1 P erciò, non potendo piú resistere fummo contenti di essere lasciati soli in Atene,

Wherefore no longer forbearing, we thought good to be left in Athens alone,

2 e mandammo Timoteo, nostro fratello e ministro di Dio, e nostro compagno d'opera nell'evangelo di Cristo, per confermarvi e confortarvi nella vostra fede,

and did send Timotheus -- our brother, and a ministrant of God, and our fellow-workman in the good news of the Christ -- to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith,

3 a ffinché nessuno fosse scosso in queste afflizioni, poiché voi stessi sapete che a questo noi siamo stati designati.

that no one be moved in these tribulations, for yourselves have known that for this we are set,

4 I nfatti anche quando eravamo tra voi vi predicevamo che avremmo sofferto tribolazioni, proprio come è avvenuto, e voi lo sapete.

for even when we were with you, we said to you beforehand, that we are about to suffer tribulation, as also it did come to pass, and ye have known;

5 P er questa ragione, non potendo piú resistere, io pure mandai ad informarmi sulla vostra fede, che talora il tentatore non vi avesse tentati, e la nostra fatica non fosse riuscita vana.

because of this also, I, no longer forbearing, did send to know your faith, lest he who is tempting did tempt you, and in vain might be our labour.

6 M a ora che Timoteo da voi è ritornato a noi e ci ha riferito buone notizie della vostra fede e amore, e che voi conservate sempre un buon ricordo di noi e desiderate grandemente vederci, come anche noi desideriamo vedere voi,

And now Timotheus having come unto us from you, and having declared good news to us of your faith and love, and that ye have a good remembrance of us always, desiring much to see us, as we also you,

7 p er questo, fratelli, noi siamo stati consolati a vostro riguardo, in tutta la nostra afflizione e sofferenza, a motivo della vostra fede,

because of this we were comforted, brethren, over you, in all our tribulation and necessity, through your faith,

8 p erché ora veramente viviamo, se voi state fermi nel Signore.

because now we live, if ye may stand fast in the Lord;

9 Q uale ringraziamento possiamo infatti rendere a Dio per voi, per tutta la gioia che proviamo a causa vostra davanti al nostro Dio,

for what thanks are we able to recompense to God for you, for all the joy with which we do joy because of you in the presence of our God?

10 p regando intensamente, notte e giorno, per poter vedere la vostra faccia e compiere le cose che mancano ancora alla vostra fede?

night and day exceedingly beseeching, that we might see your face, and perfect the things lacking in your faith.

11 O ra Dio stesso, nostro Padre, e il Signor nostro Gesú Cristo appianino il nostro cammino per venire da voi.

And our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you,

12 E il Signore vi faccia crescere e abbondare nell'amore gli uni verso gli altri e verso tutti, come anche noi abbondiamo verso di voi,

and you the Lord cause to increase and to abound in the love to one another, and to all, even as we also to you,

13 p er rendere fermi i vostri cuori, affinché siano irreprensibili nella santità davanti a Dio e Padre nostro, alla venuta del Signor nostro Gesú Cristo con tutti i suoi santi. Amen.

to the establishing your hearts blameless in sanctification before our God and Father, in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.
