1 I l ventiquattresimo giorno dello stesso mese, i figli d'Israele si radunarono per un digiuno, vestiti di sacco e coperti di terra.

And in the twenty and fourth day of this month have the sons of Israel been gathered, with fasting, and with sackcloth, and earth upon them;

2 Q uelli che appartenevano alla stirpe d'Israele si separarono da tutti gli stranieri e si presentarono per confessare i loro peccati e le iniquità dei loro padri.

and the seed of Israel are separated from all sons of a stranger, and stand and confess concerning their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers,

3 Q uindi si alzarono in piedi al loro posto e lessero il libro della legge dell'Eterno, il loro DIO, per la quarta parte del giorno, e per un'altra quarta parte fecero la confessione dei peccati e si prostrarono davanti all'Eterno, il loro DIO.

and rise up on their station, and read in the book of the law of Jehovah their God a fourth of the day, and a fourth they are confessing and bowing themselves to Jehovah their God.

4 P oi Jeshua, Bani e Kadmiel, Scebaniah, Bunni, Scerebiah, Bani e Kenani salirono sulla tribuna dei Leviti e gridarono ad alta voce all'Eterno, il loro DIO.

And there stand up on the ascent, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, Chenani, and they cry with a loud voice unto Jehovah their God.

5 I Leviti Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Scerebiah, Hodijah, Scebaniah e Pethahiah dissero: «Alzatevi e benedite l'Eterno, il vostro DIO, d'eternità in eternità! Si benedica il nome tuo glorioso, che è esaltato al disopra di ogni benedizione e lode!

And the Levites say, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, Pethahiah, `Rise, bless Jehovah your God, from the age unto the age, and they bless the name of Thine honour that exalted above all blessing and praise.

6 T u solo sei l'Eterno! Tu hai fatto i cieli dei cieli dei cieli e tutto il loro esercito, la terra e tutto ciò che sta su di essa, i mari e tutto ciò che è in essi. Tu conservi in vita tutte queste cose, e l'esercito dei cieli ti adora.

Thou He, O Jehovah, Thyself -- Thou hast made the heavens, the heavens of the heavens, and all their host, the earth and all that on it, the seas and all that in them, and Thou art keeping all of them alive, and the host of the heavens to Thee are bowing themselves.

7 T u sei l'Eterno, il DIO che ha scelto Abramo; lo hai fatto uscire da Ur dei Caldei e gli hai dato il nome di Abrahamo,

`Thou He, O Jehovah God, who didst fix on Abraham, and didst bring him out from Ur of the Chaldeans, and didst make his name Abraham,

8 T u hai trovato il suo cuore fedele davanti a te e hai stabilito un patto con lui, per dare alla sua discendenza il paese dei Cananei, degli Hittei, degli Amorei, dei Perezei, dei Gebusei e dei Ghirgasei; tu hai adempiuto la tua parola, perché sei giusto.

and didst find his heart stedfast before Thee, so as to make with him the covenant, to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give to his seed. `And Thou dost establish Thy words, for Thou righteous,

9 T u hai visto l'afflizione dei nostri padri in Egitto e hai udito il loro grido presso il Mar Rosso.

and dost see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and their cry hast heard by the sea of Suph,

10 H ai operato miracoli e prodigi contro il Faraone, contro tutti i suoi servi e contro tutto il popolo del suo paese, perché sapevi che essi avevano trattato i nostri padri con insolenza. Cosí ti sei fatto un nome che rimane anche oggi.

and dost give signs and wonders on Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land, for Thou hast known that they have acted proudly against them, and Thou makest to Thee a name as this day.

11 T u hai diviso il mare davanti a loro, ed essi sono passati in mezzo al mare sull'asciutto, mentre invece tu precipitavi nell'abisso i loro inseguitori come una pietra in acque impetuose.

And the sea Thou hast cleaved before them, and they pass over into the midst of the sea on the dry land, and their pursuers Thou hast cast into the depths, as a stone, into the strong waters.

12 T u li hai guidati di giorno con una colonna di nuvola e di notte con una colonna di fuoco per illuminare loro la via su cui camminare.

And by a pillar of cloud Thou hast led them by day, and by a pillar of fire by night, to lighten to them the way in which they go.

13 S ei pure disceso sul monte Sinai, hai parlato loro dal cielo e hai dato loro giusti decreti e leggi di verità, buoni statuti e comandamenti,

`And on mount Sinai Thou hast come down, even to speak with them from the heavens, and Thou dost give to them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commands.

14 H ai fatto loro conoscere il tuo santo sabato e hai dato loro comandamenti, statuti e una legge per mezzo di Mosè, tuo servo.

