1 T rascorsero tre anni senza guerra, tra la Siria e Israele.

And they sit still three years, there is no war between Aram and Israel,

2 M a il terzo anno Giosafat, re di Giuda, scese a trovare il re d'Israele.

and it cometh to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat king of Judah cometh down unto the king of Israel,

3 O ra il re d'Israele aveva detto ai suoi servi: «Non sapete voi che Ramoth di Galaad è nostra e noi ce ne stiamo tranquilli, senza riprenderla dalle mani del re di Siria?»

and the king of Israel saith unto his servants, `Have ye not known that ours Ramoth-Gilead? and we are keeping silent from taking it out of the hand of the king of Aram!'

4 D isse quindi a Giosafat: «Verresti a combattere con me a Ramoth di Galaad?». Giosafat rispose al re d'Israele «Conta su di me come su te stesso, sulla mia gente come sulla tua gente, sui miei cavalli come sui tuoi cavalli».

And he saith unto Jehoshaphat, `Dost thou go with me to battle Ramoth-Gilead?' and Jehoshaphat saith unto the king of Israel, `As I am, so thou; as my people, so thy people; as my horses, so thy horses.'

5 G iosafat disse ancora al re d'Israele: «Ti prego, consulta oggi stesso la parola dell'Eterno».

And Jehoshaphat saith unto the king of Israel, `Seek, I pray thee, to-day, the word of Jehovah;'

6 A llora il re d'Israele convocò i profeti, in numero di circa quattrocento, e disse loro: «Devo andare a combattere contro Ramoth di Galaad, oppure devo rinunciarvi?». Quelli risposero: «Va'pure, perché il Signore la darà nelle mani del re».

and the king of Israel gathereth the prophets, about four hundred men, and saith unto them, `Do I go against Ramoth-Gilead to battle, or do I forbear?' and they say, `Go up, and the Lord doth give into the hand of the king.'

7 M a Giosafat disse: «Non c'è qui un altro profeta dell'Eterno? che possiamo consultare?».

And Jehoshaphat saith, `Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah besides, and we seek by him?'

8 I l re d'Israele rispose a Giosafat: «C'è ancora un uomo, Mikaiah, figlio di Imlah, per mezzo del quale si potrebbe consultare l'Eterno; io però lo odio perché non profetizza mai nulla di buono nei miei confronti ma soltanto del male». Giosafat rispose: «Il re non parli cosí!».

And the king of Israel saith unto Jehoshaphat, `Yet -- one man to seek Jehovah by him, and I have hated him, for he doth not prophesy concerning me good, but evil -- Micaiah son of Imlah;' and Jehoshaphat saith, `Let not the king say so.'

9 A llora il re d'Israele chiamò un eunuco e gli disse: «Fa' venire subito Mikaiah, figlio di Imlah».

And the king of Israel calleth unto a certain eunuch, and saith, `Hasten Micaiah son of Imlah.'

10 O r il re d'Israele e Giosafat, re di Giuda, sedevano ciascuno sul suo trono vestiti dei loro abiti reali, nell'aia che si trova all'ingresso della porta di Samaria; e tutti i profeti profetizzavano davanti a loro.

And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah are sitting, each on his throne, clothed with garments, in a threshing-floor, at the opening of the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets are prophesying before them.

11 S edekia, figlio di Kenaanah, che si era fatto delle corna di ferro, disse: «Cosí dice l'Eterno: "Con queste corna trafiggerai i Siri fino a distruggerli completamente"».

And Zedekiah son of Chenaanah maketh for himself horns of iron, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, By these thou dost push the Aramaeans till they are consumed;'

12 T utti i profeti profetizzavano allo stesso modo, dicendo: «Sali contro Ramoth di Galaad e riuscirai, perché l'Eterno la darà nelle mani del re».

and all the prophets are prophesying so, saying, `Go up to Ramoth-Gilead, and prosper, and Jehovah hath given into the hand of the king.'

