1 Î n al optsprezecelea an de domnie a regelui Ieroboam, peste Iuda a început să domnească Abia.

In the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam -- Abijah reigneth over Judah;

2 E l a domnit la Ierusalim timp de trei ani. Mama lui se numea Maaca şi era fiica lui Uriel din Ghiva. Între Abia şi Ieroboam a fost război.

three years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, (and the name of his mother Michaiah daughter of Uriel, from Gibeah,) and war hath been between Abijah and Jeroboam.

3 A bia a început lupta, având o oştire de războinici viteji, alcătuită din patru sute de mii de bărbaţi aleşi, iar Ieroboam a aşezat în poziţie de luptă împotriva acestuia opt sute de mii de bărbaţi aleşi, războinici viteji.

And Abijah directeth the war with a force of mighty men of war, four hundred thousand chosen men, and Jeroboam hath set in array with him battle, with eight hundred thousand chosen men, mighty of valour.

4 A bia s-a urcat pe culmea muntelui Ţemarayim, care este în regiunea muntoasă a lui Efraim, şi a zis: „Ieroboam şi întregul Israel, ascultaţi-mă!

And Abijah riseth up on the hill of Zemaraim that in the hill-country of Ephraim, and saith, `Hear me, Jeroboam and all Israel!

5 N u ştiţi voi oare că Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, i-a dat pe vecie lui David şi urmaşilor lui dreptul de domnie peste Israel printr-un legământ de sare ?

Is it not for you to know that Jehovah, God of Israel, hath given the kingdom to David over Israel to the age, to him and to his sons -- a covenant of salt?

6 Î nsă acum, Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, slujitorul fiului lui David, Solomon, s-a ridicat răzvrătindu-se împotriva stăpânului său!

and rise up doth Jeroboam, son of Nebat, servant of Solomon son of David, and rebelleth against his lord!

7 N işte oameni de nimic, nişte nelegiuiţi, i s-au alăturat şi s-au împotrivit lui Roboam, fiul lui Solomon, iar Roboam, fiind tânăr şi timid, nu le-a putut sta împotrivă.

`And there are gathered unto him vain men, sons of worthlessness, and they strengthen themselves against Rehoboam son of Solomon, and Rehoboam was a youth, and tender of heart, and hath not strengthened himself against them.

8 V oi credeţi că vă puteţi împotrivi regatului Domnului, care se află în mâna urmaşilor lui David, doar pentru că sunteţi o mare mulţime şi aveţi împreună cu voi viţelul de aur pe care Ieroboam vi l-a făcut ca dumnezeu?

`And now, ye are saying to strengthen yourselves before the kingdom of Jehovah in the hand of the sons of David, and ye a numerous multitude, and with you calves of gold that Jeroboam hath made to you for gods.

9 O are nu voi i-aţi izgonit pe preoţii Domnului, pe urmaşii lui Aaron şi pe leviţi şi v-aţi făcut apoi preoţi după cum fac popoarele celorlalte ţări, astfel că oricine venea cu câte un viţel şi cu şapte berbeci ca să fie învestit în slujire, devenea preot al celui ce nu este Dumnezeu?

`Have ye not cast out the priests of Jehovah, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and make to you priests like the peoples of the lands? every one who hath come to fill his hand with a bullock, a son of the herd, and seven rams, even he hath been a priest to No-gods!

10 C ât despre noi, Domnul este Dumnezeul nostru şi noi nu L-am părăsit: preoţii care slujesc Domnului sunt urmaşii lui Aaron, iar leviţii se află la slujbele lor.

