1 S amuel a zis lui Saul:,, Pe mine m'a trimes Domnul să te ung împărat peste poporul Lui, peste Israel: Ascultă dar ce zice Domnul.

And Samuel saith unto Saul, `Me did Jehovah send to anoint thee for king over His people, over Israel; and now, hearken to the voice of the words of Jehovah:

2 A şa vorbeşte Domnul oştirilor:, Mi-aduc aminte de ceeace a făcut Amalec lui Israel, cînd i -a astupat drumul la ieşirea lui din Egipt.

`Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, I have looked after that which Amalek did to Israel, that which he laid for him in the way in his going up out of Egypt.

3 D u-te acum, bate pe Amalec, şi nimiceşte cu desăvîrşire tot ce -i al lui; să nu -i cruţi, şi să omori bărbaţii şi femeile, copiii şi pruncii, cămilele şi măgarii, boii şi oile.``

Now, go, and thou hast smitten Amalek, and devoted all that it hath, and thou hast no pity on it, and hast put to death from man unto woman, from infant unto suckling, from ox unto sheep, from camel unto ass.'

4 S aul a adunat poporul, şi l -a numărat la Telaim: erau două sute de mii de oameni pedeştri, şi zece mii de oameni din Iuda.

And Saul summoneth the people, and inspecteth them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

5 S aul a mers pînă la cetatea lui Amalec, şi a pus nişte oameni la pîndă în vale.

And Saul cometh in unto a city of Amalek, and layeth wait in a valley;

6 Ş i a zis Cheniţilor:,, Duceţi-vă, plecaţi şi ieşiţi din mijlocul lui Amalec, ca să nu vă prăpădesc împreună cu el; căci... voi v'aţi purtat cu bunăvoinţă faţă de copiii lui Israel, cînd s'au suit din Egipt``. Şi Cheniţii au plecat din mijlocul lui Amalec.

and Saul saith unto the Kenite, `Go, turn aside, go down from the midst of Amalek, lest I consume thee with it, and thou didst kindness with all the sons of Israel, in their going up out of Egypt;' and the Kenite turneth aside from the midst of Amalek.

7 S aul a bătut pe Amalec, dela Havila pînă la Şur..., care este în faţa Egiptului.

And Saul smiteth Amalek from Havilah -- thy going in to Shur, which on the front of Egypt,

8 A prins viu pe Agag, împăratul lui Amalec, şi a nimicit cu desăvîrşire tot poporul, trecîndu -l prin ascuţişul săbiei.

and he catcheth Agag king of Amalek alive, and all the people he hath devoted by the mouth of the sword;

9 D ar Saul şi poporul au cruţat pe Agag, şi oile cele mai bune, boii cei mai buni, vitele grase, mieii graşi, şi tot ce era mai bun; n'a vrut să le nimicească cu desvîrşire şi au nimicit numai tot ce era prost şi nebăgat în seamă.

and Saul hath pity -- also the people -- on Agag, and on the best of the flock, and of the herd, and of the seconds, and on the lambs, and on all that good, and have not been willing to devote them; and all the work, despised and wasted -- it they devoted.

10 D omnul a vorbit lui Samuel, şi i -a zis:

And the word of Jehovah is unto Samuel, saying,

11 m i pare rău că am pus pe Saul împărat, căci se abate dela Mine şi nu păzeşte... cuvintele Mele``. Samuel s'a mîhnit......, şi toată noaptea a strigat către Domnul.

`I have repented that I caused Saul to reign for king, for he hath turned back from after Me, and My words he hath not performed;' and it is displeasing to Samuel, and he crieth unto Jehovah all the night.

12 S 'a sculat dis de dimineaţă, ca să se ducă înaintea lui Saul. Şi au venit şi i-au spus:,, Saul s'a dus la Carmel, şi iată că şi -a înălţat un semn de biruinţă, apoi s'a întors, şi, trecînd mai departe, s'a pogorît la Ghilgal``.

