1 O ra i figli d'Israele fecero ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno, e l'Eterno li diede nelle mani di Madian per sette anni.

And the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and Jehovah giveth them into the hand of Midian seven years,

2 L a mano di Madian si fece forte contro Israele; per paura dei Madianiti, i figli d'Israele si fecero le caverne che sono nei monti, e le spelonche e i forti.

and the hand of Midian is strong against Israel, from the presence of Midian have the sons of Israel made for themselves the flowings which in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

3 Q uando Israele aveva seminato, i Madianiti con gli Amalekiti e con i figli dell'est salivano contro di lui,

And it hath been, if Israel hath sowed, that Midian hath come up, and Amalek, and the sons of the east, yea, they have come up against him,

4 s i accampavano contro gl'Israeliti, distruggevano tutti i prodotti del paese fin verso Gaza e non lasciavano in Israele né mezzi di sussistenza, né pecore, né buoi, né asini.

and encamp against them, and destroy the increase of the land till thine entering Gaza; and they leave no sustenance in Israel, either sheep, or ox, or ass;

5 P oiché salivano col loro bestiame e con le loro tende, e arrivavano numerosi come locuste; essi e i loro cammelli erano innumerevoli, e venivano nel paese per devastarlo.

for they and their cattle come up, with their tents; they come in as the fulness of the locust for multitude, and of them and of their cattle there is no number, and they come into the land to destroy it.

6 I sraele fu perciò ridotto in grande povertà a motivo di Madian, e i figli d'Israele gridarono all'Eterno.

And Israel is very weak from the presence of Midian, and the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah.

7 Q uando i figli d'Israele gridarono all'Eterno a motivo di Madian,

And it cometh to pass when the sons of Israel have cried unto Jehovah, concerning Midian,

8 l 'Eterno mandò ai figli d'Israele un profeta, che disse loro: «Così dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: lo vi feci salire dall'Egitto e vi ho fatto uscire dalla casa di schiavitú;

that Jehovah sendeth a man, a prophet, unto the sons of Israel, and he saith to them, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I -- I have brought you up out of Egypt, and I bring you out from a house of servants,

9 v i liberai dalla mano degli Egiziani e dalla mano di tutti coloro che vi opprimevano; li scacciai davanti a voi e vi diedi il loro paese,

and I deliver you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all your oppressors, and I cast them out from your presence, and I give to you their land,

10 e vi dissi: "lo sono l'Eterno, il vostro DIO; non temete gli dèi degli Amorei nel paese dei quali abitate"; ma voi non avete dato ascolto alla mia voce».

and I say to you, I Jehovah your God, ye do not fear the gods of the Amorite in whose land ye are dwelling: -- and ye have not hearkened to My voice.'

11 P oi venne l'Angelo dell'Eterno e si sedette sotto la quercia di Ofrah, che apparteneva a Joash, Abiezerita, mentre suo figlio Gedeone batteva il grano nello strettoio, per sottrarlo ai Madianiti.

And the messenger of Jehovah cometh and sitteth under the oak which in Ophrah, which to Joash the Abi-Ezrite, and Gideon his son is beating out wheat in the wine-press, to remove from the presence of the Midianites;

12 L 'Angelo dell'Eterno gli apparve e gli disse: L'Eterno è con te, o guerriero valoroso!».

and the messenger of Jehovah appeareth unto him, and saith unto him, `Jehovah with thee, O mighty one of valour.'

13 G edeone gli rispose: «Signore mio, se l'Eterno è con noi, perché mai ci è avvenuto tutto questo? Dove sono tutti i suoi prodigi che i nostri padri ci hanno narrato dicendo: "Non ci fece l'Eterno uscire dall'Egitto?". Ma ora l'Eterno ci ha abbandonato e ci ha dato nelle mani di Madian».

And Gideon saith unto him, `O, my lord -- and Jehovah is with us! -- and why hath all this found us? and where all His wonders which our fathers recounted to us, saying, Hath not Jehovah brought us up out of Egypt? and now Jehovah hath left us, and doth give us into the hand of Midian.'

14 A llora l'Eterno si volse a lui e gli disse: «Va' con questa tua forza e salva Israele dalla mano di Madian. Non sono io che ti mando?».

And Jehovah turneth unto him and saith, `Go in this -- thy power; and thou hast saved Israel out of the hand of Midian -- have not I sent thee.'