And Thy holy sabbath Thou hast made known to them, and commands, and statutes, and law, Thou hast commanded for them, by the hand of Moses Thy servant;

15 T u hai pure dato loro pane dal cielo quando erano affamati e hai fatto scaturire acqua dalla roccia quando erano assetati, e comandasti loro di andare a prendere possesso del paese che avevi giurato di dare loro.

and bread from the heavens Thou hast given to them for their hunger, and water from a rock hast brought out to them for their thirst, and dost say to them to go in to possess the land that Thou hast lifted up Thy hand to give to them.

16 M a essi e i nostri padri si comportarono con superbia, indurirono la loro cervice e non ubbidirono ai tuoi comandamenti.

`And they and our fathers have acted proudly, and harden their neck, and have not hearkened unto Thy commands,

17 S i rifiutarono di ubbidire e non si ricordarono delle meraviglie che tu avevi compiuto in mezzo a loro; indurirono invece la loro cervice e nella loro ribellione si scelsero un capo per tornare alla loro schiavitú. Ma tu sei un Dio pronto a perdonare, misericordioso, pieno di compassione, lento all'ira e di grande benignità. Tu non li hai abbandonati,

yea, they refuse to hearken, and have not remembered Thy wonders that Thou hast done with them, and harden their neck and appoint a head, to turn back to their service, in their rebellion; and Thou a God of pardons, gracious, and merciful, long-suffering, and abundant in kindness, and hast not forsaken them.

18 n eppure quando si fecero un vitello di metallo fuso e dissero: "Questo è il tuo dio che ti ha fatto uscire dall'Egitto!", fecero cosí una cosa blasfema.

`Also, when they have made to themselves a molten calf, and say, this thy god that brought thee up out of Egypt, and do great despisings,

19 T uttavia nella tua grande misericordia non li hai abbandonati nel deserto, la colonna di nuvola non si allontanò da loro durante il giorno per guidarli nel cammino, e la colonna di fuoco durante la notte per illuminare loro la via su cui camminare.

and Thou, in Thine abundant mercies, hast not forsaken them in the wilderness -- the pillar of the cloud hath not turned aside from off them by day, to lead them in the way, and the pillar of the fire by night, to give light to them and the way in which they go.

20 H ai dato il tuo buono Spirito per istruirli; non hai rifiutato la tua manna alle loro bocche e hai dato loro acqua quando erano assetati.

`And Thy good Spirit Thou hast given, to cause them to act wisely; and Thy manna Thou hast not withheld from their mouth, and water Thou hast given to them for their thirst,

21 P er quarant'anni li hai nutriti nel deserto, e non mancò loro nulla; le loro vesti non si logorarono e i loro piedi non si gonfiarono.

and forty years Thou hast nourished them in a wilderness; they have not lacked; their garments have not worn out, and their feet have not swelled.

22 H ai inoltre dato loro regni e popoli assegnando loro le regioni piú lontane cosi essi entrarono in possesso del paese di Sihon, del paese del re di Heshbon e del paese di Og, re di Bashan.

`And Thou givest to them kingdoms, and peoples, and dost apportion them to the corner, and they possess the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

23 H ai moltiplicato i loro figli come le stelle del cielo e li hai introdotti nel paese in cui avevi detto ai padri loro di entrare per possederlo.

And their sons Thou hast multiplied as the stars of the heavens, and bringest them in unto the land that Thou hast said to their fathers to go in to possess.

24 C osí i loro figli entrarono e presero possesso del paese; tu hai umiliato davanti a loro gli abitanti del paese, i Cananei, e li hai dati nelle loro mani con i loro re e con i popoli del paese, perché ne facessero quel che a loro piaceva.

`And the sons come in, and possess the land, and Thou humblest before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and givest them into their hand, and their kings, and the peoples of the land, to do with them according to their pleasure.

25 E ssi si impadronirono di città fortificate e di una terra fertile ed entrarono in possesso di case piene di ogni bene, di cisterne già scavate, di vigne, di uliveti e d'alberi fruttiferi in abbondanza, mangiarono, si saziarono, ingrassarono e vissero nelle delizie per la tua grande bontà.

And they capture fenced cities, and fat ground, and possess houses full of all good, digged-wells, vineyards, and olive-yards, and fruit-trees in abundance, and they eat, and are satisfied, and become fat, and delight themselves in Thy great goodness.

26 C iò nonostante essi furono disubbidirono, si ribellarono contro di te, gettarono la tua legge dietro le spalle, uccisero i tuoi profeti che li esortavano a ritornare a te e commisero cose blasfeme.

`And they are disobedient, and rebel against Thee, and cast Thy law behind their back, and Thy prophets they have slain, who testified against them, to bring them back unto Thee, and they do great despisings,

27 P erciò tu li desti nelle mani dei loro nemici, che li oppressero; ma al tempo della loro sventura essi gridarono a te, e tu li ascoltasti dal cielo e, nella tua grande misericordia, tu desti loro dei liberatori, che li salvarono dalle mani dei loro nemici.

and Thou givest them into the hand of their adversaries, and they distress them, and in the time of their distress they cry unto Thee, and Thou, from the heavens, dost hear, and, according to Thine abundant mercies, dost give to them saviours, and they save them out of the hand of their adversaries.

