1 I ată care sunt teritoriile primite drept moştenire de către israeliţi în Canaan, teritorii împărţite de preotul Elazar, de Iosua, fiul lui Nun, şi de conducătorii clanurilor din seminţiile lui Israel.

And these they the sons of Israel who inherited in the land of Canaan, whom Eleazar the priest, and Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel, caused to inherit;

2 M oştenirea a fost împărţită prin tragere la sorţi, aşa cum poruncise Domnul prin Moise, pentru cele nouă seminţii şi jumătate.

by lot their inheritance, as Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine of the tribes, and the half of the tribe;

3 M oise împărţise moştenirea celor două seminţii şi jumătate, de cealaltă parte a Iordanului; leviţilor nu le dăduse însă nici o moştenire printre ei,

for Moses hath given the inheritance of two of the tribes, and of half of the tribe, beyond the Jordan, and to the Levites he hath not given an inheritance in their midst;

4 d eoarece urmaşii lui Iosif alcătuiau două seminţii, şi anume Manase şi Efraim. Leviţii n-au primit nici un teritoriu în ţară, ci doar câteva cetăţi pentru locuit, împreună cu păşunile din jurul lor pentru turme şi cirezi.

for the sons of Joseph hath been two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, and they have not given a portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in, and their suburbs for their cattle, and for their possessions;

5 A şadar, israeliţii împărţiseră ţara, întocmai cum îi poruncise Domnul lui Moise. Teritoriul moştenit de Caleb

as Jehovah commanded Moses, so have the sons of Israel done, and they apportion the land.

6 U rmaşii lui Iuda s-au apropiat de Iosua la Ghilgal, iar Caleb, fiul chenizitului Iefune, i-a spus: „Tu ştii ce i-a zis Domnul lui Moise, omul lui Dumnezeu, despre mine şi despre tine, pe când eram la Kadeş-Barnea.

And the sons of Judah come nigh unto Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenezzite saith unto him, `Thou hast known the word that Jehovah hath spoken unto Moses the man of God, concerning me and concerning thee in Kadesh-Barnea:

7 E u aveam patruzeci de ani atunci când Moise, robul Domnului, m-a trimis din Kadeş-Barnea ca să iscodesc ţara, iar eu i-am adus veşti potrivit cu ceea ce era în mintea mea.

a son of forty years I in Moses, servant of Jehovah, sending me from Kadesh-Barnea, to spy the land, and I bring him back word as with my heart;

8 F raţii mei care m-au însoţit au înmuiat inima poporului, însă eu L-am urmat întru totul pe Domnul, Dumnezeul meu.

and my brethren who have gone up with me have caused the heart of the people to melt, and I have been fully after Jehovah my God;

9 Î n acea zi, Moise mi-a jurat astfel: «Teritoriul pe care l-ai străbătut cu piciorul tău va fi moştenirea ta şi a urmaşilor tăi pentru totdeauna, pentru că ai urmat întru totul calea DOMNULui, Dumnezeul tău.»

and Moses sweareth in that day, saying, If not -- the land on which thy foot hath trodden, to thee it is for inheritance, and to thy sons -- to the age, for thou hast been fully after Jehovah my God.

10 A cum, iată că Domnul m-a ţinut în viaţă aşa cum a spus. Sunt patruzeci şi cinci de ani, de când Cuvântul Domnului a vorbit astfel lui Moise, pe vremea când Israel străbătea pustia şi iată-mă astăzi, în vârstă de optzeci şi cinci de ani!

`And, now, lo, Jehovah hath kept me alive, as He hath spoken, these forty and five years, since Jehovah spake this word unto Moses, when Israel went in the wilderness; and now, lo, I to-day a son of five and eighty years;

11 S unt la fel de puternic astăzi ca şi în ziua în care Moise m-a trimis şi am tot atâta vigoare cât aveam atunci pentru a merge la luptă.

yet I to-day strong as in the day of Moses' sending me; as my power then, so my power now, for battle, and to go out, and to come in.

12 D ă-mi deci această regiune muntoasă despre care a vorbit Domnul la acea vreme! Căci tu însuţi ai auzit încă de atunci cum că acolo trăiesc anachiţii, iar cetăţile sunt înalte şi fortificate. Poate că Domnul va fi cu mine şi îi voi izgoni, aşa cum a promis Domnul.“

`And now, give to me this hill-country, of which Jehovah spake in that day, for thou didst hear in that day, for Anakim there, and cities, great, fenced; if so be Jehovah with me, then I have dispossessed them, as Jehovah hath spoken.'

13 A tunci Iosua l-a binecuvântat pe Caleb, fiul lui Iefune şi i-a dat Hebronul ca moştenire.

And Joshua blesseth him, and giveth Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh for an inheritance,

14 D e atunci încoace, Hebronul a rămas moştenirea lui Caleb, fiul chenizitului Iefune, pentru că L-a urmat întru totul pe Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel.

therefore hath Hebron been to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenezzite for an inheritance unto this day, because that he was fully after Jehovah, God of Israel;

15 Î nainte, Hebronul se numise Chiriat-Arba; Arba fusese un om cu seamă printre anachiţi. După aceea ţara s-a odihnit de război.

and the name of Hebron formerly Kirjath-Arba (he the great man among the Anakim); and the land hath rest from war.
