1 O r questi sono i nomi dei figli d'Israele che vennero in Egitto con Giacobbe. Ciascuno di loro venne con la sua famiglia:

And these the names of the sons of Israel who are coming into Egypt with Jacob; a man and his household have they come;

2 R uben, Simeone, Levi e Giuda,

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

3 I ssacar, Zabulon e Beniamino,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

4 D an e Neftali, Gad e Ascer.

Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

5 T utte le persone che erano uscite dai lombi di Giacobbe ammontavano a settanta (Giuseppe era già in Egitto).

And all the persons coming out of the thigh of Jacob are seventy persons; as to Joseph, he was in Egypt.

6 Q uindi Giuseppe morì, e così morirono tutti i suoi fratelli e tutta quella generazione.

And Joseph dieth, and all his brethren, and all that generation;

7 E i figli d'Israele furono fruttiferi, moltiplicarono copiosamente e divennero numerosi e si fecero straordinariamente forti; e il paese ne fu ripieno.

and the sons of Israel have been fruitful, and they teem, and multiply, and are very very mighty, and the land is filled with them.

8 O r sorse sopra l'Egitto un nuovo re, che non aveva conosciuto Giuseppe.

And there riseth a new king over Egypt, who hath not known Joseph,

9 E gli disse al suo popolo: Ecco, il popolo dei figli d'Israele è piú numeroso e piú forte di noi.

and he saith unto his people, `Lo, the people of the sons of Israel more numerous and mighty than we;

10 O rsù, usiamo astuzia nei loro confronti, perché non si moltiplichino e, in caso di guerra non abbiano a unirsi ai nostri nemici e combattere contro di noi, e poi andarsene dal paese».

give help! let us act wisely concerning it, lest it multiply, and it hath come to pass, when war happeneth, that it hath been joined, even it, unto those hating us, and hath fought against us, and hath gone out up of the land.'

11 S tabilirono dunque su di loro dei sovrintendenti ai lavori, che li opprimessero con le loro angherie. Così essi costruirono al Faraone le città-deposito, Pithom e Raamses.

And they set over it princes of tribute, so as to afflict it with their burdens, and it buildeth store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses;

12 M a piú li opprimevano, piú essi moltiplicavano e si estendevano; per questo gli Egiziani giunsero a temere grandemente i figli d'Israele,

and as they afflict it, so it multiplieth, and so it breaketh forth, and they are vexed because of the sons of Israel;

13 e gli Egiziani costrinsero i figli d'Israele a servire con asprezza,

and the Egyptians cause the sons of Israel to serve with rigour,

14 e amareggiarono la loro vita con una dura schiavitú, nei lavori d'argilla e di mattoni e in ogni sorta di lavori nei campi. Li obbligavano a fare tutti questi lavori con asprezza.

and make their lives bitter in hard service, in clay, and in brick, and in every of service in the field; all their service in which they have served with rigour.

15 I l re d'Egitto parlò anche alle levatrici ebree, delle quali una si chiamava Scifrah e l'altra si chiamava Puah, e disse:

And the king of Egypt speaketh to the midwives, the Hebrewesses, (of whom the name of the one Shiphrah, and the name of the second Puah),

16 « Quando assisterete le donne ebree partorienti, e le vedrete sul sedile del parto, se è un maschio, uccidetelo; ma se è una femmina, lasciatela vivere».

and saith, `When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it a son -- then ye have put him to death; and if it a daughter -- then she hath lived.'

17 M a le levatrici ebbero timore di DIO e non fecero come il re d'Egitto aveva loro comandato, e lasciarono in vita i bambini maschi.

And the midwives fear God, and have not done as the king of Egypt hath spoken unto them, and keep the lads alive;

18 A llora il re d'Egitto chiamò le levatrici e disse loro: «Perché avete fatto questo e avete lasciato in vita i bambini maschi?».

and the king of Egypt calleth for the midwives, and saith to them, `Wherefore have ye done this thing, and keep the lads alive?'

19 L e levatrici risposero al Faraone: «Perché le donne ebree non sono come le egiziane, ma sono vigorose e, prima che la levatrice arrivi da loro, hanno già partorito».

And the midwives say unto Pharaoh, `Because the Hebrew women not as the Egyptian women, for they lively; before the midwife cometh in unto them -- they have borne!'

20 O r DIO fece del bene a quelle levatrici; e il popolo moltiplicò e divenne straordinariamente forte.

And God doth good to the midwives, and the people multiply, and are very mighty;

21 C osì, perché quelle levatrici temevano DIO, egli diede loro famiglie in proprio.

and it cometh to pass, because the midwives have feared God, that He maketh for them households;

22 A llora il Faraone diede quest'ordine a tutto il suo popolo dicendo: «Ogni maschio che nasce, gettatelo nel fiume; ma lasciate in vita tutte le femmine».

and Pharaoh layeth a charge on all his people, saying, `Every son who is born -- into the River ye do cast him, and every daughter ye do keep alive.'
