1 D ina, fata pe care o născuse lui Iacov Lea, a ieşit să vadă pe fetele ţării.

And Dinah, daughter of Leah, whom she hath borne to Jacob, goeth out to look on the daughters of the land,

2 E a a fost zărită de Sihem, fiul Hevitului Hamor, domnitorul ţării. El a pus mîna pe ea, s'a culcat cu ea şi a necinstit -o.

and Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite, a prince of the land, seeth her, and taketh her, and lieth with her, and humbleth her;

3 S 'a lipit cu toată inima de Dina, fata lui Iacov, a iubit fata, şi a căutat s'o liniştească.

and his soul cleaveth to Dinah, daughter of Jacob, and he loveth the young person, and speaketh unto the heart of the young person.

4 D upă aceea Sihem a zis tatălui său Hamor:,, Ia-mi de nevastă pe fata aceasta!``

And Shechem speaketh unto Hamor his father, saying, `Take for me this damsel for a wife.'

5 I acov a aflat că -i necinstise pe fiică-sa Dina; şi fiindcă fiii săi erau cu vitele la păşune, Iacov a tăcut pînă la întoarcerea lor.

And Jacob hath heard that he hath defiled Dinah his daughter, and his sons were with his cattle in the field, and Jacob kept silent till their coming.

6 H amor, tatăl lui Sihem, s'a dus la Iacov ca să -i vorbească.

And Hamor, father of Shechem, goeth out unto Jacob to speak with him;

7 D ar cînd s'au întors fiii lui Iacov dela păşune, şi au auzit lucrul acesta, s'au supărat şi s'au mîniat foarte tare; pentrucă Sihem săvîrşise o mişelie în Israel, culcîndu-se cu fata lui Iacov: aşa ceva n'ar fi trebuit să se facă niciodată.

and the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard, and the men grieve themselves, and it very displeasing to them, for folly he hath done against Israel, to lie with the daughter of Jacob -- and so it is not done.

8 H amor le -a vorbit astfel:,, Fiul meu Sihem s'a lipit cu toată inima de fata voastră; vă rog, daţi -i -o de nevastă,

And Hamor speaketh with them, saying, `Shechem, my son, his soul hath cleaved to your daughter; give her, I pray you, to him for a wife,

9 ş i încuscriţi-vă cu noi; voi daţi-ne fetele voastre, şi luaţi pentru voi pe ale noastre.

and join ye in marriage with us; your daughters ye give to us, and our daughters ye take to yourselves,

10 L ocuiţi cu noi; ţara vă stă înainte, rămîneţi în ea, faceţi negoţ şi cumpăraţi pămînturi în ea.``

and with us ye dwell, and the land is before you; dwell ye and trade it, and have possessions in it.'

11 S ihem a zis tatălui şi fraţilor Dinei:,, Să capăt trecere înaintea voastră, şi vă voi da ce-mi veţi cere.

And Shechem saith unto her father, and unto her brethren, `Let me find grace in your eyes, and that which ye say unto me, I give;

12 C ereţi-mi o zestre cît de mare şi cît de multe daruri, şi voi da tot ce-mi veţi zice; numai daţi-mi fata de nevastă.``

multiply on me exceedingly dowry and gift, and I give as ye say unto me, and give to me the young person for a wife.'

13 F iii lui Iacov au răspuns, şi au vorbit cu vicleşug lui Sihem şi tatălui său Hamor, pentrucă Sihem necinstise pe sora lor Dina.

And the sons of Jacob answer Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and they speak (because he defiled Dinah their sister),

14 E i i-au zis:,, Este un lucru pe care nu -l putem face să dăm pe sora noastră unui om netăiat împrejur; căci ar fi o ocară pentru noi.

and say unto them, `We are not able to do this thing, to give our sister to one who hath a foreskin: for it a reproach to us.

15 N u ne vom învoi la aşa ceva decît dacă vă faceţi şi voi ca noi, şi dacă orice parte bărbătească dintre voi se va tăia împrejur.

`Only for this we consent to you; if ye be as we, to have every male of you circumcised,

16 A tunci vă vom da pe fetele noastre, şi vom lua pentru noi pe ale voastre; vom locui cu voi, şi vom face împreună un singur norod.

then we have given our daughters to you, and your daughters we take to ourselves, and we have dwelt with you, and have become one people;

17 D ar dacă nu voiţi să ne ascultaţi şi să vă tăiaţi împrejur, ne vom lua fata şi vom pleca.``

and if ye hearken not unto us to be circumcised, then we have taken our daughter, and have gone.'

