1 E l día veinticuatro del mismo mes, los israelitas volvieron a reunirse para ayunar, vestidos con ropas ásperas y con la cabeza cubierta de polvo.

And in the twenty and fourth day of this month have the sons of Israel been gathered, with fasting, and with sackcloth, and earth upon them;

2 P ara entonces los israelitas ya habían apartado de sí a los hijos de extranjeros. Puestos de pie, los israelitas confesaron sus pecados y los de sus padres,

and the seed of Israel are separated from all sons of a stranger, and stand and confess concerning their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers,

3 y así de pie, durante tres horas escucharon la lectura del libro de la ley del Señor su Dios, y durante las siguientes tres horas el pueblo confesó sus pecados y adoró al Señor.

and rise up on their station, and read in the book of the law of Jehovah their God a fourth of the day, and a fourth they are confessing and bowing themselves to Jehovah their God.

4 L uego, los levitas Josué, Bani, Cadmiel, Sebanías, Binuy, Serebías, Bani y Quenani subieron los escalones, y en voz alta clamaron al Señor.

And there stand up on the ascent, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, Chenani, and they cry with a loud voice unto Jehovah their God.

5 P or su parte, los levitas Josué, Cadmiel, Bani, Jasabnías, Serebías, Hodías, Sebanías y Petajías dijeron al pueblo: «¡Vamos, bendigamos al Señor nuestro Dios desde la eternidad y hasta la eternidad! »Señor, ¡que tu glorioso y excelso nombre sea bendito más allá de toda bendición y alabanza!

And the Levites say, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, Pethahiah, `Rise, bless Jehovah your God, from the age unto the age, and they bless the name of Thine honour that exalted above all blessing and praise.

6 T ú, Señor, eres el único Señor. Tú hiciste los cielos, y los cielos de los cielos, con todas sus huestes; tú creaste la tierra y el mar, y todo lo que hay en ellos; tú diste vida a todo cuanto existe; por eso las huestes celestiales te adoran.

Thou He, O Jehovah, Thyself -- Thou hast made the heavens, the heavens of the heavens, and all their host, the earth and all that on it, the seas and all that in them, and Thou art keeping all of them alive, and the host of the heavens to Thee are bowing themselves.

7 T ú, Señor, eres el Dios que eligió a Abrán; tú le ordenaste salir de Ur de los caldeos; tú le pusiste por nombre Abrahán;

`Thou He, O Jehovah God, who didst fix on Abraham, and didst bring him out from Ur of the Chaldeans, and didst make his name Abraham,

8 t ú lo consideraste digno de confianza e hiciste un pacto con él; tú prometiste dar a sus descendientes la tierra donde vivían los cananeos, los hititas, los amorreos, los ferezeos, los jebuseos y los gergeseos, y cumpliste tu promesa, porque eres justo.

and didst find his heart stedfast before Thee, so as to make with him the covenant, to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give to his seed. `And Thou dost establish Thy words, for Thou righteous,

9 T ú viste en Egipto la aflicción de nuestros padres, y escuchaste su clamor en el Mar Rojo;

and dost see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and their cry hast heard by the sea of Suph,

10 t ú realizaste señales y maravillas contra el Faraón y sus ejércitos, y contra todos los habitantes de su país, pues sabías que habían tratado a tu pueblo con soberbia; ese día engrandeciste tu nombre, como lo has engrandecido hoy.

and dost give signs and wonders on Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land, for Thou hast known that they have acted proudly against them, and Thou makest to Thee a name as this day.

11 » Ante sus propios ojos, tú dividiste el mar en dos, y tu pueblo pasó por él como en tierra seca; a sus perseguidores, los hundiste en el mar como se hunde una piedra en aguas profundas.

And the sea Thou hast cleaved before them, and they pass over into the midst of the sea on the dry land, and their pursuers Thou hast cast into the depths, as a stone, into the strong waters.

12 T ú los guiaste durante el día por medio de una gran nube, y de noche iluminaste su camino con una columna de fuego, para mostrarles el camino que debían seguir.

And by a pillar of cloud Thou hast led them by day, and by a pillar of fire by night, to lighten to them the way in which they go.

13 T ú descendiste a la cumbre del monte Sinaí; les hablaste desde el cielo y les diste consejos sabios, leyes verdaderas, y estatutos y mandamientos buenos.

`And on mount Sinai Thou hast come down, even to speak with them from the heavens, and Thou dost give to them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commands.

14 T ú les ordenaste respetar la santidad de tu día de reposo, y por medio de tu siervo Moisés les prescribiste mandamientos, estatutos y leyes.