`As for us, Jehovah our God, and we have not forsaken Him, and priests are ministering to Jehovah, sons of Aaron and the Levites, in the work,

11 N oi aducem Domnului arderi de tot şi tămâie mirositoare în fiecare dimineaţă şi în fiecare seară, punem pâinea prezentării pe masa cea curată şi aprindem seară de seară sfeşnicul de aur cu candelele lui. Noi păzim porunca Domnului, Dumnezeul nostru! Voi însă L-aţi părăsit.

and are making perfume to Jehovah, burnt-offerings morning by morning, and evening by evening, and perfume of spices, and the arrangement of bread on the pure table, and the candlestick of gold, and its lamps, to burn evening by evening, for we are keeping the charge of Jehovah our God, and ye -- ye have forsaken Him.

12 I ată că în fruntea noastră este Dumnezeu Însuşi, precum şi preoţii Lui cu trâmbiţele răsunătoare, ca să sune împotriva voastră. Israeliţi, nu vă războiţi cu Domnul, Dumnezeul strămoşilor voştri, căci nu veţi birui!“

`And lo, with us -- at head -- God, and His priests and trumpets of shouting to shout against you; O sons of Israel, do not fight with Jehovah, God of your fathers, for ye do not prosper.'

13 A tunci Ieroboam i-a chemat în luptă pe cei puşi la pândă, ca să atace prin spate, astfel că trupele lui se aflau în faţa lui Iuda, iar cei puşi la pândă – în spate.

And Jeroboam hath brought round the ambush to come in from behind them, and they are before Judah, and the ambush behind them.

14 C ând Iuda s-a întors, a văzut că are de luptat şi în faţă şi în spate. Atunci au strigat după ajutor la Domnul, iar preoţii au sunat din trâmbiţe.

And Judah turneth, and lo, against them the battle, before and behind, and they cry to Jehovah, and the priests are blowing with trumpets,

15 B ărbaţii lui Iuda au scos un strigăt de război şi, la strigătul de război al bărbaţilor lui Iuda, Dumnezeu l-a zdrobit pe Ieroboam şi pe tot Israelul dinaintea lui Abia şi a lui Iuda.

and the men of Judah shout -- and it cometh to pass, at the shouting of the men of Judah, that God hath smitten Jeroboam, and all Israel, before Abijah and Judah.

16 I sraeliţii au fugit dinaintea lui Iuda şi astfel Dumnezeu i-a dat pe israeliţi în mâinile lui Iuda.

And the sons of Israel flee from the face of Judah, and God giveth them into their hand,

17 A bia şi oamenii săi i-au ucis pe aceştia într-un mare măcel. Au căzut ucişi atunci din Israel cinci sute de mii de bărbaţi aleşi.

and Abijah and his people smite among them a great smiting, and there fall wounded of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

18 I sraeliţii au fost umiliţi în acea vreme, iar bărbaţii lui Iuda au fost mai tari, pentru că s-au încrezut în Domnul, Dumnezeul strămoşilor lor.

And the sons of Israel are humbled at that time, and the sons of Judah are strong, for they have leant on Jehovah, God of their fathers.

19 A bia l-a urmărit pe Ieroboam şi i-a luat câteva cetăţi: Betelul cu satele dimprejurul lui, Ieşana cu satele dimprejurul ei şi Efronul cu satele dimprejurul lui.

And Abijah pursueth after Jeroboam, and captureth from him cities, Beth-El and its small towns, and Jeshanah and its small towns, and Ephraim and its small towns.

20 I eroboam nu şi-a mai redobândit puterea în vremea lui Abia şi a murit lovit de Domnul.

And Jeroboam hath not retained power any more in the days of Abijah, and Jehovah smiteth him, and he dieth.

21 D ar Abia a crescut în putere. El şi-a luat paisprezece soţii, care i-au născut douăzeci şi doi de fii şi şaisprezece fiice.

And Abijah strengtheneth himself, and taketh to him fourteen wives, and begetteth twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters,

22 C elelalte fapte ale lui Abia, purtarea lui şi ceea ce a spus el sunt scrise în „Relatarea profetului Ido“.

and the rest of the matters of Abijah, and his ways, and his words, are written in the `Inquiry' of the prophet Iddo.
