1 P avel şi Sila au trecut prin Amfipoli şi Apolonia, şi au venit în Tesalonic, unde era o sinagogă a Iudeilor.

And having passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was the synagogue of the Jews,

2 P avel, după obiceiul său, a intrat în sinagogă. Trei zile de Sabat a vorbit cu ei din Scripturi,

and according to the custom of Paul, he went in unto them, and for three sabbaths he was reasoning with them from the Writings,

3 d ovedind şi lămurind, că Hristosul trebuia să pătimească şi să învieze din morţi.,,Şi acest Isus, pe care vi -L vestesc eu``, zicea el,,, este Hristosul.``

opening and alleging, `That the Christ it behoved to suffer, and to rise again out of the dead, and that this is the Christ -- Jesus whom I proclaim to you.'

4 U nii din ei, şi o mare mulţime de Greci temători de Dumnezeu, şi multe femei de frunte au crezut, şi au trecut de partea lui Pavel şi a lui Sila.

And certain of them did believe, and attached themselves to Paul and to Silas, also of the worshipping Greeks a great multitude, of the principal women also not a few.

5 D ar Iudeii cari nu crezuseră, de pizmă, au luat cu ei nişte oameni fără căpătîi din mulţime, au făcut gloată, şi au întărîtat cetatea. S'au năpustit asupra casei lui Iason, şi căutau pe Pavel şi pe Sila, ca să -i aducă afară la norod.

And the unbelieving Jews, having been moved with envy, and having taken to them of the loungers certain evil men, and having made a crowd, were setting the city in an uproar; having assailed also the house of Jason, they were seeking them to bring to the populace,

6 F iindcă nu i-au găsit, au tîrît pe Iason şi pe vreo cîţiva fraţi înaintea dregătorilor cetăţii, şi strigau:,, Oamenii aceştia, cari au răscolit lumea, au venit şi aici,

and not having found them, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the city rulers, calling aloud -- `These, having put the world in commotion, are also here present,

7 ş i Iason i -a găzduit. Ei toţi lucrează împotriva poruncilor Cezarului, şi spun că este un alt Împărat: Isus.``

whom Jason hath received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying another to be king -- Jesus.'

8 P rin aceste vorbe, Iudeii au turburat norodul şi pe dregătorii cetăţii,

And they troubled the multitude and the city rulers, hearing these things,

9 c ari au dat drumul lui Iason şi celorlalţi, numai după ce au căpătat dela ei un zălog.

and having taking security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

10 F raţii au trimes îndată, noaptea, pe Pavel şi pe Sila la Berea. Cînd au sosit, au intrat în sinagoga Iudeilor.

And the brethren immediately, through the night, sent forth both Paul and Silas to Berea, who having come, went to the synagogue of the Jews;

11 I udeii aceştia aveau o inimă mai aleasă decît cei din Tesalonic. Au primit Cuvîntul cu toată rîvna, şi cercetau Scripturile în fiecare zi, ca să vadă dacă ce li se spunea, este aşa.

and these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, they received the word with all readiness of mind, every day examining the Writings whether those things were so;

12 M ulţi dintre ei şi din femeile cu vază ale Grecilor, şi mulţi bărbaţi au crezut.

many, indeed, therefore, of them did believe, and of the honourable Greek women and men not a few.

13 D ar Iudeii din Tesalonic, cînd au aflat că Pavel vestea Cuvîntul lui Dumnezeu şi în Berea, au venit acolo, ca să turbure şi să aţîţe noroadele.

And when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that also in Berea was the word of God declared by Paul, they came thither also, agitating the multitudes;

14 A tunci fraţii au pornit îndată pe Pavel spre mare; Sila şi Timotei au rămas în Berea.

and then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul, to go on as it were to the sea, but both Silas and Timothy were remaining there.

15 C ei ce însoţeau pe Pavel, l-au dus pînă la Atena. Apoi s'au întors, cu însărcinarea să ducă lui Sila şi lui Timotei porunca să vină cît mai curînd la el.

And those conducting Paul, brought him unto Athens, and having received a command unto Silas and Timotheus that with all speed they may come unto him, they departed;

16 P e cînd îi aştepta Pavel în Atena, i se întărîta duhul la vederea acestei cetăţi pline de idoli.

and Paul waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, beholding the city wholly given to idolatry,

17 Î n sinagogă stătea deci de vorbă cu Iudeii şi cu oamenii temători de Dumnezeu, iar în piaţă stătea de vorbă în fiecare zi cu aceia pe cari -i întîlnea.

therefore, indeed, he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the worshipping persons, and in the market-place every day with those who met with him.

