1 S amuel murió, y todo el pueblo de Israel se reunió para llorar su muerte, y lo sepultaron en su casa, en Ramá. Después, David se fue al desierto de Parán.

And Samuel dieth, and all Israel are gathered, and mourn for him, and bury him in his house, in Ramah; and David riseth and goeth down unto the wilderness of Paran.

2 E n Maón vivía un hombre muy rico, con una gran hacienda en Carmel, donde tenía tres mil ovejas y mil cabras, y en esos días estaba trasquilando sus ovejas.

And a man in Maon, and his work in Carmel; and the man very great, and he hath three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats; and he is shearing his flock in Carmel.

3 S e llamaba Nabal, y su esposa se llamaba Abigaíl. Ella era una mujer hermosa e inteligente, pero Nabal, que era descendiente de Caleb, era duro y malvado.

And the name of the man Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail, and the woman of good understanding, and of fair form, and the man hard and evil doings; and he a Calebite.

4 D avid, que estaba en el desierto, supo que Nabal estaba trasquilando sus ovejas,

And David heareth in the wilderness that Nabal is shearing his flock,

5 a sí que envió a diez de sus criados a visitar a Nabal. Les dijo: «Vayan a Carmel y saluden de mi parte a Nabal.

and David sendeth ten young men, and David saith to the young men, `Go ye up to Carmel, and ye have come in unto Nabal, and asked of him in my name of welfare,

6 D íganle: “Que la paz sea contigo y con tu familia. Que la paz sea con todas tus posesiones.

and said thus: To life! and thou, peace; and thy house, peace; and all that thou hast -- peace!

7 P or medio de tus pastores, que han estado con nosotros, he sabido que estás trasquilando tus ovejas. Los hemos tratado bien, y nada les ha faltado en todo el tiempo que han estado en Carmel.

and, now, I have heard that thou hast shearers; now, the shepherds whom thou hast have been with us, we have not put them to shame, nor hath anything been looked after by them, all the days of their being in Carmel.

8 P regúntales, y te lo dirán. Espero que estos jóvenes sean dignos de tu bondad y lleguen a ti en buen momento. Por favor, dales lo que tengas a la mano. Así ayudarás a tu hijo David.”»

`Ask thy young men, and they declare to thee, and the young men find grace in thine eyes, for on a good day we have come; give, I pray thee, that which thy hand findeth, to thy servants, and to thy son, to David.'

9 L os jóvenes que envió David llegaron con Nabal y le dieron el mensaje que llevaban, y luego guardaron silencio.

And the young men of David come in, and speak unto Nabal according to all these words, in the name of David -- and rest.

10 Y Nabal les respondió: «¿Y quién es David? ¿Quién es ese hijo de Yesé? Hoy día, hay muchos criados que andan huyendo de sus amos.

And Nabal answereth the servants of David and saith, `Who David, and who the son of Jesse? to-day have servants been multiplied who are breaking away each from his master;

11 ¿ Acaso voy a quitarles a mis esquiladores el pan, el agua y la carne que he preparado para ellos, y dar todo eso a gente que no sé ni de donde son?»

and I have taken my bread, and my water, and my flesh, which I slaughtered for my shearers, and have given to men whom I have not known whence they!'

12 L os jóvenes volvieron y le dijeron a David lo que Nabal había dicho.

And the young men of David turn on their way, and turn back, and come in, and declare to him according to all these words.

13 E ntonces David dijo a sus hombres: «¡Tomen sus espadas!» Todos ellos lo hicieron así, lo mismo que David, y salieron tras David como cuatrocientos hombres, dejando con el bagaje a doscientos de ellos.

And David saith to his men, `Gird ye on each his sword;' and they gird on each his sword, and David also girdeth on his sword, and there go up after David about four hundred men, and two hundred have remained by the vessels.

14 P ero uno de los criados de Nabal fue a decirle a Abigaíl, su esposa: «Del desierto llegaron unos mensajeros enviados por David para saludar a nuestro amo, y él los ofendió.

And to Abigail wife of Nabal hath one young man of the youths declared, saying, `Lo, David hath sent messengers out of the wilderness to bless our lord, and he flieth upon them;

15 E sa gente nos ha tratado bien cuando hemos estado con ellos en el desierto; nunca nos trataron mal, ni nunca nos faltó nada cuando estuvimos en el campo.

and the men very good to us, and have not put us to shame, and we have not looked after anything all the days we have gone up and down with them, in our being in the field;

16 N os brindaron protección en todo momento, mientras apacentábamos las ovejas.

a wall they have been unto us both by night and by day, all the days of our being with them, feeding the flock.

