1 I sraeliţii au făcut din nou ce este rău în ochii Domnului şi de aceea Domnul i-a dat pe mâna lui Midian timp de şapte ani.

And the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and Jehovah giveth them into the hand of Midian seven years,

2 M idianiţii i-au asuprit cu putere pe israeliţi. Din cauza lor, israeliţii şi-au făcut grote în munţi, peşteri şi fortăreţe.

and the hand of Midian is strong against Israel, from the presence of Midian have the sons of Israel made for themselves the flowings which in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

3 O ri de câte ori semăna Israel, midianiţii împreună cu amalekiţii şi popoarele din răsărit porneau împotriva lui.

And it hath been, if Israel hath sowed, that Midian hath come up, and Amalek, and the sons of the east, yea, they have come up against him,

4 E i îi invadau ţara şi distrugeau roadele pământului până aproape de Gaza. Nu lăsau în Israel nici hrană, nici oi, nici boi şi nici măgari,

and encamp against them, and destroy the increase of the land till thine entering Gaza; and they leave no sustenance in Israel, either sheep, or ox, or ass;

5 c ăci ei veneau cu vitele şi corturile lor, sosind ca o mulţime de lăcuste. Ei şi cămilele lor erau fără număr şi intrau în ţară ca s-o distrugă.

for they and their cattle come up, with their tents; they come in as the fulness of the locust for multitude, and of them and of their cattle there is no number, and they come into the land to destroy it.

6 I srael decăzuse foarte mult din cauza midianiţilor. Atunci israeliţii au strigat către Domnul.

And Israel is very weak from the presence of Midian, and the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah.

7 C ând au strigat israeliţii către Domnul din cauza lui Midian,

And it cometh to pass when the sons of Israel have cried unto Jehovah, concerning Midian,

8 D omnul le-a trimis un profet care le-a zis: „Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Eu v-am scos din Egipt, Eu v-am smuls din casa sclaviei

that Jehovah sendeth a man, a prophet, unto the sons of Israel, and he saith to them, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I -- I have brought you up out of Egypt, and I bring you out from a house of servants,

9 ş i v-am eliberat din mâna egiptenilor şi din mâna tuturor celor ce vă asupreau! I-am izgonit dinaintea voastră şi v-am dat vouă ţara lor!

and I deliver you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all your oppressors, and I cast them out from your presence, and I give to you their land,

10 V -am poruncit atunci că Domnul este Dumnezeul vostru şi de aceea să nu vă temeţi de zeii amoriţilor în a căror ţară locuiţi. Dar voi n-aţi ascultat de glasul Meu.»“ Chemarea lui Ghedeon

and I say to you, I Jehovah your God, ye do not fear the gods of the Amorite in whose land ye are dwelling: -- and ye have not hearkened to My voice.'

11 D upă aceea a venit Îngerul Domnului şi S-a aşezat sub terebintul din Ofra, care era al abiezritului Ioaş. Fiul său, Ghedeon, treiera grâul în teasc, ca să-l ascundă de midianiţi.

And the messenger of Jehovah cometh and sitteth under the oak which in Ophrah, which to Joash the Abi-Ezrite, and Gideon his son is beating out wheat in the wine-press, to remove from the presence of the Midianites;

12 Î ngerul Domnului i S-a arătat şi i-a zis: – Domnul este cu tine, războinic viteaz!

and the messenger of Jehovah appeareth unto him, and saith unto him, `Jehovah with thee, O mighty one of valour.'

13 G hedeon I-a răspuns: – Nu te supăra, domnule, dar dacă Domnul este cu noi atunci de ce ni s-au întâmplat toate acestea? Şi unde sunt toate minunile pe care ni le-au istorisit părinţii noştri când ziceau: „Nu ne-a scos Domnul din Egipt?“ Dar acum Domnul ne-a părăsit şi ne-a dat în mâna midianiţilor.

And Gideon saith unto him, `O, my lord -- and Jehovah is with us! -- and why hath all this found us? and where all His wonders which our fathers recounted to us, saying, Hath not Jehovah brought us up out of Egypt? and now Jehovah hath left us, and doth give us into the hand of Midian.'

14 D omnul S-a întors spre el şi i-a zis: – Du-te cu puterea aceasta pe care o ai şi eliberează Israelul din mâna midianiţilor! Oare nu te trimit Eu?

And Jehovah turneth unto him and saith, `Go in this -- thy power; and thou hast saved Israel out of the hand of Midian -- have not I sent thee.'

15 E l I-a răspuns: – Iartă-mă, Stăpâne, dar cum să eliberez eu pe Israel? Iată că familia mea este cea mai mică în Manase, iar eu sunt cel mai tânăr în familia tatălui meu!

