1 C osí giunsero all'altra riva del mare, nel paese dei Gadareni.

And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gadarenes,

2 E , come Gesú scese dalla barca, subito gli venne incontro dai sepolcri un uomo posseduto da uno spirito immondo,

and he having come forth out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

3 i l quale aveva la sua dimora fra i sepolcri, e nessuno riusciva a tenerlo legato neanche con catene.

who had his dwelling in the tombs, and not even with chains was any one able to bind him,

4 I nfatti piú volte era stato legato con ceppi e con catene; ma egli aveva sempre spezzato le catene e infranto i ceppi; e nessuno era riuscito a domarlo.

because that he many times with fetters and chains had been bound, and pulled in pieces by him had been the chains, and the fetters broken in pieces, and none was able to tame him,

5 C ontinuamente, notte e giorno, fra i sepolcri e su per i monti, andava gridando e picchiandosi con pietre.

and always, night and day, in the mountains, and in the tombs he was, crying and cutting himself with stones.

6 O ra, quando vide Gesú da lontano, egli accorse e gli si prostrò davanti,

And, having seen Jesus from afar, he ran and bowed before him,

7 e dando un gran grido, disse: «Che c'è fra me e te, Gesú Figlio del Dio altissimo? Io ti scongiuro, in nome di Dio, di non tormentarmi!».

and having called with a loud voice, he said, `What -- to me and to thee, Jesus, Son of God the Most High? I adjure thee by God, mayest thou not afflict me!'

8 P erché egli gli diceva: «Spirito immondo, esci da quest'uomo!».

(for he said to him, `Come forth, spirit unclean, out of the man,')

9 P oi Gesú gli domandò: «Qual è il tuo nome?». E quello rispose, dicendo: «Io mi chiamo Legione, perché siamo molti».

and he was questioning him, `What thy name?' and he answered, saying, `Legion my name, because we are many;'

10 E lo supplicava con insistenza perché non li mandasse fuori da quella regione.

and he was calling on him much, that he may not send them out of the region.

11 O r vi era là, sul pendio del monte, un grande branco di porci che pascolava.

And there was there, near the mountains, a great herd of swine feeding,

12 A llora tutti i demoni lo pregarono, dicendo: «Mandaci nei porci, perché entriamo in essi».

and all the demons did call upon him, saying, `Send us to the swine, that into them we may enter;'

13 E Gesú prontamente lo permise loro; allora gli spiriti immondi, usciti, entrarono nei porci e il branco si precipitò giú per il dirupo nel mare, erano circa duemila, e affogarono nel mare.

and immediately Jesus gave them leave, and having come forth, the unclean spirits did enter into the swine, and the herd did rush down the steep place to the sea -- and they were about two thousand -- and they were choked in the sea.

14 A llora quelli che custodivano i porci fuggirono e diffusero la notizia in città e per le campagne; e la gente venne a vedere ciò che era accaduto.

And those feeding the swine did flee, and told in the city, and in the fields, and they came forth to see what it is that hath been done;

15 G iunti che furono da Gesú, videro l'indemoniato seduto, vestito e sano di mente, lui che era stato posseduto dalla Legione, ed ebbero paura.

and they come unto Jesus, and see the demoniac, sitting, and clothed, and right-minded -- him having had the legion -- and they were afraid;

16 E quelli che avevano visto l'accaduto, raccontarono loro ciò che era successo all'indemoniato e il fatto dei porci.

and those having seen, declared to them how it had come to pass to the demoniac, and about the swine;

17 A llora essi cominciarono a pregarlo che se ne andasse dal loro territorio.

and they began to call upon him to go away from their borders.

18 M entre egli saliva sulla barca, colui che era stato indemoniato lo pregava di poter rimanere con lui

And he having gone into the boat, the demoniac was calling on him that he may be with him,

19 m a Gesú non glielo permise; gli disse invece: «Va' a casa tua dai tuoi e racconta loro quali grandi cose il Signore ti ha fatto e come ha avuto pietà di te».

and Jesus did not suffer him, but saith to him, `Go away to thy house, unto thine own, and tell them how great things the Lord did to thee, and dealt kindly with thee;

20 E gli se ne andò e cominciò a predicare per la Decapoli tutto quanto Gesú gli aveva fatto; tutti restavano meravigliati.

and he went away, and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how great things Jesus did to him, and all were wondering.

21 E , quando Gesú passò nuovamente all'altra riva in barca, una grande folla si radunò intorno a lui; ed egli se ne stava in riva al mare.