And Samuel riseth early to meet Saul in the morning, and it is declared to Samuel, saying, `Saul hath come in to Carmel, and lo, he is setting up to himself a monument, and goeth round, and passeth over, and goeth down to Gilgal.'

13 S amuel s'a dus la Saul, şi Saul i -a zis:,, Fii binecuvîntat de Domnul! Am păzit cuvîntul Domnului``.

And Samuel cometh in unto Saul, and Saul saith to him, `Blessed thou of Jehovah; I have performed the word of Jehovah.'

14 S amuel a zis:,, Ce înseamnă behăitul acesta de oi care ajunge la urechile mele, şi mugetul acesta de boi pe care -l aud?``

And Samuel saith, `And what the noise of this flock in mine ears -- and the noise of the herd which I am hearing?'

15 S aul a răspuns:,, Le-au adus dela Amaleciţi, pentrucă poporul a cruţat oile cele mai bune şi boii cei mai buni, ca să -i jertfească Domnului, Dumnezeului tău; iar pe celelate, le-am nimicit cu desăvîrşire``.

And Saul saith, `From Amalek they have brought them, because the people had pity on the best of the flock, and of the herd, in order to sacrifice to Jehovah thy God, and the remnant we have devoted.'

16 S amuel a zis lui Saul:,, Stai, şi-ţi voi spune ce mi -a zis Domnul astănoapte``. Şi Saul i -a zis:,, Vorbeşte``.

And Samuel saith unto Saul, `Desist, and I declare to thee that which Jehovah hath spoken unto me to-night;' and he saith to him, `Speak.'

17 S amuel a zis:,, Cînd erai mic în ochii tăi, n'ai ajuns tu căpetenia seminţiilor lui Israel, şi nu te -a uns Domnul ca să fii împărat peste Israel?

And Samuel saith, `Art not thou, if thou little in thine own eyes, head of the tribes of Israel? and Jehovah doth anoint thee for king over Israel,

18 D omnul te trimisese, zicînd:, Du-te, şi nimiceşte cu desăvîrşire pe păcătoşii aceia, pe Amaleciţi; războieşte-te cu ei pînă îi vei nimici`.

and Jehovah sendeth thee in the way, and saith, Go, and thou hast devoted the sinners, the Amalekite, and fought against them till they are consumed;

19 P entruce n'ai ascultat glasul Domnului? Pentruce te-ai aruncat asupra prăzii, şi ai făcut ce este rău înaintea Domnului?``

and why hast thou not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah -- and dost fly unto the spoil, and dost do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah?'

20 S aul a răspuns lui Samuel:,, Am ascultat glasul Domnului, şi m'am dus în calea pe care mă trimetea Domnul. Am adus pe Agag, împăratul lui Amalec, şi am nimicit cu desăvîrşire pe Amaleciţi;

And Saul saith unto Samuel, `Because -- I have hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and I go in the way which Jehovah hath sent me, and bring in Agag king of Amalek, and Amalek I have devoted;

21 d ar poporul a luat din pradă oi şi boi, ca pîrgă din ceeace trebuia nimicit cu desăvîrşire, ca să le jertfească Domnului, Dumnezeului tău, la Ghilgal``.

and the people taketh of the spoil of the flock and herd, the first part of the devoted thing, for sacrifice to Jehovah thy God in Gilgal.'

22 S amuel a zis:,,Îi plac Domnului mai mult arderile de tot şi jertfele decît ascultarea de glasul Domnului? Ascultarea face mai mult decît jertfele, şi păzirea cuvîntului Său face mai mult decît grăsimea berbecilor.

