1 D ina, fiica pe care Lea i-o născuse lui Iacov, a ieşit să vadă fetele ţării.

And Dinah, daughter of Leah, whom she hath borne to Jacob, goeth out to look on the daughters of the land,

2 C ând a văzut-o, Şehem, fiul hivitului Hamor, prinţul ţării, a luat-o, s-a culcat cu ea şi astfel a necinstit-o.

and Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite, a prince of the land, seeth her, and taketh her, and lieth with her, and humbleth her;

3 E l s-a îndrăgostit de Dina, fiica lui Iacov, a îndrăgit-o şi i-a vorbit frumos.

and his soul cleaveth to Dinah, daughter of Jacob, and he loveth the young person, and speaketh unto the heart of the young person.

4 A poi i-a zis tatălui său, Hamor: „Ia-mi pe această fată de soţie!“

And Shechem speaketh unto Hamor his father, saying, `Take for me this damsel for a wife.'

5 I acov a aflat că Şehem a necinstit-o pe fiica sa, Dina, însă pentru că fiii săi erau cu animalele la câmp, a tăcut până când s-au întors ei.

And Jacob hath heard that he hath defiled Dinah his daughter, and his sons were with his cattle in the field, and Jacob kept silent till their coming.

6 H amor, tatăl lui Şehem, a venit la Iacov să-i vorbească.

And Hamor, father of Shechem, goeth out unto Jacob to speak with him;

7 I mediat ce-au auzit cele întâmplate, fiii lui Iacov s-au întors de la câmp. Ei s-au supărat şi s-au mâniat foarte tare, pentru că Şehem a făcut un lucru ruşinos în Israel, culcându-se cu fiica lui Iacov; un astfel de lucru nu trebuia făcut.

and the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard, and the men grieve themselves, and it very displeasing to them, for folly he hath done against Israel, to lie with the daughter of Jacob -- and so it is not done.

8 Î nsă Hamor le-a vorbit astfel: – Fiul meu, Şehem, s-a îndrăgostit de fiica voastră; vă rog, daţi-i-o de soţie.

And Hamor speaketh with them, saying, `Shechem, my son, his soul hath cleaved to your daughter; give her, I pray you, to him for a wife,

9 Î ncuscriţi-vă cu noi: daţi-ne fiicele voastre şi luaţi fiicele noastre pentru voi.

and join ye in marriage with us; your daughters ye give to us, and our daughters ye take to yourselves,

10 L ocuiţi împreună cu noi; întrucât ţara este înaintea voastră, locuiţi în ea, faceţi negoţ şi dobândiţi proprietăţi în ea.

and with us ye dwell, and the land is before you; dwell ye and trade it, and have possessions in it.'

11 Ş ehem le-a mai spus tatălui şi fraţilor Dinei: – Să găsesc bunăvoinţă la voi şi vă voi da orice îmi veţi cere.

And Shechem saith unto her father, and unto her brethren, `Let me find grace in your eyes, and that which ye say unto me, I give;

12 C ereţi-mi o zestre şi un dar cât de mari vreţi, iar eu vă voi da orice îmi veţi cere; doar daţi-mi fata de soţie.

multiply on me exceedingly dowry and gift, and I give as ye say unto me, and give to me the young person for a wife.'

13 F iii lui Iacov le-au răspuns cu viclenie lui Şehem şi tatălui său, Hamor, pentru că Şehem a necinstit-o pe sora lor, Dina,

And the sons of Jacob answer Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and they speak (because he defiled Dinah their sister),

14 z icând: – Nu putem face acest lucru; nu putem s-o dăm pe sora noastră unui bărbat necircumcis, pentru că aceasta ar fi o ocară pentru noi.

and say unto them, `We are not able to do this thing, to give our sister to one who hath a foreskin: for it a reproach to us.

15 V om fi de acord doar dacă voi vă veţi face ca noi, adică doar dacă fiecare bărbat dintre voi va fi circumcis.

`Only for this we consent to you; if ye be as we, to have every male of you circumcised,

16 A poi vă vom da fiicele noastre şi le vom lua pentru noi pe fiicele voastre; vom locui împreună cu voi şi vom alcătui un singur popor.

then we have given our daughters to you, and your daughters we take to ourselves, and we have dwelt with you, and have become one people;

17 D ar dacă nu ne veţi asculta ca să vă circumcideţi, ne vom lua fata şi vom pleca.

and if ye hearken not unto us to be circumcised, then we have taken our daughter, and have gone.'