And Jesus having passed over in the boat again to the other side, there was gathered a great multitude to him, and he was near the sea,

22 A llora venne uno dei capi della sinagoga, di nome Iairo, il quale vedutolo, gli si gettò ai piedi,

and lo, there doth come one of the chiefs of the synagogue, by name Jairus, and having seen him, he doth fall at his feet,

23 e lo pregò con molta insistenza, dicendo: «La mia figliola è agli estremi; vieni a imporle le mani, affinché sia guarita e viva».

and he was calling upon him much, saying -- `My little daughter is at the last extremity -- that having come, thou mayest lay on her hands, so that she may be saved, and she shall live;'

24 E d egli se ne andò con lui. Una grande folla lo seguiva e gli si stringeva intorno.

and he went away with him. And there was following him a great multitude, and they were thronging him,

25 O ra una donna che aveva un flusso di sangue già da dodici anni

and a certain woman, having an issue of blood twelve years,

26 e aveva molto sofferto da parte di parecchi medici, spendendo tutti i suoi averi senza alcun giovamento, anzi piuttosto peggiorando,

and many things having suffered under many physicians, and having spent all that she had, and having profited nothing, but rather having come to the worse,

27 a vendo sentito parlare di Gesú, venne tra la folla alle sue spalle e toccò il suo vestito,

having heard about Jesus, having come in the multitude behind, she touched his garment,

28 p oiché diceva: «Se solo tocco le sue vesti sarò guarita».

for she said -- `If even his garments I may touch, I shall be saved;'

29 E immediatamente il flusso del suo sangue si stagnò, ed ella sentí nel suo corpo di essere guarita da quel male.

and immediately was the fountain of her blood dried up, and she knew in the body that she hath been healed of the plague.

30 M a subito Gesú, avvertendo in se stesso che una potenza era uscita da lui, voltatosi nella folla, disse: «Chi mi ha toccato i vestiti?».

And immediately Jesus having known in himself that out of him power had gone forth, having turned about in the multitude, said, `Who did touch my garments?'

31 E i suoi discepoli gli dissero: «Non vedi che la folla ti stringe da ogni parte e tu dici: "chi mi ha toccato?"».

and his disciples said to him, `Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and thou sayest, `Who did touch me!'

32 M a egli guardava intorno per vedere colei che aveva fatto ciò.

And he was looking round to see her who did this,

33 A llora la donna, paurosa e tremante, sapendo quanto era avvenuto in lei, venne e gli si gettò ai piedi e gli disse tutta la verità.

and the woman, having been afraid, and trembling, knowing what was done on her, came, and fell down before him, and told him all the truth,

34 M a egli le disse: «Figliola, la tua fede ti ha guarita; va' in pace e sii guarita dal tuo male».

and he said to her, `Daughter, thy faith hath saved thee; go away in peace, and be whole from thy plague.'

35 M entre egli stava ancora parlando, vennero alcuni dalla casa del capo della sinagoga, dicendo: «La tua figlia è morta; perché importuni ancora il Maestro?».

As he is yet speaking, there come from the chief of the synagogue's, saying -- `Thy daughter did die, why still dost thou harass the Teacher?'

36 M a Gesú, appena intese ciò che si diceva, disse al capo della sinagoga: «Non temere, credi solamente!».

And Jesus immediately, having heard the word that is spoken, saith to the chief of the synagogue, `Be not afraid, only believe.'

37 E non permise che alcuno lo seguisse, all'infuori di Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni, fratello di Giacomo.

And he did not suffer any one to follow with him, except Peter, and James, and John the brother of James;

38 E , giunto a casa del capo della sinagoga, vide un gran trambusto e gente che piangeva e urlava forte.

and he cometh to the house of the chief of the synagogue, and seeth a tumult, much weeping and wailing;

39 E d entrato, disse loro: «Perché fate tanto chiasso e piangete? La fanciulla non è morta, ma dorme»,

and having gone in he saith to them, `Why do ye make a tumult, and weep? the child did not die, but doth sleep;

40 E quelli lo deridevano, ma egli, messili tutti fuori, prese con sé il padre, la madre della fanciulla e coloro che erano con lui, ed entrò là dove giaceva la fanciulla.

and they were laughing at him. And he, having put all forth, doth take the father of the child, and the mother, and those with him, and goeth in where the child is lying,

41 Q uindi presa la fanciulla per mano, le disse: «Talitha cumi»; che tradotto vuol dire: «Fanciulla, ti dico: Alzati!».

and, having taken the hand of the child, he saith to her, `Talitha cumi;' which is, being interpreted, `Damsel (I say to thee), arise.'

42 E subito la fanciulla si alzò e si mise a camminare; ella aveva infatti dodici anni. Ed essi furono presi da un grande stupore.

And immediately the damsel arose, and was walking, for she was twelve years; and they were amazed with a great amazement,

43 M a egli comandò loro con fermezza che nessuno lo venisse a sapere; poi ordinò che si desse da mangiare alla fanciulla.

and he charged them much, that no one may know this thing, and he said that there be given to her to eat.
