1 « Quando l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, avrà sterminato le nazioni delle quali l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti dà il paese, e tu le scaccerai e abiterai nelle loro città e nelle loro case,

`When Jehovah thy God doth cut off the nations, whose land Jehovah thy God is giving to thee, and thou hast succeeded them, and dwelt in their cities, and in their houses,

2 t i metterai da parte tre città, in mezzo al paese che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti dà in eredità.

three cities thou dost separate for thee in the midst of thy land which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee to possess it.

3 P reparerai delle strade e dividerai in tre parti il territorio del paese che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti dà in eredità, affinché ogni omicida vi si possa rifugiare.

Thou dost prepare for thee the way, and hast divided into three parts the border of thy land which Jehovah thy God doth cause thee to inherit, and it hath been for the fleeing thither of every man-slayer.

4 E questa è la regola per l'omicida che si rifugia là, per aver salva la vita: chiunque ha ucciso il suo prossimo involontariamente, senza averlo odiato prima.

`And this the matter of the man-slayer who fleeth thither, and hath lived: He who smiteth his neighbour unknowingly, and is not hating him heretofore,

5 C osì, quando uno va con il suo compagno nel bosco a tagliar legna e, mentre vibra un colpo con la scure per abbattere un albero, il ferro gli sfugge dal manico e colpisce il compagno che poi muore, quel tale si rifugerà in una di queste città ed avrà salva la vita;

even he who cometh in with his neighbour into a forest to hew wood, and his hand hath driven with an axe to cut the tree, and the iron hath slipped from the wood, and hath met his neighbour, and he hath died -- he doth flee unto one of these cities, and hath lived,

6 p erché il vendicatore del sangue, mentre l'ira gli arde in cuore, non insegua l'omicida e lo raggiunga, quando il cammino è troppo lungo, e lo uccida anche se non meritava la morte, perché nel passato non aveva odiato il compagno.

lest the redeemer of blood pursue after the man-slayer when his heart is hot, and hath overtaken him (because the way is great), and hath smitten him -- the life, and he hath no sentence of death, for he is not hating him heretofore;

7 P erciò ti comando così: "Mettiti da parte tre città".

therefore I am commanding thee, saying, Three cities thou dost separate to thee.

8 S e poi l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, allarga i tuoi confini, come giurò ai tuoi padri e ti dà tutto il paese che promise di dare ai tuoi padri,

`And if Jehovah thy God doth enlarge thy border, as He hath sworn to thy fathers, and hath given to thee all the land which He hath spoken to give to thy fathers --

9 s e tu osservi tutti questi comandamenti che oggi ti prescrivo, amando l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, e camminando sempre nelle sue vie, allora aggiungerai altre tre città a quelle tre,

when thou keepest all this command to do it, which I am commanding thee to-day, to love Jehovah thy God, and to walk in His ways all the days -- then thou hast added to thee yet three cities to these three;

10 a ffinché non si sparga sangue innocente in mezzo al paese che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti dà in eredità e tu non ti renda colpevole di omicidio.

and innocent blood is not shed in the midst of thy land which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee -- an inheritance, and there hath been upon thee blood.

11 M a se un uomo odia il suo prossimo, gli tende un agguato, lo aggredisce e lo ferisce a morte, e poi si rifugia in una di quelle città,

`And when a man is hating his neighbour, and hath lain in wait for him, and risen against him, and smitten him -- the life, and he hath died, and he hath fled unto one of these cities,

12 g li anziani della sua città lo manderanno a prendere di là e lo consegneranno in mano al vendicatore del sangue affinché sia messo a morte.

then the elders of his city have sent and taken him from thence, and given him into the hand of the redeemer of blood, and he hath died;

13 I l tuo occhio non avrà pietà di lui, ma rimuoverai da Israele la colpa di aver sparso sangue innocente, e così prospererai.

thine eye hath no pity on him, and thou hast put away the innocent blood from Israel, and it is well with thee.

14 N on sposterai i confini del tuo vicino, posti dagli antenati nell'eredità che otterrai nel paese che l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti dà in possesso.

`Thou dost not remove a border of thy neighbour, which they of former times have made, in thine inheritance, which thou dost inherit in the land which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee to possess it.

15 U n solo testimone non basterà ad incolpare alcuno per qualsiasi crimine o peccato abbia commesso; il fatto sarà stabilito sulla deposizione di due o di tre testimoni.

`One witness doth not rise against a man for any iniquity, and for any sin, in any sin which he sinneth; by the mouth of two witnesses, or by the mouth of three witnesses, is a thing established.

16 S e contro qualcuno si leva un falso testimone per accusarlo di un delitto,

`When a violent witness doth rise against a man, to testify against him apostacy,

17 a llora i due uomini fra i quali ha luogo la vertenza compariranno davanti all'Eterno, davanti ai sacerdoti e ai giudici in carica in quei giorni.

then have both the men who have the strife stood before Jehovah, before the priests and the judges who are in those days,

18 I giudici indagheranno con cura; e se quel testimone risulta un testimone falso, che ha deposto il falso contro suo fratello,

and the judges have searched diligently, and lo, the witness a false witness, a falsehood he hath testified against his brother:

19 a llora farete a lui ciò che intendeva fare a suo fratello. Così estirperai il male di mezzo a te.

`Then ye have done to him as he devised to do to his brother, and thou hast put away the evil thing out of thy midst,

20 G li altri verranno a saperlo e ne avranno paura, e d'allora in poi non si commetterà piú in mezzo a te una tale azione malvagia.

and those who are left do hear and fear, and add not to do any more according to this evil thing in thy midst;

21 L 'occhio tuo non avrà pietà, ma sarà: vita per vita, occhio per occhio, dente per dente, mano per mano, piede per piede».

and thine eye doth not pity -- life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