15 E gli gli rispose: «O mio Signore, come salverò Israele Ecco, la mia famiglia è la piú debole di Manasse, e io sono il piú piccolo nella casa di mio padre».

And he saith unto him, `O, my lord, wherewith do I save Israel? lo, my chief weak in Manasseh, and I the least in the house of my father.'

16 L 'Eterno gli disse: «Ma io sarò con te e tu sconfiggerai i Madianiti come se fossero un uomo solo».

And Jehovah saith unto him, `Because I am with thee -- thou hast smitten the Midianites as one man.'

17 G li disse allora Gedeone: «Se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, dammi un segno che sei tu che parli con me.

And he saith unto Him, `If, I pray Thee, I have found grace in Thine eyes, then Thou hast done for me a sign that Thou art speaking with me.

18 D eh, non te ne andare di qui prima che io torni da te, ti porti la mia oblazione di cibo e te la metta davanti». L'Eterno disse: Aspetterò finché tu ritorni».

Move not, I pray Thee, from this, till my coming in unto Thee, and I have brought out my present, and put it before Thee;' and he saith, `I -- I do abide till thy return.'

19 A llora Gedeone entrò in casa e preparò un capretto e delle focacce azzime con un'efa di farina; mise la carne in un canestro e il brodo in una pentola, li portò a lui sotto la quercia e glieli offrì.

And Gideon hath gone in, and prepareth a kid of the goats, and of an ephah of flour unleavened things; the flesh he hath put in a basket, and the broth he hath put in a pot, and he bringeth out unto Him, unto the place of the oak, and bringeth nigh.

20 L 'Angelo di DIO gli disse: «Prendi la carne e le focacce azzime, mettile su questa roccia e versavi sopra il brodo». Ed egli fece così.

And the messenger of God saith unto him, `Take the flesh and the unleavened things, and place on this rock -- and the broth pour out;' and he doth so.

21 A llora l'Angelo dell'Eterno stese la punta del bastone che aveva in mano e toccò la carne e le focacce azzime; e dalla roccia salì un fuoco che consumò la carne e le focacce azzime; poi l'Angelo dell'Eterno scomparve dai suoi occhi.

And the messenger of Jehovah putteth forth the end of the staff which in His hand, and cometh against the flesh, and against the unleavened things, and the fire goeth up out of the rock and consumeth the flesh and the unleavened things -- and the messenger of Jehovah hath gone from his eyes.

22 C osì Gedeone si rese conto che era l'Angelo dell'Eterno, e disse: «Ahimè, o Signore, o Eterno! Poiché ho visto l'Angelo dell'Eterno faccia a faccia!».

And Gideon seeth that He a messenger of Jehovah, and Gideon saith, `Alas, Lord Jehovah! because that I have seen a messenger of Jehovah face to face!'

23 L 'Eterno gli disse: «La pace sia con te; non temere, non morrai!».

And Jehovah saith to him, `Peace to thee; fear not; thou dost not die.'

24 A llora Gedeone costruì in quel luogo un altare all'Eterno e lo chiamò «Jehovah Shalom». Esso si trova anche oggi a Ofrah degli Abiezeriti.

And Gideon buildeth there an altar to Jehovah, and calleth it Jehovah-Shalom, unto this day it yet in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrites.

25 I n quella stessa notte l'Eterno gli disse: «Prendi il toro di tuo padre e il secondo toro di sette anni, demolisci l'altare di Baal che appartiene a tuo padre e abbatti l'Ascerah che gli sta vicino;

And it cometh to pass, on that night, that Jehovah saith to him, `Take the young ox which to thy father, and the second bullock of seven years, and thou hast thrown down the altar of Baal which to thy father, and the shrine which by it thou dost cut down,

26 p oi costruisci un altare all'Eterno, il tuo DIO, in cima a questa roccia nell'ordine dovuto; prendi quindi il secondo toro e offrilo in olocausto sulla legna dell'Ascerah che avrai abbattuto».

and thou hast built an altar to Jehovah thy God on the top of this stronghold, by the arrangement, and hast taken the second bullock, and caused to ascend a burnt-offering with the wood of the shrine which thou cuttest down.'

27 A llora Gedeone prese dieci uomini fra i suoi sei e fece come l'Eterno gli aveva detto; ma poiché aveva paura della casa di suo padre e della gente della città, invece di farlo di giorno, lo fece di notte.

