1 D espués de pasar por Anfípolis y Apolonia, llegaron a Tesalónica, donde había una sinagoga judía.

And having passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was the synagogue of the Jews,

2 P ablo fue entonces a la sinagoga, como era su costumbre, y durante tres días de reposo debatió con ellos. Con base en las Escrituras,

and according to the custom of Paul, he went in unto them, and for three sabbaths he was reasoning with them from the Writings,

3 l es aclaró y explicó que era necesario que Cristo padeciera y resucitara de los muertos. Les decía: «Jesús, a quien yo les anuncio, es el Cristo.»

opening and alleging, `That the Christ it behoved to suffer, and to rise again out of the dead, and that this is the Christ -- Jesus whom I proclaim to you.'

4 A lgunos de ellos creyeron y se unieron a Pablo y a Silas, lo mismo que muchos griegos piadosos y numerosas mujeres nobles.

And certain of them did believe, and attached themselves to Paul and to Silas, also of the worshipping Greeks a great multitude, of the principal women also not a few.

5 P ero los judíos que no creyeron se llenaron de envidia, así que lograron reunir a una turba de vagos y maleantes, y comenzaron a alborotar la ciudad, y en su búsqueda de Pablo Y Silas irrumpieron en la casa de Jasón, pues querían expulsarlos del pueblo.

And the unbelieving Jews, having been moved with envy, and having taken to them of the loungers certain evil men, and having made a crowd, were setting the city in an uproar; having assailed also the house of Jason, they were seeking them to bring to the populace,

6 C omo no los hallaron, llevaron a Jasón y a algunos hermanos ante las autoridades de la ciudad, mientras gritaban: «¡Esos que están trastornando el mundo entero, ya han llegado acá!

and not having found them, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the city rulers, calling aloud -- `These, having put the world in commotion, are also here present,

7 J asón los ha recibido, y todos sus seguidores desobedecen los decretos de César. Dicen que hay otro rey, y que se llama Jesús.»

whom Jason hath received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying another to be king -- Jesus.'

8 A l oír esto, el pueblo y las autoridades de la ciudad se alborotaron:

And they troubled the multitude and the city rulers, hearing these things,

9 p ero Jasón respondió por ellos, y los dejaron en libertad. Pablo y Silas en Berea

and having taking security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

10 E sa misma noche, los hermanos enviaron a Pablo y Silas hasta Berea. Y cuando éstos llegaron allá, entraron en la sinagoga de los judíos.

And the brethren immediately, through the night, sent forth both Paul and Silas to Berea, who having come, went to the synagogue of the Jews;

11 É stos eran más nobles que los de Tesalónica, pues recibieron la palabra con mucha atención, y todos los días examinaban las Escrituras para ver si era cierto lo que se les anunciaba.

and these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, they received the word with all readiness of mind, every day examining the Writings whether those things were so;

12 E ntre los que creyeron, había distinguidas mujeres griegas y un buen número de hombres.

many, indeed, therefore, of them did believe, and of the honourable Greek women and men not a few.

13 C uando los judíos de Tesalónica supieron que también en Berea Pablo anunciaba la palabra de Dios, fueron allá para alborotar a las multitudes.

And when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that also in Berea was the word of God declared by Paul, they came thither also, agitating the multitudes;

14 P ero de inmediato los hermanos enviaron a Pablo al mar, mientras Silas y Timoteo se quedaban allí.

and then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul, to go on as it were to the sea, but both Silas and Timothy were remaining there.

15 L os encargados de trasladar a Pablo lo llevaron a Atenas; y a Silas y a Timoteo les ordenaron que se reunieran con él tan pronto como pudieran, y así lo hicieron. Pablo en Atenas

And those conducting Paul, brought him unto Athens, and having received a command unto Silas and Timotheus that with all speed they may come unto him, they departed;

16 M ientras Pablo los esperaba en Atenas, su espíritu se enardeció al ver que la ciudad estaba entregada a la idolatría.

and Paul waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, beholding the city wholly given to idolatry,

17 P or eso en la sinagoga discutía con los judíos y con hombres piadosos, y también con todos los que a diario acudían a la plaza.

therefore, indeed, he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the worshipping persons, and in the market-place every day with those who met with him.

18 A lgunos filósofos de los epicúreos y de los estoicos discutían con él. Unos preguntaban: «¿De qué habla este parlanchín?» Y otros decían: «Es alguien que habla de dioses extranjeros.» Y es que les hablaba del evangelio de Jesús, y de la resurrección.