17 P iensa bien lo que vas a hacer, porque David ha determinado darle un escarmiento a nuestro amo y a toda su familia. Nuestro amo es tan malvado, que ni siquiera se le puede hablar.»

`And, now, know and consider what thou dost; for evil hath been determined against our lord, and against all his house, and he too much a son of worthlessness to be spoken to.'

18 A bigaíl se dio prisa y cargó en varios asnos doscientos panes, dos odres de vino, cinco ovejas ya guisadas, cinco medidas de grano tostado, cien racimos de uvas pasas y doscientos panes de higos secos.

And Abigail hasteth, and taketh two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep, prepared, and five measures of roasted corn, and a hundred bunches of raisins, and two hundred bunches of figs, and setteth on the asses.

19 L uego les ordenó a sus criados: «Adelántense ustedes, que yo los alcanzaré después.» Pero de esto no le dijo nada a Nabal, su marido.

And she saith to her young men, `Pass over before me; lo, after you I am coming;' and to her husband Nabal she hath not declared;

20 M ontó en un asno y, cruzando por un sendero secreto del monte, fue al encuentro de David y sus hombres, que ya venían en dirección de ella.

and it hath come to pass, she is riding on the ass and is coming down in the secret part of the hill-country, and lo, David and his men are coming down to meet her, and she meeteth them.

21 D avid iba diciendo: «En vano hemos cuidado todo lo que Nabal tiene en el desierto. No le quitamos nada de lo suyo y, sin embargo, él nos paga mal por todo el bien que le hemos hecho.

And David said, `Only, in vain I have kept all that this hath in the wilderness, and nothing hath been looked after of all that he hath, and he turneth back to me evil for good;

22 ¡ Que Dios castigue a nuestros enemigos, y más aún! Pero entre hoy y mañana voy a destruir todas sus propiedades, y a todos sus hombres les quitaré la vida.»

thus doth God do to the enemies of David, and thus He doth add, if I leave of all that he hath till the light of the morning -- of those sitting on the wall.'

23 C uando Abigaíl vio a David, rápidamente se bajó del asno y se inclinó ante David sin levantar la vista,

And Abigail seeth David, and hasteth and cometh down from off the ass, and falleth before David on her face, and boweth herself to the earth,

24 l uego se arrojó a sus pies, mientras decía: «Señor mío, ¡que caiga sobre mí el pecado de mi esposo! Pero antes te ruego que me permitas hablar. ¡Escucha a tu humilde servidora!

and falleth at his feet and saith, `On me, my lord, the iniquity; and let, I pray thee, thy handmaid speak in thine ear, and hear the words of thy handmaid.

25 P or favor, no tomes en cuenta las palabras de Nabal, mi imprudente esposo. Le hace honor a su nombre, y siempre ha sido un imprudente. Pero cuando vinieron los jóvenes que tú enviaste, yo no los vi.

`Let not, I pray thee, my lord set his heart to this man of worthlessness, on Nabal, for as his name so he; Nabal his name, and folly with him; and I, thine handmaid, did not see the young men of my lord whom thou didst send;

26 S eñor mío, te juro por el Señor, y por ti mismo, que estoy segura que el Señor no quiere que derrames sangre, ni que tomes venganza. Que todos tus enemigos, incluyendo a Nabal, sean duramente castigados.

and now, my lord, Jehovah liveth, and thy soul liveth, in that Jehovah hath withheld thee from coming in with blood, and to save thy hand to thee -- now let thine enemies be as Nabal, even those seeking evil unto my lord.

27 M ira los presentes que tu servidora ha traído: son para los hombres que vienen contigo.

`And, now, this blessing which thy maid-servant hath brought to my lord -- it hath been given to the young men who are going up and down at the feet of my lord.

28 Y por favor, perdóname si te he ofendido; yo estoy segura que el Señor afirmará tu descendencia, porque tú peleas las batallas del Señor, y porque no has cometido ningún mal.

`Bear, I pray thee, with the transgression of thy handmaid, for Jehovah doth certainly make to my lord a stedfast house; for the battles of Jehovah hath my lord fought, and evil is not found in thee thy days.

29 A un si alguien te persigue y trata de matarte, tu vida está unida a los que viven conforme a la voluntad del Señor tu Dios; él destruirá a tus enemigos y los arrojará lejos, con la facilidad con que se arroja una piedra con la honda.

And man riseth to pursue thee and to seek thy soul, and the soul of my lord hath been bound in the bundle of life with Jehovah thy God; as to the soul of thine enemies, He doth sling them out in the midst of the hollow of the sling.