And Gideon taketh ten men of his servants, and doth as Jehovah hath spoken unto him, and it cometh to pass, because he hath been afraid of the house of his father, and the men of the city, to do by day, that he doth by night.

28 Q uando il mattino seguente la gente della città si alzò, vide che l'altare di Baal era stato demolito, che l'Ascerah postovi accanto era abbattuto e che il secondo toro era offerto in olocausto sull'altare che era stato costruito.

And the men of the city rise early in the morning, and lo, broken down hath been the altar of Baal, and the shrine which is by it hath been cut down, and the second bullock hath been offered on the altar which is built.

29 E si dissero l'un l'altro: «Chi ha fatto questo?». Quando poi si informarono e chiesero, fu loro detto: «Gedeone, figlio di Joash ha fatto questo».

And they say one to another, `Who hath done this thing?' and they inquire and seek, and they say, `Gideon son of Joash hath done this thing.'

30 A llora la gente della città disse a Joash: «Conduci fuori tuo figlio e sia messo a morte, perché ha demolito l'altare di Baal e ha abbattuto l'Ascerah che gli stava vicino».

And the men of the city say unto Joash, `Bring out thy son, and he dieth, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the shrine which by it.'

31 J oash rispose a tutti quelli che si levavano contro di lui: «Volete voi difendere la causa di Baal o venirgli in aiuto? Chi vorrà difendere la sua causa sarà messo a morte prima di domani mattina. Se egli è dio, difenda da sé la sua causa, poiché hanno demolito il suo altare».

And Joash saith to all who have stood against him, `Ye, do ye plead for Baal? ye -- do ye save him? he who pleadeth for him is put to death during the morning; if he a god he himself doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

32 P erciò quel giorno Gedeone fu chiamato Jerubbaal, perché si disse: «Sia Baal a combattere contro di lui, poiché egli ha demolito il suo altare».

And he calleth him, on that day, Jerubbaal, saying, `The Baal doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

33 O r tutti i Madianiti, gli Amalekiti e i figli dell'est si radunarono, passarono il Giordano, e si accamparono nella valle di Jezreel.

And all Midian and Amalek and the sons of the east have been gathered together, and pass over, and encamp in the valley of Jezreel,

34 M a lo Spirito dell'Eterno investì Gedeone che suonò la tromba; e gli Abiezeriti furono convocati per seguirlo.

and the Spirit of Jehovah hath clothed Gideon, and he bloweth with a trumpet, and Abi-Ezer is called after him;

35 E gli mandò anche messaggeri in tutto Manasse, che fu pure convocato per seguirlo; mandò inoltre messaggeri nelle tribú di Ascer, Zabulon e di Neftali, le quali salirono a incontrare gli altri.

and messengers he hath sent into all Manasseh, and it also is called after him; and messengers he hath sent into Asher, and into Zebulun, and into Naphtali, and they come up to meet them.

36 P oi Gedeone disse a DIO: «Se intendi salvare Israele per mia mano, come hai detto,

And Gideon saith unto God, `If Thou art Saviour of Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken,

37 e cco, io metterò un vello di lana sull'aia: se c'è rugiada soltanto sul vello e tutto il terreno all'intorno rimane asciutto, allora saprò che intendi salvare Israele per mia mano, come hai detto.

lo, I am placing the fleece of wool in the threshing-floor: if dew is on the fleece alone, and on all the earth drought -- then I have known that Thou dost save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken;'

38 E così avvenne. Il mattino dopo Gedeone si levò per tempo, strizzò il vello e ne spremette la rugiada; ne uscì una coppa piena d'acqua.

and it is so, and he riseth early on the morrow, and presseth the fleece, and wringeth dew out of the fleece -- the fulness of the bowl, of water.

39 M a Gedeone disse ancora a DIO: «Non si accenda la tua ira contro di me; io parlerò ancora una volta. Deh, lasciami fare la prova col vello ancora una volta soltanto. Rimanga asciutto solo il vello e ci sia rugiada su tutto il terreno all'intorno.

And Gideon saith unto God, `Let not Thine anger burn against me, and I speak only this time; let me try, I pray Thee, only this time with the fleece -- let there be, I pray Thee, drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth let there be dew.'

40 E DIO fece così quella notte: soltanto il vello rimase asciutto, e ci fu rugiada su tutto il terreno all'intorno.

And God doth so on that night, and there is drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth there hath been dew.
