1 D ân Y-sơ-ra-ên làm điều ác trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va, nên Đức Giê-hô-va phó chúng vào tay dân Ma-đi-an trong bảy năm.

And the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and Jehovah giveth them into the hand of Midian seven years,

2 T ay của người Ma-đi-an thắng hơn Y-sơ-ra-ên. Vì sợ người Ma-đi-an, nên dân Y-sơ-ra-ên làm cho mình những nơi ẩn náu trong núi, trong các hầm và đồn.

and the hand of Midian is strong against Israel, from the presence of Midian have the sons of Israel made for themselves the flowings which in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

3 K hi Y-sơ-ra-ên đã gieo giống, dân Ma-đi-an với dân A-mê-léc, và người phương Đông đi lên đánh Y-sơ-ra-ên,

And it hath been, if Israel hath sowed, that Midian hath come up, and Amalek, and the sons of the east, yea, they have come up against him,

4 đ óng trại đối ngang người, phá hại mùa màng của xứ cho đến Ga-xa, và không để lại trong Y-sơ-ra-ên lương thực gì, hoặc chiên, bò hay là lừa.

and encamp against them, and destroy the increase of the land till thine entering Gaza; and they leave no sustenance in Israel, either sheep, or ox, or ass;

5 V ì chúng nó đi lên đem theo bầy súc vật và trại mình, loán đến khác nào một đám cào cào. Người và lạc đà vô số đến trong xứ đặng phá hại.

for they and their cattle come up, with their tents; they come in as the fulness of the locust for multitude, and of them and of their cattle there is no number, and they come into the land to destroy it.

6 V ậy, vì cớ dân Ma-đi-an, Y-sơ-ra-ên bị nghèo khổ bẩn chật, nên họ kêu cầu cùng Đức Giê-hô-va.

And Israel is very weak from the presence of Midian, and the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah.

7 B ấy giờ, vì dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đã kêu cầu Đức Giê-hô-va về việc dân Ma-đi-an,

And it cometh to pass when the sons of Israel have cried unto Jehovah, concerning Midian,

8 n ên Đức Giê-hô-va sai một đấng tiên tri đến cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Người nói cùng chúng rằng: Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán như vầy: Ta đã đem các ngươi lên khỏi xứ Ê-díp-tô, rút các ngươi khỏi nhà nô lệ,

that Jehovah sendeth a man, a prophet, unto the sons of Israel, and he saith to them, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I -- I have brought you up out of Egypt, and I bring you out from a house of servants,

9 g iải cứu các ngươi khỏi tay người Ê-díp-tô, và khỏi tay hết thảy kẻ hà hiếp các ngươi, và đuổi chúng nó khỏi trước mặt các ngươi; ta đã ban cho các ngươi xứ của chúng nó,

and I deliver you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all your oppressors, and I cast them out from your presence, and I give to you their land,

10 v à có phán rằng: Ta là Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời các ngươi, chớ sợ các thần của dân A-mô-rít tại trong xứ mà các ngươi ở. Nhưng các ngươi nào có nghe tiếng ta!

and I say to you, I Jehovah your God, ye do not fear the gods of the Amorite in whose land ye are dwelling: -- and ye have not hearkened to My voice.'

11 Đ oạn, thiên sứ của Đức Giê-hô-va đến ngồi dưới cây thông O

And the messenger of Jehovah cometh and sitteth under the oak which in Ophrah, which to Joash the Abi-Ezrite, and Gideon his son is beating out wheat in the wine-press, to remove from the presence of the Midianites;

12 T hiên sứ của Đức Giê-hô-va hiện đến cùng người mà rằng: Hỡi người dõng sĩ! Đức Giê-hô-va ở cùng người.

and the messenger of Jehovah appeareth unto him, and saith unto him, `Jehovah with thee, O mighty one of valour.'

13 G hê-đê-ôn thưa rằng: O

And Gideon saith unto him, `O, my lord -- and Jehovah is with us! -- and why hath all this found us? and where all His wonders which our fathers recounted to us, saying, Hath not Jehovah brought us up out of Egypt? and now Jehovah hath left us, and doth give us into the hand of Midian.'

14 Đ ức Giê-hô-va xây lại cùng người mà phán rằng: Hãy dùng sức của ngươi vẫn có mà đi giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên khỏi tay dân Ma-đi-an. Ta há chẳng sai ngươi đi sao?

And Jehovah turneth unto him and saith, `Go in this -- thy power; and thou hast saved Israel out of the hand of Midian -- have not I sent thee.'

15 N gười thưa rằng: Than ôi! hỡi Chúa, tôi sẽ lấy chi giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên? Kìa, trong chi phái Ma-na-se, họ tôi vốn nghèo hơn hết; còn tôi là nhỏ hơn hết trong nhà cha tôi.

And he saith unto him, `O, my lord, wherewith do I save Israel? lo, my chief weak in Manasseh, and I the least in the house of my father.'