And he saith unto him, `O, my lord, wherewith do I save Israel? lo, my chief weak in Manasseh, and I the least in the house of my father.'

16 A tunci Domnul i-a zis: – Vei învinge pe Midian ca pe un singur om, pentru că Eu voi fi cu tine!

And Jehovah saith unto him, `Because I am with thee -- thou hast smitten the Midianites as one man.'

17 E l I-a răspuns: – Te rog, dacă tot am găsit bunăvoinţă la Tine, atunci înfăptuieşte un semn pentru mine ca să ştiu că într-adevăr Tu eşti Cel Ce vorbeşti cu mine!

And he saith unto Him, `If, I pray Thee, I have found grace in Thine eyes, then Thou hast done for me a sign that Thou art speaking with me.

18 T e mai rog, nu Te depărta de aici până ce nu mă voi întoarce la Tine ca să-Ţi aduc darul meu şi să Ţi-l ofer! – Voi rămâne până te vei întoarce! i-a zis El.

Move not, I pray Thee, from this, till my coming in unto Thee, and I have brought out my present, and put it before Thee;' and he saith, `I -- I do abide till thy return.'

19 G hedeon a intrat, a gătit un ied, iar dintr-o efă de făină a făcut azime. Carnea iedului a pus-o într-un coş, iar zeama într-un vas; apoi s-a dus înspre El, sub terebint şi I le-a oferit.

And Gideon hath gone in, and prepareth a kid of the goats, and of an ephah of flour unleavened things; the flesh he hath put in a basket, and the broth he hath put in a pot, and he bringeth out unto Him, unto the place of the oak, and bringeth nigh.

20 Î ngerul Domnului i-a zis: – Ia carnea şi azimele şi pune-le pe stânca aceasta, iar zeama vars-o! El a făcut aşa.

And the messenger of God saith unto him, `Take the flesh and the unleavened things, and place on this rock -- and the broth pour out;' and he doth so.

21 Î ngerul Domnului a întins toiagul care era în mâna Lui şi a atins cu vârful carnea şi azimele. În acel moment a ieşit foc din stâncă, care a mistuit carnea şi azimele. Apoi Îngerul Domnului S-a făcut nevăzut.

And the messenger of Jehovah putteth forth the end of the staff which in His hand, and cometh against the flesh, and against the unleavened things, and the fire goeth up out of the rock and consumeth the flesh and the unleavened things -- and the messenger of Jehovah hath gone from his eyes.

22 A tunci Ghedeon şi-a dat seama că fusese Îngerul Domnului şi a zis: – Vai de mine, Stăpâne Doamne! Am văzut pe Îngerul Domnului faţă în faţă!

And Gideon seeth that He a messenger of Jehovah, and Gideon saith, `Alas, Lord Jehovah! because that I have seen a messenger of Jehovah face to face!'

23 D ar Domnul i-a răspuns: – Pace ţie! Să nu-ţi fie frică, căci nu vei muri!

And Jehovah saith to him, `Peace to thee; fear not; thou dost not die.'

24 G hedeon a zidit acolo un altar Domnului şi l-a numit „ Domnul este pace“. Altarul mai este încă şi astăzi în Ofra, care aparţine abiezriţilor. Ghedeon distruge altarul lui Baal

And Gideon buildeth there an altar to Jehovah, and calleth it Jehovah-Shalom, unto this day it yet in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrites.

25 Î n aceeaşi noapte Domnul i-a zis: – Ia cel de-al doilea bou tânăr al tatălui tău, boul care are şapte ani! Dărâmă altarul închinat de tatăl tău lui Baal şi taie stâlpul Aşerei care este lângă el.

And it cometh to pass, on that night, that Jehovah saith to him, `Take the young ox which to thy father, and the second bullock of seven years, and thou hast thrown down the altar of Baal which to thy father, and the shrine which by it thou dost cut down,

26 Z ideşte apoi un altar potrivit Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, pe vârful acestei înălţimi, ia boul şi adu o ardere de tot, folosind stâlpul Aşerei pe care-l vei tăia!

and thou hast built an altar to Jehovah thy God on the top of this stronghold, by the arrangement, and hast taken the second bullock, and caused to ascend a burnt-offering with the wood of the shrine which thou cuttest down.'

27 G hedeon a luat zece oameni din slujitorii lui şi a făcut aşa cum îi poruncise Domnul, dar fiindcă i-a fost foarte frică de familia lui şi de oamenii din cetate, a făcut acest lucru noaptea, nu ziua.

And Gideon taketh ten men of his servants, and doth as Jehovah hath spoken unto him, and it cometh to pass, because he hath been afraid of the house of his father, and the men of the city, to do by day, that he doth by night.

