1 C ând Samuel a îmbătrânit, i-a pus pe fiii săi drept judecători peste Israel.

And it cometh to pass, when Samuel aged, that he maketh his sons judges over Israel.

2 N umele fiului său întâi născut era Ioel, iar numele celui de-al doilea era Abia. Ei erau judecători la Beer-Şeba.

And the name of his first-born son is Joel, and the name of his second Abiah, judges in Beer-Sheba:

3 F iii săi însă nu călcau pe urmele lui, ci umblau după câştig, luau mită şi perverteau dreptatea.

and his sons have not walked in his ways, and turn aside after the dishonest gain, and take a bribe, and turn aside judgment.

4 T oţi cei din sfatul bătrânilor lui Israel s-au adunat şi au venit la Samuel, la Rama,

And all the elders of Israel gather themselves together, and come in unto Samuel to Ramath,

5 s punându-i: „Tu eşti bătrân, iar fiii tăi nu-ţi calcă pe urme. Acum dar, pune un rege care să domnească peste noi, aşa cum au toate neamurile!“

and say unto him, `Lo, thou hast become aged, and thy sons have not walked in thy ways; now, appoint to us a king, to judge us, like all the nations.'

6 S amuel a văzut ca un lucru rău faptul că ei au cerut un rege să domnească peste ei şi s-a rugat Domnului.

And the thing is evil in the eyes of Samuel, when they have said, `Give to us a king to judge us;' and Samuel prayeth unto Jehovah.

7 D omnul însă i-a zis lui Samuel: „Ascultă glasul poporului în tot ce îţi va spune, pentru că nu pe tine te leapădă, ci pe Mine, ca să nu mai domnesc peste ei.

And Jehovah saith unto Samuel, `Hearken to the voice of the people, to all that they say unto thee, for thee they have not rejected, but Me they have rejected, from reigning over them.

8 A şa au făcut din ziua în care i-am scos din Egipt şi până astăzi: M-au părăsit şi au slujit altor dumnezei. Ei fac aşa şi cu tine.

According to all the works that they have done from the day of My bringing them up out of Egypt, even unto this day, when they forsake Me, and serve other gods -- so they are doing also to thee.

9 A scultă-le deci glasul, însă avertizează-i şi fă-le cunoscut care vor fi drepturile regelui care va domni peste ei.“ Drepturile regelui

And now, hearken to their voice; only, surely thou dost certainly protest to them, and hast declared to them the custom of the king who doth reign over them.'

10 S amuel a spus poporului care a cerut de la el un rege toate cuvintele Domnului.

And Samuel speaketh all the words of Jehovah unto the people who are asking from him a king,

11 L e-a spus: – Acestea vor fi drepturile regelui care va domni peste voi: îi va lua pe fiii voştri şi îi va folosi la carele lui; ei vor fi călăreţii lui şi vor alerga înaintea carelor sale.

and saith, `This is the custom of the king who doth reign over you: Your sons he doth take, and hath appointed for himself among his chariots, and among his horsemen, and they have run before his chariots;

12 Î i va folosi pentru sine drept căpetenii peste mii şi căpetenii peste cincizeci; îi va folosi pentru a-i ara ogorul şi pentru a-i culege recolta, pentru a-i face echipament de război şi echipament pentru carele lui.

also to appoint for himself heads of thousands, and heads of fifties; also to plow his plowing, and to reap his reaping; and to make instruments of his war, and instruments of his charioteer.

13 L e va lua pe fiicele voastre pentru a-i face miresme, pentru a-i găti mâncare şi pentru a-i coace.

`And your daughters he doth take for perfumers, and for cooks, and for bakers;

14 V a lua partea cea mai bună din ogoarele voastre, din viile voastre şi din smochinii voştri şi o va da slujitorilor săi.

and your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive-yards -- the best -- he doth take, and hath given to his servants.

15 V a lua a zecea parte din rodul seminţelor voastre şi din viile voastre şi o va da căpeteniilor şi slujitorilor săi.

And your seed and your vineyards he doth tithe, and hath given to his eunuchs, and to his servants.

16 Î i va lua pe slujitorii voştri, pe slujitoarele voastre, cele mai bune dintre vitele şi măgarii voştri şi îi va folosi pentru lucrările lui.

And your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your young men -- the best, and your asses, he doth take, and hath prepared for his own work;

17 Î i veţi da a zecea parte din turmele voastre şi îi veţi fi slujitori.

your flock he doth tithe, and ye are to him for servants.

18 Î n ziua aceea, veţi striga să fiţi izbăviţi dinaintea regelui pe care vi l-aţi ales, dar Domnul nu vă va răspunde în ziua aceea.

And ye have cried out in that day because of the king whom ye have chosen for yourselves, and Jehovah doth not answer you in that day.'

19 D ar poporul nu a vrut să asculte de glasul lui Samuel şi a zis: – Nu vrem să facem cum zici tu, ci să fie un rege peste noi!

And the people refuse to hearken to the voice of Samuel, and say, `Nay, but a king is over us,

20 Î n felul acesta vom fi la fel ca toate neamurile: regele nostru va domni peste noi şi ne va conduce în războaiele noastre.

and we have been, even we, like all the nations; and our king hath judged us, and gone out before us, and fought our battles.'

21 S amuel, după ce a auzit toate cuvintele poporului, le-a spus în auzul Domnului.

And Samuel heareth all the words of the people, and speaketh them in the ears of Jehovah;

22 A tunci Domnul i-a zis lui Samuel: „Ascultă de glasul lor şi pune un rege peste ei.“ Samuel le-a zis israeliţilor: – Întoarceţi-vă fiecare în cetatea lui!

and Jehovah saith unto Samuel, `Hearken to their voice, and thou hast caused to reign over them a king.' And Samuel saith unto the men of Israel, `Go ye each to his city.'
