1 S amuel hablaba a todo Israel. Por aquel tiempo salió Israel a librar batalla con los filisteos, y acampó junto a Eben-ezer, mientras los filisteos acamparon en Afec.

And the word of Samuel is to all Israel, and Israel goeth out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamp by Eben-Ezer, and the Philistines have encamped in Aphek,

2 L os filisteos presentaron batalla a Israel, y trabándose el combate, Israel fue vencido delante de los filisteos, los cuales hirieron en el campo de batalla como a cuatro mil hombres.

and the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreadeth itself, and Israel is smitten before the Philistines, and they smite among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.

3 C uando volvió el pueblo al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: «¿Por qué nos ha herido hoy Jehová delante de los filisteos? Vayamos a Silo y traigamos el Arca del pacto de Jehová, para que, estando en medio de nosotros, nos salve de manos de nuestros enemigos.»

And the people cometh in unto the camp, and the elders of Israel say, `Why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? we take unto us from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and it cometh into our midst, and He doth save us out of the hand of our enemies.'

4 E l pueblo envió gente a Silo, y trajeron de allá el Arca del pacto de Jehová de los ejércitos, que habitaba entre los querubines; y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, estaban allí con el Arca del pacto de Dios.

And the people sendeth to Shiloh, and they take up thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubs, and there two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.

5 A conteció que cuando el Arca del pacto de Jehová llegó al campamento, todo Israel gritó con júbilo tan grande que la tierra tembló.

And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto the camp, that all Israel shout -- a great shout -- and the earth is moved.

6 A l escuchar los filisteos las voces de júbilo dijeron: «¿Qué gritos de júbilo son estos en el campamento de los hebreos?» Y supieron que el Arca de Jehová había sido traída al campamento.

And the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, `What the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?' and they perceive that the ark of Jehovah hath come in unto the camp.

7 E ntonces los filisteos tuvieron miedo, porque se decían: «Ha venido Dios al campamento.» Y exclamaron: «¡Ay de nosotros!, pues hasta ahora no había sido así.

And the Philistines are afraid, for they said, `God hath come in unto the camp;' and they say, `Wo to us, for there hath not been like this heretofore.

8 ¡ Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de manos de estos dioses poderosos? Éstos son los dioses que hirieron a Egipto con toda clase de plagas en el desierto.

Wo to us, who doth deliver us out of the hand of these honourable gods? these the gods who are smiting the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.

9 E sforzaos, filisteos, y sed hombres, para que no sirváis a los hebreos, como ellos os han servido a vosotros; sed hombres, y pelead.»

Strengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest ye do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you -- then ye have become men, and have fought.'

10 P elearon, pues, los filisteos, e Israel fue vencido; cada cual huyó a su tienda y hubo una muy grande mortandad, pues cayeron de Israel treinta mil hombres de a pie.

And the Philistines fight, and Israel is smitten, and they flee each to his tents, and the blow is very great, and there fall of Israel thirty thousand footmen;

11 E l Arca de Dios fue tomada y murieron los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees.

and the ark of God hath been taken, and the two sons of Eli have died, Hophni and Phinehas.

12 U n hombre de Benjamín salió corriendo del campo de batalla y llegó aquel mismo día a Silo, rotos sus vestidos y la cabeza cubierta de tierra.

And a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes rent, and earth on his head;

13 C uando llegó, Elí estaba sentado en una silla vigilando junto al camino, porque su corazón temblaba a causa del Arca de Dios. Vino, pues, aquel hombre a la ciudad y, al dar las noticias, toda la ciudad gritó.

and he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare in the city, and all the city crieth out.

14 C uando Elí oyó el estruendo de la gritería, preguntó: —¿Por qué hay tanto alboroto? Aquel hombre vino de prisa y le dio las noticias a Elí.

And Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, `What -- the noise of this tumult!' And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.

15 Y a éste tenía noventa y ocho años de edad y sus ojos se habían oscurecido, de modo que no podía ver.

And Eli is a son of ninety and eight years, and his eyes have stood, and he hath not been able to see.

16 D ijo, pues, aquel hombre a Elí: —Vengo de la batalla, he escapado hoy del combate. —¿Qué ha acontecido, hijo mío? —le preguntó Elí.

And the man saith unto Eli, `I he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;' and he saith, `What hath been the matter, my son?'

17 E l mensajero respondió: —Israel huyó delante de los filisteos y hubo gran mortandad entre el pueblo. Han muerto también tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, y el Arca de Dios ha sido tomada.

And he who is bearing tidings answereth and saith, `Israel hath fled before the Philistines, and also a great slaughter hath been among the people, and also thy two sons have died -- Hophni and Phinehas -- and the ark of God hath been captured.'

18 C uando el mensajero hizo mención del Arca de Dios, Elí cayó de su silla hacia atrás, al lado de la puerta, y se desnucó y murió, pues era hombre viejo y pesado. Había sido juez en Israel durante cuarenta años.

And it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.

19 S u nuera, la mujer de Finees, estaba encinta y próxima al alumbramiento. Cuando oyó el rumor de que el Arca de Dios había sido tomada y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se inclinó y dio a luz, pues le sobrevinieron sus dolores de repente.

And his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, pregnant, about to bear, and she heareth the report of the taking of the ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she boweth, and beareth, for her pains have turned upon her.

20 A l tiempo que moría, las que estaban junto a ella le decían: «No tengas temor, porque has dado a luz un hijo.» Pero ella no respondió ni se dio por enterada.

And at the time of her death, when the women who are standing by her say, `Fear not, for a son thou hast borne,' she hath not answered, nor set her heart;

21 Y llamó al niño Icabod, diciendo: «¡La gloria ha sido desterrada de Israel!», por haber sido tomada el Arca de Dios y por la muerte de su suegro y de su marido.

and she calleth the youth I-Chabod, saying, `Honour hath removed from Israel,' because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

22 D ijo, pues: «La gloria ha sido desterrada de Israel», porque había sido tomada el Arca de Dios.

And she saith, `Honour hath removed from Israel, for the ark of God hath been taken.'
