1 A conteció al año siguiente, en el tiempo que salen los reyes a la guerra, que David envió a Joab, junto a sus siervos y a todo Israel, y ellos derrotaron a los amonitas y sitiaron a Rabá, mientras David se quedó en Jerusalén.

And it cometh to pass, at the revolution of the year -- at the time of the going out of the messengers -- that David sendeth Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel, and they destroy the Bene-Ammon, and lay siege against Rabbah. And David is dwelling in Jerusalem,

2 U n día, al caer la tarde, se levantó David de su lecho, y se paseaba sobre el terrado de la casa real, cuando vio desde el terrado a una mujer que se estaba bañando, la cual era muy hermosa.

and it cometh to pass, at evening-time, that David riseth from off his couch, and walketh up and down on the roof of the king's house, and seeth from the roof a woman bathing, and the woman of very good appearance,

3 E nvió David a preguntar por aquella mujer, y le dijeron: «Aquella es Betsabé, hija de Eliam, mujer de Urías, el heteo.»

and David sendeth and inquireth about the woman, and saith, `Is not this Bath-Sheba, daughter of Eliam, wife of Uriah the Hittite?'

4 E nvió David mensajeros que la trajeran, y la tomó; cuando llegó, él durmió con ella. Luego ella se purificó de su inmundicia, y regresó a su casa.

And David sendeth messengers, and taketh her, and she cometh unto him, and he lieth with her -- and she is purifying herself from her uncleanness -- and she turneth back unto her house;

5 L a mujer concibió y mandó a decir a David: «Estoy encinta.»

and the woman conceiveth, and sendeth, and declareth to David, and saith, `I conceiving.'

6 E ntonces David envió a decir a Joab: «Envíame a Urías, el heteo.» Y Joab envió a Urías a David.

And David sendeth unto Joab, `Send unto me Uriah the Hittite,' and Joab sendeth Uriah unto David;

7 C uando Urías llegó ante él, David le preguntó por la salud de Joab, por la salud del pueblo y por la marcha de la guerra.

and Uriah cometh unto him, and David asketh of the prosperity of Joab, and of the prosperity of the people, and of the prosperity of the war.

8 D espués dijo David a Urías: «Desciende a tu casa, y lava tus pies.» Cuando Urías salió de la casa del rey, le enviaron un presente de la mesa real.

And David saith to Uriah, `Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet;' and Uriah goeth out of the king's house, and there goeth out after him a gift from the king,

9 P ero Urías durmió a la puerta de la casa del rey, con todos los guardias de su señor, y no descendió a su casa.

and Uriah lieth down at the opening of the king's house, with all the servants of his lord, and hath not gone down unto his house.

10 L e hicieron saber esto a David diciendo: «Urías no ha descendido a su casa.» Entonces David dijo a Urías: —¿Acaso no vienes de viaje? ¿Por qué, pues, no descendiste a tu casa?

And they declare to David, saying, `Uriah hath not gone down unto his house;' and David saith unto Uriah, `Hast thou not come from a journey? wherefore hast thou not gone down unto thy house?'

11 U rías respondió a David: —El Arca, Israel y Judá habitan bajo tiendas; mi señor Joab y los siervos de mi señor, en el campo; ¿cómo iba yo a entrar en mi casa para comer y beber, y dormir con mi mujer? ¡Por vida tuya y por vida de tu alma, nunca haré tal cosa!

And Uriah saith unto David, `The ark, and Israel, and Judah, are abiding in booths, and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, on the face of the field are encamping; and I -- I go in unto my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife! -- thy life, and the life of thy soul -- if I do this thing.'

12 D avid dijo entonces a Urías: —Quédate aquí hoy también, y mañana te despediré. Se quedó Urías aquel día y el siguiente en Jerusalén.

And David saith unto Uriah, `Abide in this also to-day, and to-morrow I send thee away;' and Uriah abideth in Jerusalem, on that day, and on the morrow,

13 D avid lo convidó a comer y a beber con él hasta embriagarlo. Por la tarde salió a dormir en su cama, junto a los guardias de su señor; pero no descendió a su casa.

and David calleth for him, and he eateth before him, and drinketh, and he causeth him to drink, and he goeth out in the evening to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, and unto his house he hath not gone down.