13 I l messaggero che era andato a chiamare Mikaiah gli parlò cosí e disse: «Ecco, le parole dei profeti sono concordi nel dichiarare cose buone al re; ti prego sia la tua parola come la parola di ognuno di loro, e dichiara anche tu cose buone».

And the messenger who hath gone to call Micaiah hath spoken unto him, saying, `Lo, I pray thee, the words of the prophets, with one mouth, good towards the king; let it be, I pray thee, thy word as the word of one of them -- and thou hast spoken good.'

14 M a Mikaiah rispose: «Com 'è vero che l'Eterno vive, io dirò ciò che l'Eterno mi dirà».

And Micaiah saith, `Jehovah liveth; surely that which Jehovah saith unto me -- it I speak.'

15 C ome giunse davanti al re, il re gli disse: «Mikaiah, dobbiamo andare a combattere contro Ramoth di Galaad, oppure dobbiamo rinunciarvi?». Egli rispose: «Va' pure, tu riuscirai, perché l'Eterno la darà nelle mani del re».

And he cometh in unto the king, and the king saith unto him, `Micaiah, do we go unto Ramoth-Gilead, to battle, or do we forbear?' and he saith unto him, `Go up, and prosper, and Jehovah hath given into the hand of the king.'

16 A llora il re gli disse: «Quante volte ti devo scongiurare di non dirmi se non la verità nel nome dell'Eterno?».

And the king saith unto him, `How many times am I adjuring thee that thou speak nothing unto me but truth in the name of Jehovah?'

17 M ikaiah rispose: «Ho visto tutto Israele disperso sui monti, come pecore che non hanno pastore"; e l'Eterno ha detto: "Essi non hanno piú padrone; se ne torni ciascuno in pace a casa sua"».

And he saith, `I have seen all Israel scattered on the hills as sheep that have no shepherd, and Jehovah saith, These have no master; they turn back each to his house in peace.'

18 I l re d'Israele disse a Giosafat: «Non ti avevo io detto che nei miei confronti costui non avrebbe profetizzato nulla di buono? ma solo del male?».

And the king of Israel saith unto Jehoshaphat, `Have I not said unto thee, He doth not prophesy of me good, but evil?'

19 A llora Mikaiah disse: «Perciò ascolta la parola dell'Eterno. Io ho visto l'Eterno assiso sul suo trono, mentre tutto l'esercito del cielo gli stava intorno a destra e a sinistra.

And he saith, `Therefore, hear a word of Jehovah; I have seen Jehovah sitting on His throne, and all the host of the heavens standing by Him, on His right and on His left;

20 L 'Eterno disse: "Chi sedurrà Achab perché salga e perisca a Ramoth di Galaad?". Ora chi rispose in un modo e chi in un altro.

and Jehovah saith, Who doth entice Ahab, and he doth go up and fall in Ramoth-Gilead? and this one saith thus, and that one is saying thus.

21 A llora si fece avanti uno spirito, che si presentò davanti all'Eterno e disse: "Lo sedurrò io".

`And the spirit goeth out, and standeth before Jehovah, and saith, I -- I do entice him; and Jehovah saith unto him, By what?

22 L 'Eterno gli disse: "In che modo?". Egli rispose: "Uscirò e sarò spirito di menzogna in bocca a tutti i suoi profeti". L'Eterno gli disse: "Riuscirai certamente a sedurlo; esci e fa' cosí".

and he saith, I go out, and have been a spirit of falsehood in the mouth of all his prophets; and He saith, Thou dost entice, and also thou art able; go out and do so.

23 P erciò ecco, l'Eterno ha posto uno spirito di menzogna in bocca a tutti questi tuoi profeti; ma l'Eterno pronuncia sciagura contro di te».

And now, lo, Jehovah hath put a spirit of falsehood in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and Jehovah hath spoken concerning thee -- evil.'

24 A llora Sedekia, figlio di Kenaanah, si avvicinò e diede uno schiaffo a Mikaiah, e disse: «Per dove è passato lo Spirito dell'Eterno quando è uscito da me per parlare a te?».

