1 A tunci Isus, pe cînd cuvînta gloatelor şi ucenicilor Săi,

Then Jesus spake to the multitudes, and to his disciples,

2 a zis:,, Cărturarii şi Fariseii şed pe scaunul lui Moise.

saying, `On the seat of Moses sat down the scribes and the Pharisees;

3 D eci toate lucrurile, pe cari vă spun ei să le păziţi, păziţi-le şi faceţi-le; dar după faptele lor să nu faceţi. Căci ei zic, dar nu fac.

all, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not;

4 E i leagă sarcini grele şi cu anevoie de purtat, şi le pun pe umerii oamenilor, dar ei nici cu degetul nu vor să le mişte.

for they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.

5 T oate faptele lor le fac pentru ca să fie văzuţi de oameni. Astfel, îşi fac filacteriile late, îşi fac poalele veştmintelor cu ciucuri lungi;

`And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,

6 u mblă după locurile dintîi la ospeţe, şi după scaunele dintîi în sinagogi;

they love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

7 l e place să le facă oamenii plecăciuni prin pieţe, şi să le zică:, Rabi! Rabi!`

and the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

8 V oi să nu vă numiţi Rabi! Fiindcă Unul singur este Învăţătorul vostru: Hristos, şi voi toţi sînteţi fraţi.

`And ye -- ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director -- the Christ, and all ye are brethren;

9 Ş i, Tată` să nu numiţi pe nimeni pe pămînt; pentrucă Unul singur este Tatăl vostru: Acela care este în ceruri.

and ye may not call your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,

10 S ă nu vă numiţi, Dascăli`; căci Unul singur este Dascălul vostru: Hristosul.

nor may ye be called directors, for one is your director -- the Christ.

11 C el mai mare dintre voi să fie slujitorul vostru.

And the greater of you shall be your ministrant,

12 O ricine se va înălţa, va fi smerit; şi oricine se va smeri, va fi înălţat.

and whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13 V ai de voi, cărturari şi Farisei făţarnici! Pentrucă voi închideţi oamenilor Împărăţia cerurilor: nici voi nu intraţi în ea, şi nici pe cei ce vor să intre, nu -i lăsaţi să intre.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.

14 V ai de voi, cărturari şi Farisei făţarnici! Pentrucă voi mîncaţi casele văduvelor, în timp ce, de ochii lumii, faceţi rugăciuni lungi; de aceea veţi lua o mai mare osîndă.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.

15 V ai de voi, cărturari şi Farisei făţarnici! Pentrucă voi înconjuraţi marea şi pămîntul, ca să faceţi un tovarăş de credinţă; şi, după ce a ajuns tovarăş de credinţă, faceţi din el un fiu al gheenei, de două ori mai rău decît sînteţi voi înşivă.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen -- ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.

16 V ai de voi, povăţuitori orbi, cari ziceţi:, Dacă jură cineva pe Templu, nu este nimic; dar dacă jură pe aurul Templului, este legat de jurămîntul lui.`

`Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary -- is debtor!

17 N ebuni şi orbi! Care este mai mare: aurul sau Templul, care sfinţeşte aurul?

Fools and blind! for which greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?

18 D acă jură cineva pe altar, nu este nimic`,, dar dacă jură pe darul de pe altar, este legat de jurămîntul lui.`

`And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it -- is debtor!

19 N ebuni şi orbi! Care este mai mare: darul, sau altarul, care sfinţeşte darul?

Fools and blind! for which greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?

20 D eci, cine jură pe altar, jură pe el şi pe tot ce este deasupra lui;

`He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;

21 c ine jură pe Templu, jură pe el şi pe Celce locuieşte în el;

and he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;

22 ş i cine jură pe cer, jură pe scaunul de domnie al lui Dumnezeu şi pe Celce şade pe el.`

and he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it.

23 V ai de voi, cărturari şi Farisei făţarnici! Pentrucă voi daţi zeciuială din izmă, din mărar şi din chimen, şi lăsaţi nefăcute cele mai însemnate lucruri din Lege: dreptatea, mila şi credincioşia; pe acestea trebuia să le faceţi, şi pe acelea să nu le lăsaţi nefăcute.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law -- the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved to do, and those not to neglect.

24 P ovăţuitori orbi, cari strecuraţi ţînţarul şi înghiţiţi cămila!

`Blind guides! who are straining out the gnat, and the camel are swallowing.

25 V ai de voi, cărturari şi Farisei făţarnici! Pentru că voi curăţiţi partea de afară a paharului şi a blidului, dar înlăuntru sînt pline de răpire şi de necumpătare.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence.

26 F ariseu orb! Curăţă întîi partea din lăuntru a paharului şi a blidului, pentruca şi partea de afară să fie curată.

`Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.

27 V ai de voi, cărturari şi Farisei făţarnici! Pentrucă voi sînteţi ca mormintele văruite, cari, pe dinafară se arată frumoase, iar pe dinlăuntru sînt pline de oasele morţilor şi de orice fel de necurăţenie.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;

28 T ot aşa şi voi, pe dinafară vă arătaţi neprihăniţi oamenilor, dar pe dinlăuntru sînteţi plini de făţărnicie şi de fărădelege.

so also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 V ai de voi, cărturari şi Farisei făţarnici! Pentru că voi zidiţi mormintele proorocilor, împodobiţi gropile celor neprihăniţi,

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,

30 ş i ziceţi: Dacă am fi trăit noi în zilele părinţilor noştri, nu ne-am fi unit cu ei la vărsarea sîngelui proorocilor.

and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

31 P rin aceasta mărturisiţi despre voi înşivă că sînteţi fiii celor ce au omorît pe prooroci.

So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;

32 V oi dar umpleţi măsura părinţilor voştri!

and ye -- ye fill up the measure of your fathers.

33 Ş erpi, pui de năpîrci! Cum veţi scăpa de pedeapsa gheenei?

`Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?

34 D e aceea, iată, vă trimet prooroci, înţelepţi şi cărturari. Pe unii din ei îi veţi omorî şi răstigni, pe alţii îi veţi bate în sinagogile voastre, şi -i veţi prigoni din cetate în cetate;

`Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;

35 c a să vină asupra voastră tot sîngele nevinovat, care a fost vărsat pe pămînt, dela sîngele neprihănitului Abel pînă la sîngele lui Zaharia, fiul lui Barachia, pe care l-aţi omorît între Templu şi altar.

that on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar:

36 A devărat vă spun, că toate acestea vor veni peste neamul acesta.

verily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.

37 I erusalime, Ierusalime, care omori pe prooroci şi ucizi cu pietre pe cei trimeşi la tine! De cîte ori am vrut să strîng pe copiii tăi cum îşi strînge găina puii supt aripi, şi n'aţi vrut!

`Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.

38 I ată că vi se lasă casa pustie;

Lo, left desolate to you is your house;

39 c ăci vă spun că deacum încolo nu Mă veţi mai vedea pînă cînd veţi zice:, Binecuvîntat este Celce vine în Numele Domnului!``

for I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed he who is coming in the name of the Lord.'