28 Q uando però avevano riposo, essi ricominciavano a compiere il male davanti a te; perciò tu li abbandonavi nelle mani dei loro nemici, che li dominavano; tuttavia, quando tornavano a gridare a te, tu li ascoltavi dal cielo, cosí nella tua misericordia molte volte li hai liberati.

`And when they have rest, they turn back to do evil before Thee, and Thou dost leave them in the hand of their enemies, and they rule over them; and they turn back, and call Thee, and Thou from the heavens dost hear, and dost deliver them, according to Thy mercies, many times,

29 T u li esortavi per farli tornare alla tua legge, ma essi si inorgoglivano e non ubbidivano ai tuoi comandamenti, e peccavano contro i tuoi decreti per mezzo dei quali, se uno li mette in pratica salva la vita; ritraevano le loro spalle dal giogo, indurivano la loro cervice e rifiutavano di ubbidire.

and dost testify against them, to bring them back unto Thy law; and they -- they have acted proudly, and have not hearkened to Thy commands, and against Thy judgments have sinned, -- which man doth and hath lived in them -- and they give a refractory shoulder, and their neck have hardened, and have not hearkened.

30 P azientasti con essi per molti anni esortandoli mediante il tuo Spirito e per bocca dei tuoi profeti, ma essi non vollero prestare orecchio; allora tu li desti nelle mani dei popoli dei vari paesi.

`And Thou drawest over them many years, and testifiest against them by Thy Spirit, by the hand of Thy prophets, and they have not given ear, and Thou dost give them into the hand of peoples of the lands,

31 P erò nella tua grande compassione non li hai interamente distrutti e non li hai abbandonati, perché sei un Dio clemente e misericordioso.

and in Thine abundant mercies Thou hast not made them a consumption, nor hast forsaken them; for a God, gracious and merciful, Thou.

32 O ra dunque, o DIO nostro, Dio grande, potente e tremendo, che mantieni il patto e la misericordia, non sembri poca cosa davanti a te la sciagura che è venuta su di noi, sui nostri re, sui nostri sacerdoti, sui nostri profeti, sui nostri padri e su tutto il tuo popolo, dal tempo dei re di Assiria fino al giorno d'oggi.

`And now, O our God -- God, the great, the mighty, and the fearful, keeping the covenant and the kindness -- let not all the travail that hath found us be little before Thee, for our kings, for our heads, and for our priests, and for our prophets, and for our fathers, and for all Thy people, from the days of the kings of Asshur unto this day;

33 T uttavia tu sei stato giusto in tutto quello che ci è accaduto, perché tu hai agito fedelmente, mentre noi abbiamo agito empiamente.

and Thou righteous concerning all that hath come upon us, for truth Thou hast done, and we have done wickedly;

34 I nostri re, i nostri capi, i nostri sacerdoti i nostri padri non hanno messo in pratica la tua legge né hanno ubbidito ai tuoi comandamenti e ai tuoi precetti con cui li esortavi.

and our kings, our heads, our priests, and our fathers, have not done Thy law, nor attended unto Thy commands, and to Thy testimonies, that Thou hast testified against them;

35 P ersino quando si trovavano nel loro regno, nella grande prosperità che tu avevi loro largito e nel vasto e fertile paese che avevi messo a loro disposizione, non ti servirono e non abbandonarono le loro opere malvagie.

and they, in their kingdom, and in Thine abundant goodness, that Thou hast given to them, and in the land, the large and the fat, that Thou hast set before them, have not served Thee, nor turned back from their evil doings.

36 E oggi eccoci schiavi! Siamo schiavi nel paese che avevi dato ai nostri padri perché ne mangiassero i frutti e ne godessero i beni.

`Lo, we -- to-day -- servants, and the land that Thou hast given to our fathers, to eat its fruit and its good -- lo, we servants on it,

37 C osí i suoi abbondanti prodotti vanno ai re che tu hai stabilito sopra di noi, a causa dei nostri peccati; essi signoreggiano sui nostri corpi e sul nostro bestiame come vogliono; e noi siamo in grande angoscia.

and its increase it is multiplying to the kings whom Thou hast set over us in our sins; and over our bodies they are ruling, and over our cattle, according to their pleasure, and we in great distress.

38 A motivo di tutto questo, noi prendiamo un fermo impegno e lo mettiamo per scritto; e i nostri capi, i nostri Leviti, e i nostri sacerdoti vi metteranno il loro sigillo».

And for all this we are making a stedfast covenant, and are writing, and over him who is sealed our heads, our Levites, our priests.'