14 A la mañana siguiente, escribió David una carta a Joab, la cual envió por mano de Urías.

And it cometh to pass in the morning, that David writeth a letter unto Joab, and sendeth by the hand of Uriah;

15 E n ella decía: «Poned a Urías al frente, en lo más recio de la batalla, y alejaos de él, para que sea herido y muera.»

and he writeth in the letter, saying, `Place ye Uriah over-against the front of the severest battle, and ye have turned back from after him, and he hath been smitten, and hath died.'

16 A sí, cuando Joab sitió la ciudad, puso a Urías en el lugar donde sabía que estaban los hombres más valientes.

And it cometh to pass in Joab's watching of the city, that he appointeth Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men;

17 S alieron los de la ciudad y pelearon contra Joab; cayeron algunos del ejército de los siervos de David, y murió también Urías, el heteo.

and the men of the city go out and fight with Joab, and there fall of the people, of the servants of David; and there dieth also Uriah the Hittite.

18 E ntonces Joab mandó a comunicar a David todos los asuntos de la guerra.

And Joab sendeth and declareth to David all the matters of the war,

19 Y dio esta orden al mensajero: «Cuando acabes de contar al rey todos los asuntos de la guerra,

and commandeth the messenger, saying, `At thy finishing all the matters of the war to speak unto the king,

20 s i el rey comienza a enojarse, y te dice: “¿Por qué os habéis acercado tanto a la ciudad para combatir? ¿No sabíais lo que suelen tirar desde el muro?

then, it hath been, if the king's fury ascend, and he hath said to thee, Wherefore did ye draw nigh unto the city to fight? did ye not know that they shoot from off the wall?

21 ¿ Quién hirió a Abimelec hijo de Jerobaal? ¿No arrojó una mujer desde el muro un pedazo de rueda de molino, y murió él en Tebes? ¿Por qué os habéis acercado tanto al muro?” Entonces tú le dirás: “También tu siervo Urías, el heteo, ha muerto.”»

Who smote Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast on him a piece of a rider from the wall, and he dieth in Thebez? why drew ye nigh unto the wall? that thou hast said, Also thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.'

22 P artió el mensajero y, al llegar, contó a David todo aquello que Joab le había mandado.

And the messenger goeth, and cometh in, and declareth to David all that with which Joab sent him,

23 D ijo el mensajero a David: —Pudieron más que nosotros los hombres que salieron al campo en contra nuestra, bien que les hicimos retroceder hasta la entrada de la puerta;

and the messenger saith unto David, `Surely the men have been mighty against us, and come out unto us into the field, and we are upon them unto the opening of the gate,

24 p ero los flecheros tiraron contra tus siervos desde el muro, y murieron algunos de los siervos del rey; también murió tu siervo Urías, el heteo.

and those shooting shoot at thy servants from off the wall, and of the servants of the king are dead, and also, thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.

25 D avid respondió al mensajero: —Así dirás a Joab: “No tengas pesar por esto, porque la espada consume, ora a uno, ora a otro; refuerza tu ataque contra la ciudad, hasta que la rindas.” Y tú aliéntale.

And David saith unto the messenger, `Thus dost thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing be evil in thine eyes; for thus and thus doth the sword devour; strengthen thy warfare against the city, and throw it down -- and strengthen thou him.'

26 A l oír la mujer de Urías que su marido Urías había muerto, hizo duelo por él.

And the wife of Uriah heareth that Uriah her husband dead, and lamenteth for her lord;

27 P asado el luto, envió David por ella, la trajo a su casa y la hizo su mujer; ella le dio a luz un hijo. Pero esto que David había hecho fue desagradable ante los ojos de Jehová.

and the mourning passeth by, and David sendeth and gathereth her unto his house, and she is to him for a wife, and beareth to him a son; and the thing which David hath done is evil in the eyes of Jehovah.