18 L ui Hamor şi lui Şehem, fiul acestuia, le-a plăcut cererea.

And their words are good in the eyes of Hamor, and in the eyes of Shechem, Hamor's son;

19 T ânărul, care era cel mai respectat în familia tatălui său, n-a întârziat să facă lucrul cerut, pentru că îi plăcea de fiica lui Iacov.

and the young man delayed not to do the thing, for he had delight in Jacob's daughter, and he is honourable above all the house of his father.

20 A stfel, Hamor şi fiul său, Şehem, au venit la poarta cetăţii lor şi le-au vorbit bărbaţilor din cetate astfel:

And Hamor cometh -- Shechem his son also -- unto the gate of their city, and they speak unto the men of their city, saying,

21 „ Aceşti bărbaţi sunt paşnici cu noi; să locuiască în ţară şi să facă negoţ în ea, pentru că ţara este suficient de mare pentru ei; să ne luăm soţii dintre fiicele lor, iar noi să le dăm pe fiicele noastre, lor.

`These men are peaceable with us; then let them dwell in the land, and trade it; and the land, lo, wide before them; their daughters let us take to ourselves for wives, and our daughters give to them.

22 E i vor să locuiască împreună cu noi şi să alcătuim un singur popor doar dacă fiecare bărbat dintre noi va fi circumcis, aşa cum sunt şi ei.

`Only for this do the men consent to us, to dwell with us, to become one people, in every male of us being circumcised, as they are circumcised;

23 N u vor fi atunci vitele, bogăţiile şi toate animalele lor ale noastre? Deci să fim de acord şi să-i lăsăm să locuiască împreună cu noi.“

their cattle, and their substance, and all their beasts -- are they not ours? only let us consent to them, and they dwell with us.'

24 T oţi cei care au ieşit la poarta cetăţii au ascultat de Hamor şi de fiul său, Şehem, astfel că toţi bărbaţii care au ieşit la poarta cetăţii au fost circumcişi.

And unto Hamor, and unto Shechem his son, hearken do all those going out of the gate of his city, and every male is circumcised, all those going out of the gate of his city.

25 A treia zi, pe când sufereau ei încă, doi dintre fiii lui Iacov, Simeon şi Levi, fraţii Dinei, şi-au luat săbiile, au atacat cetatea care se credea în siguranţă şi i-au ucis pe toţi bărbaţii.

And it cometh to pass, on the third day, in their being pained, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, take each his sword, and come in against the city confidently, and slay every male;

26 E i i-au ucis cu sabia pe Hamor şi pe fiul său, Şehem, au luat-o pe Dina din casa lui Şehem şi au plecat.

and Hamor, and Shechem his son, they have slain by the mouth of the sword, and they take Dinah out of Shechem's house, and go out.

27 F iii lui Iacov s-au năpustit asupra celor înjunghiaţi şi au jefuit cetatea, pentru că o necinstiseră pe sora lor.

Jacob's sons have come in upon the wounded, and they spoil the city, because they had defiled their sister;

28 L e-au luat oile, vitele, măgarii şi tot ce era în cetate şi pe câmp.

their flock and their herd, and their asses, and that which in the city, and that which in the field, have they taken;

29 L e-au luat ca pradă toată bogăţia, toţi copiii şi soţiile şi au jefuit tot ce era în case.

and all their wealth, and all their infants, and their wives they have taken captive, and they spoil also all that in the house.

30 A tunci Iacov le-a zis lui Simeon şi lui Levi: – M-aţi nenorocit făcându-mă urât canaaniţilor şi periziţilor, locuitorii ţării; eu am puţini oameni în subordine, iar ei se vor strânge împotriva mea şi mă vor omorî, astfel încât voi fi nimicit eu şi familia mea.

And Jacob saith unto Simeon and unto Levi, `Ye have troubled me, by causing me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanite, and among the Perizzite: and I few in number, and they have been gathered against me, and have smitten me, and I have been destroyed, I and my house.'

31 D ar ei i-au răspuns: – Se cuvenea ca el să se poarte cu sora noastră ca şi cu o prostituată?

And they say, `As a harlot doth he make our sister?'
