1 I l re Belshatsar fece un gran banchetto a mille dei suoi grandi e in presenza dei mille bevve vino.

Belshazzar the king hath made a great feast to a thousand of his great men, and before the thousand he is drinking wine;

2 M entre degustava il vino, Belshatsar ordinò di far portare i vasi d'oro e d'argento che suo padre Nebukadnetsar aveva portato via dal tempio, che era in Gerusalemme, perché in essi bevessero il re e i suoi grandi, le sue mogli e le sue concubine.

Belshazzar hath said -- while tasting the wine -- to bring in the vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken from the temple that in Jerusalem, that drink with them may the king, and his great men, his wives, and his concubines.

3 C osí si portarono i vasi d'oro che erano stati portati via dal santuario del tempio di Dio, che era in Gerusalemme, e in essi bevvero il re e i suoi grandi, le sue mogli e le sue concubine.

Then they have brought in the vessels of gold that had been taken out of the temple of the house of God that in Jerusalem, and drunk with them have the king and his great men, his wives and his concubines;

4 B evvero vino e lodarono gli dèi d'oro, d'argento, di bronzo, di ferro, di legno e di pietra.

they have drunk wine, and have praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

5 I n quel momento apparvero le dita di una mano d'uomo, che si misero a scrivere di fronte al candelabro sull'intonaco della parete del palazzo reale; e il re vide la parte di quella mano che scriveva.

In that hour come forth have fingers of a man's hand, and they are writing over-against the candlestick, on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and the king is seeing the extremity of the hand that is writing;

6 A llora l'aspetto del re cambiò e i suoi pensieri lo turbarono, le giunture dei suoi lombi, si allentarono e i suoi ginocchi battevano l'uno contro l'altro.

then the king's countenance hath changed, and his thoughts do trouble him, and the joints of his loins are loosed, and his knees are smiting one against another.

7 I l re gridò con forza di fare entrare gli astrologi, i Caldei e gli indovini, quindi il re prese a dire ai savi di Babilonia: «Chiunque leggerà questa scritta e mi darà la sua interpretazione sarà rivestito di porpora, porterà una collana d'oro al collo e sarà terzo nel governo del regno».

Call doth the king mightily, to bring up the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. Answered hath the king, and said to the wise men of Babylon, that, `Any man who doth read this writing, and its interpretation doth shew me, purple he putteth on, and a bracelet of gold on his neck, and third in the kingdom he doth rule.'

8 A llora entrarono tutti i savi del re, ma non poterono leggere la scritta né far conoscere al re la sua interpretazione;

Then coming up are all the wise men of the king, and they are not able to read the writing, and the interpretation to make known to the king;

9 A llora il re Belshatsar fu grandemente turbato, il suo aspetto cambiò e i suoi grandi furono smarriti.

then the king Belshazzar is greatly troubled, and his countenance is changing in him, and his great men are perplexed.

10 L a regina, a motivo delle parole del re e dei suoi grandi, entrò nella sala del banchetto. La regina prese a dire: «O re possa tu vivere per sempre! I tuoi pensieri non ti turbino e il tuo aspetto non Cambi.

The queen, on account of the words of the king and his great men, to the banquet-house hath come up. Answered hath the queen, and said, `O king, to the ages live; let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor thy countenance be changed:

11 C 'è un uomo nel tuo regno, in cui è lo spirito degli dèi santi; e al tempo di tuo padre si trovò in lui luce, intendimento e sapienza simile alla sapienza degli dèi; il re Nebukadnetsar, tuo padre, tuo padre il re, lo stabilí capo dei maghi degli astrologi, dei Caldei e degli indovini.

there is a man in thy kingdom in whom the spirit of the holy gods: and, in the days of thy father, light, and understanding, and wisdom -- as the wisdom of the gods -- was found in him; and king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, chief of the scribes, enchanters, Chaldeans, soothsayers, established him -- thy father, O king --

12 p erché in questo Daniele, a cui il re aveva posto il nome Beltshatsar, fu trovato uno spirito straordinario, conoscenza, intendimento, abilità nell'interpretare i sogni, spiegare enigmi e risolvere questioni complicate. Si chiami dunque Daniele ed egli darà l'interpretazione».

because that an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of enigmas, and loosing of knots was found in him, in Daniel, whose name the king made Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and the interpretation he doth show.'

13 A llora Daniele fu introdotto alla presenza del re; il re parlò a Daniele e gli disse: «Sei tu Daniele, uno degli esuli di Giuda, che il re mio padre condusse dalla Giudea?

Then Daniel hath been caused to come up before the king; answered hath the king, and said to Daniel, `Thou art that Daniel who of the sons of the Removed of Judah, whom the king my father brought in out of Judah?

14 H o inteso dire di te che lo spirito degli dèi è in te e che in te si trova luce, intendimento e una sapienza straordinaria.

And I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods in thee, and light, and understanding, and excellent wisdom have been found in thee.

15 O ra hanno fatto venire alla mia presenza i savi e gli astrologi perché leggessero questa scritta e me ne facessero conoscere l'interpretazione ma non sono stati capaci di darmi l'interpretazione della cosa.