And Thy holy sabbath Thou hast made known to them, and commands, and statutes, and law, Thou hast commanded for them, by the hand of Moses Thy servant;

15 C uando tuvieron hambre, tú les diste a comer pan del cielo; cuando tuvieron sed, hiciste que brotara agua de la peña, y finalmente les diste posesión de la tierra, como habías prometido hacerlo.

and bread from the heavens Thou hast given to them for their hunger, and water from a rock hast brought out to them for their thirst, and dost say to them to go in to possess the land that Thou hast lifted up Thy hand to give to them.

16 » Pero ellos y nuestros padres se llenaron de soberbia, y en su obstinación no prestaron atención a tus mandamientos.

`And they and our fathers have acted proudly, and harden their neck, and have not hearkened unto Thy commands,

17 S e negaron a escucharte y se olvidaron de los hechos maravillosos que habías hecho por ellos; al contrario, se volvieron duros y rebeldes, y buscaron líderes que los guiaran para volver a caer en servidumbre. »Pero tú eres un Dios que perdona; eres un Dios clemente y compasivo; no te enojas fácilmente porque tu misericordia es grande; por eso no los abandonaste,

yea, they refuse to hearken, and have not remembered Thy wonders that Thou hast done with them, and harden their neck and appoint a head, to turn back to their service, in their rebellion; and Thou a God of pardons, gracious, and merciful, long-suffering, and abundant in kindness, and hast not forsaken them.

18 a unque ellos fundieron un becerro y le dijeron al pueblo que ése era el dios que los había sacado de Egipto. Aunque ellos se dedicaron a cometer actos muy repugnantes,

`Also, when they have made to themselves a molten calf, and say, this thy god that brought thee up out of Egypt, and do great despisings,

19 t ú, por tu gran misericordia, no los abandonaste en el desierto: durante el día, la columna de nube no se apartó de ellos para guiarlos en su camino; durante la noche, tampoco se apartó de ellos la columna de fuego para alumbrarles el camino que debían seguir.

and Thou, in Thine abundant mercies, hast not forsaken them in the wilderness -- the pillar of the cloud hath not turned aside from off them by day, to lead them in the way, and the pillar of the fire by night, to give light to them and the way in which they go.

20 L es enviaste tu buen espíritu para instruirles, y no les quitaste el maná con que se alimentaban ni les faltó agua para apagar su sed.

`And Thy good Spirit Thou hast given, to cause them to act wisely; and Thy manna Thou hast not withheld from their mouth, and water Thou hast given to them for their thirst,

21 D urante cuarenta años los sustentaste en el desierto, y nunca nada les faltó, ni se gastaron sus vestidos, ni se les hincharon los pies.

and forty years Thou hast nourished them in a wilderness; they have not lacked; their garments have not worn out, and their feet have not swelled.

22 P usiste en sus manos reinos y pueblos, y los repartiste por distritos, y tomaron posesión de las tierras de Sijón, el rey de Jesbón, y de Og, el rey de Basán.

`And Thou givest to them kingdoms, and peoples, and dost apportion them to the corner, and they possess the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

23 L es diste tantos hijos como las estrellas de los cielos, y los guiaste hasta la tierra que habrían de poseer, como lo habías prometido a sus padres.

And their sons Thou hast multiplied as the stars of the heavens, and bringest them in unto the land that Thou hast said to their fathers to go in to possess.

24 Y sus descendientes tomaron posesión de esas tierras; tú les diste la victoria sobre los que allí habitaban, y ellos vencieron a los cananeos y a sus reyes, y a los pueblos vecinos, para que hicieran con ellos lo que quisieran.

`And the sons come in, and possess the land, and Thou humblest before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and givest them into their hand, and their kings, and the peoples of the land, to do with them according to their pleasure.

25 Y ellos conquistaron ciudades amuralladas y tierras fértiles; se adueñaron de buenas casas y de todo tipo de bienes, de cisternas, de viñedos, de olivares y de abundantes árboles frutales; y comieron hasta saciarse, y disfrutaron de tu gran bondad.

And they capture fenced cities, and fat ground, and possess houses full of all good, digged-wells, vineyards, and olive-yards, and fruit-trees in abundance, and they eat, and are satisfied, and become fat, and delight themselves in Thy great goodness.

26 » Pero provocaron tu enojo porque se rebelaron contra ti, y tuvieron en poco tus leyes; mataron a tus profetas porque les hacían ver su maldad para que se volvieran a ti, pero ellos cometieron actos muy repugnantes.

`And they are disobedient, and rebel against Thee, and cast Thy law behind their back, and Thy prophets they have slain, who testified against them, to bring them back unto Thee, and they do great despisings,

27 » Entonces los dejaste caer en poder de sus enemigos, que los afligieron en gran manera. Y cuando se vieron atribulados, te pidieron ayuda y tú, desde el cielo, los escuchaste, porque eres un Dios misericordioso, y les enviaste hombres valerosos para que los libraran del poder de sus enemigos.

and Thou givest them into the hand of their adversaries, and they distress them, and in the time of their distress they cry unto Thee, and Thou, from the heavens, dost hear, and, according to Thine abundant mercies, dost give to them saviours, and they save them out of the hand of their adversaries.

