1 D upă toate acestea, Domnul i-a vorbit lui Avram într-o viziune astfel: – Nu te teme, Avrame. Eu sunt scutul tău; răsplata ta va fi foarte mare.

After these things hath the word of Jehovah been unto Abram in a vision, saying, `Fear not, Abram, I a shield to thee, thy reward exceeding great.'

2 – Stăpâne Doamne, ce-mi vei da? I-a răspuns Avram. Căci mor fără copii, iar moştenitorul gospodăriei mele este Eliezer din Damasc?

And Abram saith, `Lord Jehovah, what dost Thou give to me, and I am going childless? and an acquired son in my house is Demmesek Eliezer.'

3 N u mi-ai dat nici un urmaş, a continuat Avram, şi prin urmare, un sclav din gospodăria mea va fi moştenitorul meu.

And Abram saith, `Lo, to me Thou hast not given seed, and lo, a domestic doth heir me.'

4 D ar Domnul i-a răspuns: – Nu acesta va fi moştenitorul tău, ci unul care se va naşte din tine, el îţi va fi moştenitor.

And lo, the word of Jehovah unto him, saying, `This doth not heir thee; but he who cometh out from thy bowels, he doth heir thee;'

5 A poi l-a dus afară şi i-a spus: – Uită-te la cer şi numără stelele, dacă poţi! Atât de numeroşi vor fi urmaşii tăi! a continuat El.

and He bringeth him out without, and saith, `Look attentively, I pray thee, towards the heavens, and count the stars, if thou art able to count them;' and He saith to him, `Thus is thy seed.'

6 A vram L-a crezut pe Domnul, şi El i-a socotit acest lucru dreptate.

And he hath believed in Jehovah, and He reckoneth it to him -- righteousness.

7 D omnul i-a mai spus: – Eu sunt Domnul Care te-a adus din Ur, din Caldeea, ca să-ţi dea această ţară drept moştenire.

And He saith unto him, `I Jehovah who brought thee out from Ur of the Chaldees, to give to thee this land to possess it;'

8 – Stăpâne Doamne, cum voi şti că o voi moşteni? L-a întrebat Avram.

and he saith, `Lord Jehovah, whereby do I know that I possess it?'

9 – Adu-Mi o junincă de trei ani, a răspuns El, o capră de trei ani, un berbec de trei ani, o turturea şi un pui de porumbel.

And He saith unto him, `Take for Me a heifer of three years, and a she-goat of three years, and a ram of three years, and a turtle-dove, and a young bird;'

10 A vram I-a adus toate acestea, le-a despicat în două şi a aşezat jumătăţile una în faţa celeilalte; dar păsările nu le-a despicat.

and he taketh to him all these, and separateth them in the midst, and putteth each piece over against its fellow, but the bird he hath not divided;

11 C ând păsările de pradă s-au năpustit asupra stârvurilor, Avram le-a izgonit.

and the ravenous birds come down upon the carcases, and Abram causeth them to turn back.

12 P e când apunea soarele, pe Avram l-a cuprins un somn adânc şi un întuneric mare şi înfricoşător a venit peste el.

And the sun is about to go in, and deep sleep hath fallen upon Abram, and lo, a terror of great darkness is falling upon him;

13 A tunci Domnul i-a zis lui Avram: „Să ştii că urmaşii tăi vor fi străini într-o ţară care nu este a lor şi vor fi înrobiţi şi asupriţi timp de patru sute de ani.

and He saith to Abram, `knowing -- know that thy seed is a sojourner in a land not theirs, and they have served them, and they have afflicted them four hundred years,

14 D ar pe neamul căruia îi vor sluji ei îl voi judeca Eu, iar după aceea vor ieşi de acolo cu mari bogăţii.

and the nation also whom they serve I judge, and after this they go out with great substance;

15 T u însă vei merge la strămoşii tăi în pace; vei fi îngropat după o bătrâneţe fericită.

and thou -- thou comest in unto thy fathers in peace; thou art buried in a good old age;

16 U rmaşii tăi se vor întoarce aici în a patra generaţie, pentru că nelegiuirea amoriţilor nu este încă deplină.“

and the fourth generation doth turn back hither, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.'

17 C ând a apus soarele şi s-a întunecat, s-a văzut un fum ca de cuptor şi o torţă aprinsă care a trecut printre acele bucăţi.

And it cometh to pass -- the sun hath gone in, and thick darkness hath been -- and lo, a furnace of smoke, and a lamp of fire, which hath passed over between those pieces.

18 Î n ziua aceea, Domnul a încheiat un legământ cu Avram, zicând: „Seminţei tale îi voi da această ţară, de la Râul Egiptului până la Râul cel Mare, adică Eufrat,

In that day hath Jehovah made with Abram a covenant, saying, `To thy seed I have given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Phrat,

19 ş i anume pe cheniţi, pe cheniziţi, pe cadmoniţi,

with the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite,

20 p e hitiţi, pe periziţi, pe refaimiţi,

and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim,

21 p e amoriţi, pe canaaniţi, pe ghirgasiţi şi pe iebusiţi.“

and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.'