30 C uando el Señor te establezca como príncipe del pueblo de Israel, tal y como te lo ha prometido,

`And it hath been, when Jehovah doth to my lord according to all the good which He hath spoken concerning thee, and appointed thee for leader over Israel,

31 n ingún remordimiento empañará tu dicha, pues te contuviste y no derramaste sangre sin motivo, ni te vengaste por ti mismo. Que Dios te proteja, señor mío, y espero que te acuerdes de esta sierva tuya cuando el Señor te dé su bendición.»

that this is not to thee for a stumbling-block, and for an offence of heart to my lord -- either to shed blood for nought, or my lord's restraining himself; and Jehovah hath done good to my lord, and thou hast remembered thy handmaid.'

32 D avid le dijo a Abigaíl: «Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de Israel, que hoy te envió a mi encuentro.

And David saith to Abigail, `Blessed Jehovah, God of Israel, who hath sent thee this day to meet me,

33 Y bendigo a Dios por ti y por tu razonamiento, porque gracias a ellos me has impedido derramar sangre inocente y vengarme por mi propia mano.

and blessed thy discretion, and blessed thou in that thou hast restrained me this day from coming in with blood, and to restrain my hand to myself.

34 T e juro por el Señor, el Dios de Israel, que él me ha impedido hacerte daño. Si no te hubieras apresurado para venir a mi encuentro, entre hoy y mañana tu esposo Nabal se habría quedado sin sirvientes, pues todos habrían muerto.»

And yet, Jehovah liveth, God of Israel, who hath kept me back from doing evil with thee, for unless thou hadst hasted, and dost come to meet me, surely there had not been left to Nabal till the light of the morning, of those sitting on the wall.'

35 E ntonces David recibió de Abigaíl todo lo que ella le había llevado, y le dijo: «Regresa en paz a tu casa. Como puedes ver, he atendido tu advertencia y te he respetado.»

And David receiveth from her hand that which she hath brought to him, and to her he hath said, `Go up in peace to thy house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and accept thy face.'

36 C uando Abigaíl regresó, Nabal estaba celebrando en su casa un gran banquete, semejante al banquete de un rey, y estaba tan borracho y tan alegre que ella optó por no decirle nada hasta el día siguiente.

And Abigail cometh in unto Nabal, and lo, he hath a banquet in his house, like a banquet of the king, and the heart of Nabal glad within him, and he drunk unto excess, and she hath not declared to him anything, less or more, till the light of the morning.

37 P or la mañana, cuando a Nabal se le había pasado la borrachera, Abigaíl le contó su encuentro con David, y él se impresionó tanto que tuvo un ataque y se quedó paralizado.

And it cometh to pass in the morning, when the wine is gone out from Nabal, that his wife declareth to him these things, and his heart dieth within him, and he hath been as a stone.

38 D iez días después, el Señor hirió a Nabal con otro ataque, y éste murió.

And it cometh to pass, about ten days, that Jehovah smiteth Nabal, and he dieth,

39 Y al enterarse David de la muerte de Nabal, alabó al Señor y dijo: «Bendito sea el Señor, que me vengó de la humillación que me causó Nabal, y me libró de su maldad y se la devolvió a él.» Después, envió mensajeros para que le dijeran a Abigaíl que quería tomarla por esposa.

and David heareth that Nabal dead, and saith, `Blessed Jehovah who hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and His servant hath kept back from evil, and the wickedness of Nabal hath Jehovah turned back on his own head;' and David sendeth and speaketh with Abigail, to take her to him for a wife.

40 L os mensajeros fueron a Carmel y hablaron con Abigaíl. Le dijeron: «David nos ha enviado por ti, pues quiere que seas su esposa.»

And the servants of David come in unto Abigail at Carmel, and speak unto her, saying, `David hath sent us unto thee to take thee to him for a wife.'

41 E ntonces ella se levantó, inclinó su rostro a tierra, y dijo: «Aquí me tienen, dispuesta a lavar los pies de quienes sirven a mi señor.»

And she riseth and boweth herself -- face to the earth -- and saith, `Lo, thy handmaid for a maid-servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.'

42 L uego, Abigaíl tomó a cinco doncellas que le servían y, montando en un asno, siguió a los mensajeros de David para ser su esposa.

And Abigail hasteth and riseth, and rideth on the ass; and five of her young women who are going at her feet; and she goeth after the messengers of David, and is to him for a wife.

43 D avid también tomó por esposa a Ajinoán la jezreelita, y ambas fueron sus mujeres,

And Ahinoam hath David taken from Jezreel, and they are -- even both of them -- to him for wives;

44 p ues Saúl había dado su hija Mical, esposa de David, a Palti hijo de Lais, que era de Galín.

and Saul gave Michal his daughter, wife to David, to Phalti son of Laish, who of Gallim.