And Samuel saith, `Hath Jehovah had delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices as hearkening to the voice of Jehovah? lo, hearkening than sacrifice is better; to give attention than fat of rams;

23 C ăci neascultarea este tot atît de vinovată ca ghicirea, şi împotrivirea nu este mai puţin vinovată decît închinarea la idoli şi terafimii. Fiindcă ai lepădat cuvîntul Domnului, te leapădă şi El ca împărat``.

for a sin of divination rebellion, and iniquity and teraphim stubbornness; because thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, He also doth reject thee from king.'

24 A tunci Saul a zis lui Samuel:,, Am păcătuit, căci am călcat porunca Domnului, şi n'am ascultat cuvintele tale; mă temeam de popor, şi i-am ascultat glasul.

And Saul saith unto Samuel, `I have sinned, for I passed over the command of Jehovah, and thy words; because I have feared the people, I also hearken to their voice;

25 A cum, te rog, iartă-mi păcatul, întoarce-te cu mine, ca să mă închin pînă la pămînt înaintea Domnului.``

and now, bear, I pray thee, with my sin, and turn back with me, and I bow myself to Jehovah.'

26 S amuel a zis lui Saul:,, Nu mă voi întoarce cu tine: fiindcă ai lepădat cuvîntul Domnului, şi Domnul te leapădă, ca să nu mai fii împărat peste Israel``.

And Samuel saith unto Saul, `I do not turn back with thee; for thou hast rejected the word of Jehovah, and Jehovah doth reject thee from being king over Israel.'

27 Ş i pe cînd se întorcea Samuel să plece, Saul l -a apucat de pulpana hainei, şi s'a rupt.

And Samuel turneth round to go, and he layeth hold on the skirt of his upper robe -- and it is rent!

28 S amuel i -a zis:,, Domnul rupe astăzi domnia lui Israel deasupra ta, şi o dă altuia mai bun decît tine.

And Samuel saith unto him, `Jehovah hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee to-day, and given it to thy neighbour who is better than thou;

29 C el ce este tăria lui Israel nu minte şi nu Se căieşte, căci nu este un om ca să -I pară rău.``

and also, the Pre-eminence of Israel doth not lie nor repent, for He not a man to be penitent.'

30 S aul a zis iarăş:,, Am păcătuit! Acum, te rog, cinsteşte-mă în faţa bătrînilor poporului meu, şi în faţa lui Israel; întoarce-te cu mine, ca să mă închin înaintea Domnului, Dumnezeului tău.``

And he saith, `I have sinned; now, honour me, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn back with me; and I have bowed myself to Jehovah thy God.'

31 S amuel s'a întors şi a mers după Saul, şi Saul s'a închinat înaintea Domnului.

And Samuel turneth back after Saul, and Saul boweth himself to Jehovah;

32 A poi Samuel a zis:,, Adu-mi pe Agag, împăratul lui Amalec.`` Şi Agag a înaintat vesel spre el, căci zicea:,, Negreşit, a trecut amărăciunea morţii!``

and Samuel saith, `Bring ye nigh unto me Agag king of Amalek,' and Agag cometh unto him daintily, and Agag saith, `Surely the bitterness of death hath turned aside.'

33 S amuel a zis:,, După cum sabia ta a lăsat femei fără copii, tot aşa şi mama ta va fi lăsată fără copii între femei.`` Şi Samuel a tăiat pe Agag în bucăţi înaintea Domnului, la Ghilgal.

And Samuel saith, `As thy sword bereaved women -- so is thy mother bereaved above women;' and Samuel heweth Agag in pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal.

34 S amuel a plecat la Rama, şi Saul s'a suit acasă la Ghibea lui Saul.

And Samuel goeth to Ramath, and Saul hath gone unto his house -- to Gibeah of Saul.

35 S amuel nu s'a mai dus să vadă pe Saul pînă în ziua morţii sale. Dar Samuel plîngea pe Saul, pentrucă Domnul... Se căise că pusese pe Saul împărat peste Israel.

And Samuel hath not added to see Saul till the day of his death, for Samuel mourned for Saul, and Jehovah repented that He had caused Saul to reign over Israel.