28 » Pero una vez que estaban en paz, volvían a su mal comportamiento, y por eso tú los dejaste caer en poder de sus enemigos, y ellos volvieron a dominarlos. Pero volvían a pedirte ayuda, y tú, desde el cielo, te compadecías de ellos y los librabas.

`And when they have rest, they turn back to do evil before Thee, and Thou dost leave them in the hand of their enemies, and they rule over them; and they turn back, and call Thee, and Thou from the heavens dost hear, and dost deliver them, according to Thy mercies, many times,

29 L os reprendiste para que respetaran tus leyes, pero ellos, en su soberbia, no cumplieron tus mandamientos sino que se rebelaron contra tus juicios, por los cuales todo hombre que los cumpla, vivirá. Se rebelaron, se encapricharon, no quisieron escucharte.

and dost testify against them, to bring them back unto Thy law; and they -- they have acted proudly, and have not hearkened to Thy commands, and against Thy judgments have sinned, -- which man doth and hath lived in them -- and they give a refractory shoulder, and their neck have hardened, and have not hearkened.

30 P ero tú les tuviste paciencia por mucho tiempo, y por medio de tus profetas les diste muestras de tu espíritu. Pero ellos no quisieron escucharte. Por eso los dejaste caer en manos de otros pueblos.

`And Thou drawest over them many years, and testifiest against them by Thy Spirit, by the hand of Thy prophets, and they have not given ear, and Thou dost give them into the hand of peoples of the lands,

31 G racias a tu gran misericordia, no acabaste con ellos ni los dejaste en el desamparo, porque eres un Dios clemente y misericordioso.

and in Thine abundant mercies Thou hast not made them a consumption, nor hast forsaken them; for a God, gracious and merciful, Thou.

32 » Por eso, Dios nuestro, Dios grande, fuerte y temible, que cumples fielmente tu pacto y mantienes tu gran misericordia con tu pueblo, no tengas en poco todo el sufrimiento que han soportado nuestros reyes y príncipes, nuestros sacerdotes y profetas, nuestros padres y todo tu pueblo, desde que fuimos esclavizados por los reyes de Asiria hasta nuestros días.

`And now, O our God -- God, the great, the mighty, and the fearful, keeping the covenant and the kindness -- let not all the travail that hath found us be little before Thee, for our kings, for our heads, and for our priests, and for our prophets, and for our fathers, and for all Thy people, from the days of the kings of Asshur unto this day;

33 T ú has actuado con justicia en todo lo que nos ha sucedido, porque tú haces todo con rectitud; nosotros, en cambio, hemos hecho lo malo.

and Thou righteous concerning all that hath come upon us, for truth Thou hast done, and we have done wickedly;

34 N inguno de nuestros antepasados cumplió la ley: ni nuestros reyes, ni nuestros príncipes, ni nuestros sacerdotes ni nuestros padres. Ninguno de ellos obedeció tus mandamientos ni escuchó tus reprensiones.

and our kings, our heads, our priests, and our fathers, have not done Thy law, nor attended unto Thy commands, and to Thy testimonies, that Thou hast testified against them;

35 A ceptaron los numerosos reinos que por tu bondad les diste, y disfrutaron de la vasta y fértil tierra que les entregaste; y ni aun así quisieron servirte ni se arrepintieron de su maldad.

and they, in their kingdom, and in Thine abundant goodness, that Thou hast given to them, and in the land, the large and the fat, that Thou hast set before them, have not served Thee, nor turned back from their evil doings.

36 P or eso hoy vivimos como esclavos de otros; somos esclavos en nuestra propia tierra, la tierra que prometiste a nuestros antepasados, para que disfrutaran de sus productos.

`Lo, we -- to-day -- servants, and the land that Thou hast given to our fathers, to eat its fruit and its good -- lo, we servants on it,

37 S us frutos son abundantes, pero ahora van a parar a los graneros de los reyes que nos dominan, y todo a causa de nuestra maldad; ellos se han convertido en nuestros amos, en dueños de nuestro ganado, y hacen con nosotros lo que quieren. Y estamos en grandes aprietos.

and its increase it is multiplying to the kings whom Thou hast set over us in our sins; and over our bodies they are ruling, and over our cattle, according to their pleasure, and we in great distress.

38 » En vista de todo esto, hoy nos comprometemos contigo, y nosotros y nuestros príncipes, y los sacerdotes y los levitas, firmamos este compromiso.»

And for all this we are making a stedfast covenant, and are writing, and over him who is sealed our heads, our Levites, our priests.'
