1 D opo queste cose, avvenne che il re dei figli di Ammon morí e suo Figlio Hanun regnò al suo posto.

And it cometh to pass afterwards, that the king of the Bene-Ammon dieth, and Hanun his son reigneth in his stead,

2 D avide disse: «lo voglio usare con Hanun, figlio di Nahash, la stessa benevolenza che suo padre usò con me». Cosí Davide mandò i suoi servi a consolarlo della perdita del padre. Ma quando i servi di Davide giunsero nel paese dei figli di Ammon,

and David saith, `I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, as his father did with me kindness;' and David sendeth to comfort him by the hand of his servants concerning his father, and the servants of David come in to the land of the Bene-Ammon.

3 i capi dei figli di Ammon dissero ad Hanun, loro signore: «Credi proprio che Davide ti abbia mandato dei consolatori per onorare tuo padre? Non ha piuttosto mandato da te i suoi servi per esplorare la città, per spiarla e distruggerla?».

And the heads of the Bene-Ammon say unto Hanun their lord, `Is David honouring thy father in thine eyes because he hath sent to thee comforters? for to search the city, and to spy it, and to overthrow it, hath not David sent his servants unto thee?'

4 A llora Hanun prese i servi di Davide, fece loro radere metà della barba e tagliare le loro vesti a metà fino alle natiche, poi li lasciò andare.

And Hanun taketh the servants of David, and shaveth off the half of their beard, and cutteth off their long robes in the midst -- unto their buttocks, and sendeth them away;

5 I nformato della cosa, Davide mandò alcuni ad incontrarli, perché quegli uomini erano pieni di vergogna. Il re fece dir loro: «Rimanete a Gerico finché vi ricresca la barba, poi ritornerete».

and they declare to David, and he sendeth to meet them, for the men have been greatly ashamed, and the king saith, `Abide in Jericho till your beard doth spring up -- then ye have returned.'

6 Q uando i figli di Ammon si accorsero di essersi resi odiosi a Davide, mandarono ad assoldare ventimila fanti dei Siri di Beth-Rehob e dei Siri di Tsoba, mille uomini del re di Maakah e dodicimila uomini della gente di Tob.

And the Bene-Ammon see that they have been abhorred by David, and the Bene-Ammon send and hire Aram of Beth-Rehob, and Aram of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah a thousand men, and Ish-Tob twelve thousand men;

7 C ome Davide udí questo, inviò contro di loro Joab con tutto l'esercito di uomini valorosi.

and David heareth, and sendeth Joab, and all the host -- the mighty men.

8 I figli di Ammon uscirono e si schierarono in ordine di battaglia all'ingresso della porta della città, mentre i Siri di Tsoba e di Rehob, e la gente di Tob e di Maakah si disposero in aperta campagna.

And the Bene-Ammon come out, and set battle in array, at the opening of the gate, and Aram of Zoba, and Rehob, and Ish-Tob, and Maacah, by themselves in the field;

9 Q uando Joab si rese conto che aveva contro di se due fronti di battaglia, uno davanti e l'altro dietro, scelse alcuni fra gli uomini migliori d'Israele e li dispose in ordine di battaglia contro i Siri;

and Joab seeth that the front of the battle hath been unto him before and behind, and he chooseth of all the chosen in Israel, and setteth in array to meet Aram,

10 a ffidò quindi il resto del popolo agli ordini di suo fratello Abishai, per schierarsi contro i figli di Ammon.

and the rest of the people he hath given into the hand of Abishai his brother, and setteth in array to meet the Bene-Ammon.

11 P oi gli disse: «Se i Siri sono piú forti di me, tu mi verrai in aiuto; se invece i figli di Ammon sono piú forti di te, allora verrò io in tuo aiuto.

And he saith, `If Aram be stronger than I, then thou hast been to me for salvation, and if the Bene-Ammon be stronger than thou, then I have come to give salvation to thee;

12 S ii coraggioso e mostriamoci forti per il nostro popolo e per le città del nostro DIO; e l'Eterno faccia ciò che a lui piacerà».

be strong and strengthen thyself for our people, and for the cities of our God, and Jehovah doth that which is good in His eyes.'

13 P oi Joab con la gente che aveva con sé avanzò per dar battaglia ai Siri; ma essi fuggirono davanti a lui.

And Joab draweth nigh, and the people who with him, to battle against Aram, and they flee from his presence;

14 Q uando i figli di Ammon videro che i Siri erano fuggiti, fuggirono anch'essi davanti ad Abishai e rientrarono nella città. Allora Joab se ne tornò dalla spedizione contro i figli di Ammon e venne a Gerusalemme.

and the Bene-Ammon have seen that Aram hath fled, and they flee from the presence of Abishai, and go in to the city; and Joab turneth back from the Bene-Ammon, and cometh in to Jerusalem.

15 Q uando i Siri videro che erano stati sconfitti da Israele si riunirono insieme.

And Aram seeth that it is smitten before Israel, and they are gathered together;

16 H adadezer mandò messaggeri per far venire i Siri che erano di là dal Fiume. Essi giunsero a Helam, con alla testa Shobak, capo dell'esercito di Hadadezer.

and Hadadezer sendeth, and bringeth out Aram which beyond the River, and they come in to Helam, and Shobach head of the host of Hadadezer before them.

17 Q uando Davide fu informato della cosa, radunò tutto Israele, passò il Giordano e giunse a Helam. I Siri si schierarono contro Davide e gli diedero battaglia.

And it is declared to David, and he gathereth all Israel, and passeth over the Jordan, and cometh in to Helam, and Aram setteth itself in array to meet David, and they fight with him;

18 M a i Siri fuggirono davanti a Israele; e Davide uccise dei Siri gli uomini di settecento carri e quarantamila cavalieri e colpí Shobak, capo del loro esercito, che morí in quel luogo.

and Aram fleeth from the presence of Israel, and David slayeth of Aram seven hundred charioteers, and forty thousand horsemen, and Shobach head of its host he hath smitten, and he dieth there.

19 Q uando tutti i re vassalli di Hadadezer si videro sconfitti da Israele, fecero pace con Israele e furono a lui sottoposti. Cosí i Siri ebbero paura di prestare ancora aiuto ai figli di Ammon.

And all the kings -- servants of Hadadezer -- see that they have been smitten before Israel, and make peace with Israel, and serve them; and Aram is afraid to help any more the Bene-Ammon.