`And now, caused to come up before me have been the wise men, the enchanters, that this writing they may read, and its interpretation to cause me to know: and they are not able to shew the interpretation of the thing:

16 H o invece sentito dire di te che tu puoi dare l'interpretazione e risolvere questioni complicate. Ora se sei capace di leggere questa scritta e farmene conoscere l'interpretazione, tu sarai rivestito di porpora, porterai una collana d'oro al collo e sarai terzo nel governo del regno».

and I -- I have heard of thee, that thou art able to give interpretations, and to loose knots: now, lo -- thou art able to read the writing, and its interpretation to cause me to know -- purple thou dost put on, and a bracelet of gold on thy neck, and third in the kingdom thou dost rule.'

17 A llora Daniele rispose e disse davanti al re: «Tieniti pure i tuoi doni e da' a un altro le tue ricompense; tuttavia io leggerò la scritta al re e gliene farò conoscere l'interpretazione.

Then hath Daniel answered and said before the king, `Thy gifts be to thyself, and thy fee to another give; nevertheless, the writing I do read to the king, and the interpretation I cause him to know;

18 O re, il Dio Altissimo aveva dato a Nebukadnetsar tuo padre regno, grandezza, gloria e maestà.

thou, O king, God Most High, a kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and honour, gave to Nebuchadnezzar thy father:

19 P er la grandezza che gli aveva dato tutti i popoli, tutte le nazioni e lingue tremavano e temevano davanti a lui: egli faceva morire chi voleva e lasciava in vita chi voleva, innalzava chi voleva e abbassava chi voleva.

and because of the greatness that He gave to him, all peoples, nations, and languages were trembling and fearing before him: whom he willed he was slaying, and whom he willed he was keeping alive, and whom he willed he was raising up, and whom he willed he was making low;

20 Q uando però il suo cuore si innalzò e il suo spirito si indurí fino all'arroganza, fu deposto dal suo trono reale e gli fu tolta la sua gloria.

and when his heart was high, and his spirit was strong to act proudly, he hath been caused to come down from the throne of his kingdom, and his glory they have caused to pass away from him,

21 F u quindi scacciato di mezzo ai figli degli uomini, il suo cuore fu reso simile a quello delle bestie e la sua dimora fu con gli asini selvatici; gli fu data da mangiare erba come ai buoi e il suo corpo fu bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo finché riconobbe che il Dio altissimo domina sul regno degli uomini e su di esso stabilisce chi vuole.

and from the sons of men he is driven, and his heart with the beasts hath been like, and with the wild asses his dwelling; the herb like oxen they cause him to eat, and by the dew of the heavens is his body wet, till that he hath known that God Most High is ruler in the kingdom of men, and whom He willeth He raiseth up over it.

22 M a tu, Belshatsar suo figlio, benché sapessi tutto questo non hai umiliato il tuo cuore;

`And thou, his son, Belshazzar, hast not humbled thy heart, though all this thou hast known;

23 a nzi ti sei innalzato contro il Signore del cielo; ti sei fatto portare davanti i vasi del suo tempio, e in essi avete bevuto vino tu e i tuoi grandi le tue mogli e le tue concubine. Inoltre hai lodato gli dèi d'argento, d'oro, di bronzo, di ferro, di legno e di pietra, che non vedono, non odono e non comprendono e non hai glorificato il Dio, nella cui mano è il tuo soffio vitale e a cui appartengono tutte le tue vie.

and against the Lord of the heavens thou hast lifted up thyself; and the vessels of His house they have brought in before thee, and thou, and thy great men, thy wives, and thy concubines, are drinking wine with them, and gods of silver, and of gold, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone, that are not seeing, nor hearing, nor knowing, thou hast praised: and the God in whose hand thy breath, and all thy ways, Him thou hast not honoured.

24 P erciò dalla sua presenza è stata mandata la parte di quella mano, che ha tracciato la scritta.

`Then from before Him sent is the extremity of the hand, and the writing is noted down;

25 Q uesta è la scritta che è stata tracciata: MENE, MENE, TEKEL UFARSIN.

and this the writing that is noted down: Numbered, Numbered, Weighed, and Divided.

26 Q uesta è l'interpretazione di ogni parola: MENE: Dio ha fatto il conto del tuo regno e gli ha posto fine.

This the interpretation of the thing: Numbered -- God hath numbered thy kingdom, and hath finished it.

27 T EKEL: tu sei stato pesato sulle bilance e sei stato trovato mancante.

Weighed -- Thou art weighed in the balances, and hast been found lacking.

28 P ERES: il tuo regno è stato diviso ed è stato dato ai Medi e ai Persiani».

Divided -- Divided is thy kingdom, and it hath been given to the Medes and Persians.'

29 A llora, per ordine di Belshatsar, Daniele fu rivestito di porpora, gli posero al collo una collana d'oro e proclamarono che egli sarebbe terzo nel governo del regno.

Then hath Belshazzar said, and they have clothed Daniel with purple, and a bracelet of gold on his neck, and they have proclaimed concerning him that he is the third ruler in the kingdom.

30 I n quella stessa notte Belshatsar re dei Caldei, fu ucciso;

In that night Belshazzar king of the Chaldeans is slain,

31 e Dario, il Medo, ricevette il regno all'età di sessantadue anni.

and Darius the Mede hath received the kingdom, when a son of sixty and two years.