18 U nii din filosofii epicurieni şi stoici au intrat în vorbă cu el. Şi unii ziceau:,, Ce vrea să spună palavragiul acesta?`` Alţii, cînd l-au auzit că vesteşte pe Isus şi învierea, ziceau:,, Pare că vesteşte nişte dumnezei străini.``

And certain of the Epicurean and of the Stoic philosophers, were meeting together to see him, and some were saying, `What would this seed picker wish to say?' and others, `Of strange demons he doth seem to be an announcer;' because Jesus and the rising again he did proclaim to them as good news,

19 A tunci l-au luat, l-au dus la Areopag, şi au zis:,, Putem să ştim care este această învăţătură nouă, pe care o vesteşti tu?

having also taken him, unto the Areopagus they brought, saying, `Are we able to know what this new teaching that is spoken by thee,

20 F iindcă tu ne aduci ceva ciudat la auz. Am vrea dar să ştim ce vrea să zică aceasta.``

for certain strange things thou dost bring to our ears? we wish, then, to know what these things would wish to be;'

21 C ăci toţi Atenienii şi străinii, cari stăteau în Atena, nu-şi petreceau vremea cu nimic altceva decît să spună sau să asculte ceva nou.

and all Athenians, and the strangers sojourning, for nothing else were at leisure but to say something, and to hear some newer thing.

22 P avel a stat în picioare în mijlocul Areopagului, şi a zis:,, Bărbaţi Atenieni! În toate privinţele vă găsesc foarte religioşi.

And Paul, having stood in the midst of the Areopagus, said, `Men, Athenians, in all things I perceive you as over-religious;

23 C ăci, pe cînd străbăteam cetatea voastră şi mă uitam de aproape la lucrurile la cari vă închinaţi voi, am descoperit chiar şi un altar, pe care este scris:, Unui Dumnezeu necunoscut!` Ei bine, ceeace voi cinstiţi, fără să cunoaşteţi, aceea vă vestesc eu.

for passing through and contemplating your objects of worship, I found also an erection on which had been inscribed: To God -- unknown; whom, therefore -- not knowing -- ye do worship, this One I announce to you.

24 D umnezeu, care a făcut lumea şi tot ce este în ea, este Domnul cerului şi al pămîntului, şi nu locuieşte în temple făcute de mîni.

`God, who did make the world, and all things in it, this One, of heaven and of earth being Lord, in temples made with hands doth not dwell,

25 E l nu este slujit de mîni omeneşti, ca şi cînd ar avea trebuinţă de ceva, El, care dă tuturor viaţa, suflarea şi toate lucrurile.

neither by the hands of men is He served -- needing anything, He giving to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 E l a făcut ca toţi oamenii, ieşiţi dintr'unul singur, să locuiască pe toată faţa pămîntului; le -a aşezat anumite vremi şi a pus anumite hotare locuinţei lor,

He made also of one blood every nation of men, to dwell upon all the face of the earth -- having ordained times before appointed, and the bounds of their dwellings --

27 c a ei să caute pe Dumnezeu, şi să se silească să -L găsească bîjbăind, măcar că nu este departe de fiecare din noi.

to seek the Lord, if perhaps they did feel after Him and find, -- though, indeed, He is not far from each one of us,

28 C ăci în El avem viaţa, mişcarea şi fiinţa, după cum au zis şi unii din poeţii voştri:, Sîntem din neamul lui...`

for in Him we live, and move, and are; as also certain of your poets have said: For of Him also we are offspring.

29 A stfel dar, fiindcă sîntem de neam din Dumnezeu, nu trebuie să credem că Dumnezeirea este asemenea aurului sau argintului sau pietrei cioplite cu meşteşugirea şi iscusinţa omului.

`Being, therefore, offspring of God, we ought not to think the Godhead to be like to gold, or silver, or stone, graving of art and device of man;

30 D umnezeu nu ţine seama de vremurile de neştiinţă, şi porunceşte acum tuturor oamenilor de pretutindeni să se pocăiască;

the times, indeed, therefore, of the ignorance God having overlooked, doth now command all men everywhere to reform,

31 p entrucă a rînduit o zi, în care va judeca lumea după dreptate, prin Omul, pe care L -a rînduit pentru aceasta şi despre care a dat tuturor oamenilor o dovadă netăgăduită prin faptul că L -a înviat din morţi...``

because He did set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom He did ordain, having given assurance to all, having raised him out of the dead.'

32 C înd au auzit ei de învierea morţilor, unii îşi băteau joc, iar alţii au zis:,, Asupra acestor lucruri te vom asculta altădată.``

And having heard of a rising again of the dead, some, indeed, were mocking, but others said, `We will hear thee again concerning this;'

33 A stfel, Pavel a ieşit din mijlocul lor.

and so Paul went forth from the midst of them,

34 T otuş unii au trecut de partea lui, şi au crezut; între aceştia era Dionisie Areopagitul, o femeie numită Damaris, şi alţii împreună cu ei. Pavel la Corint.

and certain men having cleaved to him, did believe, among whom also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman, by name Damaris, and others with them.
