1 D espués de todo esto, los jefes vinieron a verme y me dijeron: «Ni el pueblo de Israel, ni los sacerdotes ni los levitas, se diferencian en nada de los cananeos, hititas, ferezeos, jebuseos, amonitas, moabitas, egipcios y amorreos, pues incurren en los mismos actos repugnantes.

And at the completion of these things, drawn nigh unto me have the heads, saying, `The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not been separated from the peoples of the lands, as to their abominations, even the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, the Ammonite, the Moabite, the Egyptian, and the Amorite,

2 T anto ellos como sus hijos han tomado mujeres de esos pueblos, y el linaje sagrado del pueblo de Dios se ha mezclado con los pueblos de estas tierras. Lo peor es que los primeros en cometer este pecado han sido los gobernadores y los jefes importantes.»

for they have taken of their daughters to them, and to their sons, and the holy seed have mingled themselves among the peoples of the lands, and the hand of the heads and of the seconds have been first in this trespass.'

3 A l oír esto, me rasgué la ropa y el manto, me arranqué el cabello y la barba, y muy angustiado me senté en el suelo.

And at my hearing this word, I have rent my garment and my upper robe, and pluck out of the hair of my head, and of my beard, and sit astonished,

4 E ntonces se reunieron conmigo todos los que honraban las palabras del Dios de Israel, tristes por el pecado de los que habían vuelto del cautiverio, y mi angustia duró hasta la hora de los sacrificios de la tarde.

and unto me are gathered every one trembling at the words of the God of Israel, because of the trespass of the removal, and I am sitting astonished till the present of the evening.

5 A esa hora me levanté, afligido y con mi ropa y mi manto rasgados, y arrodillado levanté las manos al Señor mi Dios.

And at the present of the evening I have risen from mine affliction, and at my rending my garment and my upper robe, then I bow down on my knees, and spread out my hands unto Jehovah my God,

6 Y le dije: «Dios mío, estoy muy confundido y avergonzado. Me siento incapaz de levantar mi rostro hacia ti porque nuestra maldad ha aumentado; ¡nos ha rebasado hasta llegar al cielo!

and say, `O my God, I have been ashamed, and have blushed to lift up, O my God, my face unto Thee, for our iniquities have increased over the head, and our guilt hath become great unto the heavens.

7 D esde los días de nuestros antepasados, y hasta hoy, hemos vivido en la maldad. Por eso nosotros, y nuestros reyes y sacerdotes, hemos sido entregados en manos de los reyes de otras naciones; nos han robado, nos han hecho prisioneros, y hasta le fecha la vergüenza no se aparta de nosotros.

`From the days of our fathers we in great guilt unto this day, and in our iniquities we have been given -- we, our kings, our priests -- into the hand of the kings of the lands, with sword, with captivity, and with spoiling, and with shame of face, as this day.

8 A hora el Señor nuestro Dios ha tenido misericordia de nosotros, aunque sea por un poco de tiempo, y nos ha dejado a salvo un remanente; nos ha dado un lugar seguro en su santuario, para que veamos las cosas con claridad y podamos vivir un poco más, aunque sea en nuestra condición de esclavos.

`And now, as a small moment hath grace been from Jehovah our God, to leave to us an escape, and to give to us a nail in His holy place, by our God's enlightening our eyes, and by giving us a little quickening in our servitude;

9 H emos vivido en la servidumbre, pero dentro de ella Dios no nos ha desamparado, sino que por su misericordia ha hecho que los reyes de Persia nos concedan vida para poder reconstruir el templo de nuestro Dios y restaurar sus ruinas, y brindarnos protección en Judá y en Jerusalén.

for servants we, and in our servitude our God hath not forsaken us, and stretcheth out unto us kindness before the kings of Persia, to give to us a quickening to lift up the house of our God, and to cause its wastes to cease, and to give to us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

10 » ¿Pero qué te podemos decir ahora, Dios nuestro? Hemos abandonado tus mandamientos,

`And now, what do we say, O our God, after this? for we have forsaken Thy commands,

11 l os cuales nos diste por medio de tus siervos los profetas, cuando dijiste: “La tierra de la cual van a tomar posesión está llena de corrupción porque ahí habitan pueblos que han esparcido por toda la tierra sus prácticas repugnantes.

that Thou hast commanded by the hands of thy servants the prophets, saying, The land into which ye are going to possess it, a land of impurity, by the impurity of the people of the lands, by their abominations with which they have filled it -- from mouth unto mouth -- by their uncleanness;

12 P ero ustedes no dejarán que sus hijas se casen con los hijos de ellos, ni tampoco dejarán que los hijos de ustedes se casen con las hijas de ellos; ni procurarán que ellos vivan en paz y prosperen. Así ustedes serán fuertes y disfrutarán de las bondades de la tierra, y podrán dejársela a sus hijos como herencia.”

and now, your daughters ye do not give to their sons, and their daughters ye do not take to your sons, and ye do not seek their peace, and their good -- unto the age, so that ye are strong, and have eaten the good of the land, and given possession to your sons unto the age.

13 » A pesar de que hemos sufrido mucho por nuestras malas acciones, tú, Dios nuestro, no nos has castigado como merecen nuestras maldades; en cambio, a unos pocos de nosotros nos has dejado con vida.

`And after all that hath come upon us for our evil works, and for our great guilt (for Thou, O our God, hast kept back of the rod from our iniquities, and hast given to us an escape like this),

14 ¿ Cómo podríamos volver a desobedecer tus mandamientos y emparentar con pueblos que practican cosas que te repugnan? ¡Ciertamente tú te indignarías contra nosotros hasta consumirnos, y no quedaría uno solo de nosotros con vida!

do we turn back to break Thy commands, and to join ourselves in marriage with the people of these abominations? art not Thou angry against us -- even to consumption -- till there is no remnant and escaped part?

15 » Señor y Dios de Israel, tú eres justo, pues hasta este día unos pocos de nosotros hemos quedado con vida. Estamos aquí, en tu presencia, reconociendo nuestros pecados, aun cuando nadie podría permanecer en tu presencia sin ser castigado.»

`O Jehovah, God of Israel, righteous Thou, for we have been left an escape, as this day; lo, we before Thee in our guilt, for there is none to stand before Thee concerning this.'