28 C ând oamenii din cetate s-au sculat dis-de-dimineaţă, au observat că altarul lui Baal era dărâmat, stâlpul Aşerei, care fusese lângă el, era tăiat, iar boul fusese jertfit pe un altar nou.

And the men of the city rise early in the morning, and lo, broken down hath been the altar of Baal, and the shrine which is by it hath been cut down, and the second bullock hath been offered on the altar which is built.

29 A tunci s-au întrebat unii pe alţii: – Cine a făcut o asemenea faptă? După ce au întrebat şi au cercetat li s-a răspuns: – Ghedeon, fiul lui Ioaş, a făcut fapta aceasta!

And they say one to another, `Who hath done this thing?' and they inquire and seek, and they say, `Gideon son of Joash hath done this thing.'

30 O amenii din cetate i-au zis lui Ioaş: – Scoate-l afară pe fiul tău ca să moară, pentru că a dărâmat altarul lui Baal şi a tăiat stâlpul Aşerei de lângă el!

And the men of the city say unto Joash, `Bring out thy son, and he dieth, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the shrine which by it.'

31 I oaş le-a răspuns tuturor acelora care i-au stat împotrivă: – Oare voi trebuie să-i ţineţi partea? Voi trebuie să-l apăraţi? Cine îl va răzbuna pe Baal să fie ucis până dimineaţă! Dacă este dumnezeu, atunci să se apere singur din cauză că i-a fost dărâmat altarul!

And Joash saith to all who have stood against him, `Ye, do ye plead for Baal? ye -- do ye save him? he who pleadeth for him is put to death during the morning; if he a god he himself doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

32 Î n ziua aceea au pus lui Ghedeon numele Ierub-Baal şi au zis: – Să se certe Baal cu el din cauză că i-a dărâmat altarul! Semnul cu lâna

And he calleth him, on that day, Jerubbaal, saying, `The Baal doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

33 T oţi midianiţii, amalekiţii şi popoarele din răsărit s-au aliat, au traversat Iordanul şi şi-au aşezat tabăra în valea Izreel.

And all Midian and Amalek and the sons of the east have been gathered together, and pass over, and encamp in the valley of Jezreel,

34 G hedeon a fost îmbrăcat cu Duhul Domnului şi a sunat din corn. Abiezer a fost chemat să meargă după el.

and the Spirit of Jehovah hath clothed Gideon, and he bloweth with a trumpet, and Abi-Ezer is called after him;

35 A trimis soli prin tot teritoriul lui Manase şi manasiţii au fost chemaţi să-l însoţească. A trimis soli în Aşer, în Zabulon şi în Neftali şi ei au venit să-l susţină.

and messengers he hath sent into all Manasseh, and it also is called after him; and messengers he hath sent into Asher, and into Zebulun, and into Naphtali, and they come up to meet them.

36 A tunci Ghedeon I-a zis lui Dumnezeu: „Dacă într-adevăr vrei să-l eliberezi pe Israel, folosindu-te de mine precum ai spus,

And Gideon saith unto God, `If Thou art Saviour of Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken,

37 i ată, voi pune o învelitoare de lână în ogor. Dacă roua va apărea doar pe lână şi tot pământul va rămâne uscat, atunci voi înţelege că vrei să eliberezi Israelul prin mine, precum ai spus!“

lo, I am placing the fleece of wool in the threshing-floor: if dew is on the fleece alone, and on all the earth drought -- then I have known that Thou dost save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken;'

38 Ş i aşa s-a şi întâmplat. Când s-a sculat a doua zi dis-de-dimineaţă, a stors învelitoarea, şi din ea a curs rouă; a umplut cu apă un vas întreg.

and it is so, and he riseth early on the morrow, and presseth the fleece, and wringeth dew out of the fleece -- the fulness of the bowl, of water.

39 A tunci Ghedeon I-a zis din nou lui Dumnezeu: „Să nu te aprinzi de mânie împotriva mea, dar voi mai vorbi încă o dată! Te rog, îngăduie-mi să mai încerc o dată semnul cu învelitoarea! Fă ca numai învelitoarea să rămână uscată şi tot pământul să se acopere cu rouă!“

And Gideon saith unto God, `Let not Thine anger burn against me, and I speak only this time; let me try, I pray Thee, only this time with the fleece -- let there be, I pray Thee, drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth let there be dew.'

40 Ş i Dumnezeu a făcut aşa în noaptea aceea: învelitoarea a rămas uscată, iar tot pământul s-a acoperit cu rouă.

And God doth so on that night, and there is drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth there hath been dew.