16 Đ ức Giê-hô-va phán rằng: Ta sẽ ở cùng ngươi, và ngươi sẽ đánh bại dân Ma-đi-an như đánh một người vậy.

And Jehovah saith unto him, `Because I am with thee -- thou hast smitten the Midianites as one man.'

17 G hê-đê-ôn thưa lại rằng: Nếu tôi được ơn trước mặt Chúa, xin ban cho tôi một dấu rằng chính Chúa phán cùng tôi.

And he saith unto Him, `If, I pray Thee, I have found grace in Thine eyes, then Thou hast done for me a sign that Thou art speaking with me.

18 X in chớ dan khỏi đây cho đến khi tôi trở lại cùng Ngài, đem của lễ tôi, để trước mặt Ngài. Ngài đáp: Ta sẽ ở đây cho đến khi ngươi trở lại.

Move not, I pray Thee, from this, till my coming in unto Thee, and I have brought out my present, and put it before Thee;' and he saith, `I -- I do abide till thy return.'

19 G hê-đê-ôn bèn đi vô, dọn sẵn một con dê con, lấy một ê-pha bột làm những bánh nhỏ không men. Người để thịt trong rổ, đổ nước thịt vào nồi, rồi đem ra dâng các món ấy cho Ngài ở dưới cây thông.

And Gideon hath gone in, and prepareth a kid of the goats, and of an ephah of flour unleavened things; the flesh he hath put in a basket, and the broth he hath put in a pot, and he bringeth out unto Him, unto the place of the oak, and bringeth nigh.

20 T hiên sứ của Đức Chúa Trời phán rằng: Hãy lấy thịt và bánh nhỏ không men, để trên hòn đá nầy, rồi đổ nước thịt ra. Ghê-đê-ôn bèn làm như vậy.

And the messenger of God saith unto him, `Take the flesh and the unleavened things, and place on this rock -- and the broth pour out;' and he doth so.

21 B ấy giờ, thiên sứ của Đức Giê-hô-va giơ đầu gậy Ngài đương cầm nơi tay mình ra, đụng đến thịt và bánh nhỏ không men. Lửa từ hòn đá bốc lên, thiêu hóa thịt và bánh nhỏ không men; đoạn, thiên sứ của Đức Giê-hô-va biến đi khỏi mắt người.

And the messenger of Jehovah putteth forth the end of the staff which in His hand, and cometh against the flesh, and against the unleavened things, and the fire goeth up out of the rock and consumeth the flesh and the unleavened things -- and the messenger of Jehovah hath gone from his eyes.

22 G hê-đê-ôn thấy rằng ấy là thiên sứ của Đức Giê-hô-va, bèn la rằng: O

And Gideon seeth that He a messenger of Jehovah, and Gideon saith, `Alas, Lord Jehovah! because that I have seen a messenger of Jehovah face to face!'

23 N hưng Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng người rằng: Khá yên lòng, chớ sợ chi, ngươi sẽ không chết đâu.

And Jehovah saith to him, `Peace to thee; fear not; thou dost not die.'

24 G hê-đê-ôn bèn lập tại đó một cái bàn thờ cho Đức Giê-hô-va, và đặt tên là Giê-hô-va-Sa-lam. Tại O

And Gideon buildeth there an altar to Jehovah, and calleth it Jehovah-Shalom, unto this day it yet in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrites.

25 T rong cũng một đêm ấy, Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng Ghê-đê-ôn rằng: Hãy bắt con bò đực tơ của cha ngươi, và một con bò đực thứ nhì bảy tuổi, rồi phá dỡ bàn thờ thần Ba-anh tại nhà cha ngươi, và đánh hạ hình tượng A-sê-ra ở trên đó.

And it cometh to pass, on that night, that Jehovah saith to him, `Take the young ox which to thy father, and the second bullock of seven years, and thou hast thrown down the altar of Baal which to thy father, and the shrine which by it thou dost cut down,

26 Đ oạn, tại nơi chót hòn đá nầy, ngươi sẽ lập một bàn thờ cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời ngươi, và sắp đặt mọi việc; rồi hãy bắt con bò đực thứ nhì, dâng làm của lễ thiêu với gỗ hình tượng A-sê-ra mà ngươi đã đánh hạ.

and thou hast built an altar to Jehovah thy God on the top of this stronghold, by the arrangement, and hast taken the second bullock, and caused to ascend a burnt-offering with the wood of the shrine which thou cuttest down.'

27 G hê-đê-ôn chọn lấy mười người trong bọn đầy tớ mình, và làm theo điều Đức Giê-hô-va đã phán dặn; và vì người sợ nhà cha mình cùng kẻ trong thành, nên không dám làm theo lịnh ấy ban ngày, bèn làm ban đêm.

And Gideon taketh ten men of his servants, and doth as Jehovah hath spoken unto him, and it cometh to pass, because he hath been afraid of the house of his father, and the men of the city, to do by day, that he doth by night.