And Zedekiah son of Chenaanah draweth nigh, and smiteth Micaiah on the cheek, and saith, `Where this -- he hath passed over -- the Spirit of Jehovah -- from me to speak with thee?'

25 M ikaiah rispose: «Lo vedrai il giorno in cui andrai in una stanza interna a nasconderti».

And Micaiah saith, `Lo, thou art seeing on that day, when thou goest in to the innermost chamber to be hidden.'

26 A llora il re d'Israele disse: «Prendi Mikaiah e conducilo da Amon, governatore della città, e da Joas, figlio del re e di' loro:

And the king of Israel saith, `Take Micaiah, and turn him back unto Amon head of the city, and unto Joash son of the king,

27 C osí dice il re: "Mettete costui in prigione e nutritelo con pane e acqua di afflizione, finché ritornerò sano e salvo».

and thou hast said, Thus said the king, Place ye this one in the house of restraint, and cause him to eat bread of oppression, and water of oppression, till my coming in peace.'

28 A llora Mikaiah disse: «Se tu dovessi mai ritornare sano e salvo, significa che l'Eterno non ha parlato per mio mezzo». E aggiunse: «Ascoltate, o voi popoli tutti!».

And Micaiah saith, `If thou at all return in peace -- Jehovah hath not spoken by me;' and he saith, `Hear, O peoples, all of them.'

29 I l re d'Israele e Giosafat, re di Giuda, salirono dunque contro Ramoth di Galaad.

And the king of Israel goeth up, and Jehoshaphat king of Judah, to Ramoth-Gilead.

30 I l re d'Israele disse a Giosafat: «lo mi travestirò e poi andrò a combattere; ma tu indossa i tuoi abiti reali». Cosí il re d'Israele si travestí e andò a combattere.

And the king of Israel saith unto Jehoshaphat to disguise himself, and to go into battle, `And thou, put on thy garments.' And the king of Israel disguiseth himself, and goeth into battle.

31 O ra il re di Siria aveva dato quest'ordine ai trentadue capitani dei suoi carri, dicendo: «Non combattete contro nessuno, piccolo o grande, ma solamente contro il re d'Israele».

And the king of Aram commanded the heads of the charioteers whom he hath -- thirty and two -- saying, `Ye do not fight with small or with great, but with the king of Israel by himself.'

32 C osì, quando i capitani dei carri videro Giosafat, dissero: «Costui è certamente il re d'Israele». E si volsero contro di lui per attaccarlo; ma Giosafat lanciò un grido.

And it cometh to pass, at the heads of the charioteers seeing Jehoshaphat, that they said, `He only the king of Israel;' and they turn aside to him to fight, and Jehoshaphat crieth out,

33 Q uando i capitani dei carri si resero conto che non era il re d'Israele, smisero di inseguirlo.

and it cometh to pass, at the heads of the charioteers seeing that he not the king of Israel, that they turn back from after him.

34 M a un uomo tirò a caso una freccia col suo arco e colpí il re d'Israele tra le maglie della corazza; per cui il re disse al suo cocchiere: «Gira e portami fuori dalla mischia. perché sono ferito».

And a man hath drawn with a bow, in his simplicity, and smiteth the king of Israel between the joinings and the coat of mail, and he saith to his charioteer, `Turn thy hand, and take me out from the camp, for I have become sick.'

35 M a la battaglia fu cosí aspra quel giorno, che il re fu costretto a rimanere sul suo carro di fronte ai Siri, e morì verso sera; il sangue della ferita era colato nel fondo del carro.

And the battle increaseth on that day, and the king hath been caused to stand in the chariot, over-against Aram, and he dieth in the evening, and the blood of the wound runneth out unto the midst of the chariot,

36 C ome il sole tramontava, un grido corse attraverso le file dell'esercito: «Ognuno alla sua città, ognuno al suo paese!».

and he causeth the cry to pass over through the camp, at the going in of the sun, saying, `Each unto his city, and each unto his land.'