And certain of the Epicurean and of the Stoic philosophers, were meeting together to see him, and some were saying, `What would this seed picker wish to say?' and others, `Of strange demons he doth seem to be an announcer;' because Jesus and the rising again he did proclaim to them as good news,

19 E ntonces lo tomaron, lo llevaron al Areópago y le dijeron: «¿Nos puedes explicar qué es esta nueva enseñanza de la que hablas?

having also taken him, unto the Areopagus they brought, saying, `Are we able to know what this new teaching that is spoken by thee,

20 P orque esto suena extraño en nuestros oídos. Nos gustaría saber qué significa todo esto.»

for certain strange things thou dost bring to our ears? we wish, then, to know what these things would wish to be;'

21 ( Y es que a todos los atenienses y extranjeros que allí vivían, no les interesaba nada que no fuera decir o escuchar cosas novedosas.)

and all Athenians, and the strangers sojourning, for nothing else were at leisure but to say something, and to hear some newer thing.

22 P ablo se puso entonces en medio del Areópago, y dijo: «Varones atenienses, he observado que ustedes son muy religiosos.

And Paul, having stood in the midst of the Areopagus, said, `Men, Athenians, in all things I perceive you as over-religious;

23 P orque al pasar y observar sus santuarios, hallé un altar con esta inscripción: «Al Dios no conocido». Pues al Dios que ustedes adoran sin conocerlo, es el Dios que yo les anuncio.

for passing through and contemplating your objects of worship, I found also an erection on which had been inscribed: To God -- unknown; whom, therefore -- not knowing -- ye do worship, this One I announce to you.

24 E l Dios que hizo el mundo y todo lo que en él hay, es el Señor del cielo y de la tierra. No vive en templos hechos por manos humanas,

`God, who did make the world, and all things in it, this One, of heaven and of earth being Lord, in temples made with hands doth not dwell,

25 n i necesita que nadie le sirva, porque a él no le hace falta nada, pues él es quien da vida y aliento a todos y a todo.

neither by the hands of men is He served -- needing anything, He giving to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 D e un solo hombre hizo a todo el género humano, para que habiten sobre la faz de la tierra, y les ha prefijado sus tiempos precisos y sus límites para vivir,

He made also of one blood every nation of men, to dwell upon all the face of the earth -- having ordained times before appointed, and the bounds of their dwellings --

27 a fin de que busquen a Dios, y puedan encontrarlo, aunque sea a tientas. Pero lo cierto es que él no está lejos de cada uno de nosotros,

to seek the Lord, if perhaps they did feel after Him and find, -- though, indeed, He is not far from each one of us,

28 p orque en él vivimos, y nos movemos, y somos. Ya algunos poetas entre ustedes lo han dicho: “Porque somos linaje suyo.”

for in Him we live, and move, and are; as also certain of your poets have said: For of Him also we are offspring.

29 P uesto que somos linaje de Dios, no podemos pensar que la Divinidad se asemeje al oro o a la plata, o a la piedra o a esculturas artísticas, ni que proceda de la imaginación humana.

`Being, therefore, offspring of God, we ought not to think the Godhead to be like to gold, or silver, or stone, graving of art and device of man;

30 D ios, que ha pasado por alto esos tiempos de ignorancia, ahora quiere que todos, en todas partes, se arrepientan.

the times, indeed, therefore, of the ignorance God having overlooked, doth now command all men everywhere to reform,

31 P orque él ha establecido un día en que, por medio de aquel varón que escogió y que resucitó de los muertos, juzgará al mundo con justicia.»

because He did set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom He did ordain, having given assurance to all, having raised him out of the dead.'

32 C uando los allí presentes oyeron hablar de la resurrección de los muertos, unos se burlaban, y otros decían: «Ya te oiremos hablar de esto en otra ocasión.»

And having heard of a rising again of the dead, some, indeed, were mocking, but others said, `We will hear thee again concerning this;'

33 E ntonces Pablo se retiró de en medio de ellos;

and so Paul went forth from the midst of them,

34 p ero algunos le creyeron y se unieron a él. Entre ellos estaba Dionisio, que era miembro del areópago, una mujer llamada Dámaris, y otros más.

and certain men having cleaved to him, did believe, among whom also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman, by name Damaris, and others with them.
