1 Î n anul următor, pe vremea cînd porneau împăraţii la război, David a trimes pe Ioab, cu slujitorii lui şi tot Israelul, să pustiască ţara lui Amon şi să împresoare Raba. Dar David a rămas la Ierusalim.

And it cometh to pass, at the revolution of the year -- at the time of the going out of the messengers -- that David sendeth Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel, and they destroy the Bene-Ammon, and lay siege against Rabbah. And David is dwelling in Jerusalem,

2 Î ntr'o după amiază spre seară, David s'a sculat de pe pat; şi pe cînd se plimba pe acoperişul casei împărăteşti, a zărit de acolo o femeie care se scălda şi care era foarte frumoasă la chip.

and it cometh to pass, at evening-time, that David riseth from off his couch, and walketh up and down on the roof of the king's house, and seeth from the roof a woman bathing, and the woman of very good appearance,

3 D avid a întrebat cine este femeia aceasta, şi i-au spus:,, Este Bat-Şeba, fata lui Eliam, nevasta lui Urie, Hetitul.``

and David sendeth and inquireth about the woman, and saith, `Is not this Bath-Sheba, daughter of Eliam, wife of Uriah the Hittite?'

4 Ş i David a trimes nişte oameni s'o aducă. Ea a venit la el, şi el s'a culcat cu ea. După ce s'a curăţit de necurăţia ei, ea s'a întors acasă.

And David sendeth messengers, and taketh her, and she cometh unto him, and he lieth with her -- and she is purifying herself from her uncleanness -- and she turneth back unto her house;

5 F emeia a rămas însărcinată şi a trimes vorbă lui David, zicînd:,, Sînt însărcinată.``

and the woman conceiveth, and sendeth, and declareth to David, and saith, `I conceiving.'

6 A tunci David a trimes următoarea poruncă lui Ioab:,, Trimete-mi pe Urie, Hetitul.`` Şi Ioab a trimes pe Urie la David.

And David sendeth unto Joab, `Send unto me Uriah the Hittite,' and Joab sendeth Uriah unto David;

7 U rie a venit la David, care l -a întrebat despre starea lui Ioab, despre starea poporului, şi despre mersul războiului.

and Uriah cometh unto him, and David asketh of the prosperity of Joab, and of the prosperity of the people, and of the prosperity of the war.

8 A poi David a zis lui Urie:,, Pogoară-te acasă, şi spală-ţi picioarele.`` Urie a ieşit din casa împărătească, şi a fost urmat de un dar din partea împăratului.

And David saith to Uriah, `Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet;' and Uriah goeth out of the king's house, and there goeth out after him a gift from the king,

9 D ar Urie s'a culcat la poarta casei împărăteşti, cu toţi slujitorii stăpînului său, şi nu s'a pogorît acasă la el.

and Uriah lieth down at the opening of the king's house, with all the servants of his lord, and hath not gone down unto his house.

10 A u dat de ştire lui David despre aceasta, şi i-au spus:,, Urie nu s'a pogorît la el casă.`` Şi David a zis lui Urie:,, Nu vii tu oare din călătorie? Pentruce nu te-ai pogorît acasă?``

And they declare to David, saying, `Uriah hath not gone down unto his house;' and David saith unto Uriah, `Hast thou not come from a journey? wherefore hast thou not gone down unto thy house?'

11 U rie a răspuns lui David:,, Chivotul şi Israel şi Iuda locuiesc în corturi, domnul meu Ioab şi slujitorii domnului meu sînt tăbărîţi în cîmp, şi eu să intru în casă să mănînc şi să beau şi să mă culc cu nevastă-mea! Viu eşti tu şi viu este sufletul tău că nu voi face lucrul acesta.``

And Uriah saith unto David, `The ark, and Israel, and Judah, are abiding in booths, and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, on the face of the field are encamping; and I -- I go in unto my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife! -- thy life, and the life of thy soul -- if I do this thing.'

12 D avid a zis lui Urie:,, Mai rămîi şi astăzi aici, şi mîne îţi voi da drumul.`` Şi Urie a rămas la Ierusalim în ziua aceea şi a doua zi.

And David saith unto Uriah, `Abide in this also to-day, and to-morrow I send thee away;' and Uriah abideth in Jerusalem, on that day, and on the morrow,

13 D avid l -a poftit să mănînce şi să bea cu el, şi l -a îmbătat; şi seara. Urie a ieşit şi s'a culcat cu slujitorii stăpînului său, dar nu s'a pogorît acasă.

and David calleth for him, and he eateth before him, and drinketh, and he causeth him to drink, and he goeth out in the evening to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, and unto his house he hath not gone down.

