1 C uvântul lui Samuel a ajuns la tot Israelul. În vremea aceea, Israel a ieşit la război împotriva filistenilor, aşezându-şi tabăra la Eben-Ezer, în timp ce filistenii şi-au aşezat tabăra la Afek.

And the word of Samuel is to all Israel, and Israel goeth out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamp by Eben-Ezer, and the Philistines have encamped in Aphek,

2 F ilistenii s-au aliniat împotriva Israelului şi lupta a început. Israel a fost înfrânt de către filisteni, care au ucis pe câmpul de luptă aproape patru mii de luptători.

and the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreadeth itself, and Israel is smitten before the Philistines, and they smite among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.

3 C ând s-au întors luptătorii în tabără, cei din sfatul bătrânilor lui Israel au spus: „De ce a adus Domnul astăzi peste noi această înfrângere din partea filistenilor? Să aducem din Şilo Chivotul Legământului cu Domnul ca să meargă cu noi şi să ne elibereze de sub puterea duşmanilor noştri.“

And the people cometh in unto the camp, and the elders of Israel say, `Why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? we take unto us from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and it cometh into our midst, and He doth save us out of the hand of our enemies.'

4 P oporul a trimis la Şilo şi au adus de acolo Chivotul Legământului Domnului Oştirilor, care şade între heruvimi. Acolo, împreună cu Chivotul Legământului cu Dumnezeu, se aflau cei doi fii ai lui Eli, Hofni şi Fineas.

And the people sendeth to Shiloh, and they take up thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubs, and there two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.

5 C ând a intrat Chivotul Legământului cu Domnul în tabără, tot Israelul a scos un strigăt puternic, încât a răsunat pământul.

And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto the camp, that all Israel shout -- a great shout -- and the earth is moved.

6 A uzind răsunetul strigătului, filistenii au zis: „Ce înseamnă răsunetul acestui strigăt puternic, care vine din tabăra evreilor?“ Când au aflat că sosise Chivotul Domnului în tabără,

And the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, `What the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?' and they perceive that the ark of Jehovah hath come in unto the camp.

7 f ilistenii s-au temut, căci îşi spuneau că un zeu a venit în tabără. Ei mai spuneau: „Vai de noi! N-a mai fost aşa ceva până acum.

And the Philistines are afraid, for they said, `God hath come in unto the camp;' and they say, `Wo to us, for there hath not been like this heretofore.

8 V ai de noi! Cine ne va izbăvi de sub puterea acestor zei puternici? Aceştia sunt zeii care i-au lovit pe egipteni cu tot felul de plăgi în deşert.

Wo to us, who doth deliver us out of the hand of these honourable gods? these the gods who are smiting the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.

9 F iţi tari, filistenilor! Fiţi bărbaţi, ca nu cumva să deveniţi supuşii evreilor aşa cum v-au fost ei vouă. Fiţi bărbaţi şi luptaţi!“

Strengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest ye do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you -- then ye have become men, and have fought.'

10 A stfel, filistenii au luptat, iar Israel a fost înfrânt, fiecare bărbat dând bir cu fugiţii. Pierderea a fost foarte mare, din Israel căzând pe câmpul de luptă treizeci de mii de pedestraşi.

And the Philistines fight, and Israel is smitten, and they flee each to his tents, and the blow is very great, and there fall of Israel thirty thousand footmen;

11 C hivotul lui Dumnezeu a fost capturat, iar cei doi fii ai lui Eli, Hofni şi Fineas, au murit. Moartea lui Eli

and the ark of God hath been taken, and the two sons of Eli have died, Hophni and Phinehas.

12 Î n aceeaşi zi, un beniamit a fugit de pe câmpul de luptă şi a venit la Şilo. Hainele lui erau sfâşiate, iar pe cap avea ţărână.

And a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes rent, and earth on his head;

13 C ând a sosit el, Eli şedea pe scaunul său, aşteptând lângă drum, căci inima lui tremura din pricina Chivotului lui Dumnezeu. Bărbatul a intrat în cetate, a spus ce s-a întâmplat şi întreaga cetate a început să ţipe.

and he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare in the city, and all the city crieth out.

14 C ând a auzit Eli vuietul, a spus: „Ce înseamnă vuietul acesta?“ Bărbatul a venit repede şi l-a înştiinţat pe Eli.

And Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, `What -- the noise of this tumult!' And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.

15 E li era în vârstă de nouăzeci şi opt de ani şi orbise.

And Eli is a son of ninety and eight years, and his eyes have stood, and he hath not been able to see.

16 B ărbatul i-a spus lui Eli: – Tocmai am sosit de pe câmpul de luptă; astăzi am fugit de acolo. – Ce s-a întâmplat, fiul meu? l-a întrebat Eli.

And the man saith unto Eli, `I he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;' and he saith, `What hath been the matter, my son?'

17 C el care aducea veştile a răspuns: – Israel a fugit dinaintea filistenilor şi oştirea a suferit o mare înfrângere. De asemenea, cei doi fii ai tăi, Hofni şi Fineas, au murit, iar Chivotul lui Dumnezeu a fost capturat.

And he who is bearing tidings answereth and saith, `Israel hath fled before the Philistines, and also a great slaughter hath been among the people, and also thy two sons have died -- Hophni and Phinehas -- and the ark of God hath been captured.'

18 C ând a pomenit el de Chivotul lui Dumnezeu, Eli a căzut de pe scaunul său pe spate, lângă poartă, şi-a rupt gâtul şi a murit, pentru că era un om bătrân şi greu. Eli a judecat Israelul timp de patruzeci de ani.

And it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.

19 N ora sa, soţia lui Fineas, era însărcinată şi urma să nască. Când a auzit ea vestea despre capturarea Chivotului lui Dumnezeu şi despre moartea socrului şi a soţului ei, s-a încovoiat şi a născut pentru că o apucaseră durerile naşterii.

And his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, pregnant, about to bear, and she heareth the report of the taking of the ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she boweth, and beareth, for her pains have turned upon her.

20 Î n timp ce era pe moarte, femeile care o îngrijeau i-au spus: „Nu-ţi fie teamă, căci ai născut un fiu!“ Însă ea nu a răspuns şi nu a luat în seamă ce i se spunea.

And at the time of her death, when the women who are standing by her say, `Fear not, for a son thou hast borne,' she hath not answered, nor set her heart;

21 L -a numit pe copil I-Cabod, zicând: „S-a dus slava din Israel“ – spunea acest lucru din cauza capturării Chivotului lui Dumnezeu şi din cauza socrului şi a soţului ei.

and she calleth the youth I-Chabod, saying, `Honour hath removed from Israel,' because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

22 E a a zis: „S-a dus slava din Israel, căci Chivotul lui Dumnezeu a fost capturat.“

And she saith, `Honour hath removed from Israel, for the ark of God hath been taken.'