28 S ớm mai, khi dân trong thành thức giấc, thấy bàn thờ của thần Ba-anh đã bị phá dỡ, hình tượng A-sê-ra ở trên bị đánh hạ, và con bò đực thứ nhì đã dâng làm của lễ thiêu trên bàn thờ mới lập đó.

And the men of the city rise early in the morning, and lo, broken down hath been the altar of Baal, and the shrine which is by it hath been cut down, and the second bullock hath been offered on the altar which is built.

29 C húng hỏi nhau rằng: Ai làm điều đó? Đoạn, hỏi thăm và tra xét. Có người nói cùng chúng rằng: Aáy là Ghê-đê-ôn, con trai Giô-ách, đã làm điều đó.

And they say one to another, `Who hath done this thing?' and they inquire and seek, and they say, `Gideon son of Joash hath done this thing.'

30 D ân trong thành bèn nói cùng Giô-ách rằng: Hãy biểu con ngươi ra, nó phải chết, vì nó đã phá dỡ bàn thờ thần Ba-anh, và đánh hạ hình tượng A-sê-ra ở trên.

And the men of the city say unto Joash, `Bring out thy son, and he dieth, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the shrine which by it.'

31 G iô-ách đáp với những kẻ dấy nghịch cùng mình rằng: Các ngươi há có ý binh vực Ba-anh sao? Há có phải các ngươi muốn tiếp cứu nó ư? Ai theo phe của Ba-anh sẽ bị xử tử kể từ sáng nay. Nếu hắn là chúa, thì chính hắn hãy tranh luận lấy chớ, bởi vì người ta đã phá dỡ bàn thờ của hắn.

And Joash saith to all who have stood against him, `Ye, do ye plead for Baal? ye -- do ye save him? he who pleadeth for him is put to death during the morning; if he a god he himself doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

32 V ậy, trong ngày đó người ta gọi Ghê-đê-ôn là Giê-ru-ba-anh mà rằng: Ba-anh phải tranh luận cùng người, vì Ghê-đê-ôn có phá dỡ bàn thờ của hắn!

And he calleth him, on that day, Jerubbaal, saying, `The Baal doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

33 H ết thảy dân Ma-đi-an, dân A-ma-léc, và người phương Đông đều hiệp lại, đi ngang qua sông Giô-đanh, và đóng trại tại trũng Gít-rê-ên.

And all Midian and Amalek and the sons of the east have been gathered together, and pass over, and encamp in the valley of Jezreel,

34 T hần của Đức Giê-hô-va cảm hóa Ghê-đê-ôn; người thổi kèn, các người A-bi-ê-xê-rít bèn hiệp lại đặng theo người.

and the Spirit of Jehovah hath clothed Gideon, and he bloweth with a trumpet, and Abi-Ezer is called after him;

35 N gười cũng sai sứ giả đi khắp Ma-na-se; người Ma-na-se bèn nhóm hiệp đặng theo người. Đoạn, người sai sứ giả đến chi phái A-se, Sa-bu-lôn và Nép-ta-li; họ cũng đi lên mà hiệp với người nữa.

and messengers he hath sent into all Manasseh, and it also is called after him; and messengers he hath sent into Asher, and into Zebulun, and into Naphtali, and they come up to meet them.

36 G hê-đê-ôn thưa cùng Đức Chúa Trời rằng: Nếu Chúa muốn dùng tay tôi giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên, y như lời Chúa đã phán,

And Gideon saith unto God, `If Thou art Saviour of Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken,

37 t hì tôi sẽ để một lốt chiên trong sân đạp lúa; nếu sương chỉ đóng trên lốt chiên, còn đất lại khô ráo, thì tôi sẽ nhận biết Chúa dùng tay tôi giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên, y như Chúa đã hứa vậy.

lo, I am placing the fleece of wool in the threshing-floor: if dew is on the fleece alone, and on all the earth drought -- then I have known that Thou dost save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken;'

38 V iệc bèn xảy ra như vậy: ngày mai Ghê-đê-ôn dậy sớm, ép vắt lốt chiên, thì sương chảy ra đầy một chén nước.

and it is so, and he riseth early on the morrow, and presseth the fleece, and wringeth dew out of the fleece -- the fulness of the bowl, of water.

39 G hê-đê-ôn lại thưa cùng Đức Chúa Trời rằng: Xin cơn thạnh nộ Chúa chớ nổi phừng cùng tôi, tôi chỉ sẽ nói lần nầy thôi. Xin Chúa để tôi làm thử với lốt chiên chỉ một lần nầy thôi: Xin cho một mình lốt chiên phải khô, còn sương lại đóng khắp trên đất.

And Gideon saith unto God, `Let not Thine anger burn against me, and I speak only this time; let me try, I pray Thee, only this time with the fleece -- let there be, I pray Thee, drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth let there be dew.'

40 T rong đêm đó, Đức Chúa Trời bèn làm như vậy; chỉ một mình lốt chiên thì khô, còn khắp trên đất lại bị sương phủ.

And God doth so on that night, and there is drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth there hath been dew.