14 A doua zi dimineaţa, David a scris o scrisoare lui Ioab, şi a trimes -o prin Urie.

And it cometh to pass in the morning, that David writeth a letter unto Joab, and sendeth by the hand of Uriah;

15 Î n scrisoarea aceasta scria:,, Puneţi pe Urie în locul cel mai greu al luptei, şi trageţi-vă înapoi dela el, ca să fie lovit şi să moară.``

and he writeth in the letter, saying, `Place ye Uriah over-against the front of the severest battle, and ye have turned back from after him, and he hath been smitten, and hath died.'

16 I oab, împresurînd cetatea, a pus pe Urie în locul pe care -l ştia apărat de ostaşi viteji.

And it cometh to pass in Joab's watching of the city, that he appointeth Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men;

17 O amenii din cetate au făcut o ieşire şi s'au bătut împotriva lui Ioab; au căzut mulţi din popor, din slujitorii lui David, şi a fost ucis şi Urie, Hetitul.

and the men of the city go out and fight with Joab, and there fall of the people, of the servants of David; and there dieth also Uriah the Hittite.

18 I oab a trimes un sol să istorisească lui David tot ce se petrecuse în luptă.

And Joab sendeth and declareth to David all the matters of the war,

19 Ş i a dat solului următoarea poruncă:,, Cînd vei isprăvi de istorisit împăratului toate amănuntele luptei,

and commandeth the messenger, saying, `At thy finishing all the matters of the war to speak unto the king,

20 p oate că se va mînia şi va zice:, Pentruce v'aţi apropiat de cetate să luptaţi împotriva ei? Nu ştiaţi că se aruncă săgeţi din vîrful zidului?

then, it hath been, if the king's fury ascend, and he hath said to thee, Wherefore did ye draw nigh unto the city to fight? did ye not know that they shoot from off the wall?

21 C ine a omorît pe Abimelec, fiul lui Ierubeşet? Nu o femeie, care a aruncat peste el din vîrful zidului o piatră de moară, şi n'a murit el la Tebeţ? Pentruce v-aţi apropiat de zid?` Atunci să -i spui:, A murit şi robul tău Urie, Hetitul.``

Who smote Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast on him a piece of a rider from the wall, and he dieth in Thebez? why drew ye nigh unto the wall? that thou hast said, Also thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.'

22 S olul a plecat; şi, la sosire, a istorisit lui David tot ce -i poruncise Ioab.

And the messenger goeth, and cometh in, and declareth to David all that with which Joab sent him,

23 S olul a zis lui David:,, Oamenii aceia au fost mai tari decît noi; făcuseră o ieşire împotriva noastră în cîmp, şi i-am dat înapoi noastră în cîmp, şi i-am dat înapoi pînă la intrarea porţii,

and the messenger saith unto David, `Surely the men have been mighty against us, and come out unto us into the field, and we are upon them unto the opening of the gate,

24 d ar arcaşii au tras de pe vîrful zidului asupra slujitorilor tăi, şi mulţi din slujitorii împăratului au fost ucişi, şi a murit şi robul tău Urie, Hetitul.``

and those shooting shoot at thy servants from off the wall, and of the servants of the king are dead, and also, thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.

25 D avid a zis solului:,, Iată ce să spui lui Ioab:, Nu te munci pentru întîmplarea aceasta, căci sabia doboară cînd pe unul, cînd pe altul; bate cetatea cu putere, dărîmă -o. Şi tu, îmbărbătează -l!``

And David saith unto the messenger, `Thus dost thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing be evil in thine eyes; for thus and thus doth the sword devour; strengthen thy warfare against the city, and throw it down -- and strengthen thou him.'

26 N evasta lui Urie a aflat că bărbatul ei murise, şi a plîns pe bărbatul ei.

And the wife of Uriah heareth that Uriah her husband dead, and lamenteth for her lord;

27 D upă ce au trecut zilele de jale, David a trimes s'o ia, şi a primit -o în casa lui. Ea i -a fost nevastă, şi i -a născut un fiu. Fapta lui David n'a plăcut Domnului.

and the mourning passeth by, and David sendeth and gathereth her unto his house, and she is to him for a wife, and beareth to him a son; and the thing which David hath done is evil in the eyes of Jehovah.
