante ora, ti prego, perdona il loro peccato; se no deh, cancellami dal tuo libro che hai scritto!».

and now, if Thou takest away their sin -- and if not -- blot me, I pray thee, out of Thy book which Thou hast written.'

33 M a l'Eterno rispose a Mosè: «Colui che ha peccato contro di me, quello cancellerò dal mio libro!

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Whoso hath sinned against Me -- I blot him out of My book;

34 O ra va' conduci il popolo dove ti ho detto. Ecco, il mio Angelo andrá davanti a te, ma nel giorno che verrò a punire io li punirò del loro peccato».

and now, go, lead the people whithersoever I have spoken to thee of; lo, My messenger goeth before thee, and in the day of my charging -- then I have charged upon them their sin.'

35 C osì l'Eterno percosse il popolo, perché aveva fatto il vitello che Aaronne aveva modellato

And Jehovah plagueth the people, because they made the calf which Aaron made.
