1 D espués de estas cosas aconteció que murió Nahas, rey de los hijos de Amón, y reinó en su lugar su hijo.

And it cometh to pass after this, that Nahash king of the sons of Ammon dieth, and his son reigneth in his stead,

2 Y dijo David: «Tendré misericordia con Hanún hijo de Nahas, porque también su padre tuvo conmigo misericordia.» Así David envió embajadores para que lo consolaran de la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando llegaron los siervos de David a la tierra de los hijos de Amón, donde estaba Hanún, para consolarlo,

and David saith, `I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, for his father did with me kindness;' and David sendeth messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And the servants of David come in unto the land of the sons of Ammon, unto Hanun, to comfort him,

3 l os príncipes de los hijos de Amón dijeron a Hanún: «¿Según tu parecer ha enviado David a consolarte porque quiere honrar a tu padre? ¿No vienen más bien sus siervos a ti para espiar, examinar y reconocer la tierra?»

and the heads of the sons of Ammon say to Hanun, `Is David honouring thy father, in thine eyes, because he hath sent to thee comforters? in order to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out, the land, have not his servants come in unto thee?'

4 E ntonces Hanún tomó a los siervos de David y los rapó, les cortó los vestidos por la mitad, hasta las nalgas, y los despachó.

And Hanun taketh the servants of David, and shaveth them, and cutteth their long robes in the midst, unto the buttocks, and sendeth them away.

5 S e fueron luego, y cuando llegó a David la noticia sobre aquellos hombres, envió a recibirlos, porque estaban muy avergonzados. El rey mandó que les dijeran: «Quedaos en Jericó hasta que os crezca la barba, y entonces volveréis.»

And go, and declare to David concerning the men, and he sendeth to meet them -- for the men have been greatly ashamed -- and the king saith, `Dwell in Jericho till that your beard is grown, then ye have returned.'

6 A l ver los hijos de Amón que se habían hecho odiosos a David, Hanún y los hijos de Amón enviaron mil talentos de plata para tomar a sueldo carros y gente de a caballo de Mesopotamia, de Siria, de Maaca y de Soba.

And the sons of Ammon see that they have made themselves abhorred by David, and Hanun and the sons of Ammon send a thousand talents of silver, to hire to them, from Aram-Naharaim, and from Aram-Maachah, and from Zobah, chariots and horsemen;

7 Y tomaron a sueldo treinta y dos mil carros, y al rey de Maaca y a su ejército, los cuales vinieron y acamparon delante de Medeba. Y se reunieron también los hijos de Amón en sus ciudades y acudieron a la guerra.

and they hire to them two and thirty thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, and they come in and encamp before Medeba, and the sons of Ammon have been gathered out of their cities, and come in to the battle.

8 C uando David lo supo, envió a Joab con todo el ejército de los hombres valientes.

And David heareth, and sendeth Joab, and all the host of the mighty men,

9 L os amonitas salieron y ordenaron la batalla a la entrada de la ciudad; y los reyes que habían venido estaban aparte en el campo.

and the sons of Ammon come out and set battle in array at the opening of the city, and the kings who have come by themselves in the field.

10 Y viendo Joab que el ataque contra él había sido dispuesto por el frente y por la retaguardia, escogió de los más aventajados que había en Israel, y con ellos ordenó su ejército contra los sirios.

And Joab seeth that the front of the battle hath been unto him, before and behind, and he chooseth out of all the choice in Israel, and setteth in array to meet Aram,

11 P uso luego el resto de la gente al mando de Abisai, su hermano, y los organizó en orden de batalla contra los amonitas.

and the remnant of the people he hath given into the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set in array to meet the sons of Ammon.

12 Y dijo: «Si los sirios son más fuertes que yo, tú me ayudarás; y si los amonitas son más fuertes que tú, yo te ayudaré.

And he saith, `If Aram be stronger than I, then thou hast been to me for salvation; and if the sons of Ammon be stronger than thou, then I have saved thee;

13 E sfuérzate, y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo, y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y haga Jehová lo que bien le parezca.»

be strong, and we strengthen ourselves, for our people, and for the cities of our God, and Jehovah doth that which is good in His eyes.'

14 E ntonces avanzó Joab con el pueblo que traía consigo, para pelear contra los sirios; pero ellos huyeron delante de él.

And Joab draweth nigh, and the people who with him, before Aram to battle, and they flee from his face;

15 C uando los amonitas vieron que los sirios habían huido, huyeron también ellos delante de Abisai, hermano de Joab, y entraron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab volvió a Jerusalén.

and the sons of Ammon have seen that Aram hath fled, and they flee -- they also -- from the face of Abishai his brother, and go in to the city. And Joab cometh in to Jerusalem.

16 A l ver los sirios que habían caído delante de Israel, enviaron embajadores, y trajeron a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del Éufrates, cuyo capitán era Sofac, general del ejército de Hadad-ezer.

And Aram seeth that they have been smitten before Israel, and send messengers, and bring out Aram that beyond the River, and Shophach head of the host of Hadarezer before them.

17 L uego que fue dado aviso a David, reunió a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán, llegó adonde estaban y ordenó batalla contra ellos. David ordenó su tropa contra los sirios, y estos pelearon contra él.

And it is declared to David, and he gathereth all Israel, and passeth over the Jordan, and cometh in unto them, and setteth in array against them; yea, David setteth in array the battle to meet Aram, and they fight with him;

18 P ero el pueblo sirio huyó delante de Israel; y mató David de los sirios a siete mil hombres de los carros y cuarenta mil hombres de a pie; asimismo mató a Sofac, general del ejército.

and Aram fleeth from the face of Israel, and David slayeth of Aram seven thousand charioteers, and forty thousand footmen, and Shophach head of the host he hath put to death.

19 C uando los siervos de Hadad-ezer vieron que habían caído delante de Israel, concertaron paz con David y quedaron sometidos a él. A partir de entonces, el pueblo sirio nunca más quiso ayudar a los amonitas.

And the servants of Hadarezer see that they have been smitten before Israel, and they make peace with David and serve him, and Aram hath not been willing to help the sons of Ammon any more.