37 C osí il re morí e fu portato a Samaria; quindi seppellirono il re in Samaria.

And the king dieth, and cometh into Samaria, and they bury the king in Samaria;

38 L avarono poi il carro e le armi a una piscina in Samaria e i cani leccarono il suo sangue secondo la parola che l'Eterno aveva pronunciato.

and rinseth the chariot by the pool of Samaria, and the dogs lick his blood -- when the armour they had washed -- according to the word of Jehovah that He spake.

39 I l resto delle gesta di Achab, tutto ciò che fece, la casa d'avorio che costruí e tutte le città che edificò, non sono forse scritti nel libro delle Cronache dei re d'Israele?

And the rest of the matters of Ahab, and all that he did, and the house of ivory that he built, and all the cities that he built, are they not written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

40 C osì Achab si addormentò con i suoi padri. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Achaziah.

And Ahab lieth with his fathers, and Ahaziah his son reigneth in his stead.

41 G iosafat, figlio di Asa, iniziò a regnare su Giuda l'anno quarto di Achab, re d'Israele.

And Jehoshaphat son of Asa hath reigned over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel,

42 G iosafat aveva trentacinque anni quando iniziò a regnare, e regnò venticinque anni a Gerusalemme. Il nome di sua madre era Azubah, figlia di Scilhi.

Jehoshaphat a son of thirty and five years in his reigning, and twenty and five years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother Azubah daughter of Shilhi.

43 E gli seguí in tutto le vie di Asa suo padre e non se ne allontanò facendo ciò che è giusto agli occhi dell'Eterno. Tuttavia gli alti luoghi non furono rimossi; così il popolo offriva ancora sacrifici e bruciava incenso sugli alti luoghi.

And he walketh in all the way of Asa his father, he hath not turned aside from it, to do that which right in the eyes of Jehovah; only the high places have not turned aside, yet are the people sacrificing and making perfume in high places.

44 E Giosafat visse in pace con il re d'Israele.

And Jehoshaphat maketh peace with the king of Israel;

45 I l resto delle gesta di Giosafat, le prodezze che fece e le sue guerre non sono forse scritte nel libro delle Cronache dei re di Giuda?

and the rest of the matters of Jehoshaphat, and his might that he got, and with which he fought, are they not written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Judah?

46 E gli eliminò dal paese il resto di quelli che si davano alla prostituzione sacra che erano rimasti al tempo di Asa suo padre.

And the remnant of the whoremongers who were left in the days of Asa his father he took away out of the land;

47 A quel tempo non c'era alcun re in Edom, ma solo un rappresentante del re.

and there is no king in Edom; he set up a king.

48 G iosafat fece costruire navi di Tarshish per andare a Ofir in cerca d'oro; ma non riuscirono mai a salpare perché le navi andarono distrutte a Etsion-Gheber.

Jehoshaphat made ships at Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold, and they went not, for the ships were broken in Ezion-Geber.

49 A llora Achaziah, figlio di Achab disse a Giosafat: «Lascia che i miei servi vadano sulle navi con i tuoi servi». Ma Giosafat non volle.

Then said Ahaziah son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat, `Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships;' and Jehoshaphat was not willing.

50 G iosafat si addormentò con i suoi padri e con essi fu sepolto nella città di Davide, suo padre. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Jehoram.

And Jehoshaphat lieth with his fathers, and is buried with his fathers in the city of David his father, and Jehoram his son reigneth in his stead.

51 A chaziah, figlio di Achab, iniziò a regnare su Israele a Samaria l'anno diciassettesimo di Giosafat, re di Giuda, e regnò due anni su Israele.

Ahaziah son of Ahab hath reigned over Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigneth over Israel two years,

52 E gli fece ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno e seguí la via di suo padre, la via di sua madre e la via di Geroboamo figlio di Nebat, che aveva fatto peccare Israele.

and doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and walketh in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam son of Nebat who caused Israel to sin,

53 S erví a Baal e si prostrò davanti a lui, provocando ad ira l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, proprio come aveva fatto suo padre.

and serveth the Baal, and boweth himself to it, and provoketh Jehovah, God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.