18 C uvintele lor au plăcut lui Hamor şi lui Sihem, fiul lui Hamor.

And their words are good in the eyes of Hamor, and in the eyes of Shechem, Hamor's son;

19 T înărul n'a pregetat să facă lucrul acesta, căci iubea pe fata lui Iacov, şi era cel mai bine văzut în casa tatălui său.

and the young man delayed not to do the thing, for he had delight in Jacob's daughter, and he is honourable above all the house of his father.

20 H amor şi fiul lui Sihem s'au dus la poarta cetăţii, şi au vorbit astfel oamenilor din cetatea lor:

And Hamor cometh -- Shechem his son also -- unto the gate of their city, and they speak unto the men of their city, saying,

21 O amenii aceştia au gînduri de pace faţă de noi; să rămînă dar în ţară, şi să facă negoţ; ţara este destul de largă pentru ei. Noi vom lua de neveste pe fetele lor, şi le vom da de neveste pe fetele noastre.

`These men are peaceable with us; then let them dwell in the land, and trade it; and the land, lo, wide before them; their daughters let us take to ourselves for wives, and our daughters give to them.

22 D ar oamenii aceştia nu vor voi să locuiască împreună cu noi, ca să alcătuim un singur popor, decît dacă orice parte bărbătească dintre noi se va tăia împrejur, după cum şi ei înşişi sînt tăiaţi împrejur.

`Only for this do the men consent to us, to dwell with us, to become one people, in every male of us being circumcised, as they are circumcised;

23 T urmele lor, averile lor şi toate vitele lor, vor fi atunci ale noastre. Să primim numai ce cer ei, ca să rămînă la noi.``

their cattle, and their substance, and all their beasts -- are they not ours? only let us consent to them, and they dwell with us.'

24 T oţi ceice treceau pe poarta cetăţii, au ascultat pe Hamor şi pe fiul său Sihem; şi toţi bărbaţii au fost tăiaţi împrejur, toţi ceice treceau pe poarta cetăţii.

And unto Hamor, and unto Shechem his son, hearken do all those going out of the gate of his city, and every male is circumcised, all those going out of the gate of his city.

25 A treia zi, pe cînd sufereau ei încă, cei doi fii ai lui Iacov, Simeon şi Levi, fraţii Dinei, şi-au luat fiecare sabia, s'au năpustit asupra cetăţii, care se credea în linişte, şi au ucis pe toţi bărbaţii.

And it cometh to pass, on the third day, in their being pained, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, take each his sword, and come in against the city confidently, and slay every male;

26 A u trecut de asemenea prin ascuţişul săbiei pe Hamor şi pe fiul său Sihem; au ridicat pe Dina din casa lui Sihem, şi au ieşit afară.

and Hamor, and Shechem his son, they have slain by the mouth of the sword, and they take Dinah out of Shechem's house, and go out.

27 F iii lui Iacov s'au aruncat asupra celor morţi, şi au jăfuit cetatea, pentrucă necinstiseră pe sora lor.

Jacob's sons have come in upon the wounded, and they spoil the city, because they had defiled their sister;

28 L e-au luat oile, boii şi măgarii, tot ce era în cetate şi ce era pe cîmp;

their flock and their herd, and their asses, and that which in the city, and that which in the field, have they taken;

29 l e-au luat ca pradă de război toate bogăţiile, copiii şi nevestele, şi tot ce se găsea în case.

and all their wealth, and all their infants, and their wives they have taken captive, and they spoil also all that in the house.

30 A tunci Iacov a zis lui Simeon şi lui Levi:,, Voi m'aţi nenorocit, făcîndu-mă urît locuitorilor ţării, Cananiţilor şi Feresiţilor. N'am supt porunca mea decît un mic număr de oameni; ei se vor strînge împotriva mea, mă vor bate, şi voi fi nimicit, eu şi casa mea.``

And Jacob saith unto Simeon and unto Levi, `Ye have troubled me, by causing me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanite, and among the Perizzite: and I few in number, and they have been gathered against me, and have smitten me, and I have been destroyed, I and my house.'

31 E i au răspuns:,, Se cuvenea oare să se poarte cu sora noastră cum se poartă cu o curvă?``

And they say, `As a harlot doth he make our sister?'
